You’ve heard from many that “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston, is a footballaholic. A gym rat of pigskin proportions. Lives, eats, sleeps and breathes football.
Yes, Joe’s heard it too. Well, you can now believe it. Because an intelligent, honest-to-the-core football analyst is saying the same.
And that would be former Bucs tight end Anthony Becht. A college football analyst for BSPN and a member of the Buccaneers Radio Network, Becht is no mouthpiece. When he sees something wrong he’s not bashful, regardless of his employer. And currently, he doesn’t see much wrong with Jameis.
In fact, Becht went so far as to suggest that Jameis is but half of the two most important acquisitions the Bucs made this past offseason.
That’s what Becht explained while appearing on “Movin’ the Chains” last week, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio.
“Jameis is really what is advertised,” Becht said. “He’s a great leader. He is someone that is all in on football. He gets his nose in the playbook. And [offensive coordinator] Dirk Koetter is obviously the best signing after [Jameis] as far as a two-man combo to put this offense into gear and get [Jameis] on the same page come training camp.
“His football IQ is very high. Obviously he is coming in as a rookie. He is the No. 1 pick. Everyone is going to expect him to be the guy on Opening Day, which there is no question he will be. And he does have to improve on some areas.
“I mean, 18 interceptions, they just don’t go away from college [to first year in the NFL]. He has to improve on what he sees. A lot of his passes in college were through tight windows and [in the NFL] those windows get a little tighter. So he is going to have to improve on that and really get himself acclimated to the speed of the game. Sometimes in training camp, especially early on, that speed of the game is not quite there, even in preseason. He is going to have to gradually work through that.”
That is a very, very interesting comment Becht had there about Koetter being the second best pick-up. Joe cannot disagree. If Koetter has just some of the success with Jameis as he had advancing the career of Matty Ice, then Koetter will have earned every dime on his contract, and then some.
Remember, it was Koetter who somehow had a magic wand and turned David Garrard, of all people,, into a playoff quarterback. (Don’t get Joe started on Blaine Gabbert. Not even Jim Harbaugh could turn that stiff around.)

So we have exchanged McCowan with Winston (a significant upgrade) and also hired Koetter (an established NFL OC) to replace, well not really having one at all (sorry Arroyo). How could this not improve the entire offense. Now you gotta wonder what the entire team’s potential would be if Lovie/Licht decide to pursue Galette and land him.

P cola: I completely agree with you. Galette would be the missing link to our defensive front if he can keep himself out of trouble. It all starts at the dline, if they can get to the QB often it will force them to make frantic throws instantly making our DBs look like gods. Galette is the missing piece to our defense but will choir boy loving LOVIE bring someone who has domestic violence history to our team? WE CAN ONLY HOPE!!!!

Great observations by Anthony Becht, particularly about Dirk Koetter, our new OC, being the second best signing.
Excellent article over on PR (‘Bucs’ Gilkey Determined To Rebound From Miserable 2014’) certainly seems to support that. Garrett Gilkey was very open and honest about what the OLine faced last year in terms of challenges. Incredible! After reflecting on what I saw at the home games last year, I could definitely see what he was talking about.
I just have to believe that our OLine will be head-and-shoulders above where it was last year, even if we have a couple of rookies starting. Sounds like they’re working hard to develop the chemistry and communication that’s critical to both run and pass blocking.

I know I brought this up over the weekend, That Koetter seems like a great pickup. But there are just some nagging questions.
Why come work for Lovie who is a graveyard for OC’s?
Why was Koetter not allowed to chose his assistant coaches?? How often does that work out a coordinator that is told who all his stay is?

I think Koetter feels he can coach up this offense which has some serious talent. I believe he had already liked Glennon and feels he can work with him. Bucs have additionally drafted him a Heisman QB going #1 overall. The team was 2-14 last year and basically had no offense. I believe he feels he can showcase his own talents at Tampa Bay and will be seriously considered for a HC somewhere in the NFL very soon.

Captain Doom, Realists, Glass half empty folks, Pessimists, whatever you want to think of yourself as,this is the one time of the year that we are able to have hope and can say that we have not lost any games. Have your opinions, but man some people can really suck the excitement and joy right out of others. I know this franchise has been trash for a while now, but that has to eventually change, so why not that change begin this year? I for one am excited and am going to be positive. I will keep my expectations from being too ridiculously high and will remain patient while Jameis develops but I see clear skies on the horizon for our favorite Buccaneers! Go Bucs!!

Well of course he thinks he is going to coach up and showcase his system, Jeff Jagodzinski thought he was going to coach up and show off his system with the 2-2-1 running system!!!
I just find it very strange that he is not bringing in “his” guys! its not like the O-line jelled and was i tight group! did the running backs improve an any area?? Maybe I would have kept the WR coach, But only if VJ and ME gave very strong endorsements for him!!!

