Look, no one pined, beat the drum, hollered from rooftops, and coerced more bartenders that the Bucs needed to draft “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, more than Joe.
No team cried out for a decent quarterback more than the Bucs. No team needed a young quarterback to build around more than the Bucs. No team needed to step into the 21st Century of the NFL more than the Bucs.
Still, Joe expects a learning curve for Jameis. Not nearly as bad as an Ali Marpet learning curve, but history in the NFL shows the majority of rookie quarterbacks struggle. Given the fact the Bucs have a shaky offensive line, that does not bode well for a smooth Jameis first year.
No one knows this more than the man whose very career could be on the line if Jameis washes out or is crippled due to a jailbreak up front, and that would be Bucs coach Lovie Smith.
Already early in training camp, there are times where Jameis was damned impressive, and other times Jameis looked like, well, a rookie. Lovie said that is expected.
“You can say just quarterbacks in general,” Lovie said. “For us, it’s our defense and it’s our offense. I would hope that we are going to have good offensive days and good defensive days. That’s saying our team is going to be okay. Our goal is to get Jameis ready. We’re doing a lot of things that we normally don’t do this early – defensively too – to try and give him as many looks as we possibly can. The blitz period is where he had the most trouble. That’s how it should be for a young quarterback.”
This dovetails right into what the next Simeon Rice said, Bucs defensive end George Johnson, when he noted a few days ago the defense is in full-blown Operation Rattle Jameis mode, to try to test the young quarterback at every move.
It sounds like a strong strategy to advance the development of Jameis, but Joe hopes the defense isn’t overlooking their key objective: preparing to stop opposing offenses, not just your rookie quarterback face-of-the-franchise.

The problem is that we don’t know if our defense is good or our offense is bad….when we play eachother, it’s very hard to tell what’s up…..

After four days of practice, The Tennessean is reporting that Marcus Mariotta has completed 67% of his passes and NO interceptions.
The comparisons have begun!!!

I’m pulling for Jameis & the Bucs with all my heart & soul, but I have a weird feeling about Mariota. I think he might come out and instantly be one of the best QB’s in the league. That would be a tough pill to swallow (after everything Buc fans have endured). I just hope it’s like a McCoy/Suh type situation and they both end up being great.

We don’t have Mariota, we have Winston. I don’t care what Mariota shows or if he is any good. The Bucs have to go with what we got, don’t care about the Titans except that the Bucs kick them around in the opener. Good idea to put heavy pressure on Winston so he knows what to expect, not that he doesn’t already,but repetition builds confidence. With some the better Mariota looks the regrets are amplified. Mariota who?

They are bragging that Mariotta has had ZERO interceptions in four days fof practice and a completion rate of 67%. I don’t think Jameis is going to winm the camp stats war. Let’s hope that he is more effective and can win games.

It goes to show that some of these Bucs fans that wanted Mariota soooooo bad should not be Buc fans any longer. It does for me anyways..why bother still thinking about Mariota when it comes to JW? The Titans could be running an entirely different type of practice. Like Joe said yesterday most of his INT’s came when they blitzed the hell out Jameis. That’s what practice is for.
BTW…this Mariota info can’t be found on NFL.com. You actually have to google search his name to find out this info. I’m so glad that we still have Buc fans that are comparing the 2 by looking up Mariota on google. smh

I thought Winston was miles ahead of Mariota as a QB who was more NFL ready? Mariota can’t read NFL defenses or command a huddle they said? Winston better be the better QB in the early goings or Lovie and Jason are both gone and FSU apologist having to bury their heads in the sand after promising us Winston was the best QB prospect since Andrew Luck. I have no interest in ANY EXCUSES, just production!

Joe has come up wit a bad o-line, no run game and a learning curve. Finding out DBs’ are faster. Really? If he is Pro ready he should know it. No He is an excellent college QB that now must LEARN.

