Day 9 – Training Camp Notes & Observations
August 11th, 2015
Today’s brawl was just one moment in practice. Joe’s got plenty more. (Yes, that is Dirk Koetter holding on to Jameis Winston with two hands.)
It was another broiling day on the practice fields of One Buc Palace, and Joe has all kinds of news and nuggets.
Enjoy.
*Usual rookie suspects at punt returner work, with Kaelin Clay leading the way. Bucs have a pile of rookies working there, including Adam Humphries and Donteea Dye. Clay is first on the new depth chart for both returner spots, with Bobby Rainey at No. 2.
*Ali Marpet is a brick wall for defensive end George Johnson in the running game.
*DE Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. blows up Tim Wright.
*Bobby Rainey with a cutback run off left tackle for a touchdown. Was left tackle Donovan Smith holding? Maybe.
*Crack! Gerald McCoy stuffs Doug Martin up the gut — at the line of scrimmage.
*Marpet knocked off balance this time in the run game (couldn’t see who). Martin stuffed again.
*Sharp mid-range completion, Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, to Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

*Mike Glennon throws short to Brandon Myers. He covers up and doesn’t run, as if to protect himself from a hit, but there is no hit coming. C’mon, man. Catch and run.
*Gelnnon overthrows a wide open Donteea Dye with safety D.J. Swearinger trailing.
*Jameis hits Rannell Hall to the left side for eight yards with Johnthan Banks all over him.
*7-on-7 begins.
*Jameis hits Seferian-Jenkins, who is doing a better job holding the ball.
*Alterraun Verner with a nice breakup on Kenny Bell in a crossing route. Verner continues his strong camp.
*Glennon hits Rannell Hall to start his 7-on-7 duty.
*Glennon comes back with a bad throw deep to an open Russell Shepard, broken up by Sterling Moore. Rough day for the Mike Glennon Mob.
*In 1-on-1 work with linemen, held simultaneously, Joe spots Donovan Smith holding off Johnson.
*And Kadeem Edwards handles T.J. Fatinikun.
*More good coverage by the linebacker who is everywhere, Danny Lansanah. He breaks up a short Jameis throw to Doug Martin.
*Still in 7-on-7, Jameis’ arm strength is evident with a rope to Robert Herron 20 yards down field.
*Another zipped throw to Herron, who elevates and wins with Keith Tandy covering.
*DROP! Doneteea Dye and cornerback Brandon Dixon intercepts the muffed catch.
*Solid power run to the right by Charles Sims.
*A Jameis dumpoff screen-like pass to Sims is caught and he has Evan Smith in front of him, but Sims doesn’t pick a hole, waits and then gets taken down. Joe is near former Bucs guard Ian Beckles when this play goes down. And Beckles is in disbelief. “Hit the hole, running back,” Beckles barks.
*Nice connection from Jameis to ASJ, but Lavonte David was shooting up the A-Gap and this would have been a nasty QB hit in a real game. Jameis has no fear in the pocket, and maybe this is a harbinger of things to come from David.
*Jameis is in rhythm with a throw to Martin. Next play, linebacker Quinton Alston (undrafted rookie out of Iowa) meets Martin in a hole.
*Touchdown! Jameis rolls right and finds Vincent Jackson in the end zone. Bucs fans are comforted by what could be this season.
*There’s an undrafted rookie defensive end Ryan Delaire who makes play after play in second- and third-team work. Someone to watch (No. 75) on Saturday night.
*Kenny Bell is not much of a blocker in the run game. Oh, boy.
*William Gholston explodes and hits Bobby Rainey in the backfield just as he takes a handoff from Glennon.
*Rainey comes back and shows excellent vision, a Rainey trademark.
*There’s that No. 75 again with what would have been a sack of Glennon.
*Word around practice is that Logan Mankins didn’t finish practice because he was feeling ill. That violent steambath at One Buc is no place to be battling illness.

Sounds like our OL is still hurting. Hopefully our DL keeps playing like this when the games count.

Joe, are you sure that was Quinton Alston meeting Martin in the hole? I thought he was waived before practice today.

I’m glad ASJ is holding on to the ball, the guy can seriously be one hell of a weapon for us.
Can’t wait to see the lineman O and D and how they stack up against another team. Then we can truly evaluate what we have. Saturday hurry up!!!!

Nice recap as usual, I’m past ready to face an opposing team, even preseason. The Vikings should be a better gage of where this Buc team stands all around.

I feel for those guys. It is ridiculously hot out there and can’t imagine wearing pads. 300lb dudes in full pads running into each other at high speeds in this heat ain’t healthy. That’s the real reason they need an indoor facility at One Buc.

Thanks Joe. It was indeed hot out there.
My personal additional observations:
– Doug Martin looks quick and sharp. He had a couple nice runs – 1 for a TD that Joe didn’t mention.
– Neither Glennon or Winston looks “Tennessee ready”. Jameis looked better overall – and did throw some really nice balls – but he missed on too many IMO. No ints though – Glennon had the only int I saw – and it was more the receiver’s fault than MG. Glennon still not very accurate with his long balls but looked pretty consistent with his med range. MG still checks down too often – even in practice.
– If Mankins misses any significant time this year – then the OLine is in trouble. Edwards at LG is NOT the answer.
– was hoping to see some good things from Kenny Bell and was somewhat disappointed in his play today.
– ASJ looked like the best receiver on the field today. Dude is a BIG target. Tim Wright did not have a very good day. Other Tight ends were meh.
– Talk about BIG – Donovan Smith is a LARGE MAN.
– Saw 2 plays in a row where LD54 lined up as SAM and Lansanah lined up as WILL. Thought that was interesting.
– Banks was getting an unhappy ear full from his CB position coach more than once in a short span today.
– Verner looked smooth the few plays he was out there.
– Clay looks like a good returner. He broke one of his kickoff returns for a TD with a nice cut in traffic to break free and speed did the rest.

That dumpoff sreen pass to Charles Sims, where Charles Sims didn’t hit the hole is the same play that the Falcons was using with Antone Smith.. But the back gotta react quick and hit the hole, it was always a big play for Antone Smith. I believe the Bucs would have more success with the play if Bobby Rainey was the receiver. Rainey hit the hole quickier than any Bucs RB,and he react well to the play.The back has to be able to see the hole, catch the ball and have that burst at the same time. He should be able to burst through the hole and accelerate to another gear for a big gain.

Did anyone see the little league football team that came to the training facility today … THE NORTH TAMPA BUCCANEERS… They must of had 100 kids with them and how about those jerseys they had on . They are a very proud group of kids …

Maybe Kenny Bell will be a WR lauded for his pass catching abilities rather than his blocking.

JOE, if you weren’t so wrongheadedly dismissive of UDFAs you would have known when the Bucs signed him that Delaire had a pretty good chance of quickly being a decent contributor. Was it your “Dean” and functionally illiterate “good friend” who taught you to have your attitude toward UDFAs? Sounds like something he would believe in and abide by. Shame on you for having even an iota of respect for ANYTHING that person says, does or thinks. He is truly a reprehensible human being.

At Nebraska Bell was known for his fierce run blocking as well as his speed and great hands. It may take a little while for him to adjust to the NFL but he will be a good blocker for us this season. I look for him to be our slot receiver this year and take over the number 2 WR job when VJax retires and Evans takes over VJax’s position. Then Herron and Hall can compete for slot receiver. We are in good shape at WR for the future. And Murphy should be in the mix too!
