New Bucs manbeast DT Tony McDaniel is talking big

There’s nothing like having a good player with supreme expectations and confidence, combined with a winning resumé.

It doesn’t always work out (see Evan Smith’s Super Bowl ring), but that attitude can be infectious.

Enter new Buccaneers defensive tackle Tony McDaniel. He was talking big yesterday.

In addition to sharing a mighty fact — that a dozen teams were pursuing him, and that’s why he needed more than a week to settle on a new team after Seattle cut him — McDaniel said his presence will mean that Bucs will be victorious.

“I bring some more toughness,” McDaniel said. “I think having me here, we’ll win a lot more ballgames.”

No, McDaniel wasn’t referring to how his friend Michael Bennett wants to return to Tampa. McDaniel was pointing to his ability as a run stuffer, and a manbeast (6-7) who will “eat up blockers.”

“I consider myself as a hybrid,” McDaniel said, “I can play some end, 3-technique and can play some nose.”

Hmm, remember those “hybrids.” That’s the word Gerald McCoy used to describe what will be so important to the Bucs’ defense this year.

I love the swagger and all but he’d better back that stuff up with play on the field.

  2. Harry Says:

I love it. Talk about being loaded at one position. Now if we can get some production at DE, the Bucs D might show some good improvement this season. Can’t wait to see them play.

  3. Capt.Tim Says:

Plan has to be, to play some of these DTs at DE.
Otherwise, we dont have enough Snaps for all of our talented DTs
And I Think McDaniel is right- he is a supreme Run stopper. Next to McCoy,
Our interior defense is truly fierce!!
And thats with Melton and MacDonald on the Bench!!! Where they shouldnt be.

Dont know where they will play them all- but Tony Macdaniel should be our anser at Nost tackle for years to come

  4. LakelandBuc Says:

At 6’7 315lbs, Tony McDaniel should be a decent edge rusher. If our undersize edge rushers are not producing, we will need to make adjustments. And one defensive lineup comes to mind. Henry Melton LDE, Gerald McCoy 3 Tech DT, Clint McDonald NT, Tony McDaniel RDE. We know Henry Melton can play some DE, and Tony McDaniel admits that he can play some end. So we can make it happen, we have the talent on the D-Line to throw a lot of looks at the opposing offense.

    Something like this,maybe:
    1st & 2nd down: LDE-J. Smith 3T-McCoy NT-McDaniel RDE-G. Johnson
    3rd down: LDE-Gholston 3T-McCoy NT-McDonald RDE-H. Melton
Substitutions: Melton or McDonald for McCoy; Tj Fatinikum and L. Englis for j. Smith and G. Johnson

There’s a LOT of flexibility here to keep everyone fresh and involved!

  6. Jeff Says:

D-Line, dare I day, looks pretty stout. Let’s hope the injury bug doesn’t bit us too hard and we can leverage these beasts all year to put QB’s on their backs and Running Backs on the ground.

  7. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

6’7,315lbs man you talking bout a space eater. So feeling the acquisition, one thang about them Hawks boys they seem to have a no none since air about them selves. Stephen A call’em “Rough Riders”. And ain’t nothing wrong some of that.

  8. Tom S. Says:

But Joe, how will McDaniel fill the massive shoes left by Akeem Spence who we can all agree was the third best player Dominik ever drafted?! Backup DT’s don’t grow on trees Joe!!!

  9. Ray Rice Says:

Man all these big guys in the middle. We could hopefully have our version of Jacksonville’s former wall when they had Big John Henderson and Marcus Stroud.

  10. Teacherman777 Says:

Gerald McCoy should get snaps at DE!!

He would be as dominant as Bruce Smith!

Nobody can take Gerald on 1 on 1.

    Please slide him outside sometimes!!

    Pleeeaase!!

  11. Buc since '74 Says:

I’ve got to agree with Teacherman – put McDonald, Melton, and/or MacDaniel inside on passing situations and let GMC slide to the edge with English, Gholston or Johnson on the other side. Talk about a mismatch! There are very few LTs or RTs that can handle the first step, speed and strength of GMC! We have enough big boys now that we can let GMC loose to roam and eat.

  12. DavidbigBucsFan Says:

Can you see a 5-2-4 defensive line up? Johnson -McDaniel- McDonald-McCoy-Smith hows that sound for a defensive line. That’s a lot of Macs on the line we can call it our BIG MAC ATTACK FORMATION or Trips deueces high! LOL. With speed of LVD and Wrath of Kwon roaming the middle and 4 corners covering their backs. That would be a way to get them out there at the same time. It would surely be a more AGGRESSIVE allignment thats for sure.
