Beckles Irked At Jameis

July 4th, 2015
Sports radio host seems to have found a new Bucs player to gripe about.

A popular local sports radio host seems to have found a new high-profile Bucs player to gripe about.

In the mind of former Bucs guard Ian Beckles, apparently NFL players should be tied up in straight jackets, muzzled and locked in cages during their whole career, and the only time they should be seen is on Sunday afternoons — and they are not allowed to talk at all unless they get a radio gig after their careers.

Beckles has long had a thorn in his side because Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has a personality and enjoys answering questions. Now, Beckles is turning his ire about players having the nerve to talk and the gall of having a personality to “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston.

Recently, at an NFL-mandated function for top rookies in Los Angeles, Winston did an interview with the NFL Network. He said, is so many words, he is looking forward to facing All-World defensive tackle J.J. Watt of Houston.

This drove Beckles nearly off the edge as he sounded off on his WDAE-AM 620 radio show, heard weekday afternoons with co-host Ron Diaz. Beckles implied Jameis has set up Evan Smith (no fan of Jameis to begin with) to get torn up by Watt play after play in Week Three.

“I didn’t know Jameis plays guard and tackle and center,” Beckles sniped. “He will not be matched up with J.J. Watt, will he? How’s he going to be matched up against him? What you don’t want as a lineman is for the defensive lineman across from you and the quarterback to have something going on that inspires that guy to want to get after the quarterback even more, and then I have to deal with it?”

Beckles then strongly hinted Jameis needs to be quiet and then claimed he heard that Jameis told people he wasn’t going to talk.

When did Jameis say this? Joe has no record of such a statement. This just in: the NFL requires — yes, orders — starting quarterbacks to talk. A lot. No less than twice a week. So if Beckles thinks Jameis needs to be quiet, Beckles is going to have a long, long, long period of suffering.

Joe likes Beckles, but how come he’s allowed to talk — make a decent living at it, in fact — but it bothers him when players talk? Some might suggest that’s a double-standard.

Joe thinks it is an absolute breath of fresh air for Jameis to be honest when asked a question — by representatives of the freaking league, for crying out loud! If the Bucs and the NFL itself are good with Jameis talking — and both entities very much are — why should a sports radio host get his briefs in a bunch over it?

Frankly, Joe hopes this inspires Smith to play over his head for a change. To hear more about the subject, click the black button below. Audio courtesy of Joe’s friends at WDAE-AM 620.

    Joe,

Maybe Jameis told mutual contacts that he wasn’t going to talk, no ‘on the record’. I agree with Beckles. Love the fire and personality, but why in the world would you give THAT guy any more ammo!? That’s just plain dumb.

  2. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

This is so boring nothing to talk

  3. holymoly Says:

How long till the 1st game ? Typical offseason BS , gotta have something to talk about I guess.

  4. Charlie V Says:

Nope Joe’s i’ll not take the bait and listen to the link. Why waist my time listening to a never was rant against those that that have the talent to be stars in the NFL. If the offensive lineman wilt because of Jameis’s statements then get some lineman with balls.

  5. Digga101 Says:

Beckles has how many rings???? He should concentrate on that dumb a## game of birthday challenge and use those useless skills on that in stead of worrying about what the quarterback said. I’m just sayin!

  6. Tiny Tim Says:

    @ Tony

You agree with Beckles? What was jameis suppose to say? He is looking forward to playing against Larry English or EJ Biggers? Guess what, if you asked JJ watt who he most wanted to play against as a rookie, I bet he would have said Manning or Brady etc. Why? Because they were the best at that time. Jameis is a competitor. I thought you would have realized that when he threw over 100 passes at his pro-day which no qb has ever done. The sooner buc fans realize what they have in Jameis, the sooner you can appreciate him and enjoy the ride.

  7. Tom Edrington Says:

    Wise words for Jameis:

“He who exhaults himself shall be humbled………”

  8. The Real Malloy Says:

Yeah, Beckles is always pissing and moaning. Bashing the face of the franchise because he’s a nice guy, now he’s bashing our QB? Our QB who is supposed to bring us to the promised land. Our QB who will finally bring our beloved franchise back to relevance, and he’s gonna cry about the guy being competitive?

Ian, no one cares what you think. Its beyond me that you have your own radio show. Leave Jameis and Gerald alone…

  9. Ryan Says:

now I remember why my visits to this site has been less and less this summer bc of dumb articles about Winston.

  10. Rrsrq Says:

I guess everyone wants a repeat of the cute and quiet Josh’es, why? He has been humbled by the opportunity to play the game he loves and COMPETE at its highest level.

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

What exactly did he say that would give Watt more motivation? I’m thoroughly confused by this line of reasoning. Jameis gave Watt a compliment. He said he wants to go against the best. He called Watt the best. Am I missing something here? And seriously, to those of us that have seen Watt play, do you really think it’s going to matter one way or the other? As if Watt takes plays off when he’s not properly motivated! The guy’s goes pedal to the metal every single play. I guarantee you he hasn’t thought twice about a nothing comment made by Jameis. Give me a break.

