Finally! Sunshine and broiling humid conditions at One Buc Palace for training camp. Order is restored. Joe’s got all kinds of goodies and your need to know from Day 4.

Enjoy!

*Somewhat boring drill work begins and Robert Herron drops a pass from Jameis Winston. Ugh!

*Drop! Kaelin Clay in a simple route drill.

*In wide receiver drills to open practice, Austin Seferian-Jenkins made a crazy one-handed catch that the robust crowd of Bucs fans truly enjoyed.

*Outkast and Steve Wonder songs are filling the humid air. Seems someone can’t figure out if they want to listen to hip-hop or Motown.

*In goal-line drills, Charles Sims continues to open Joe’s eyes with his burst to the line. Where was that last year? Never mind, Jameis is here.

*Your Bucs punt returners today were Clay, Rannell Hall, Adam Humphries, Donteea Dye.

*9-on-7 work kicks off. There are no receivers, so there’s lot of run plays. Luke Stocker gets work at fullback and looks pretty good.

*Tough guy alert: Backup center Josh Allen hurts his knee and can barely stand on it. Jeremiah Warren comes in to replace him, and Allen angrily waives him off. Warren trots off.

*Big hole opens for Bobby Rainey with the second team.

*Lovie Smith is animated with his defense during his period, as animated as Lovie gets, which means pointing and motioning and calling guys over for coaching. Leslie Frazier is a statue most of the time.

*Will Gholston stuffs Mike James up the gut and literally picks him up off the ground after the play is whistled dead. Defenders are not supposed to tackle running backs to the ground.

*Big hole for Doug Martin with the first team.

*Big hole for Sims, this time it’s the first-team O-line versus the second team.

*11-on-11 work begins: Uh, oh! Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, under pressure overthrows Kenny Bell in the right flat on the first play and is picked impressively by Alterraun Verner. Verner raced in and not only picked the pass, but tap-dances inbounds just as he is falling out of bounds. Impressive footwork there. Today, Verner hounded Bell all morning and it may have been the best practice Joe has witnessed from the UCLA-educated corner.

*Play three is Jameis firing a strike to Lavonte David over the middle and short. Jameis must have been impersonating Blaine Gabbert early. He settled down, and the longer practice went, Jameis got better and better.

*Completion! Vincent Jackson.

*Slant pass complete from Mike Glennon to Humphries.

*Your first-team offensive line today was, left to right, Donovan Smith, Logan Mankins, Kadeem Edwards and Demar Dotson.

*Another nice play by Alterraun Verner, great driving breakup on a pass to Austin Seferian-Jenkins (ASJ).

*Jameis is off target to Kenny Bell.

*7-on-7 drill starts with Glennon dropping a pass into the bucket amid traffic to ASJ down the right sideline.

*Just a bit outside: Jameis misses ASJ on the right side.

* Fans are toe-tapping to Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky.”

* Jameis rolls right and targets Bell down the right sideline and again, Verner flies in with the break up.

* Joe recognizes Eminem music.

*Jameis with a quick-read slant to a key figure in the Bucs’ ability to draft him, Tavarres King.

*Jameis overthrows tight end Brandon Myers.

*A peek over at the 1-on-1 lineman drills on a faraway field shows Henry Melton dominating backup offensive linemen. Jacquies Smith has a very late get-off on one play. Lot of even matchups today, it seems. Though it’s always difficult to tell who’s holding and who isn’t. Logan Mankins gets beaten by cleanly by Clinton McDonald, who his having a heck of a camp so far in pads.

*Nice 15-yard completion in 7-on-7, Glennon to Tavarres King.

*Another Jameis overthrow, this time to Seferian-Jenkins.

*T.J. Fatinikun gets stoned by Donovan Smith. Nice work rookie. Smith clearly has NFL strength, size and balance. Just looks a little slow to Joe.

