“A Big Feel Out”
July 18th, 2015Back when Joe hung out with Herm Edwards at the NFL Owners Meetings in Arizona this year, the excitable former Bucs assistant head coach got all Tony Dungy when talking about Tampa Bay’s 2014 defense.
Herm got all mellow and relaxed, sort of falling into a Dungy-Lovie style of communication. Herm told Joe all about how the Bucs simply were experiencing an ugly and inevitable learning curve for coaches and players in Lovie Smith’s old school Tampa-2.
All those free agents the Bucs signed this spring, Edwards said, there was no coincidence that every last one either played for Lovie or had experience in this defense. (Keep in mind Herm had just had dinner with Lovie the previous night.)
No worries at all, Herm said. Lovie just needed to go through that teaching and weeding process, and fill holes.
Fast forward to this week, and Alterraun Verner chatted with 120sports.com, part of the Sports Illustrated family of sites.
Verner echoed Edwards’ calm and boldly stated the Bucs’ defense will be much better out of the gate than anything seen last year.
“I think it was just a big feel out,” Verner said of Lovie’s approach and takeaway from last season, “just to see what people were able to do and how he was able to use people in certain situations, according to his defense and personnel.”
Interestingly, Verner downplayed the Bucs’ defensive improvement in the second-half of last season, which sort of flies in the face of what Leslie Frazier and Bucs officials keep saying.
But Verner said the Bucs should be “a much, much tougher defense to start” the 2015 season. He says learning from the Bucs’ own 2014 film, versus studying tape of other teams’ defenses and talking in hypotheticals, will make an immense difference.
As for Verner’s play last year, he went on to say that learning a new defense on the run after being slowed by preseason injuries, and playing tough teams early in the schedule, was a toxic combination.
July 18th, 2015 at 9:52 am
It should be the toughest, passive defense in the NFC south. I can’t wait to hear more excuses!! Its like a bottomless well and the Lovie Sheep just eat it up.
year 7 and the rebuild continues!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 9:55 am
Coming from a guy that predicted superbowl last year for Lovie’s lovable losers? Oh, and isn’t he best buds with Lovie too? I don’t know why we have to keep hearing from Herm BS Edwards.
Consider the source.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:04 am
Hey what’s a Saturday morning without a ton of cold water thrown on us.
Welcome to our Debbie Downers this morning.
This is not year 7 of the rebuild!!! Can you say ManU? The Glazers took a few year hiatus from the Bucs to make themselves billionaires with a purchase on credit. They had NO money for a Bucs “rebuild”.
This is year TWO of the rebuild and you guys are certainly right that year one was an abysmal failure in every area…talent…attitude and yes horrible coaching.
We’ll see what happens this year. Again injuries will be a wild card for every NFL team. If we don’t get destroyed by injuries we’ll be fine.
My greatest fear is what will you guys be able to write about next year if my ten win prediction comes true!
July 18th, 2015 at 10:07 am
“I think it was just a big feel out,”
************
This just goes to show how stupid I am. I always thought that’s what game tapes, camp and the preseason was for, to feel out who can play. Man, thank god we have Lovie to show us the way or else we’d be one of the worst if not the worst team in the league.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:30 am
Man some of you guys are negative! If they suck we have all season to complain why not be positive now. I am not sure they could have done more than what they did. They got an experienced o coordinator, a potential franchise qb, two o lineman to try to shore up that weakness, and a bunch of players with experience in our defense. They also had continuity on the defensive coaching staff white weeding out the players who did not fit this scheme. Throw in the fact that last year without all those above listed additions/changes they were in most every game till the end. How can a true fan of a team not be excited? Jameis alone weeks be awesome but you throw in the rest and man exciting stuff.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:33 am
I look forward to the season starting at which time those first two posters will be force to STFU. But go ahead continue hating cause you got beef with the HC(A head coach that will be around a very long time I might add)your days being able to do so are numbered. And just know I’ll be reminding you two for years to come.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:37 am
Welp that was part of my assessment of last season as it winded down. It was like a tryout for different positions. Lay down the seeds watch them grow and then pull the weeds out at the end of the season. That along with the tank job theory I have. Last season was a practice run.
It’s either 3 things. I’m in denial. L&L don’t know wtf they are doing. Or last season was a tank and tryout session. 🙂
July 18th, 2015 at 10:38 am
Also lets just change coaches every two years that works signed The Bucs Realist and DallasBuc.

