Glass Half Full?
August 4th, 2015Tampa Bay fans have been crying for an edge pass rush. They’ve also been weeping for a left tackle since Donald Penn left the building.
Today at practice, Bucs rookie left tackle Donovan Smith joined the first team offensive line.
From Joe’s vantage point, defensive end Jacquies Smith, playing the right side today, took the rookie to school on multiple occasions.
Here’s Joe’s exclusive HD video of Donovan Smith getting beaten on one pass play.
Like everything in training camp, it’s a mixed bag. Success on offense is often a defensive failure, and vice versa.
Jacquies Smith looked sharp on the right side and offered a positive scouting report on Donovan Smith. He said he has “a great punch” and “moves his feet very well.” Joe would agree, but the rookie left tackle also appears a bit slow.
Jacquies Smith added that the rookie left tackle is the kind of guy who asks defensive ends how things look when they go against him. He wants the feedback, Smith said.
It’s early in training camp and the battles are brewing on the edge. It’s at least much more entertaining than what seemed to be tag-team decision to take it easy last year. Joe’s referring to neither Anthony Collins nor Michael Johnson doing much of anything against each other in training camp. It was a stalemate of stale-bread players.

Maybe Jack Smith and Donavan Smith can be our version of “Ghostbusters”.

Thanks, now I’m thoroughly concerned. Jamies would’ve been sacked and probably bleeding after this play.

Jack Smith will be beating a lot of Left Tackles this season.

I am very excited Donovan Smith is playing with the first team. One play does not mean he will struggle this year. Is Jacquies Smith better than Randy Gregory or Joey Bosa? Donovan handled both of them in college and I am sure he is going to do just fine. Maybe, just maybe our defensive ends are playing really well? Johnson, Smith, Goldston and English are going to being it! Donovan Smith is a really good OL and I can not wait for him to dominate. Any updates on Marpet?

Enough with the panic buttons. D Smith has had exactly two practices at the professional level while in pads and actually able to engage a defensive player. Even some of this is not supposed to be at full speed. Not until preseason games will we truly begin to see how either side of the line is progressing.