*Back to 11-on-11 and it’s Jacquies Smith abusing Donovan Smith around the right. Thankfully, hitting Jameis is not permitted.

*Doug Martin gets free with Smith sealing his man and Mankins pulling right.

* Jameis again goes to the left side and connects with Rannell Hall of Central Florida who burns Mike Jenkins for a big gain.

* Jameis fires the ball to Bell but it bounces off his hands and is nearly picked.

*Another Jacquies Smith lesson taught to Donovan Smith. This time the quick defensive end goes under and inside Smith.

*McDonald stuffs Doug Martin at the line of scrimmage.

*Jameis rolls right and throws, but Verner breaks up pass to Myers. Will Gholston in hot pursuit would have forced a quicker throw in a real game.

*Glennon throws about 12 yards to rookie fullback Joe Iosefa, whose got wheels for a burly dude.

*Screen executed well. Glennon to Russell Shepard.

*Fumble! Martin catch short pass on left side from Jameis and gets stripped. Joe couldn’t tell who was the thief.

*Camp meat alert! Safety Camario McFadden picks third-string QB Seth Lobato.

*McDonald again, this time blowing up Evan Smith like he wasn’t there and tackling Martin before he can take two steps. Impressive stuff.

*Defensive end T.J. Fatinikun hustling and flashing in the run game with the second unit.

*Glennon juggles a snap but recovers and hits tight end Evan Rodriguez for a 10-yard gain.

Thanks again Joe loving these updates.

*Outkast and Steve Wonder songs are filling the humid air. Seems someone can’t figure out if they want to listen to hip-hop or Motown.

Joe may want to familiarize himself with the “Shuffle” feature that has been a feature of music playing devices since oh about 1989.

not hearing GMC’s name mentioned at all

Yup. He’s going the way of Ghost Johnson.

  4. Bucsfanman Says:

Love the play-by-play! Got a chance to watch Smith(Jacquies) on ‘Hard Knocks’. I like his fire, kid’s got moxy!

  5. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Awwwww Joe, that’s a cute picture!

  6. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Joe’s, Seems like Winston has been off on a lot of throws. Is it mostly when he pressured?

  7. Lord Cornelius Says:

Loving to hear about all these holes opening up for the RBs.

  8. iamkingsu Says:

When the hell are we going to get rid of Evan Smith? If he didn’t play in the NFC north twice a year then he wouldn’t be on our roster.

I don’t wish injuries on anyone so I hopes he gets suspended for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs or the NFL’s substance abuse policy. He’s going to hold our o line back no matter what. Let’s give Josh Allen a shot at the starting gig

  9. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for the observations Joe – Nice work.

  10. Buc Neckid Says:

Mariota has Zero Interceptions this year in camp
    I know its camp, but…

  11. The Big Unit Says:

I hope this means we have a top 10 D….and not a 30th ranked offense. Sounds like the D dominated.

  12. Destinjohnny Says:

    http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25259246/marcus-mariota-has-zero-picks-through-four-days-of-training-camp

  13. Buc1987 Says:

    Ef Mariota!

  14. Yungry Says:

Jameis is throwing all over the place. Marcus is very accurate, same story as always. Nobody should be suprised. The only thing that matters is week 1! Bucs better win that game

  15. panhandlebuc Says:

The two tweets below that are…..

    Either has jaycutler

    Either has geno smith

  16. Marcus Who? Says:

Who cares about other team’s QBs? Personally, TAMPA FANS should only concern themselves with the QB starting in Tampa. Interceptions are going to happen in practice. Better to get them out now than in the games.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

From that article on CBS Sports

“Let’s be real here: this means somewhere between very little and absolutely nothing. It’s training camp, and a lot of these drills are just seven-on-seven sessions without any pressure coming from a defensive line. Going pick-less is great, but it’s not like it’s unheard of.”

So no pressure coming at Mariota…you people don’t even know what kind of practice they are running in Tenn.