July 18th, 2015 at 10:40 am
Talk is cheap, it takes money to buy whiskey.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:40 am
Nole..there you go again sounding like me in 2013 verbatim. Told fans I would remind them of how wrong they were once the season started. I also questioned whether they were fans at all…
True story!
July 18th, 2015 at 10:42 am
Lol,I hear you ndog. It’s like some folks round here tickle me. You telling me you haven’t noticed not one thing that give you optimism. If your answer is no then you’re not a true fan.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:44 am
I’ll never forget the chick at Race Trac seeing me with my Brooks jersey on in the middle of the season and saying to me. “Oh you’re a Bucs fan, they’re not doing so hot this year are they.” My response : “That’s okay I think their losing on purpose at this point.”
July 18th, 2015 at 10:44 am
Look 87 all I know is English and I’ma say it to you again my friend. WINSton wasn’t leading that team.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:48 am
I can find plenty of optimism at certain spots, plenty of concern in other spots, and question marks in others.
July 18th, 2015 at 10:52 am
I mean I would understand you doubters if all last season we were just being ran off the field Sunday after Sunday. How many games did we lead going into fourth quarter? A number of them, with no OC and garbage QB all while leaning a defensive scheme. Really. A ghost at right deceive end,mlb that didn’t fit and safety playing in an era that no longer suits his hard hitting game. How can you folks not see we were losing on purpose. I’ll tell you how you’ll see,it’s called opening week of the 2015 season. It’ll tell you everything you need to know about last season.

How can you folks not see we were losing on purpose.
Honestly wish you guys would stop with this losing on purpose/tanking BS. We lost bc of terrible execution and poor decisions. No accountability whatsoever. Oh we meant to lose 14 games on purpose. GTFOH STFU with that BS!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 11:07 am
Optimism for me : Jameis to Evans and Vjax. Donavan Smith and Marpet. Jaquez Smith in a full season. Banks and Verner second year in the system. GMC having a REAL coming out party for all 4 quarters.
Concerns for me : O-line, Lovie getting blown out twice last season, running backs, MLB and safety. Jameis getting killed behind that o-line.
Question marks for me : did they really tank a few games last season other than the last one? Koetter is better than Arroyo, but that’s not saying much. A rookie QB learning on the fly. Did the other teams in our division get better and by how much?
July 18th, 2015 at 11:11 am
“Oh we meant to lose 14 games on purpose.”
99 I’m not saying all 14 games. I’m saying at some point in the season it became fruitless to even try to win games. Could have been week 7, could have been week 10. Could have been poor play calling ….on purpose. No the players were trying, but perhaps the coaches were not. It is possible.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:14 am
Even though it’s only pre-season games. I think they will tell us a lot.
I went to both pre-season games in 2013 and you could just tell it was going to be a horrible regular season.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:16 am
WS99 eat a fat d@$! If you don’t like my opinion. The Colts did the same Luck, the Spurs did the same for Duncan. You folks live in this world of black and white but you lack the vision to notice the many outer shades of grey.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:17 am
StPeteBucsFan,
A lot of these guys arent here because they care about the Bucs. They post here-because they can trash talk important, sucessful, wealthy people with anonimity. It makes them feel better about their own failed, miserable lives.
This team was destroyed over many years. John Gruden won us a Superbowl. But he couldnt draft, or develop young players. Look at how many ProBowl players were on this team when he arrived, then how many were on the team when he left. 0. The man keep bringing in old retreads- who I loved-but werent the way to build a team.
Dominick was Too young and clueless- also left the Cupboards bare.
Lovie and Licht are doing it the right way. Im glad to see it. And real Buc fans can see it headed the right way too.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:25 am
This season is about Winston’s development. If he can show us that’s he’s the real deal by the end of the season then I’m not worried about how many wins we have in 2015. Playoff run 2016 and beyond!
July 18th, 2015 at 11:26 am
If we can somehow make the playoffs this season it would be a bonus!
July 18th, 2015 at 11:28 am

