Josh Johnson Speaks

August 7th, 2009

Joe grabbed a few minutes today with seemingly forgotten quarterback Josh Johnson, a Bucs draft pick in 2008. Limited reps in training camp is not fazing the youngster — at least not publicly.

Joe: What’s your focus coming into this year’s camp?

Josh Johnson: My focus is playing the quarterback position the best way I can. I really don’t get involved with everything [regarding quarterbacks who are new or are gone] …That really doesn’t pertain to me. All I really try to do is be a leader of this team as a quarterback and play to my best ability.

Joe: What the biggest difference in the Gruden offense and the Jeff Jagodzinski offense?

Johnson: Just another offense. I feel like I’m a smart enough player and I pick up offenses very well. And I picked up this offense very well. So far it’s been a smooth transition. … It’s been good.

Joe: You were known for your intelligence in college and not turning over the ball.

Johnson: I feel that’s a key thing to playing the quarterback position is how smart you are. And not turning the ball over. That separates the greeat quarterbacks from just the good quarterbacks. I want to eventually be a great quarterback. So that’s what I’m striving to be.

Joe: Do you feel like you’re getting that opportunity to start? If not, is it hard to go through these two-a-days and through training camp?

Johnson: No. Because it’s a long season. It’s a long training camp. The thing about the quarterback position is there’s only one guy playing at one time. All it takes is one, two snaps and you’re out there. And once you get your opportunity, you gotta take it and run with it. So I mean even though you’re not getting the reps, you’ve got to stay mentallly in it. A lot of our position is all mental anyway. And that’s what I’ve been doing. So when I do get my opportunities I can take advantage of them.

I love this kid and I sure do hope they find a way to keep him.

Its unfortunate that such a bright young prospect probably won’t get the chance he deserves at least in Tampa. Maybe I’m wrong.

He is probably the best shot….
