Jackson Drops The “L” Word On Jameis Winston
August 10th, 2015Joe realizes there is a fringe faction of Bucs fans that wants to see Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, shut up and know his place as a rookie.
And half of those lunatics think Jameis should be in a fair competition with Mike Glennon for a starting gig.
Joe will direct those fans to the words of Vincent Jackson yesterday.
Keep in mind Jackson rarely says anything interesting, doesn’t talk much to media, and little seems to arouse his football passion beyond speaking in clichés.
But Jackson had a different tone when asked whether Jameis qualifies as a football junkie.
“He is, he really is. In the meeting rooms, he wants to go through every single, he wants to go through every cadence,” Jackson said. “He might even do more than the coaches are asking him to do, but that’s good. He’s hungry and he wants to be great, and that’s all you can ask from a leader.”
Wait a minute! Did V-Jax just call Jameis a “leader?”
Joe’s already written about how the Bucs roster, which votes for two offensive team captains annually, should shun the old guard and elect Jameis and Mike Evans this year.
In the end, captaincy means little, but it might be a bonus to see the Bucs do the right thing and fully anoint Jameis, a lifelong winner.

No, they should Vote Jameis and Mankins.
August 10th, 2015 at 12:52 pm
I think it should be Mankins and VJax for offense. Who were they last yr?
August 10th, 2015 at 12:53 pm
It says a lot about how this team is complacent when a rookie can be more of a leader than the vets on this team
August 10th, 2015 at 12:55 pm
Yes Capt.Tim. It needs to be Mankins and Jaboo or Mankins and V-Jax
August 10th, 2015 at 12:57 pm
I’d still give it to VJax and Mankins this year. Jameis and Mike the future leaders for years to come. Jameis still gotta earn it in my eyes with at least a years work. Awesome to hear about he’s off to a great start tho!
August 10th, 2015 at 12:58 pm
If Jaboo didn’t play football, he would be leading a group of fanatics to world domination. He can’t be held down.
August 10th, 2015 at 1:02 pm
Good point T-Tony why take Jameis’s leadership as a positive when you can turn it into a negative for the team. That’s what REAL winners do.

It is not lunacy to want competiton….just the opposite….it is lunacy not to want it.
Competition always improves players or it should….any player who crumbles from competition deserves the outcome.
Now, I’m not saying that there is any likelyhood that Glennon would unseat Winston…or that he should get an equal number of snaps with the first string….but I suspect even Winston would want fair competition between them….the same goes for LVD & GMC…..if Melton challenged GMC…that’s good and if Kwon Alexander challenged LVD….that’s good. If Mike Jenkins challenged Banks….that’s good!!!
What on earth is the fear?
August 10th, 2015 at 1:05 pm
Honestly, this obsession with Winston can’t be healthy, Joe.
I understand the need to cover him, but you’re doing it over a word now. Eesh!
He better turn out great, because I’m about burned out on him because of you, lol.

:I’d still give it to VJax and Mankins this year. Jameis and Mike the future leaders for years to come. ”
Agreed. Making Jameis a Captain too early (before he earns it on the field) puts unnecessary pressure on him.
August 10th, 2015 at 1:17 pm
Has there ever been a rookie named a captain for any team in the NFL?
August 10th, 2015 at 1:38 pm
THE MESSIAH! Once again leading the only way he knows how.
August 10th, 2015 at 1:38 pm
@BucFan37
RG!!! was named captain as a rookie…..ESPN did a poll on rookies being named captains and surprisingly 63% thought it was OK….,
I think it is,…..but only if they are voted captain….not appointed….
August 10th, 2015 at 1:47 pm
The reason comptetition at QB would be pointless is itd mean less starting reps going into the season which means less chemistry with Evans/Vjax/etc. He was taken #1 because he was NFL ready to go. If he would have struggled through OTAs and the playbook that’s one thing but he’s likely already been looking better than Glennon from everything Ive read.

@TBBF,
I completely agree. “IF” the layers vote him in as a captain, it’s not only appropriate, but it is a big deal for them to make a rookie a Captain (poor E Smith, lol)
@Bonzia,
It’s not just a word. It was the whole take from VJax. “A football junkie”. “Into finite detail, maybe even more so than the coaches”. “Work ethic”. “Wants to be great.” Then he said “leader”.
Now, when these statements come from someone that likes to use standard cliches (quiet leader, leads by example, one game at a time, and ALL those stupid cliches) his observations mean a lot. I make the following comparison reluctantly, but these are the SAME, HUGE, characteristics people use to discribe what makes Payton Manning great. As Buc fans, we can only hope and pray Winston has those qualities. So, YES, they are a big deal
August 10th, 2015 at 1:58 pm
^^^opps, layers= players
August 10th, 2015 at 2:04 pm
Winston is going to LEAD the Buccaneers to a lot of wins in his career. So yea – it’s appropriate.
The Winston era has begun and no other player’s star will shine brighter for this franchise than Jameis’. Better get used to it Bonzai. You’ve been a major sceptic of Jaboo since day one – so its no wonder you are “burned out on him”. Winston is your franchise QB dude – time to get on board if you call yourself a Bucs fan. Trust me – you will enjoy the ride.

Jamo might be a Int machine but he is a natural born leader.
August 10th, 2015 at 2:55 pm
Love Jameis but it’s Mankins and Jackson as captains all the way. Jameis can lead, but let him earn his leadership role through a season of professional football first.
August 10th, 2015 at 4:55 pm
Johnny how is he an interception machine when he threw 28 in two years??? He threw 65 touchdowns why don’t you talk about thththaaat??? 40tds10ints as a freshman! Read up on yer stats there son!
August 10th, 2015 at 7:11 pm
Jameis and Mankins. The two most sensible picks would be lovely. Mike Evans is in his 2nd year and will be a captain very soon but your franchise QB and All Pro Veteran guard would do the most good.
August 10th, 2015 at 10:49 pm
Great. As long as Jameis does what he has to in practice and on gameday, the leadership role will come in due time. All this speculating and debating about wether the guy should lead or just be a rookie, it will solve itself. It has to come naturally. And apparentley it’s starting to come together.
August 10th, 2015 at 11:22 pm
Jameis and Mike Evans, build the foundation now. And let it grow stronger over the years.