As for Beckles, enough already. I try not criticize the guy, because I know he’s just doing his job. But seriously, all this guy does is complain about this team. That’s fine and most times he’s probably right, but it’s draining to listen to it over and over. It’s like my wife who’s been pissed at me for 3 days about me losing my phone. There comes a point where I just don’t want to hear that sh!t anymore. Stop grasping for straws Beckles, there’s plenty of real materiel there. You don’t need to make stuff up.

  12. Fsuking Says:

Man this guy has his panties in the tightest wad.

  13. Buccfan37 Says:

Even on the radio most every day you become a star. Now where is the grub and those hot babes? I’m hungry and horny.

  14. RCS Says:

So Winston was asked who is looking forward to playing against and he answered JJ Watt and somehow he is calling him out? that’s idiotic…. Also if you think this answer is going to give Watt some type of extra push you are clueless to what players like Watt are like… The guy doesn’t need any extra anything, he knows his skills and ability and knows he’s better than 99% of the people across from him….

  15. BucFan20 Says:

Easy fix. Don’t listen to his show and you don’t listen to him complain. I quit affter the second time and don’t miss it a bit.

  16. BucFan20 Says:

    ^ after

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hardly think JJ Watt needs extra motivation….I think he always plays 100% and it shows…

Now…..lets unleash Jameis on ISIS…..Boko Haram, Hamas an Al Qaeda…..

  18. Mike Says:

Beckles needs to concentrate on doing his own job. Btw it seems that Brett farve use to have an ongoing discussion with a certain bucks all pro DT and Beckles never opened his yap then

  19. Ben Says:

WHY WHY WHY do most of your articles talk about Winston? That was a dumb remark made about JJWatt but you defend him and praise him like he is part of your family … Wait till he proves himself of the field because if he doesn’t Joe … Your gonna have a lot of words to eat

  20. Luther Says:

Easily my least favorite how on 620wdae…when I think of these guys, I think birthday challenge and boobs…not sports.

  21. "TheKevin" Says:

That show is just utterly terrible. I can’t believe it’s considered a “sports” show.

Just can’t listen to it. Horrible in every sense of the word!!!

  22. BUCSLEGENDS Says:

    “LIKE SANDS THROUGH THE HOURGLASS……”

WHY WHY WHY do most of your articles talk about Winston? That was a dumb remark made about JJWatt

    ———–

please enlighten us on how this was a dumb remark by Jameis…….

  25. Joe Says:

    Ben:

    Because Jameis is “America’s Quarterback.”

  26. Treybucsfan Says:

Wait…. People listen to Ian Beckles? That’s so dissappointing. Easily worst “talent” on the radio.

  27. John McKillop Says:

Beckles tends to put his twist on comments people make. Stop taking things out of context. Jameis simply said he looked forward to playing against JJ Watt because he is the best at his position. Isn’t this what athletes are supposed to look forward to, playing against the best the league has to offer. I don’t think Jameis said anything inflammatory.

  28. BucIt941 Says:

Let’s face it J.J. Watt is going to blow up ANY offensive line! If Beckles seriously thinks anyone on the Bucs current roster can even keep him at bay he must be delirious. Winston is going to have to face Watt and run for his life most of week3. So in terms of speaking, YES! Winston will be facing off against Watt hopefully Winston can get the ball off quickly or it will be a long day for him! But I like the fire, it’s like prison walk in pick the biggest guy in the room and go for him.

  29. HawaiianBuc Says:

I saw a thing with Tim Tebow mic’ed up the other day. He walked up to some Bears linebacker (I think it was Lance Briggs) and said something to the effect of “it’s an honor to play against you.” How exactly is that any different. Now if you want to argue that Jameis made a mistake in that statement, it’s probably that he didn’t mention someone in his own division. Perhaps those guys might be a bit offended that he didn’t mention them, and maybe that could motivate them to introduce themselves to him. But as far as JJ Watt, there is absolutely nothing Jameis said that should give him any motivation. Maybe he’ll even lay Jameis down softly, since Jameis respects him so much.

  30. Mo_Downs Says:

“To be the BEST you have to beat the BEST”

ATC, I hope ED-S brings his A-game all season. I know Jameis will. And, I have no doubt that JJ Watt will bring his A-game.

The network covering the game as well as the MSM will have this quote for pre and post game chatter.

    GOOD..!!

  31. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Joe I love that rebuttal. Lol…

  32. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

What I appreciate about your site is that you actually monitor it. That gives me some what of a connection to the editor. I like that bro.

  33. loggedontosay Says:

Ian Beckles did not want the defensive linemen being to mean. Poor, Poor Ian Beckles. Beckles is the epitome of the type of talent that the Bucs must avoid drafting or signing in free agency. Ian Beckles clearly explains why the Bucs were so dismal on offense from the time the franchised began. You need to slam him for this Joe!

  34. Eric Says:

Jameis hasn’t done a thing since he was drafted for any Buc fan to be upset about.

