Day 3 – Training Camp Notes & Observations

August 3rd, 2015

LovieCamp

It sure is soggy at One Buc Palace, but the Bucs threw on the pads and hit each other for the first practice today. Joe got a first-hand look.

Enjoy!

*Yes, Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, threw interceptions today. Three? Joe confesses to missing the first chunk of practice when Jameis turned the ball over like a drunk handing out dollar bills at Mons Venus. Damn those flooded roads. Good for the defense. Learn, Jameis, learn. Lovie Smith said it was the “blitz period” in which Jameis struggled.

*Joe jumped in when 1-on-1 drills with linemen kicked off. Here are some rapid fire results:

Larry English beats Patrick Omameh easily.

George Johnson makes Kevin Pamphile look like a milk carton.

Demar Dotson pancakes Jaquies Smith. That was fun. Don’t get off balance when Doston is punching your chest.

Offsides! T.J. Fatinikun. “Let’s go Fat!” screams D-line coach Joe Cullen.

Kadeem Edwards locks up Williams Gholston.

Clinton McDonald slips and Logan Mankins pins him in the mushy ground.

Holding! Edwards can’t handle Gholston inside.

Da’Quan Bowers driving back Garrett Gilkey but not enough to give Bowers a flat out win.

Uh, Oh! George Uko drops a swim move on Evans (Dietrich) Smith and flies past him.

*11-on-11 work is back. And Doug Martin, running with the first team, makes a nice cut for about five yards.

*Drop! Wide receiver Donteea Dye. Lots of young guys are getting their shot at receiver with Louis Murphy out with a mysterious injury Lovie called “freak.”

*Charles Sims runs left. Stuffed!

* Joe isn’t sure who the coach was but somebody freaked out on the Bucs’ offensive line. “Stop f@cking walking around!” Could have heard him all the way in Clearwater.

*A flash from Keith Tandy. One a 3rd-and-6 call, Jameis tried to force a pass in traffic over the middle and Tandy raced in and nearly had a pick. He did break up the pass.

* The defense, like in underwear football, seemed to be flying around. Good sign.

*Here comes the running game with the second team. Bobby Rainey with a long run up the gut. Man, he’s quick. Gilkey was quickly praised for his work at right guard. Mike James followed with a long run up the gut left of center. Dirk Koetter darts out into the fray to praise backup center Josh Allen.

* Later, Joe heard what Joe is guessing to be assistant offensive line coach Butch Barry, “There you go, Ali!”

* Danny Lansanah continues to carry over his stellar underwear football play from OTAs. Tavarres King, a key figure in winning the Chase for Jameis, caught a pass near the left sideline and was wiped out on a Lansanah solo tackle.

* The very next play, Mike Glennon drops the football in the bucket, also known as King’s arms, about 15 yards over the middle in tight coverage.

* Jameis reached back for that 95 mph fastball of his and rifles the ball down the middle for Godzilla Evans for a first down. Evans fumbled just after the whistle blew but went all out diving and chasing the loose ball with hungry defenders. Evans got a talking to and was told not to sacrifice his body when a play is dead.

* Charles Sims looks like a different player. Joe may have been rough on him last year but Joe also noted his development likely was stunted by his preseason ankle surgery. In the first day of pads, Smith had exceptional quickness to the line of scrimmage. This is good to see. Maybe Lovie was right?

*On Sims’ last big run, it was Donovan Smith sealing Clinton McDonald.

* Time to thread the needle. Jameis throws between four defenders to complete a pass to Central Florida’s Rannell Hall. It was not bad coverage at all.

*Good day for Robert Herron. Catches pass over middle and gets drilled by Bradley McDougald. Herron held on.

* Welcome to the NFL Jameis: The porous offensive line allowed heat on Jameis all day. On one particular play, Jameis was flushed. He rolled left and lobbed a ball to Kenny Bell down the left sideline that looked to be a sure touchdown. But no! Cornerback Johnthan Banks races in to recover and bats the ball away. Play of the day for Banks. Guess Jameis is learning that a third-year NFL starting corner is just a wee bit faster than your garden variety corner from Wake Forest (for the thin-skinned: “Garden variety” means “average” and no average college corner is as good as a seasoned three-year starting corner in the NFL.)

* As for the offensive line, had the Bucs allowed Jameis to be hit, he may have needed a stretcher. The defensive line savaged the offensive line all afternoon. No need to point fingers, but the usual suspects were worked over regularly by Gerald McCoy, McDonald and others.

