Five Team Officials Rank Marcus Mariota A Tier-2 Starter; Only One Picks Jameis Winston

July 22nd, 2015

lovie 1110bYes, important NFL people still think the Buccaneers whiffed on their quarterback choice with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft.

Fools!

ESPN.com writer Mike Sando penned the results of his annual secret chats with — and polling of — dozens of NFL personnel executives and coaches. The topic was starting quarterbacks, and Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback, ranked No. 27 in the league, one slot behind Marcus Mariota and two ahead of Josh McCown.

Speaking on WDAE-AM 620 this morning, Sando said five of the 35 NFL types he polled ranked Mariota as a 2nd-tier NFL starter right now. That’s a group that included the likes of Philip Rivers, Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, Tony Romo and others. (Where they stoned?)

One of those polled put Jameis in that category. (Jason Licht?)

Sando explained that 20 of 35 gave Mariota and Jameis the same bottom grading, a default score because neither has taken an NFL snap. Joe would have graded that way, too.

Joe can’t believe any sober mind would rank a 2015 rookie among the best QBs in the NFL in July.

It’s going to be a beautiful thing when this season of lists is over and real football begins next week.

So there are 20 ‘NFL’ people who are sane… plus Joe.

From the back seat, “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?”

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I guess Licht was stoned also…..nevertheless…..some of the lists are rediculous. The bottom line is that we are in better shape at QB…..

  3. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

This isn’t really news. Without anything real to go on, the rankings are fair. Whatever. We still have time to kill before the season. What are their shoe sizes? Girlfriend’s names? Favorite snack? Snooze….

  4. Hawk Says:

    @ Jack Burton Mercer
    Really? “Girlfriend’s names”?
Come on, everyone knows you can always tell what kind of player he is by the girlfriend’s PICTURE. :^)

I’m just happy this kid finally signed his deal. Got the titans to cave in and give him that off set language he was looking for. Fantastic,so looking forward to pounding that a$$ opening week. Another thing while we’re on QBs,many here make Luck out to be what I call the God of the QB position. But when your division is composed of the Jags,Titans and Texans I would expect you to be in the playoffs your first three seasons in the league.. And btw, since many here harp on turnovers Luck’s 40 td passes weren’t bad weren’t bad at all. But last season’s 22 ints weren’t all that impressive either. Just alil food for thought.

In a summer filled with stupid rankings, this has to be the dumbest of them all. So we are ranking QB’s who haven’t even been to their first training camp yet??? That’s like walking into class on the first day and the teacher giving you a grade that he thinks you will get based off of what you got at your previous school. There is no ranking! He’s not #1, nor is he #32. He gets a N/A next to his name. My goodness, can we at least wait until week 4 before we crown the guy or bury the guy!! Are we that impatient now in this world?! Damn I feel old after that rant!

  7. JMN Says:

Just another example as to why ESPN is a joke. Neither Mariotta or Winston have played a snap in the NFL. How can there be a comparison?

  8. LargoBuc Says:

Tennessee isnt exactly a quarterback factory. After Mcnair got cut, its been pretty bad. Its been really bad since Jeff Fisher left.
Consider that Whisenhunt has proven inept at developing young quarterbacks. His only success as a head coach was with Kurt Warner who had Boldin and Fitz to throw to, btw. So I have a hard time beleiving that Spread exclusive Mariota, whos a walking injury, will make them anything but mediocre. Theres no way we loose to those guys week one. And theres no way they pass Indy, Houston or even Jacksonville, a team I think will improve.
Basically, im glad we got Jameis due to his leadership intangibles and pro offense experience. Mariota can keep his superior athleticism. If you cant lead a huddle or read a defense in a second, you wont make it in todays NFL.

I agree with the ‘impatience’ part, but “week 4”? Maybe YEAR 4, but could be sooner. But with the level of ‘talent’ (players and coaching), on this team, I would not even call him savior or satan at week 16.
Of course that could change if he throws 40 TDs, one int(tipped ball), and the Bucs win the Super Bowl… OR he throws 40 ints, one TD(again, tipped ball) and the Bucs go 0-16. Neither scenario is very likely, so it is probably going to be a ‘rookie type’ season with a mediocre supporting cast.