July 18th, 2015 at 11:32 am
87 I only post negative when someone brings they’re aggression to me.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:35 am
The Bucs lost 13 of their 16 games last year because they simply weren’t as good as their opponents. The two games they won they probably shouldn’t have won. At least two of the games they lost they probably should’ve won.
Folks can find 100 reasons why they stunk up the place, but one fact remains: they lost 14 games. Season over, case closed, time to move on.
L&L made some significant improvements, most important I think being the addition of Dirk Koetter as OC. I think he’ll bring the rookies along fast, but they’re still rookies, and are going to make rookie mistakes.
What I’m looking for in 2015 is to see the Bucs play some good, solid, hard-nosed football for a change. Building a championship-caliber team will take time, but this year will set the foundation I’m convinced.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:36 am
I love this site because at the end of the year some of us will be correct and some will be proved wrong.
We all get to post our opinions and the good posters, most here, back up there opinions with some factual observations.
I wish we could all toss $10 into a pool. The day before the season starts we make our predictions. 50% of the pool would be divided among those who nailed it. The other 50% would be divided between those who were just one game off…whether a win or loss. IE Joe has been talking about six wins. If that happens it’s a winner…5 or 6 would take the second place poll.
As it is at least we’ll have bragging rights or the right to be shamed. LOL
July 18th, 2015 at 11:37 am
Some of us are positive over some things, for example with Lovie
1.) High draft picks!
2.) last place = easy schedule next year!!
3.) The toughest, passive defense in the NFC south!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 11:38 am
I’m sometimes guilty of throwing out negative comments, but hey that does’nt diminish my everlasting Buc optimism. People get cranky, get used to it. A winning team will clear out most of the pessimism. Who would be here if not a Buc fan?
July 18th, 2015 at 11:42 am
OT note: There are some here who love to critique grammar and spelling.
I am not one of those people. In addition there was a time when my brain was younger that I spelled much better.
The major problem with spelling I now encounter are the homonyms.
to..too…two…there..they’re…their….
I’ll be honest and say if I proofread closely enough I’ll catch those errors…but this is for fun not my job. If I was on Joe’s side of the screen I’d proof far more carefully.
July 18th, 2015 at 11:47 am
I’d love to be wrong about Lovie and see the Bucs at least resemble a good team this year.
But I’m still bitter about 2-14, what seasoned NFL head coach that is considered good goes 2-14? Even bad teams find ways to win 4-5 games. As a paying season ticket holder my optimism is done until Loser Lovie wins a game and proves me wrong.
Not gonna tell anyone they are wrong, I’m just over being hopeful when all this team does is let me down

This is not year 7 of the rebuild!!! Can you say ManU? The Glazers took a few year hiatus from the Bucs to make themselves billionaires with a purchase on credit. They had NO money for a Bucs “rebuild”.
______________________________________________
That’s OK with you?
They made all of the money they used to buy ManU from the Bucs.
They have a deal where they keep all of the money generated from
the team, and the community (you and I) pay for the stadium upkeep.
To return the favor they completely ignore the Bucs and let them languish
in the wind for years while they build their fortune using the money
generated by the sweetheart deal Malcolm orchestrated.
To me that says,”Hey. We took your money and now **** you.”
I guess it is what it is. Tampa and Florida have been a hunting ground
for sharks for decades, That’s why the mob loved this place in the 80’s,
they could really take advantage of the generally uneducated populace.
They could buy cops and live like kings.
At least Malcolm gave us a winning team in return. The soccer brats
have given us nothing but grief. Most people who used to be ticket
buyers in the 90’s and early 2000’s feel exactly like I do, they just don’t
give a crap anymore. The Bucs are a Jacksonville Jaguar style joke to them
and they don’t care. They’ve moved on.
The nice thing for owners in this day and age is that you really don’t need
a local fanbase. Television makes up the vast vast majority of the profit.
Judging by their ruthlessness I would not be surprised at all if their
end game is to eventually move the team. They just need to find another
community that is bigger chumps than we are which will be hard to do.
That said, I’m still a fan of the team, because they are Tampas team.
They’re just suffering from Shahid Khan type ownership