Keep drooling over Mariota, perhaps come to RJS opening day wearing a Titans jersey. It will fit you just fine.

  18. Ray Rice Says:

“not hearing GMC’s name mentioned at all”

That’s because he’s being quadruple teamed every snap! #Houdini Geraldini

  19. Hawk Says:

Winston is needing these reps. It is good that Lovie/Koetter are giving them to him. Timing is VERY important between receiver, QB, AND pass protection. Koetter is going to have a pretty good idea (by the last preseason game) of what kind of plays they can get away with. But when they have time for a deep ball, Jameis and his receiver need to trust that they both know when and where the ball will be coming down. That takes practice. LOTS of practice.
This is going to be a very interesting preseason.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

It’s also good that Lovie is throwing the kitchen sink at JW unlike what Mariota is dealing with in Titanland.

  21. bee Says:

All this talk about Mariota not throwing picks. Who cares! He doesn’t play for the Bucs. If he’s not throwing picks that means that a) the reports are false or b) the Titans D sucks. Don’t you want your QB to throw some picks? So he can learn and so you know your D is actually good. Geez, calm down, let Jameis learn. Every QB throws picks…

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Hate to hear about all these holes opening up allowing the Bucs no time to throw the ball. Slow footed Donovan Smith. Yikes! Sounds like a bunch of sacks and picks. Nice recap!

  23. Armybucsfan Says:

I’m not a mariota fan what so ever but it does cause me to be concerned about winstons ability to go up against one of the worst defenses last year and make them all look like we have a clone army of darrelle revis’s out there. Now Would I like that to be the case yes!!! Is it likely ? HELL NO!! I pray Winston doesn’t look like this in the games. And for those who say it’s only PRACTICE!! Well there is an old saying by a very wise hall of fame coach that said “Practice does not make perfect. Only perfect practice makes perfect.” – Vince Lombardi

  24. Buccfan37 Says:

Don’t sweat it 87, nobody will blame you for being Winston’s biggest promoter and defender, sic them doubters. That a boy! You are Winston’s favorite Buc fan. And FS pew. Just kidding.

  25. SuperSam Says:

Accuracy and interceptions, same problems that he had in college…. is it to late to draft Mariota?

  26. Erik with Clean Athletics Says:

So, Winston had a total of like 3 completions??? Sounds a pretty rough day

  27. Bucs2015 Says:

JW is throwing all over the place. While Marcus has 0 interceptions and is very accurate. Same story as always! Nobody should be surprised. We’re still gonna beat the Titans week 1

  28. Bucs2015 Says:

Glennon was on point at least

  29. SuperSam Says:

McCown just threw a 17-yard dart to WR Brian Hartline for a TD. Can’t say enough about his accuracy so far. Threading the needle in coverage- Twitter

  30. SuperSam Says:

How do you overthrow a 6’7 Austin Seferian-jenkins!? Seriously, I thought they’ve been working “extra” together?? Its gonna be another long hard year folks.

  31. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Per Joe:
“Today, Verner hounded Bell all morning and it may have been the best practice Joe has witnessed from the UCLA-educated corner.”

Let not forget to give props, to his position coach at UCLA. Because Carnell Lake was one of the best defensive backs of All-time.

  32. Winstonseyes Says:

He overthrew 6’7 ASJ because he is wildly inaccurate and has vision problems

  33. ramon Says:

Sounds like Glennon us outperforming Winston. Why not sit Winston a year and showcase Glennon for a possible trade in the future.

  34. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Erik Clean, Jameis throws a lot more passes in practice than the ones listed by the Joe’s. I saw 3 completions just on the NFL network coverage.

  35. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    87, America’s Jameis Winston Fan!!!

  36. Yungry Says:

Ramon that would make too much sense. That’s why it’ll never happen. Glennon outplayed McCown last year and it would’ve made sense to showcase his skills for a trade and/or another offensive lineman.