*Bottom of the roster lovers, linebacker Khaseem Greene and linebacker Rannell Hall had a dustup when they collided while running with the third-team units.

*Mankins seen handling Henry Melton rather easily.

*One-hand dynamic grab by Robert Herron about 20 yards down the middle of the field. Asked to single out his play of the day at practice, Lavonte David called Herron’s grab. Third-string QB Seth Lobato threw the pass.

*Clinton McDonald would have hit Jameis twice on successive plays, beating Kadeem Edwards and then Mankins.

*Evan Smith limps off to the side after appearing to turn an ankle.

*Defense jams 10 in the box. Jameis does not change the play, so it seems, and Doug Martin runs left. Stuffed!

*FLAG! False start, Demar Dotson.

*Low laser thrown by Jameis, 15 yards complete to Austin Seferian-Jenkins.

*Drop! Winston to Mike Evans. Bad drop 25 yards down field. Evans upset after practice telling Joe he let Jameis down on a couple of catches.

Thanks Joe. I live for these updates. Quick question Joe, I know you said the weather kept you from the early part of training camp but, is there any possibility at all the Winston’s picks were weather related?

  2. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Here we go with the OL again. The OL is gonna get the QB put on the DL.

  3. Joe Says:

Don’t think so. Practice field drains well. Didn’t notice any errant footballs from any quarterback that could be blamed on a wet ball.

To be fair, Jameis was being chased worse than a Hooters Calendar girl on Clearwater Beach during spring break.

  4. Dreambig Says:

Thanks Joe! Good recap! Hope that Oline improves soon.

  5. Joe Says:

Thanks. Either the defense was lights out, or, as Joe suspects, the expected culprits were truly horrid today. Or maybe both?

    Was. Not. Pretty.

  6. rayjay1122 Says:

It is early but the fact that the defense is looking so good hopefully is not just an indication of lousy offensive execution. We will learn a lot August 15th.

  7. BucFan20 Says:

Dotson will lead us in flags and cost in points again this year.

  8. Scott Says:

How was the second round pick Donovan Smith looking? Was he looking at least somewhat worthy of that high pick

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Great all around rundown, not all the play but the description of them. Have to shore up that O line to keep Winston on his feet when the hitting starts.

  10. Brent Says:

Told you with that rag a$$ o-line we better have a good backup qb like mg. you heard it Winston should be on a stretcher!!

  11. rayjay1122 Says:

NFL.com reporting Michael Johnson out with an MCL sprain. At least he is no longer our Ghost. That title belongs to the OL now.

  12. bucsbedabest Says:

    The Offensive Line –

    1) Larry English beats Patrick Omameh easily. Omameh should be in the unemployment line with Collins.
    2) George Johnson makes Kevin Pamphile look like a milk carton. Pamphile could not handle right tackle last year, what makes Warhop think he will handle left tackle this year?
    3) Edwards can’t handle Gholston inside. Not a good sign.
    4) Da’Quan Bowers driving back Garrett Gilkey. All year long!
    5) Donovan Smith sealing Clinton McDonald. Maybe Donovan Smith should be starting at left tackle? What do I know anyway?
    6) Why the @#$% don’t the Bucs sign Evan Mathis? Yea, what do I know?

  13. Tampa Tony Says:

Is it possible for the o line to be worse than last year? With Lovie anything is possible.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Tony with this o-line all bets are off. That’s why I keep saying 4-6 wins tops. They are the specific reason actually. If they were average I’d bump it up to 2 more wins, but they’re not and it still doesn’t look good.

“NFL.com reporting Michael Johnson out with an MCL sprain.”

That’s okay for him, he probably didn’t want to play anyways…

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Joe,

I am curious, considering the fact that Lovie has a long history of burning through OC’s coupled with Tedfords heart issues last year, do the Bucs have a staff cardiologist close to Koetter at all times while he watches his o-line attempt to block. Hopefully the training staff has their Heart cards up tp date and there are plenty of AED stations available. I would hate to have another year of built in excuses for incompetent Lovie Smith.

  17. Fsuking Says:

It’s day 1 and apparently the only people who played bad were the people everyone knew were bad. It’s okay, let’s not be downers and predict a 4 win season until at least the pre-season. If the football Gods exist and we get Evan Mathis, we would have 2 pro-bowlers on the interior line with a solid RT, promising rookie LT and a turd at center. That would be a top 10 line on recycled paper.

