Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano discusses “America’s Quarterback” and Bucs veterans.

Yes, “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, is but a rookie. One helluva talented rookie, that is.

But with all rookies, there are growing pains, learning curves. It’s just a matter of time until a rookie makes an error or two or three.

In this BSPN video, former Bucs commander Greg Schiano discusses how veterans of the Bucs can ease Jameis’ growing pains.

I’m not sure Schiano has the cache to be telling alone what would help a rookie along. It’s like getting GM advice from Dominick or Matt Millen.

  2. jimmy53 Says:

    Anyone not alone. Thanks autocorrect.

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

Coach Schiano has done more with less than lovie!!!

    Its as simple as that!!!

  4. Buc1987 Says:

    That’s the real Buc Realist.

  5. BlogTalkFootball Says:

Schiano minus Dominik might have worked. We might still have Revis though.

  6. Buccfan37 Says:

Yeah but Schiano didn’t last very long. Lovie will be here another decade at least, haven’t you heard?

  7. LargoBuc Says:

Schiano has done zero in the nfl. Nothing. What has that guy acomplished

  8. Yeogib Says:

I don’t think Schiano got a fair shake here.

  9. Nodak Pirate Says:

Schiano showed me what he was worth the way he handled the Freeman debacle. Dude really screwed up his head.

  10. Buc1987 Says:

If the Bucs start out 0-4 will there be Fire Lovie billboards erected in Tampa?

Schiano went 7-9 during his FIRST ever stint in the NFL. They started the next season 0-4 and up went the billboards.

Lovie went 2-14 in his first season with the Bucs with his long NFL career. Surely Lovie might get the same treatment as Schiano got in his second season. With even more of a reason to put the BB up because of the 2-14 season before this one.

Freeman ruined Freeman. Not Schiano. Anyone that keeps saying that is just making excuses for an ex-Buc QB.

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

If Lovie goes 0-4, has an embarrassing public spat with the qb, is an arse hole to the media, and has the team implode like Schiano did, then yes, there will absolutely be billboards up. Perhaps many of you love the guy for some reason, but he was a horrendous coach. He got a Gm fired for interviewing him. How bad do you have to be to have that happen? Lovie has been to a Super Bowl. Schiano hasn’t even won the Big East.

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

    Hawaiian is spot on.
Anyone who thinks Schiano knew anything about coaching, knows absolutely nothing about Football.
Schianos “Schemes” were so bad, other teams would standvup to see the play call- then burst into Laughter.
Never seen that before, or since

Worst Coach in Team History- hired by Worst GM in team history!!
And with this teams history- thats saying alot

  13. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Hawaiian

Wow, with a coach so bad and Lovie taking over, you would have thought Lovie would have coached circles around him!!! But he just laid a big fat egg didn’t he Hawaiian!!

And I do not care what he did in chicago, He is not facing the 0-16 Lions twice a year in Tampa. His record is 2-14!!!!!

  14. Couch Fan Says:

Schiano has done zero in the nfl. Nothing. What has that guy acomplished
    —————-

And Incompetent Lovie has done even less here in Tampa despite not being a rookie coach like Schiano.

  15. Couch Fan Says:

Schiano’s worst year has double the wins that Incompetent Lovie had. Worst coach in team history? LoL more laughable rhetoric from the sheep.

But alas I forgot we are suppose to give him a pass because of what he did in Chicago and forget 2-14 ever happened like most here do.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    Couch Fan…..I concur Amigo!

    lol

  17. Drywaller Buc Says:

Schiano deserves another coaching opportunity IMO
He probably could’ve handled things a bit differently… Hindsight is 20-20….
Didn’t the Browns consider him before hiring Pettine instead?
    I didn’t like how Schiano treated Freeman, but hey… That’s life… Ya win some… Ya lose some…

  18. Hawaiian Buc Says:

So you are judging Lovie off of one year, and ignoring all he did in the previous years? Got it. You guys have football knowledge far beyond mine.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

When that one year is the worst year we’ve had in the last 20+ and his incompetent coaching had a big hand in that record? Yes.

