Bucs second-year wide receiver Robert Herron
Once upon a time, the Bucs gave $10 million guaranteed to a wide receiver who already had proven he had Jell-O hands and Vaseline fingers (no, not a tight end.)
It was mind-numbing. A team just can’t carry a receiver that can’t catch.
So that’s why Joe was so down on Robert Herron, a speedy sixth-round pick last year. Practice after practice, Herron just couldn’t seem to squeeze the football. And it was a circus act when the Bucs tried to see if he could catch punts.
Bad hands kept plaguing Herron, who was buried by the end of the season. He caught five passes through Week 6, and no more.
But young players sometimes find their way. And Joe just give it up for Herron having a strong practice yesterday. They guy appears to run tight routes and is athletic. And for a day, squeezed the rock, his last catch was a leaping one-hand grab over the middle of the field.
Asked what stood out from the entire practice, Lavonte David pointed to No. 10.
“What stood out to me? I mean, that last play in team period, when (wide receiver) Rob Herron caught that one-handed catch. The safety was back there waiting for the interception and Rob just stuck a hand out and just made the play,” David said. “But the main thing was everybody is on the same page. There weren’t a lot of mental busts, that I can tell, from the defense. The guys were on their jobs, doing what they are supposed to do, and that’s real promising.”
Louis Murphy and his “freak” ankle injury that Lovie Smith won’t talk about has opened up the wide receiver competition in a big way.
Joe suspects Herron has moved a notch up the crowded ranks. It also doesn’t hurt when the regime drafted you, you’re 23 years old, and you can fly.
Updated 9:35 a.m. – After Joe typed up all this love on Herron for this morning. Herron went ahead and did this during a drill.

2 things that we know are not true. Lovie runs an aggressive defense, and that Lovie has “opened up a competition” at any position!!!

Okay Realist!! Ive re-read what you said. Now if your assessment of Lovie’s defense not being aggressive is based solely off last season well all I’ll say is watch this season. Now guys actually know what they are doing. Now if you’re basing it from a historical stand point I beg to differ. Those Bears defenses looked like a lot of things. None aggressive wasn’t one of them.

You do know that the “monsters of the mid-way” is mostly known for the 1940-41 Bears defense! That was a long time ago, and as dated as Lovie is, that was way way before his time!!!

Nole/drdneast- how many players did the Incompetent One force onto the football field last year that could not play? The list is long and nauseating. It definitely includes Herron. Just think about every single player acquisition in 2014 and try to find one not named Mike Evans that performed well? Certainly all the big money guys pooped their panties but also the role players and backups. I’m sick about how bad incompetent Lovie Smith and his little lapdog GM so badly screwed up talent evaluation and acquisition. It is so clear why we have such massive holes in our starting lineup and no depth. Herron batting passes down with no one covering him in practice is a symptom.

Herron is going to have to be consistent in holding onto the ball if he wants to make this roster. The Bucs have quite a few talented young receivers – some of whom will be playing in this league for other teams.

Animosity Amigos team leader Dallasbuc don’t ask me anything about last season when you know my thoughts are last season was a tank job. Simple and plain. Ask me questions in regards to Lovie and the performance of this team this time next season. And Realist!! I know that moniker was well before Lovie’s Bears,they carried it week though.

I have my 6 receivers for the Bucs, Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson, Rannell Hall, Kenny Bell, Kaelin Clay, Russell Shepard. But i’m not concerned about the passing game, our running game will be the key to our success. If we have a good running game like we did with Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott, even somewhere near that level. It would take a lot of pressure off our rookie QB, and it will give our defense a lot of rest in this heat. I’m looking for Doug Marting to get around 1,000 YDS, which isn’t that much about 63 YPG. Bobby Rainey should get us another 500 YDS, about 32 YPG a game. I’m looking for Charles Sims to be mostly a receiving back, but he should give us another 300 YDS, maybe 20 YPG. So those 3 backs will have to give us 1,800 YPG for this offense to succeed, about the same as what Alstott and Dunn use to give us. I’m not concern about how many picks Jameis throws in practice, because he won’t be throwing 40 passes a game during the season. If Dirk Koetter put him in that position, then he’s setting Jameis up for failure. Matt Ryan threw 19 INTS as a senior at Boston College and the Atlanta Falcons still drafted him with the 3rd pick of the draft. But the Falcons made a smart move when they signed Michael Turner from the Chargers. Matt Ryan threw 434 passes that season while Michael Turner ran 376 times for 1699 yards and the Falcons went 11-5 with a rookie QB. I’m looking for Jameis to attempt no more than 400 passes this season, which is exactly 25 PPG. I’m looking for our best run blockers to start on our O-Line,i’m looking for Luke Stocker to make the team as a blocking TE. I’m looking for this offense to be ” run first”, i’m looking for a committee of rushers. I’m looking for Doug Martin to lead the pack, our goal should be to gain 2,000 yards rushing, which is about 125 YPG, which shouldn’t be a problem.

As for BucRealist, I noticed you didn”t respond to my original post, just spewed out more negativity.
It is not unusual for players other than No. 1 to make a noticeable impacting their first year.
Hell, we had a starting safety and CB”s during our glory years drafted 2-4who didn’t start till their third or fourth year. BK, Ronda Barber, John Lynch.
Even the great Warren Sapp didn’t make an impact until his third year.
Thank god you weren’t the GM or you would have cut them all.
As for the FAs, if the cupboard hadn’t been left completely bare by the previous regimes, then we wouldn’t have had to go so much in that direction.
But of course all of these real facts won’t get in the way of your prejudice and hatred of all things Lovie.