  37. Yungry Says:

    87 ASJ “America’s Tight End”

  38. Lord Cornelius Says:

These over the top posting reactions are freaking hilarious to read. Let’s cut jaboo this weekend and re sign McCown who is lighting it up according to Twitter haha

  39. JabooBuc Says:

I see SuperSam is back! Jameis must have thrown an interception. I can always tell what is going on with Jameis based on SuperSam. Bad day and he’s all over the place. Good day, crickets.

    You sir, are a loser!

  40. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Supersam and Erik,

It’s comical how you are just sitting there just WAITING for something seemingly negative to be reported about Jameis,

First off, it’s the first few days of his first ever training camp.

Just make sure to avail yourself when he is doing good things in meaningful times like real games.

Don’t hide when he wins, since you like to only poke your head in when any mistakes are made.

  41. Destinjohnny Says:

Winston had soooooo much talent @ FSU last year. I worry about his accuracy and his ultra slow delivery. Don’t get mad at me for telling the truth but the pro’s are going to feast on this guy and you are starting to see that. Watch the highlights from camp for the most part he always throws high or behind guys. His throwing motion has to much motion.
Joe you have been watching tell me i am wrong..

  42. Bucnut2 Says:

I wanted us to draft Mariota. The homers said kW is pro ready. He’s now my ab and I’m sick. This guy is an int machine,or as joe says gunslinger

  43. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

ArmyBucsFan: What you should worry about is the quote “You play like you practice.”

  44. LakeLandBuc Says:

Jameis Winston was graded an B for Sunday, an C for Monday and Tuesday. Not bad for a 21 year old rookie who only had 2 years of college football. It will get better everyday that’s the key improving daily. I’m predicting in 2 year when Jameis will still be only 23, he will be a top 12 QB in this league. I also believe that the Bucs will have a top 10 defense this season and for many seasons to come. GO BUCS

  45. Destinjohnny Says:

we drafted the wrong guy and i wish i was wrong

  46. JabooBuc Says:

DestinJohnny is wrong. We got the right guy.

  47. Buc1987 Says:

You can’t fix DestinJohnny when he was a Winston hater to begin with…let him be wrong all he wants…and talk foolish all he wants.

  48. Buc1987 Says:

Look all you fools talking our of your ass in panic….he’s here now. Soi now you all just look like whiny little babies at this point.

Waaaa waaaa I wanted Mariota and and and waaa waaa sob sob.

    Do you need a tissue?

Are you coming to the home opener? Where are you sitting?

    Once again Mariota buttboys :

From that article on CBS Sports

“Let’s be real here: this means somewhere between very little and absolutely nothing. It’s training camp, and a lot of these drills are just seven-on-seven sessions without any pressure coming from a defensive line.”

  50. tmaxcon Says:

for those of you who have selective memory McCown was accurate in bucs camp last yesr… how did that work out…

Jameis will be fine and will actually Excell once the incompetent Lovie Smith is replaced and legit NFL offensive line is built.

Let’s wait and judge Mariota when the big boys are chasing him for real on Sundays. Unfortunately he will not face a NFL caliber D line until week 2. Mariota is one scramble away from co-hosting a radii show with glennon and glennon’s brother.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

“Mariota is one scramble away from co-hosting a radii show with glennon and glennon’s brother.”

    LOL the truth!

  52. Stanglassman Says:

    Jameis 26-37 (70+%) 2 INT today

  53. Buc1987 Says:

Stan…that’s just unacceptable…I’m going to cry now.

    Waaaaa waaaaa

  54. Buc1987 Says:

    Mariota’s going to SUCK!

  55. Destinjohnny Says:

Dont hate the guy at all and I hope I’m wrong i really do. I just feel like he dosent have it to be a top 10 QB. Prove me wrong Jameis Winston.

  56. Abdominal Snowman Says:

WOW! 2 Practices in pads under his belt and people are demanding perfection from a 21 year old rookie. Get over it Mariota butt plugs, Winston is our QB and you either get behind him or invest in your Bortles jersey.