This is what I suggested from the very start. From the beginning too many people made the debate and either or proposition. It’s very possible that both of these players will have good perhaps great NFL careers. Think Flacco and Ryan, which would you rather have?
Fameis seems to have found a home in Tampa. He’s fit in very nicely with the team. I’m fine with Mariota having success except when he plays the Bucs.
Ideal scenario would be Mariota versus Fameis in a Super Bowl. That’s a few years away IF it ever happens.

The last four QB’s taken number one overall all started from day one.
Luck, Newton, Bradford, Stafford.
In their first 18 games:
Luck: 26 TDs and 19 INTs
Newton: 23 TDs and 19 INTs
Bradford: 19 TDs and 15 INTs
Stafford: 28 TDs and 22 INTs
Glennon: 29 TDs and 15 INTs

The comparisons are NOT going to go away. In fact, they will intensify as the season progresses. QBs picked with the first two picks of the entire draft are going to be fodder for every talking bobblehead (and print punk) for the entire season. Starting the two against each other in the season opener is only going to make it worse.
For those who are already comparing the two, just remember, they are PRACTICING. At this point, I am neither excited or depressed…
OK, maybe a little excited.

BucFan20…they have been throwing the kitchen sink at him to get him ready for the NFL. He’s had 1 day of full pads practice. 1 day, that’s it.

I don’t give a crap about Mariota – other than as a football fan who likes to see good players make great plays.
Jameis Winston is the Buccaneers QB. Mariota lovers/admirers need to go talk about Mariota over on the Titans blog sites.
I’m sure like myself, many here are somewhat sensitive to the subject because quite a few of the Mariota lovers were such total a-holes regarding Jameis Winston for months pre draft – even once it was fairly obvious the Bucs would be drafting Jameis – they continuously trashed his character mercilessly – day in and day out. For a while there it got to the point that I didn’t even like reading the comments here because there were so many militant anti-Jameis posters. Thankfully, most all have slunk back under the rocks they originally crawled out from under. We surely don’t need any revivals from that crowd.
Winston is the Bucs QB and the Buccaneers will be “relevant” again as a result. That’s all that matters.
Why would any Bucs fan care what Mariota does other than relating to game 1 of the 2015 season?

4th day of training camp and can’t believe the negativity about our team and comparing Winston to Mariotta. You bitch about our offense when JW gets intercepted, and then you bitch about our defense when JW makes his completions. That’s all you do is bitch bitch and bitch some more. If you don’t like this team stop making comments and become a Tennessee fan. It could be that Mariotta is making all those completions because their defense sucks. I would be very worried if JW didn’t throw those interceptions as it would not bold well for our improved defense. JW is in a earning process..Give the kid a break, have a cocktail and relax. It’s going to be a fun year. Just remember how bad our OL was last year..If we had an OC like we have now we could have won at least 4-5 more games.

A lot of people that come to this site are mere Trolls waiting for something negative to happen, so they can come on here and spread their negativity. This is the Bucs second day in pads and Dirk Koetter is teaching Jameis how to read NFL defenses, this is not college. This game is a whole lot faster, and the defenses are a whole lot more complicated. But this is the only way a rookie will learn, he won’t learn a thing sitting on the bench or making ” simple, safe throws”. You gotta let him make his mistakes in practice and then go over the tape with him in the film room.Jameis Winston is 21 years old, the Bucs want him to be around for the next 10-15 seasons. I’m not concern about Jameis i’m more concerned about our running game, we need the running game to succeed for Jameis to succeed. And I really believe that they will succeed.

I wanted Mariota. Winston was second on my list. I’m as interested in Mariota as I am in Carr, who I wanted the year before.
But Winston is our QB now, so I want him to succeed. Doesn’t mean I won’t follow Carr and Mariota from afar…just like I do with Mannings, Brees, and Aaron Rodgers.

I hope, on defense, this is a sign of things to come. With every one comfortable compared to a year ago, Frazier and Lovie need to give opposing offenses multiple looks. show Mariota a cover two man with our corners at the line then bring down our strong safety to cover their tight end and blitz Lavonte David! Throw everything at Mariota! Make him read our defense and either command his huddle or get trampled! Time for Madden!