There are guys currently in the NFL in senior positions that would put Marcus Mariota in the same class as Philip Rivers and Russel Wilson right now?!?! This has to be some kind of a joke

  11. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Absolutely no reason to lose to them week one.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Hawk,

I was being very sarcastic. That being said, you can bet with 100% certainty that there will be fans ready to jump off a bridge if we lose to Mariota in week 1. That’s to be expected. However, the sad part is there will be experts declaring him great and Winston a bust as well. It’s beyond ridiculous.

  13. Chris K Says:

No surprise here. It was noted all along that the football people preferred Mariota and it was the mockers who said Winston (mockers predict what a team will do) and of course Joe and the loudmouth’s. Winston and the Bucs better kick the Titans ass in week one, no if’s or but’s about it. If he’s the Masiah and America’s Qb like we’re being told to believe then there is no excuses in letting a so called injury prone so so Qb kick your ass twice in a year.

  14. Hawk Says:

Sorry, Hawaiian Buc, I am only 5′-10″. Sarcasm sometimes goes right over my head. :^)

  15. Skyline Crew Says:

Not sure how you guys can say with a straight face that there is no reason we should lose. Our secondary is awful and reports out of Titans camp is that Mariota is deadly accurate. Also, our oline is awful.

Also, where is the injury prone argument coming from? Winston was hurt all last season so that makes him injury prone then as well, right? I swear some of you make crap up and then wonder why you are let down come Monday. You think our team is F’n awesome when really we are at the bottom of the NFL. Until they do something I wouldn’t get your hopes up to high. Lovie is still the coach.

  16. Bucnut2 Says:

This article makes me ill., I wanted Marcus bit became a jw fan when we drafted him. I have a feeling an opening season loss is coming followed by 15 games of excuse making. Why do I have the feeling we drafted another number 5?

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Yes these rankings are absurd. For one thing football is still a team sport.

Are these rankings supposed to reflect how each would play if given exactly the same circumstances?

Peyton Manning would have sucked on our team last year because he is a statue like MG8. Yeah he would have completed some short quick routes but it’s hard for an immobile QB to succeed with NO OL. In fact for some of the less mobile QB’s on this last, and especially older ones, it might have been a challenge to simply finish the season without a horrible injury

  18. Buc1987 Says:

    From Bucs.com :

On Monday, EA Sports revealed ratings for several top rookies in this year’s Madden video game, including Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston. Winston earned an 81 overall rating with a 95 in throw power and 88 in short-range throw accuracy. He also received an 81 in agility, 75 in strength and 73 in speed.

  19. Buc Neckid Says:

The Bucs could lose to Mariota week one the same way the Bucs lost to Vick the first time they played him.
Nobody knew what to expect and Vick was so good at that read option that he just murdered that Great Buc Defense.
There is no film on Mariota or the Titans Offense with him in it yet
Plus the Bucs don’t have a QB that they play regularly (except maybe early in his career Newton) that has a higher chance of running rather than throwing.
This Buc Defense isn’t Great (yet) and Mariota isn’t Michael Vick
But Mariota still could put up some crazy stats (rushing) plus hand the Bucs a Loss on that first game.
    One Game
    Means Nothing
    but to Jameis Haters

  20. Chris K Says:

Wow Buc Neckid! Seriously? The excuses are now coming from everywhere and we haven’t played the game yet. No excuses period! Remember all the Mariota can’t huddle or command an offense? Remember the he can only make one read and run comments? Remember all the Jameis is the most pro ready Qb to come out since Luck comments? It was such a slam dunk on this site that Mariota didn’t even come close enough to mention in the same breath as Winston at the Nfl level, let alone the same field…. Na, na, na, I don’t wanna hear it! Week 1 must be a victory and a clear showcase of who the better Qb is.