Supersam, you’re a tool who keeps beating the same worn out drum. Check ebay maybe you can find a used Mariota jock to sniff.

tmaxcon- It’s a new year, how about waiting to see this defense in live action before proclaiming them unprofessional or Lovie incompetant. I appreciate you for having your beliefs but will you admit it when you’re wrong? We’ll see.

Rookie qb’s throw interceptions, especially in practice. That’s what practice is for. I don’t care if Jameis beats Peyton’s record for most INTs by a rookie because of what Jameis does best, and that WINS TONs. This is the time to be excited about our team, all you pessimist schmucks do me a favor, look up so the sky may fall on you.

  57. Greg Says:

    We can only prey
    Lol

  58. Buc1987 Says:

I’ll wait until the 4th pre-season game. If Winston tightens up by then and I think he will. I drop another wager out there for anyone to take me up on it.

The wager will be that Winston will not only beat the Titans, but will have better “passing” numbers at the end of the game.

Just gotta wait and watch the preseason games.

  59. Buc1987 Says:

4 days into practice Winston threw 2 picks today with 70% of his passes. Oh he’s just going to be terrible.

    pssh Buc’s fans!

  60. tmaxcon Says:

    Abdominal Snowman

Yes, if Lovie wins l’ll gladly eat a big S**t sandwich live on YouTube. Based on Lovies philophies and track record I have zero confidence that he is capable of adjustment or change. It’s a different league since his last decent playoff run 10 years ago. Hiring Lovie as a coach was not a mistake however giving him full control of a roster and staff was asinine.

    All Hail Jaboo.

  61. Bucnut2 Says:

70% on what? a bunch of checkdowns??? Everybody wake up. QB’s do NOT become more accurate in the NFL. 5 years ago the media was making the same case for #5. Remember how that turned out?

  62. Nirobe Says:

Is like the same frustrated person writing those sad comments because interceptions. S**t if he is any near Dalton, Stafford or even Luck which int’s are crazy i’ll be glad

  63. Bucnut2 Says:

Wonder who will be playing QB for our Bucs in 2017?

  64. JabooBuc Says:

Brady threw a pic today. The horror!

  65. Abdominal Snowman Says:

hahaha 87 that’s freakin great! Can’t stop laughing.

  66. Buc1987 Says:

Drew Brees threw 3 picks today in practice……HE SUCKS and I told you so!

  67. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I haven’t seen this much Winston hate since before the draft. The haters were quiet until he throws a few practice INTs. Where were you guys all summer?

  68. Abdominal Snowman Says:

Lol tmaxcon- I wouldn’t hold you to that. Although i hope you are wrong for obvious reasons, as i’m sure you hope so too.

I think this team has a lot more of Jason Licht’s fingerprints on it than most would assume. I could especially see it in how we’ve been drafting, which is very encouraging. Although it is too soon to see if they are successful or not. If Lovie hasn’t changed then he must have been seriously locked up to only draft 1 defensive player in 2 drafts.

  69. Buc1987 Says:

BuccaneEric75…they were underground in a bunker stockpiling grenades.

  70. Buc1987 Says:

    Where’s Barry and robert 9?

  71. BuccaneEric75 Says:

87, I’m waiting for them too. Robert9 jumped into Barry’s stolen car and headed off together to watch Josh Freeman at Dolphins practice.

  72. Buc1987 Says:

lol…Or Barry stole robert’s car so now robert is hitchhiking to Miami. lol

    You guys are too funny.

  73. BuccaneEric75 Says:

As long as their not waiting for a ride from Freeman they’ll be all good!

