“Siege” Alert
July 20th, 2015Joe confesses to purchasing a living dinosaur on Sunday, that would be a traditional newspaper called The Tampa Tribune.
It was extremely enjoyable reading, except the sports section was downright puzzling.
First, in those eight pages of sports reading was not one paragraph about the most popular team in town, the Buccaneers. (And local newspaper leaders wonder why they’re struggling.)
Second, there was a full-page advertisement with bold letters stating, “The Siege Is Coming.” And there were a couple of inspirational sentences under that referencing how “a new day is upon us” and people are about to unite for something. Then it tells readers to visit JoinTheSiege.com.
Ok, Joe figured it was some sort of bizarre Buccaneers print ad that failed to include the men who will excite fans and put butts in the seats, Mike Evans and “America’s Quarterback,” Jameis Winston.
This afternoon, Joe was cruising U.S. Highway 19 in Palm Harbor and saw a similar “Siege” digital billboard with a running countdown clock pegged at 55 days and a few hours.
Yes, this is a comprehensive Buccaneers advertising campaign. No Jameis, just a lot of talk about “The Siege.”
Frankly, Joe doesn’t get it. Sure, it’s mildly catchy and may arouse very casual fans, but it has left Joe shaking his head.
Not hammering to the public the fact that America’s Quarterback is in Tampa feels almost as ludicrous as having Josh McCown start at quarterback after an 0-3 start and a significant injury.
But that insanity landed Jameis, so perhaps this ad campaign will deliver historic results, too.

Just a matter of time before the Related Companies tear down Tribune headquarters to build condos and retail.
Also found out the Tribune charges huge for obituaries, the Tampa Bay Times does not charge at all.
Shame on the Tribune.
As far as Bucs coverage, we don’t need no stinkin Tribune as long as we have JBF.
July 20th, 2015 at 4:06 pm
I think it is going to be the ” Fire Lovie Mob ” !!!! All the angry fans rushing 1 Buc and laying it under siege!!
July 20th, 2015 at 4:07 pm
After he wins his NFL debut something tells me a lot of that will change. One win book it and he’s the King the Bay. Watch.
July 20th, 2015 at 4:10 pm
Remember the “Seen Stamkos?” advertising the bolts employed when they drafted 91?
Brilliant marketing focused on a future superstar.
But, I actually like this “siege” idea….the “mystery” behind it makes it a little intriguing
And on the bright side….just 4 more years until the Bucs are allowed to change their uniforms again!
July 20th, 2015 at 4:17 pm
JOE is easily puzzled. No Surprise.
July 20th, 2015 at 4:34 pm
Marketing campaigns like that usually have several phases. Maybe this is just the first one. But yes, if the campaign doesn’t evolve then it doesn’t make any sense.
July 20th, 2015 at 4:42 pm
All I see is smoke, is the countdown to Sept 14 at 4:05pm? Either that or Tampa is legalizing weed which should make some of yuz real happy!!!
July 20th, 2015 at 4:57 pm
Hopefully its tampa leg@lizing pot. Fans wont be so angry after lovie takes control of the offense in the 4th quarter, runs it up the middle for three posessions and gives away the lead. May be a good idea until they promote kietter
July 20th, 2015 at 5:03 pm
Join the siege? Just what exactly are we sieging?
SIEGE
A military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.
A prolonged period of misfortune.
It is kind of appropriate when the Buccaneers are requesting fans to join in a prolonged period of misfortune?
July 20th, 2015 at 5:07 pm
What do you say? We drafted a quarterback with our overall 1st pick this year in the draft? I’m not sure how I missed that one, Joe.
July 20th, 2015 at 5:25 pm
The only thing good about the Times is the sports page. Other than that it’s just another liberal rag like the NY Times. I made my wife switch to the Tribune because it’s not only cheaper than the Times, but it’s not nearly as slanted one way. I don’t read either one though. The newspaper is always about news you heard on TV or the internet the day before. I try to tell my wife this, but I always get the same old story “I like it for the crossword puzzles”. What a rip off, those are some expensive crossword puzzles. Doesn’t stop her from reading me stuff out of the paper though, then I quickly cut her off and say yes honey I already heard about that on JBF yesterday…

Comment of the day!!!

Fire Lovie mob, must be another Lovie Smith cause the one currently head coach of my team will be holding that position for atleast ten years. Who you referencing Realist!!! ?
July 20th, 2015 at 6:01 pm
I’m confused. Nowhere do I see anything about the Buccaneers. What kind of advertising is it when you don’t even mention the name of what you are trying to sell? Perhaps the Bucs need to find a new group of people to help them market themselves, because this is beyond pathetic.
July 20th, 2015 at 6:18 pm
I don’t read that pile of crap Tribune either, barely read the Times. If I want it I just pull it out of the recycle dumpster here. Pay for it, never. I get scads of Sunday money off food coupons that way, so I guess that’s all they are good for. Yeah, I’m a garbage picker.
July 20th, 2015 at 6:39 pm
This is less a football story than a broken media story. An elaborate illustration of why hard copy newspaper readership is shrinking and papers reduced to annoying consecutive full page ads for cars, mattresses and hearing aids. The T Trib clearly closes out the question, “who needs it?”.