Standing applause to you Sir!!!!!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 12:10 pm
@Howard Cosell
NO! I’m not ok with it and I agree completely with your post. The Glazers have totally scrwd this community but we all have to have our NFL fix and they make the rules.
The fact that WE built billionaires a stadium so that they could pay athletes millions has always rankled me in ALL sports. It’s the worst form of corporate welfare and all the economic studies show that the sports teams do not return money to the community for these huge investments.
The Glazers deal is particularly onerous. When the USF Bulls play at RayJay they do not get the parking it goes to the Glazers. Why? We OWN that stadium.
At least I was on the steering committee for POWW which kept robber baron Stu Sternberg from totally hosing St. Petersburg. The Ray”s management lied, distorted and did everything to cheat St. Pete taxpayers. I can be more specific if anybody wishes.
But baseball fans and the ENTIRE sports media keep singing the same song that we MUST have baseball and we’re losing the Rays to Montreal, Charlotte, Las Vegas, Hartford…pick the blackmail city of your choice. It’s one of America’s worst forms of welfare fraud.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:12 pm
What happened last year was that losing is contagious. Both of there wins were wins they should have won. The Bucs blew the doors off the Skins and they played with the Steelers the whole game. The end was when Lovie decided to bench MG8 and give the wheel to the Clown. Overthrow, underthrow, INT, INT and INT. To show what a competent QB can do, in the win vs the Skins McClown was 15 for 23 for 188 YDS, 0 INT for a QB rating of 137.5. The defense did improve significantly after the bye week for points allowed. The additions of Melton, Carter, Moore, Johnson and Conte can only improve this defense. All have Tampa2 experience except for Johnson. Johnson, Melton and Moore are all high ranking players by Pro Football Focus. Kwon Alexander is going to contribute this year as well. If Verner can return to his 2013 form where he was rated 4th best CB in the NFL by PFF this defense is going to be very, very good. Just ask the Steelers or the Redskins or the Packers or just about any team we played last year, just how good this defense can be. The difference this year is Winston’s ability to win. Winning is contagious.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:24 pm
I say *** it.
Let the Rays and Bucs move.
Then we invest in education and build the local community.
Big sports are entertaining but the price has become too high.
Like you said, it has become the business model of choice for “robber-barons”.
I’ve been listening to “Think and Grow Rich” on youtube, and the mentality
of these billionaires is really sick. They are truly cancers on mankind.
They harm large numbers of people and they do it with a huge iron-clad sense of entitlement.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:37 pm
Not you 87, you’re a reasonable man but nosbos is killing me. He’s taken on the role of comment police with some weak arguments. It’s exactly what you be talking about, fans spend the offseason blowing smoke up their own arse then have to eat crow all season long. It’s one of the main reasons I “can’t” go back to BN. Some of those mf are so fckn stupid it’s maddening especially your boy SP. Fckn idiot is what he is, he should stick to soccer.
Lovie fckd up in so many ways it’s no surprise were 2-14. Here’s a small example WHO THE FCK kicks the ball to Devon Hester? Who kicks it to him a third time after he’s returned 2 fckn kicks. How fckn stupid can you be? It’s not like he didn’t play for you for years, it’s not like you don’t know what he’s capable of. Better question is why the FCK did you not sign Hester?
July 18th, 2015 at 12:38 pm
Howard if the Bucs move. I might move with them to their new city. Unless it’s California. I won’t be able to cope with all the socialism that takes place out there.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:41 pm
99 ..lol on the Hester thingy. I mean Lovie loves his old players so much yet didn’t want to bring the really good one? Baffling.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:45 pm
And yes the Bucs have been rebuilding since they fired Gruden. So year 7 of the rebuild continues…
July 18th, 2015 at 12:50 pm
Lets just hope and see when we start winning, all these Bucs fan changing their tone. “I knew this would be the year”. “I was fully on support when they drafted Winston”. “I really like lovie and his defense, I knew this guy would bring us back to the playoffs”.
July 18th, 2015 at 12:51 pm
If Lovie goes 5-11 he will be a career .500 coach!!
If Lovie goes 4-11 he will be known as Coach Loser Smith!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 12:58 pm
If RG3 could lead his team to the playoffs his first year why not Jameis? I’m a Bucs fan so I’d love to be wrong about Lovie but he’s shown me nothing to make me think I’m wrong

