Baseball Strong Or Baseball Weak?

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, was a baseball standout at Florida State cranking out 95 miles-per-hour fastballs.
Did playing baseball help Jameis’ arm by limiting his football throwing when it wasn’t football season, or did it hurt his football arm, because he was wearing it out and not developing football strength?
The topic of rookie QBs coming down with a “dead arm” was discussed by Bucs beat writer Rick Stroud on WDAE-AM 620 recently.
Stroud and radio running mate Tom Jones, a noted Joe basher, noted Blake Bortles had a weak arm issue with the Jaguars last year, and Stroud referenced that Brad Johnson took practices off during his Bucs days.
So what about Jameis? The optimist in Joe says Jameis will unveil his strongest arm yet in 2015. The watchful spring care of the Bucs’ strength staff, and the normal physical progression of a young 21-year-old, should do the trick, right?
It’s a tough question. There are few, if any, guys with the physical history of Jameis, especially with that much juice on his fastball. Remember, there was a question about his shoulder at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Hopefully, the Bucs will be able to run the damn football for a change, which should make the endurance of Jameis’ 2015 arm a moot point.

Ceasing with the pitching can’t hurt him….hopefully it’s not only the arm strength but 52week concentration on football physically & mentally will also help.

He’s young and should not have any trouble throwing. Plus, the throwing motion of a football and a baseball are much different.

Wow it must be July and a couple of weeks from training camp. The story well is about to run out.
This is simply a non story. The number of NFL QB’s who were good enough players to be selected by MLB is long indeed. My first thought was just like WS99 Elway. But since we’ve decided to eliminate outfielders…a list that included Michael Vick, Jake Locker and Russell Wilson…how about Tom Brady a catcher…mostly lobs back to the pitcher but some throws to second? OK if we’re only talking pitchers…lets’ just toss out a few recent examples.
Colin Kaepernick, QB, 49ers (pitcher, Cubs, 43rd round, No. 1,310 overall, 2009)
Brandon Weeden, QB, Browns (pitcher, Yankees, 2nd round, No. 71 overall, 2002).
Matt Cassel, QB, Vikings (pitcher, Athletics, 36th round, No. 1087 overall, 2004).
Are these guys known for their “dead arms”?

The fact that Winston isn’t throwing baseballs will only help his mechanics and lessen the wear on his shoulder. I would only be worried if he was still pitching. The more time spent this offseason on football should make him better than we saw him at FSU.

People like to be controversial, and I think some in the media do even more so to draw attention to what they write. How can anyone with half a brain not think that Mariota is going to struggle more than Jameis, at least in the beginning?! Unless one of them is Dan Marino reincarnated, they are rookies and will have to learn to play in the NFL. Then, when you combine that with the fact Mariota is learning how to run a Pro offense, COME ON MAN! F-King STUPID.

Really? I totally do not understand why. Now if you give me some more detailed analysis that shows Fameis pitched way more innings than Kaepernik or Weeden or Cassell that would certainly be a factor.
I was under the impression that Fameis was a relief pitcher and not throwing that heat consistently but I could be mistaken.
I do agree with TBBF that giving up pitching is a positive. It enables Fameis to concentrate on football and he won’t be struggling with mechanics because of baseball but arm strength..meh.

But I would argue that taking the ball out of the hands of a phenom and placing it into the hands of a mediocre running back(s) behind an o-line that grades (?) on PFF is not the way to win. The chosen one, AQB, has a 95 MPH fastball with a 1.94 ERA. I hear a lot that throwing a baseball has nothing to do with throwing a football. That being drafted by a MLB team has nothing to do with success in the NFL? Hogwash. Every player I have heard that was drafted by a MLB team was successful in the NFL. It takes talent to play two sports. His provocative charismatic nature and his play for keeps divine righteous talent is electrifying for all to observe. His arm is fine.

Well…I could argue that he already has trouble throwing…and I would be right. Even he agreed at his pro day. His throwing needs a lot of work. His throwing speed needs a lot of work.
And, as he said at his pro day, he needs to learn to NOT stare down his target (which I pointed out for months but people just didn’t want to accept it. Heck, even after Winston admitted to it they don’t accept it!)
I would like to see him improve in the following areas this year:
– move fast, make faster decisions, but wise ones.
– get out of the habit of staring down WRs or operate in a no huddle, fast paced system so it doesn’t matter (Koetter does this style anyway)
– Improved footwork. He tends to trip over himself. Defensnse will thrive on this if he doesn’t get it under control.
– Ball placement. Regardless of the so-called “experts” doing youtube promotional reviews for Winston, he doesn’t have good ball placement on the sidelines. He throws behind and inside…which is the prime interception zone. Defenders in the NFL will feed of that! He needs to place the ball slightly ahead and to the outside shoulder, where it cannot be picked off.
If he can show growth in those areas and stay out of trouble, I will totally buy in.
Still won’t buy jerseys though. But not because of him. I just hate the new jerseys.

I’ll say this though…he won’t have a chance behind the offensive line as it is right now. They are going to have to run the ball a LOT, and the offensive line is going to have to learn to run block before it can pass block well enough.
Defenses are going to blitz Winston like any other rookie to see if it flusters him. With a good offensive line, it wouldn’t matter, but we don’t have that.
EVEN IF the two rookies turn out to be great, it’s going to take time. It won’t come in an instant.
So fast passes and a lot of running and Winston will have a great year.

I can’t believe JOE and Tom Jones don’t get along. They have so much in common. Especially since they both have solid positions in the absolute lowest tier of Tampa Bay area sports writing. Especially funny to find in JOE’s 2010 comments that JOE feels Jones provides “spin-filled” writing in his efforts. Glaring example of the pot calling the kettle black.