siege
sēj/
noun
A military operation in which enemy forces surround a town or building, cutting off essential supplies, with the aim of compelling the surrender of those inside.
An operation in which a police or other force surround a building and cut off supplies, with the aim of forcing an armed person to surrender.
A prolonged period of misfortune.
I love the third usage for the word seige……it is particularly suited to the Bucs lately……
July 20th, 2015 at 6:46 pm
Can’t be worse than the “Defend the Bay” that resulted in 8 home losses last year.
July 20th, 2015 at 6:50 pm
Funny that the electronic digits counting down the siege don’t look anything like the digits on our uniforms.
July 20th, 2015 at 7:14 pm
TBBF…tampa2bucsforever already beat you too it.
July 20th, 2015 at 8:52 pm
It could be that the Trib, unlike less intellegent media sources recognizes that the majority of Bucs fans still aren’t sold on the selection of the so called “America’s QB” and know they have to promote the team as a whole.
July 20th, 2015 at 8:55 pm
Newspapers are not in business to “promote.” That’s why the Bucs have a marketing department. That’s why Buccaneers.com plays up Robert Herron like he’s Lynn Swann.
Would like to see your study that shows “majority” of Bucs fans didn’t want Winston.
July 20th, 2015 at 8:56 pm
I saw this billboard up around the stadium about a week ago.

“Since we’re actually going to draft Mariota, these Winston article’s are pretty silly, but I’ll entertain the idea til Thursday….”
Where’s my damn jersey Erik?
July 20th, 2015 at 10:04 pm
The Bucs are the most popular team in town? attendance would suggest otherwise
July 20th, 2015 at 11:06 pm
@ Joe
Your Alzheimers or Dimensia must be rearing it’s ugly head again. You yourself acknowledged before the draft that the majority of real fan polls showed the majority of fans did not want the Bucs to draft Winston.
Also, it is not uncommon for newspapers, TV stations, radio stations or other media outlets and sports teams to joint venture on different kinds of promotions.
July 20th, 2015 at 11:25 pm
I will personally open a PayPal account for donations to 87’s JW Creamsickle jersey. I am donating the first $20. Anyone else stepping up?
July 20th, 2015 at 11:41 pm
Joint venture from a paper’s marketing wing. Reporters are not in the biz of promotion and do not work in the marketing/advertising wing. Joe has never, ever worked at any paper (including the Tribune) where he was told by someone other than an editor what to write. And no, editors don’t work in the marketing/advertising wing, either.
Guess Joe has Alzheimers. What exactly is a “real fan poll,” as opposed to, say, a fake fan poll?
Joe’s traffic data, and seeing the tens of thousands at the Den of Depression draft night going wild, and hearing other local media sites also big time spiked with traffic since the draft, Joe never realized Kwon Alexander was so popular.

lol@Buc
July 20th, 2015 at 11:51 pm
BTW I’ve already started attacking Erik’s facebook page…I plan on doing a little bit more though. Nothing I can post in here though. Top secret. Let’s just say he might just send that jersey after all, just to get me to let up on him.
July 20th, 2015 at 11:52 pm
Joe…stick a fork in him. He’s done.
July 20th, 2015 at 11:55 pm
I suppose “siege” is more politically correct than pillage (which is actually pirate related). Siege refers to attacks on strongholds.
So does this mean Raymond James will come under siege?
I think it’s poor advertising myself.
Now, if they ran the ad in the towns of our division rivals…THAT would be smooth indeed…and bold.
July 20th, 2015 at 11:58 pm
Im not kidding 87. I think you deserve a Jersey and am willing to donate 20 bones to the effort if others are willing to donate too.
July 20th, 2015 at 11:59 pm
Good point Bonzai

Hawaiian Buc Says:

You raise a valid point. Advertising doesn’t work unless it makes EVERYONE know the product.
It is possible the goal is to build mystery before revealing the product, but then the countdown kind of gives it away.
Unless, of course, a Knights of Camelot Restaurant is opening in town with live jousting on the same day. 😉
July 21st, 2015 at 12:00 am
87 we could just all bombarde his site one day and demand that the owner man up and honor his bet.
July 21st, 2015 at 12:01 am
If it is during work hours I could come home at lunch and hiet my other sites and get 30 or so others to do the same. 🙂
July 21st, 2015 at 12:13 am
Buc…yeah something along those lines. But I have better stuff planned as well. Stuff I could tell you over the phone and not on the internet though. There’s more than 1 or 2 or 3 ways to skin a cat.
July 21st, 2015 at 12:19 am
Rookies react to their Madden 2016 ratings…. Jameis is I think an 82 or 84.

Please don’t insult the intellegence of your readers. We all have memories and good sense Even 1987

Wait so are the bucs the siegers, or the siegeees?