Wise call 87! I too come here to escape the everyday world. I go to another political blog to debate politics. We rarely talk sports there and politics doesn’t really fit on a sports blog.

I could give you bunch more but I’ll stick with this one, why would all the owners come together in 1964 and decide the best place for Joe Nammoth to go was New York? I’m curious, you see we’ve entered this age of Aquarius a lot of things are coming to light. Just check the episode of”A football life of Joe Nammoth on NFL network it’ll show you what I’m talking about. Everything isn’t always what it seems to be.

July 18th, 2015 at 2:13 pm
Nole on Sat
No doubt the AFL wanted Joe Willie in New York and were going to make that happen so as to better expose their star player and force the NFL to the merger table.
The WHL did the same thing by luring Gordy Howe and his sons to Houston to get that league enough cred to force a merger.
No doubt that money drives the sports cart even though we don’t like that side of it.
July 18th, 2015 at 2:17 pm
Ok but how does that apply to the bucs or mr smith?
July 18th, 2015 at 2:20 pm
The Patriots cb Malcolm Butler stated and I quote: we practiced against that play all week,I dropped the pass on one occasion and coach Belichek jumped down my throat. End quote. Now is it me,or did they know expect the d@$! play to be coming? I’m curious. I mean after the Panthers scored in they’re superbowl appearance against the Pats they come back on the ensuing kick off and kick the ball straight out of bounds. Giving Brady and company a short field to operate with thusly resulting in a game winning field goal. Really. Look,I don’t wanna steal Christmas from some of you. But if you’re a grown man and you don’t notice fishy stuff with these sports sometimes then well I’ll leave you to your own personal thoughts and opinions. As for me on the other hand it ain’t hard to tell.

St.pete you a beast. 99 the point I’m trying to make is last season was’nt as bad as it appeared on the surface. Some don’t have to like Lovie as coach which is kinda ironic cause players love the man. I’m just saying he atleast deserve another season before we call for his head. My belief all last season was a job that to me that would explain some of the poor decision making you mention earlier. If I’m wrong bro trust me I’ll be here all next season for you to throw it in my face and I’ll take like a man. I just happen to think with the talent on this squad we about to make real noise man.

You would probably like it. Howard Cosell… Tampa has been a hot spot for organized crime since way back, remember Santo Trafficante, the mafia kingpin based in Tampa.

That’s unfair what you say about Lynch 99 dude does a lot for the community of Oakland bro.

87, I saw your post last night about your hernia. I had a double hernia operation when I was like 3 or so, and another one about 7 years ago. Sometimes the surgery doesn’t take away all of the pain. About 8 months after my surgery I thought I still had a hernia cause it still hurt. I went back to the doctor and he said the pain was from the excess scar tissue from the multiple surgeries. I hope you have better luck than I have. Feel better fellow Buc fan!!

Of course he does. He’s a great guy even in buffalo he’s was cool with the community. He is still thugged out though lol he a BOSS!!!

