“It’s About Learning”
August 10th, 2015During the last two training camp practices, “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, was mostly sharp. In his first few practices, he had more rough first steps but overcame them each day.
You are starting to see, perhaps, the blossoming of a franchise quarterback. Yesterday in a two-minute drill, Jameis was flawless, hitting on all six of his attempts.
The early struggles, throwing picks, but overcoming them seemed to be a throwback to his last year at Florida State, where he started games slowly but often was red hot in the second half. When Jameis was asked if this is just a personal pattern, he waved off the suggestion.
“It’s not about that. It’s about learning,” Jameis said. “It’s about getting better every single day. Sometimes, you have to make mistakes to get better. Luckily, this is practice and that is what practice is for.
“If you make a mistake you have to bounce back. To be a good quarterback, you have to snap and click. I’ve never let one thing hold me down.”
So when Jameis said it is about learning, he was asked, naturally, if he is learning. Jameis responded, “Absolutely. I have no choice. If I took a day off, it would not be smart.”
And it would not be smart to focus on picks in practices. Don’t believe Joe? Then listen to Jaws.

Winston’s dedication to learn, improve every day and become the best QB he can be is impressive. Watching him “develop” is going to be fun. Sky’s the limit IMO considering this young man’s talent, knowledge and work ethic.

Practice is the time for mistakes….and learning from them. Anyone who is overly concerned about interceptions in practice needs to relax and understand the process.

The main purpose of this season in my opinion is Winston’s development. I’m not really looking at a win total. I think 6 wins is about right, but I’m ok with whatever happens as long as Winston shows flashes of being a great QB. I want 10 or 12 wins like the next fan and make the playoffs, but that doesn’t always bode well for future success. Andrew Luck made the playoffs his first season and never looked back. RG3 won rookie of the year and made the playoffs his rookie season and hasn’t been back since. Next season is when I expect a real playoff push.

I use to give Luck props for his three straight tournament appearance but when I paid closer attention and realized he played in a division with the jags, texans, titans I became a little less impress. He should be in the tournament every year. Maybe the jags have something with Bortles but that has been a QB less division for quite sometime.

Jameis Winston is going to be a “great” QB for the Bucs and his performance throughout OTA’s and training camp clearly shows growth and improvement. Having said that, if the BUC’s brass do not see a need to improve the right guard position, Winston may not finish the 2015 season. Neither Gillkey, Edwards or Marpet are ready for “prime time” and an up-grade is clearly needed. Evan Mathis is still available and the Bucs have $20 million in cap space to work with. What are they waiting for???
