Gerald McCoy wants Jameis to just be Jameis.
Joe thinks the term “leaders” may be the most misused and perhaps the most overblown word in sports, particularly football and specifically when talking about a 2-14 team. So you led your team to the worst record in the league? Cute.
Just do your job and win games. The NFL isn’t the Boy Scouts where you get ribbons for tying knots.
So while Joe rolled his eyes at a piece from SI.com typed by Joan Niesen, where she references leaders of the Bucs, she came across something Joe thought was really cool from defensive tackle Gerald McCoy discussing “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.
Which brings us to Winston, of course. It’s too early to analyze his on-field performance; a good day at training camp does not a Pro Bowler make, although Mankins says he’s impressed with the rookie’s ability to read the field. Around the Bucs facility, he’s earning rave reviews. McCoy, who arrives before 7 a.m., says “the Kid” is already in at that hour working on his conditioning, and he stresses that though Winston is Tampa Bay’s biggest name, he certainly isn’t its leader. “He’s not there yet,” McCoy says. “All we want him to be is himself. We’ve got guys to lead. He’s being a rookie. He’s doing what’s necessary. That’s it. It’s our job to keep him at bay and to make sure he’s as comfortable as possible.”
Now Joe thinks this is really neat. Jameis has a tendency to do too much sometimes because he wants to take the bull by the horns so badly. That’s understandable, but it is the inference that GMC is telling Jameis, in so many words. “Young man, you have enough on your plate. We need you. Badly. Just worry about the offense and we’ve got your back. Don’t worry about anything else. We will take care of you. You just take care of yourself.”
And that is cool as hell.

I am just ready for some football! Interesting thing about these preseason games, Winston last year started slow and then got rolling. Seems like the pattern continues in training camp. IF he does that in preseason, all we might see is bad warm up Winston if he is only playing a quarter or so. Media would have a field day.

Pitt was a decent team, they don’t get anywhere near the level of overall talent that FSU and other ACC teams get, been going through coaching changes a lot lately with coaches running off to another team. That Pittsburgh area has produced some of the best talent in the NFL over the years.

It’s silly to even talk about who the “leader” of a team is. Optimally – there will be at least 2 or 3 players on either side of the ball that “lead”. And it’s usually the best players who have experience that take on that role.
Jameis Winston is a special case though. His talent and his work ethic and his personality and his success on the football field will dictate his “leadership” role. It doesn’t matter whether Jameis is voted a team captain or not. When the season starts and a game is on line in the 4th quarter and he is talking to his offense in the huddle – there will be no doubt about who the leader is. And more often than not – this kid is going to LEAD this team to victory given the opportunity. Because that’s what Winston does – is WIN.

Jameis is a natural leader. If he wants to lead, let him lead!