This defense will not be passive, this defense will be aggressive. We have a lot of new faces on the defense, we got rid of a lot of dead weight.I believe the position where we will see the most improvement is safety, DJ Swearinger should start at strong safety and Bradley McDougald at free safety. We added 3 good linebackers, Bruce Carter,Khaseem Greene, Kwon Alexander. We should improve at CB, with Sterling Moore, Mike Jenkins, Brandon Dixon. We should improve on the D-Line with Henry Melton in the mix at DT, George Johnson at DE and after a full offseason with J. Smith at DE. I can see good things from our defense this season.

Buccfan37…I think the site is pretty easy and flows right along. Lots of dems and repubs arguing back and forth, which is what I like. I don’t want it to be all one sided or it’s no fun. I was only on the site for about a week and I got like 57 followers. Since I never twitter I don’t know wth a follower is, but I’m learning.

Just remember that everything you say can and will be used against in a court of law or of public opinion.

BuccaneEric75 …this hernia is the one where part of your intestine falls into a hole in your abdomen. Stuff gets stuck in there pretty much blocking anything. My stomach blows like a balloon and feels like it’s going to burst. Yeah it’s no fun, not at all.

99…lol I’ve already been threatened with that numerous times. One dude even told me he’s calling the secret service on me.
July 18th, 2015 at 3:08 pm
He doesn’t need to call if you know what I mean, they already read it. Big brother is watching. That’s why JBF is great. Big bro dgaf about about the bucs. Highly unlikely.

Yea 87, that’s the same ones I had. It freaked me out! The doctor told me weeks before the surgery that it would be two small incisions on each side. When I woke up and looked each one was like 4 inches long! That was the only time I’ve ever looked at something and got nauseated!

Here you go boys something I’m sure we can ALL get behind. A goal that is both positive and productive.
– 2. HC Lovie Smith – 90 career victories
Smith enters the 2015 season with 83 head coaching wins in his career, No. 50 on the NFL’s all-time list. Seven more would propel him to the 90-win mark and move him up to No. 44. Smith averages 8.3 wins per season, the second-most of any active head coach. – Buc com

I’d be thrilled with 8 wins this season!! Playoff run next season! I hope we pull a Colts, but I don’t see it yet.
July 18th, 2015 at 3:31 pm
I can see 6-8 wins, but I really do need to watch some pre-season games first…
July 18th, 2015 at 4:03 pm
Ditto on pre-season. It’s almost here!!!
July 18th, 2015 at 4:27 pm
That is something we all can be positive about 99. BuccaneEric75 you might be surprised.

I’m just looking at our division man. The team that won it last the starter QB was 5-8 and1 last season. The south wide open and ready for the taking.

That’s a nice tid bit of information 99. With his shiny new weapon under center I think he’ll not only reach that average but exceed it most season’s. This kid just not wit that losing chit man. Y’all will soon see the competitive fire the passion of this young man. It rubs off on other people bro. I’m tellin y’all.

Secret Service. A guy on our blog demanded to know my address in St. Pete so he could come down from Ohio and “settle it like men”. LOL
What an idiot. He doesn’t understand Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. We don’t need much to be able to blow somebody away without any real repercussions. I had this dude’s comments on a blog and if he showed up he was clearly threatening me. He doesn’t know me from Adam. I’m not a violent person but if I was…and he had no way of knowing I’m not…I could have just met him with my .38 and “stood my ground”. Best not to threaten people in a day where a significant % of citizens are armed and trigger happy.
I no longer get involved in road rage. I avoid it like the plague even if somebody cuts me off or pissses me off in traffic.

Thanks for the vid man. Lol I stopped watching when I saw our “new and improved” safety get burnt on a half back pass for a TD. Oddly enough this is how I envision using Simms I think he could do all that. I’d offer mike capt caveman Williams a prove it deal for more quality depth at wr. Quality being the keyword there.

So much bitterness… I remember that feeling in that Ravens game, as I drove home after the second quarter.