  18. richbucsfan Says:

So there you have it folks… The OL is the problem, will be the problem, constantly the problem. Pathetic, pathetic, pathetic…If they can’t handle the poor excuse of a d-line is piecemeal at best, how are they ever going to handle the better defenses in this league? Sure, it’s day 3, but look at the talent… it could be day 33 or 303, it won’t matter. The owners of the Bucs and Rays have a similar philosophy…field only mediocre squads and milk the TV money.

  19. tval Says:

Dirk will use this time to find the weakest areas of the oline and build his offense around that. I can see jameis struggling with blitz early in the nfl, because he was so good at that in college. Nobody learns from their mistakes faster and with better results than jameis. He’ll see the blitz is made to try to get you to rush the throw, and they jump the safety valve. Patience and most importantly teach him how to throw it away early in downs, early on, if in serious trouble. He’ll get the feel of the nfl pocket and get back to his old magic

  20. The original "Kevin" Says:

Good news of the day…..Evan Smith rolled his ankle…Im sorry I know thats wrong for me to say but it feels so right

  21. Pawel Says:

I thin the OL will be worse than last year.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

rich…even when the Rays are winning and sitting on top of the division no fans show up. So why go out and spend on players?

  23. Cspan Says:

We should have drafted AJ Cann instead of Ali marpet

  24. Dick2111 Says:

Until the OLine develops some chemistry, I’d expect the DLine to have a significant advantage. Plus our DLine is going to blow up a lot of OLines across the NFL this year … that’s where our best talent is.

The OLine will improve going against them every day. They have to, or they’ll all be on IR before the season starts. Patience.

  25. BucsFan85 Says:

Thanks for the play-by-play Joe, means a lot to a fan in Central Fl who can’t make it to practices.

  26. INDYbucsfan Says:

    Wow you guys are insane!
It was the FIRST REAL PRACTICE!
Stop over reacting to a not perfect day.
Sound like a bunch of grumpy old men

  27. Buc1987 Says:

INDYbucsfan…the o-line is going to be put under a microscope during this training camp like never before, and that means by every Bucs fan.

  28. ptwalk Says:

Exactly, the first day, and on top of that defenses are always ahead of offenses.

  29. ndog Says:

So the negative Nellies on here would have said see we have the worst dline ever if our oline was dominant. For goodness sake you didn’t even see it with your own eyes and your freaking out. Thats why going to games is so difficult anymore, there are morons all around.

  30. BucsFan85 Says:

Like i’ve said before, look at what the o-line is up against. Let’s be proud of both of our lines.

  31. LakelandBuc Says:

The O-Line will have a good season this year, and the Bucs need to throw everything at Jameis. Throw every defense at him, he gotta learn to read defense.

    Ha!

  35. tmaxcon Says:

    Tickrdr

I’ll bring the beer. I think I’m ready to assist with a Stent if needed. I watched a youtube video. I’m ready….lol obviously I’m being a douchebag much respect doc.

Maybe instead of handing out bobbleheads and other stadium promo items they should hand out metoprolol & benazepril samples on game day.

  36. Mo_Downs Says:

ESPN had a good review of Titans’ practice.

    NOTEWORTHY:

Mariota continues to play well. He only runs when things break down. 67% Avg. No picks (reported). Let’s hope the training wheels are off the Titans secondary and they’re trying HARD.

ATC, iF their secondary can’t come up with a few picks in “practice” then I’m looking forward to the 1st RS game against the Titans.

Titans new WLB/Orakpo worries me. He’ll be blitzing often against whatever dead meat we have at LT..YIKES…Mommy…!!!

3 Big fights break out between today at Titans TC.
    2 OL/DL, 1 WR/DB….no injuries

  37. twizzylax Says:

The defense is always ahead of the offense when the pads come on, so there shouldn’t be too much to worry about just yet. If we’re seeing the same results a couple of weeks from now, then sure.

@Mo Downs, we also don’t have any idea how much the Tenn coaches are asking of Mariota. We do know that Lovie and Koetter have said they’re putting a lot on Winston early to see what he can handle. Also, I believe our defense will be much better than Tenn’s this season, so Winston will have his work cut out for him in practices.

  38. Tampa Tony Says:

So Lovie blitzed Jameis a lot yesterday. Hopefully he uses this in the regular season to protect a 4th quarter lead for a change