Because he had a few good years somewhere else should have nothing to do with what he did last year. Of course you can turn a blind eye and give him a pass for the next 10 years because he was decent in Chicago. I wont though. And I’m clearly not the only one.

Blind faith. Just do it, because thinking on your own is to hard.

  20. Miguel Grande Says:

The Little General lost 25% of his team on Day 1, 100% of the locker room. If he was still here, James would be limping around on crutches with a floppy hat on.

    (Jameis)

  21. tdtb2015 Says:

@Hawaiian Buc – People forget about the Tampa 2 learning curve. A lot of people here just want to complain or get into the”Fire the coach bandwagon.” I hardly read the comments anymore.

We should see what the defense does this year before going nuts about the coaches. You can’t expect much with Winston this year. If our o-line doesn’t create better protection than last year we can expect another loosing season.

Next year has to be different though, if not then we probably look at the coaches.

  22. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @couchfan,

Who’s saying give him 10 years? Nice job putting words in my mouth. But I’m not going to fire him in the beginning of a season filled with hope. Besides, those “few good years” are more than Schiano ever had, counting college. If we are not significantly better this year, I’m all for Lovie being gone. Fair enough?

  23. BoltIsle Says:

Schiano should have never been hired in the first place. The guy turned Rutgers into a consistent mediocre program and some think he’s a great coach because of this? He got WAY too much credit for mediocrity.
At least Lovie got to a Super Bowl and with Rex Grossman no less.
Lovie deserves a mulligan for last year after the way the OC issue blew up. That gets forgotten. Don’t get the level of venom for the guy. Not saying he’s a great coach, but he’s better than our last two. Yeah he had too much faith in McKown, but at least he admitted it, as did Licht, by cutting the guy after one year and not trying to sell us a bill of goods for him staying around.
Consistently changing the coach every 2-3 years only reinforces the stereotype the franchise is inept. The vibe, and its because of the draft and Koetter hiring, is much better this year than last. You’d think Koetter was hired to be the HC and not OC. Y

  24. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Coach Schiano has done more with less than lovie!!!

    Its as simple as that!!!

Realist you have ZERO credibility because you do not understand SCOREBOARD!!!

    Greg Schiano’s NFL RECORD 11-21 .344

    Lovie Smith’s NFL RECORD 83-77 .519

Do you understand how numbers work Realist. Doesn’t matter a hill of beans what YOU think Lovie’s Chicago record represents.

Schiano NEVER posted a winning record Lovie had two seasons with 11 wins and another with 13 wins. Lovie reached the Super Bowl.

Schiano made his bones at a borderline crappy college with virtually no expectations.. He was able to look good beating the USF’s of the world on occasion.

Everybody is entitled to their opinion. If you wish to believe Schiano is a better coach than Lovie…rock on…but it’s not as SIMPLE AS THAT!!! You are the one who is too simple to recognize SCOREBOARD!!!!

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    Bam!! What he said ^

  26. Buc1987 Says:

    Everyone’s hating Realist…

  27. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

I refer back to one of my favorite examples in Mike Shanahan. This man coached the Broncos to the Super Bowl not once but twice and actually won those games, not fall apart after the 1st quarter like the Lovie Smith led Bears did vs the Colts in SB XLI. Mike Shanahan was hired in Washington for what he accomplished in a previous coaching stint and fired for what he accomplished with his “new” team. Point is past performance is no guarantee future results…the fact still stands that Lovie’s tenure as the Buc’s HC is Leeman Bennett bad. Anyone saying Schiano was the worst coach in Buc’s history either has a short memory or wasn’t a fan during the really bad years

  28. Red86 Says:

Keep Jameis as far as possible from Schiano. Bennett said he dislike playing for him. That plus other players opinions about him should say something.
