Derrick Brooks “Is Gonna Meet With Jameis Every Day”

Bucs fans will sleep better tonight knowing this fresh piece of news.
Derrick Brooks made two appearances on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620 yesterday, as part of a live-remote event with the Tampa Bay Storm.
After the first appearance, co-host Ian Beckles, Brooks’ former Bucs teammate, shared what he called an “off-the-air” conversation with Brooks earlier that day.
The two talked about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.
“He’s going to meet with Jameis every day when [Jameis] comes back to Tampa,” Beckles said of Brooks. “That’s never happened in the history of the NFL, where somebody takes their time to mold somebody, and Derrick said the same thing I’ve been saying the whole time, ‘Jameis Winston is used to success his whole career, which is cool. The second he fails, how is he going to deal with it?’ And that’s going to be the most important thing.”
There was silly speculation before the NFL Draft that Brooks would have Jameis live with him, if the Bucs indeed drafted Jameis.
That was never going to happen, but this fresh news is far better. First, it’s great that Jameis is open to this kind of daily mentoring, and there can’t be a better local choice. Second, Joe would have worried about Jameis if he wanted to live with Brooks and his wife and kids. That’s not what a 21-year-old millionaire should be interested in.
For those unaware, Brooks has served as a regular mentor and sounding board for Lavonte David and other Bucs in the past. The “every day” component for Jameis is a level Joe had never heard attached to another player.

It’s great brooks will be with him. He’s a great role model. My concern is this. Everyone in the media is talking about what a great leader Winston is. The joes have even said he should be a captain. I would argue we really don’t know yet because he’s not been through much adversity. There are many who can lead when things are going well. VERY few can lead through adversity. Our only glimpse of Jamies during adversity is during Oregon game when he appeared to melt down and Jimbo had to calm him down. Way too early to call Winston a great leader, great qb or even franchise qb. Let’s remember he’s not played a down in the NFL. He has great potential and I’m rooting for him.. I just hope everyone lowers their expectations. He’s a kid with great potential, he’s not yet “Americas QB.!

Good news. Nole ties run deep. Lets hope the best player and one of the best men in the history of this franchise can one day pass the torch and that honor to the most talented QB the Bucs have ever drafted.
If Jameis can keep his head straight, make good decisions and maintain the work ethic and desire to be exceptional that has carried him to this point – then this franchise is in for one hell of a great run for years to come. Let the games and the Winston era begin….

@Bucnut2 I would argue Jameis had more adversity than the Oregon game. Last season at FSU he led them undefeated against 5 of the best defense in the FBS(top 20), most of those wins seemingly coming from Jameis 2nd half efforts to dig them out of the hole (sometimes he was the one to put them in the hole in the first place). Though clearly unproven in the professional ranks outside of offseason camps, I’d still give him more cred when it comes to the man’s leadership.

I don’t see many Winston hater posts here, actually very few, maybe down to one or two. If Winston was’nt with the Bucs, the hating would have been enormous. So Winston gives Bucs fans hope.

I think Winston’s so called “meltdown” with Jimbo in the Oregon game was way overblown, and I like the way he tried to pick up Cooks spirits after his fumbles.

Good to see Bucnut back. And not to argue with you much Pickgrin because I respect your opinion but I believe that we drafted Steve Young in a supplemental draft so……….a bit early to call JW more talented than SY. Not saying that he won’t be because I Damm sure hope he will be. Just hopin all folks will let the kid be a rookie.

Jameis will be a fine leader. He has that competitive edge that makes for a great leader. Regardless of what happens on the field, he wilL be having fun and getting his teammates fired up to win. Hes an optimist. He doesnt Stay upset for very long.

It’s easier to deal with failure than to deal with success( Remember Clint Longley), these are the Bucs people expect failure from us. It’s not like we are the Pittsburgh Steelers,if we win 6 games people will say( they had a decent season) but we’re going 10-6 this season. Jameis was drafted into the ideal situation, a team that people have low expectations of. After a season of Josh McCown it will be impossible for Jameis to fail, especially playing for the Bucs.

The LeBron James of football will be just fine.(He didn’t need to play any college ball) I think he’s going to surprise many of us including me. YES he’s a rookie, but I have a suspicion he might not play like one. We’ll see though. Either way it’s a win-win for most Buc fans. If he has troubles takes his lumps and learns from it. We all should be happy. If he exceeds what the average rookie QB is expected to do, then it will be all rainbows and unicorns for every Buc fan. Nothing but glee the rest of the way.

My 7 yr old son said something very profound to me today. When I was cooking breakfast he was playing Minecraft and he came up to me and said ” Dad. we can’t really be in Creative mode until we are in Heaven right?” I looked at him sideways and he said. “Well in real Life it is like being in Survival mode. We can get cut, hurt and die and everything costs money. When we go to heaven we can be in Creative mode forever!

87 there will never be a LeBron of football. Lebron plays on a five man unit that plays O and D. He is the TRUE meaning of One player being the major part of a team. In Football there are way too many moving parts for ANY man to make shot calls like LeBron is doing right now. He can basically Pick his own team.

Hey guy- just want to clarify my point. I think JW has the potential to be an AWESOME NFL QB. BUT he has not played a down in the NFL which is VERY different than college. I’m VERY optimistic
but think the media is asking WAY to much of him. Can he lead the team? Yes eventually, but for now, let’s let him be a rookie and make rookie mistakes. Let him develop without having to be the savior of this franchise. Heck let’s let him be him and watch him grow. I think the median including this site, Pewter Report and the local newspapers have done JW a big disservice by putting too much on him. I’ll repeat what I said earlier, he is NOT America’s QB, an elite NFL QB or even a Franchise QB yet. He has not proved it on an NFL field. I love the guy. Let’s give him the space to grow without setting him up for failure as I believe the media including the Joes are doing.

Once again : He DID not need to play college football. LeBron James as you MIGHT or might not know did NOT play college basketball.
So essentially what I believe is Jameis could have skipped college ball and went straight to the pros from high school just like LeBron….

Watching Jameis in 2013. I said to many many many people that he’s the LeBron James of football. MEANING he does NOT need to play college ball. That’s how good I thought he really was.

Bucnut2…Oh I’m giving him space. Like I said I think he’s going to surprise even me. One of his biggest fans on this site. I’m not expecting great things form a rookie. Then again when he was a redshirt freshmen I didn’t expect big things either. I’m with you, I just want to see him grow and get better and better.
Something tells me though, he’s going to exceed my expectations.
@ GatorBuc …BTW…once again I HATE today’s non basketball association. They don’t play by the rules of basketball anymore with all the traveling and double dribbling that goes on. So LeBron, the biggest violator of traveling in NBA history’s stats are meaningless to me.

I am glad for us the fans, but its sad we drafted a player that needs a babysitter.
I still think that in 5 years it will be Mariotta that will be the star. But, its the Buc’s, so we know disappointment.