  74. tmaxcon Says:

    Abdominal Snowman

I agree 100% with you. I do get the feeling it was more of a Licht draft. Whether Lovie finally accepted the fact he stinks at personnel decisions or the Glazers clipped his wings a bit I do like our draft this year. I’m especially excited about Kenny Bell and Alexander. I like marpet but feel the price was a little high for d3 guy. Now, if we can get Lovie and his lapdog DC to call a defensive game plan to win the versus playing not too lose I’ll be happy. They called such passive game plans last year it felt like prevent defense from 2nd qtr on.

  75. Mo_Downs Says:

I live in Chicago. Bears season tickets have been in my family since 1962. I’ve seen all the greats from Bears lore. First of all, Lovie Smith has the 3rd best winning percentage in the history of the team. And, he is only 1 of 3 coaches in their LONG, LONG history to get the Bears to the NFL championship. He was fired after a season of posting a 10-6 record. I think the Bears (and Bucs) owners would give up their left-one to have been that successful the last 2 seasons.

The Bucs are LUCKY to have him as their head coach. Lovie seems really excited (No, really) about his 2015 team. ATC, it ain’t about the money, it’s about Jameis and his new (“Now, we get it”) defense.

I’ve sat through a lot of below zero afternoons at Wrigley Field and Soldier Field watching the Bears…lose. Dude, I’m talking decades. Trust me when I say enjoy this team’s successes while you can. This franchise is on the way up and will be there for however long they can hold onto their good players AND coaches.

    Go Bucs…!!!

  76. Buc1987 Says:

“felt like prevent defense from 2nd qtr on.”

tmaxcon…now you’re giving him credit? I’d say from start to finish.

  79. LakelandBuc Says:

As No. 1 overall picks tend to do, Jameis Winston has brought heightened interest to his team’s training camp. Along with fans showing up in record numbers, many esteemed NFL media members have been in attendance at One Buccaneer Place as well, including NFL Network analyst, Charley Casserly who visited Bucs camp on Tuesday. The longtime general manager, who won three Super Bowls in Washington, addressed one of the pressing issues surrounding Winston – interceptions. During the last two practices Winston has thrown a combined five picks, leading some to question his decision making even more than before. But Casserly isn’t putting a lot of stock into individual throws at camp, insisting that people should instead focus on Winston’s overall development. “You have to take it as the whole picture,” Casserly said. “What you do when you evaluate rookies is you look for parts. Is this what I saw in college? Well yeah, he has a strong arm, the ball comes out of the release pretty well and you see his ability to read defenses. Does he do it every day? No. “So what you’re doing is teaching him. This is a teaching camp, so it’s hard to judge improvement because you’re watching grass grow every day. You have to come back after a couple weeks and, all of the sudden, nobody cut the lawn and it looks better. And that’s what you’re going to see here. So for me, I look for parts and I saw parts here today. I don’t get hung up on stats in practice… In other words, did the receiver run the right route? If the ball is over here, did the receiver make the right cut? I think you have to look at the big picture.”
Casserly acknowledged Winston’s 18 interceptions last season, but claims the few ill-advised throws in training camp aren’t so much a reflection of 2014 but rather a young quarterback getting a feel for the system and what’s asked of him. And so far, a lot has been asked. Overall, while evaluating seven-on-seven competition, Casserly said there are two things you don’t want from your quarterback: running or throwing too many check downs. A known gunslinger with 4.9 speed, Winston has done neither. Time will tell if the Buccaneers made the right decision on April 30, but for now, Casserly bases his opinion off the two seasons he saw Winston in college. “I mean (Winston) won a lot of games,” Casserly said. “The guy has talent; they made the right choice. From everything we know today, they made the right choice.”

    From something called Wikipedia:

“The Chicago Bears have played more than 1,000 games. Of those games, five different coaches have won NFL championships with the team: George Halas in 1921, 1933, 1940, 1941, 1946 and 1963; Ralph Jones in 1932; Hunk Anderson and Luke Johnsos in 1943; and Mike Ditka in 1985.”

FWIW, all of the above former coaches of the Bears had a better winning percentage than Lovie Smith.