How often does an OC get the number one overall pick and have the chance to groom potential franchise QB.
If this offense really isn’t as bad as they looked last year and all we need is a real OC, then Koetter is going to look like a genius if he can just get this O to middle of the pack

Lovie is loyal (to a fault) to many of his coaches, almost always having their back. It’s how he attracts those coaches in the first place. I believe that Koetter smells success beside the keeping of these coaches. In fact, if he can succeed despite this fact, it would actually be yet another feather in his cap. If he doesn’t, people would note that he wasn’t able to bring in his own offensive staff….its a win-win.

So no one agrrees that we should go after junior galette? He alone has had more sacks in the last two years than any of our current defensive ends has throughout their careers. We need a edge rusher and what better way to stick it to Drew Brees and the saints then by having galette terrorizing the back field. We have to at least consider the opportunity that is at hand. Or maybe just see if Michael Strauss will come out of retirement. Whichever is easier. Lol

Reports indicate that he came to Tampa to be closer to his daughter who is a volleyball(?) coach at the University of Tampa. Considering he probably would have been replace by the new regime anyway that might be all the motivation he needed. Who really knows? Let’s not forget that ATL has 10 wins in the last 2 years. Lovie has had 1 good year in 10 as a head coach. The rest is just mediocre with a one and done playoff appearance. You do realize that Lovie basically switches OC’s each and every year… I believe the actually number is 8 or 9 oc’s in a 10 year career… The quickest way for an oc to kill his career is work for lovie. It also was very clear this off season that players DO NOT want to play for laughable lovie.

Junior Galete was said to be a locker room cancer. That is evident by the twitter rant he went on under his girlfriend’s account after he was release. Typing that the reason his offensive lineman couldn’t block anymore because a fellow teammate F*#$ his wife is definitely crossing the line. Accused fellow teammates of being gay etc. You have to weight that type of thing. What happens in locker room is supposed to be sacred and kept private and when a player betrays that trust, he is usually viewed as a player that you don’t want around. You guys need to google Galette and his tweets. I say stay away from this guy. That is just my opinion.

You do not want a toxic locker room. You had some teammates questioning his work ethic once he got his fat pay day (sounds familiar). He does not sound like a player you would want regardless of 10 sacks. We do not need a divisive presence at this point. Here is a thought, draft or develop a 10 sack guy without all of the cancer.

Lovie has had great defenses in the past. Im cool with his talent evaluation defensively. Read the tweets Galette made. This is not the type of guy I would want on my team. I was raised that snitches get stitches. Its a code amongst men and an NFL locker room that he definitely crossed. Airing dirty laundry for the world like a scorned little high school girl who was dumped by the Varsity Qb. That says a lot about who he is as a man. I can careless about 10 sacks.

I prefer to roll with those who have my back. Booger Macfarland on the radio has always said there were players who some thought were gay, but you never heard him say who. Thats because he understands the code which is important to players who line up in the trenches alongside of you. I am sorry you fans do not understand that. Majority of the players would rather play with a guy who has his teammate back and give his all and get only 7 sacks then someone who is lazy now that he has a new contract snitch who gets 10 sacks. I am sorry, but winning in the playoffs is a team accomplishment. What was the great bucs defense playoff record before gruden? Did that mean that the bucs defense was not great? You do not like Lovie and that is fine, but his woes in the playoffs was the same for the bucs in their heyday,……no offense. Its as simple as that.

I agree but when you have full control like Lovie had / has it’s his RESPONSIBILITY to ensure the entire team is competitive not just his defense.
Also let’s not forget the 3 best players on Lovies Chicago defense were there before he arrived and had 4 or 5 pro bowls between them before lovie coached a down.. It’s not about liking lovie I could careless about lovie it’s about winning.

Millionaires don’t spend millions on coaches who don’t have a record of success. Lovie, despite all the negative chatter, is a good coach and defensive specialist. His success is based on the success of 1) defense, 2) special teams and 3) offense. None of this should be is news, nor should future success be difficult to determine based on Lovie’s preferred strategic approach and the talent he has to work with.
The success of picking OC’s based on their resume’ should have yielded better results. It didn’t. The reasons for MOR success are there in plain sight and well documented if you care to look past the headlines and delve into the details. Lovie’s career W/L record is around +.500. So when you look at his professional history, there is a lot to like.
I hope that Koetter’s resume’ will yield better on-field results than the majority of OC’s that had similar or better records before joining Lovie’s staff. But, let’s not kid ourselves about the quality of talent on both sides of the ball. A .500 season would be a good start.

First off re THIS topic. Fameis is going to be fine. I’m wondering if when they get that video simulator (remember this is how astronauts and airline pilots do much of their training) in house if they can actually speed up the defenders?
That would be awesome. If Fameis got a daily dose of ultra fast defenders he’d become more judicious with his choices and the actual game would slow down for him.

