Jameis’ Picks “Means Nothing”

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock defended “America’s Quarterback” yesterday.
There isn’t a guy around talking football that Joe enjoys listening to more than Mike Mayock. Doesn’t mean Joe agrees with him all the time, but Joe could just sit for hours and listen to the guy.
As Chucky would say, “Love him, man!”
Mayock was at One Buc Palace yesterday to do live hits from training camp, specifically to pull the curtain back for NFL Network viewers on “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.
Before the draft, Mayock was hardly a Jameis guy. Jameis’ lawyer, David Cornwell, once said Mayock called him and scolded him about Jameis saying, “He is just so immature.” Then, just before the draft, Mayock went over the top claiming Jameis should have had 40 picks his last year at Florida State, which is beyond the pale. Not only would that have shattered an NCAA record, any quarterback who would throw 40 picks would be undraftable.
To Mayock’s credit, he came to Jameis’ defense yesterday. The nonsense about Jameis throwing picks in training camp got Mayock’s dander up.
Just like Jaws of BSPN told Joe, Mayock thinks this is just ridiculous to compare Jameis throwing picks in blitz practice to Marcus Mariota throwing no picks on checkdowns.
“To me it means nothing,” Mayock proclaimed. “Its apples to oranges. Two different teams. Two different drills. And how many interceptions he throws in practice right now means nothing. It’s getting acclimated to what they are doing. They are force-feeding the kid a lot of stuff. I would much rather the kid make the mistakes now than Week One of the regular season.”
If you believe the words of the creator, curator and overall guru of Pro Football Talk, the great Mike Florio, it isn’t so much Mariota being so acurate, it is that the Titans defense is so lousy.
Besides, Jameis has had three pretty good practices in a row. Joe’s starting to get the impression Jameis has turned the corner.
As Jameis said yesterday, “We are all masculine.”

And it does not matter if he throws 15 picks in pre-season, its all just practice!! It all “starts” one month from now!!

Banks will pick off Mariota twice!! Trust me!!! Banks is gonna blow up this season. I think he is a better version of Brian Kelly.

I dont care what these guys are saying, even when they praise Jameis. They arent putting the time in at practice like the players and coaching staff. A lot of what they say are just guesses. Do they report facts anymore or just theories and opinions?
Let the dude practice and make sure he is attempting every throw. He will figure out what he should and shouldnt do.

That would be awesome. But, what if this team finds a running game and we dont need to lean on Winstons arm?
I would be happy with 175 yards, 1 td, and 1 int if the running game is eating up the clock and scoring and the D steps it up and keeps scrub QBs out of the end zone. Just win. Thats all I care about.

It’s true, picks in practice and preseason games don’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. However, the reason for the INTs may be important! Is he struggling to understand the plays? Is he not picking up what the defense is doing? Is he just “out of sync” with his WRs? Or is he trying to force the ball? These are all things that rookie QBs have to deal with. As long as he doesn’t repeat the same mistakes when the games actually mean something, he should be fine!

Mayock is not good at what he does:
NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock says he wouldn’t take Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the first pick in the draft. Or a Top 10 pick. Or even a Top 20 pick.

I’m not concern with Jameis interceptions in camp, I would be concern if he wasn’t throwing picks. You learn from mistakes, you don’t learn from watching film or sitting on the bench. And you don’t progress in this league by throwing checkdowns, you will have to throw into coverage to survive in this league. I’m concern about our running game, our special teams, our defense. We will need 2200 yards or more from our running game. We will need our special team to give us good field position. We will need our defense to keep the opposing team out of the end zone, we can’t afford to give up a lot of points. The one thing that we can’t afford is, playing from behind. We can’t have our rookie QB making desperate throws, we have to avoid the high scoring games. With a strong running game, we can avoid the shootouts ( the worst case scenario for a rookie QB). With a strong running game, we can control the clock, we can help our defense ( by giving them rest). We need those long drives to keep QB’S like Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, Drew Brees, Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Andrew Luck off the field. A poor running game is the worst thing in football, a balanced attack is a must.

I like Mayock too, but sounds like he finally got his heart right on America’s QB. I think he was going a bit overboard on the contrarian point of view during pre-draft analyses.

Mike Mayock is overrated in my opinion,I like Charles Davis more as an draft analysis. Mel Kiper is the guru, he is all alone and the rest are fighting for 2nd place.

Mayock lost some credibility with me this past off-season after I started to go back and research some of his past pre-draft rankings and comments.

Mariota and Jameis will reveal what they know and how well they are adjusting to their teams and schemes in a few days. Mariota was a good QB in college and so was the guy drafted #1.
Their individual talent, good and bad, will still be measured within the context of the talent on their teams. I’m fairly certain that the Titans have an overall faster and more experienced group of WR’s. So, there’s that.
Football is a TEAM game. I value the contributions of QB’s as much as the next guy, but, I have matured in my appreciation of all the other guys in the line-up that are difference makers.
A few truths for my fellow Bucs fans:
* Jackson and Evans are “clock slow” but “game speed fast”.
* Throwing “jump balls” all game is a bad idea and leads to injuries.
* Meyers might be a more “reliable” target than ASJ, at this point.
* Our OL is comprised of 2.5 pro level players out of 5 possible starters
* Based on strength of schedule, the Bucs “should” win more in 2015.
* Preseason games are about rating individual talent.
* Think of the preseason as the 2nd NFL Draft Combine
* Our “speedy” WR’s have to prove they can get open AND beat the sack.
* Our running game has no proven RB’s. Two years ago is a lifetime.
* I’d feel a lot better if ALL of our players were in their contract year(s).
* Keeping Jameis healthy will be a major factor in our success. Too Easy..!!

Before the draft, Mike Mayock couldn’t quit talking about all the INTs from last year and how that worried him and blah blah blah. I like his little 180. It’s amazing the people that are paid to give their opinion on sh!t they nothing about.

Geez, what do you guys expect from projecting a college player to the pros. There is not one thing that can tell you a good player from bad. Personally, I think it’s all opinion-based anyway.As Gene Hackman once said in The Replacements, “It’s about heart.”
If you can predict better than Mayock, then go take his place. I doubt you could do better.

Oh sure – now Mayock is a Winston advocate. Pre-draft he was a Winston detractor. Hate how these guys just say whatever based on…. whatever.