Anyone who is upset with him is trying to make something out of nothing.

The kid has been humble, hard working, and kept a low profile. As low as a starting QB and number one overall pick can be. And one who has his every move scrutinized to the nth degree.

Ian runs his mouth for a living, but Jameis can’t answer a question. Rich.

  35. Rob Says:

I suppose Beckles thinks Sapp and Favre never faced off in agame either. What a clown.

  36. Mumbles Says:

    Nutcase!!!

  37. Dreambig Says:

Funny what this artical shows. Jameis welcomes the challenge to face the best. Ian’s comments show he would be scared to face him and would just hope to meet Watt on a off day. That pretty much sums up why we will never see Ian in the HOF. I like Jameis’s moxy!

  38. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with Ian620 on this one but the kid is young and he’ll learn……. on his back from JJ.

  39. JonBuc Says:

Beckles makes Frank Middleton seem cool…..

  40. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Lilmacattack he’ll get up and tell jj I’ll be right here all game. I ain’t going no where. Some of us just don’t believe in backing down. We rather die than have to.

  41. Bill G. Says:

Ron and Ian are still on the air? I listened to the Ron and Ron show back in the 80s, The Ron and Ian show is just a rehash of that. The problem is, I am no longer entertained by DJs who constantly talk and act like middle school boys. I’d prefer a sports show without the has been radio host. Of course, that would leave Ian, amd he is equally as annoying. How about putting JP in that slot?

  42. BoltIsle Says:

I’m sure Buc Nation would have been happier if he would have just said we suck and will all season.
To say he “called out” JJ Watt is asinine to say the least. It’s trolling to some folks that he has not given a true reason to criticize hm in 20 months.
Joe posts about Jameis because he generates clicks and clicks generate money. If you’re still pining over Marcus, Teen Titans Go is on Cartoon Network Daily.
    Hawaiian Buc……..enjoy your objective posts.

  43. BoltIsle Says:

    Correction 10 months

  44. JabooBuc Says:

OMG. Finally we have a QB that’s not a puss and Someone has a problem with that? This is what winning looks like people. Competitors like to compete against the best. If whatever guard or tackle lined up against Watts can’t handle his business then Jameis will call him out and help find a replacement.

  45. Josh P Says:

Im pretty sure one of Favre’s favorite players to play against was ole #99…Becuase Sapp was the best during that time.. Nothing wrong with what JW said.. Ian plays this elites attitude because he’s a former player and average at best… This is the reason i ignore this station as much as possible.

  46. Wes Says:

The guy was asked a question and answered it.
What does Beckles mean he doesn’t play guard, tackle or center the quarterback doesn’t play head to head with anybody.
I remember Brett Favre and Warren Sapp had a big time rivalry playing against each other. Beckles is allowed his opinion even though it’s stupid.
Thats what you get from a serviceable guard.

  47. Reggie Says:

Come on Beckles Jameis had to talk, McCoy had to talk, you need to he quiet. He didn’t say anything bad about Watt. He actually was very complimentary in his response. If Smith is worried about blocking Watt maybe he needs to join Sam northbof the border

  48. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Beckles and Jameis are both idiots. Jameis does need to keep his MOUTH SHUT! Cant believe the Glazers approved this thug.

  49. White Tiger Says:

It doesn’t matter how highly you are ranked, the rookie rule applies – shut up until you’ve done something. Everything you say WILL be held against you (or more precisely, your teammates)…and until you know something – you haven’t earned the right to say something.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

Hey Ian look close into your computer screen. Loo real close deep into the screen.

There you find ME giving you the middle finger!

I’m back guys…..Did you miss me much?

  51. Buc1987 Says:

Something tells me that if it was Mariota talking instead FAMOUS. Some of you guys would not have a problem with it….

And that my friends is the damn truth!

  52. BoltIsle Says:

Based on how Jameis has handled it so far, I’d say his teammates have his back.
Absolutely nothing wrong with his Watt comment as he wasn’t calling him out.
Winston supporters acknowledge he’s made mistakes. His detractors get personal and refuse to admit he can do even one thing right. I’d bet the petty comments of his detractors only serve to strengthen the trust and bond between Tampa Bay’s QB and his teammates. At the very least, he’s made us relevant again.

  53. gotbbucs Says:

What a joke. Next non-story please, the NFL media has turned this sport into such soap opera/reality tv show.

  54. Trubucfan22 Says:

I didn’t mind it at all. JJ watt is the best player on any defense. Why wouldn’t Jameis want to compete against the best player in the league? Who should he say he wants to play against, that it wouldn’t be made a big deal? Anything he says is blown out of proportion. He could have said Revis, and he would have been ridiculed. It really doesn’t matter. But personally I have loved everything he has said. He has meaning behind what he says, and it’s not just the company line. It’s really a breath of fresh air to have a guy that isn’t scared to say what he wants to. He isn’t shaming himself or his team, so who cares. He is not like the other 20+ players who have been suspended this off season for peds and other illegal substances.