OK recent history suggests that he’ll be able to get it whacked down to four!
He’ll miss 25% of our season. We play more than just N.O. I do not care to have a player with a personal vendetta. I want a player who plays HARD against EVERYBODY.
Galette has major issues. What would it say to the locker room to bring in a guy who has MULTIPLE incidents. If he was white I’d call him a thug. But I agree that is used to frequently on black players to have any meaning anymore other than a racist rant. And so I’ll simply call him a very, very, unsavory character.
I do not want to root for this kind of player!!! Tiny Tim is spot on when he talks about the locker room ramifications. We currently have an excellent locker room for the first time in recent memory…maybe since the SB team.

Yes Lovie won 11 games or more THREE different seasons…30% of his career.
Yes Lovie made it to the Super Bowl with freaking Rex Grossman.
But all of that was PURE LUCK and Lovie deserves ZERO credit for ANY of that.
OTOH he and he alone is TOTALLY responsible for last year’s 2-14 record.
Am I the only one here who senses an unfair attack lacking in logic?

Some people on here be going on like the Bucs are the Pittsburgh Steelers, a franchise that would have people beating the door down for a coaching job. I’m the biggest Buc fan, but in reality they still are the Bucs. No one wants to play here, no one wants to coach here. Schiano got the job, because Chip Kelly turned the job down at the last minute. Lovie Smith is not the most qualified head coach in the world, but he were the most qualified head coach that the Bucs could get. And why didn’t the Bucs sign any top free agents? no one want’s to play here. When the Bucs released Darrelle Revis, he acted like he had just hit the mega millions, that’s how bad he wanted out of Tampa. Buc fans should support the team and quit the hate. This isn’t about last season or the season before, this is all about the upcoming season. Every team has the same record,the Bucs are in great position to win games this season. And they will win this season, and improve every year.

There are 32 NFL teams…32 jobs. Obviously some would be considered better than others. The Bucs are nowhere near the bottom of that heap. All but very few men, Parcells, Cowher, SB winning coaches can afford to be that picky.
Nobody really knows why the Chip Kelly deal fell through. Perhaps the Glazers balked at giving him complete control as he now has in Philly. Maybe he felt(correctly IMHO) that he had ONE shot to have this much leverage and got more from the Eagles than he could from the Bucs. More $$$$?
Lovie Smith had more opportunties than the Bucs whether the haters here wish to believe it or not. Houston and Detroit were both prominent suitors.
Jeebus Buc fans I know life has been tough. But many of you act like battered wives. Lift your chins being a Buccanneer doesn’t suck. Playing on a 2-14 team sucks. Did Lynch, Brooks, Sapp, Dunn, Alstott whine about coming to Tampa because of the Bucs poor record. No they sacked up and turned the freaking record around.
I think we have some MEN on this team now. Guys who understand we lack winning tradition and have sucked for a decade. Guys who look forward to turning it around and it starts with Fameis!!! He didn’t come here to lose or be part of the losing tradition.

Sapp was never accused of beating women when he was a Buc.
Pittman was already a Buc and that was a domestic violence incident. I do not condone fighting physically with your wife but it’s nowhere near what Gallette has already done.
There were no locker room rumblings from teammates around Sapp although he reportedly had a locker room fight. Gallette has a PATTERN of moronic behavior.
I was embarrassed for this team to have Aquib Talib, Blount, Williams and the rest of the head cases that ended up here. Oh and how well did the team do when it was loaded with talented “bad guys”.
Belicheat seems to be able to control the morons. He doesn’t care if he hires a freaking murderer. New England should be ashamed of itself. They may have some SB’s but they also have a record of CHEATING, playing murderers, and yes guys who beat women.
You simply do not have to be a major ahole to be a good football player.

That is a straw man argument. The point isn’t that Galette was the WORST offender…we could start a list of nominations there…Lawrence Phillips should have NEVER played. Aaron Hernandez should be a TOTAL embarrassment to both Urban Meyers and Bill Belicheat.
Gallette is far from the worst offender. Talib was not the worst offender. Mike Williams was not the worst offender. NONE of them belong on the Bucs and neither does Gallette.

St. Pete- I agree with your Gillette take, good job. I do think a better example of players coming to the Bucs when it wasn’t popular to turn this def around would be Hardy. This team may not be in Tampa today if it wasn’t for him. I have much love for HN. Drafted players like Sapp and Brooks etc. didn’t have much choice initially .
The major problem with Gilette, other than character coming to play for the Bucs is he is a bad DE and not a 4-3 LB. He won’t fit in our system. He will want to play for a 3-4 team. I said this on here 3 days ago but people seem to want to debate the finer points forgetting the obvious.
