“All Five Receivers Open”
July 2nd, 2015Those starving for football — the way Joe aches for the backyard and neighborhood-wide smells of grilled beef on Independence Day — will enjoy a new Xs and Os look at the last glory day of Tampa Bay Buccaneers football.
Yes, Joe’s talking about a victory, that rare animal only seen twice last season — but not in Tampa.
The Washington Post film guru, Mark Bullock, broke down the Bucs’ last win, against the Redskins at Washington in November. Of course, he’s dialed in from the Redskins’ perspective, but various looks show the coverage woes of the Bucs linebackers.
Here’s one snippet backed up by a photo:
Washington gets a perfect look for this play. The Bucs run their Tampa 2 coverage. The safeties drop too far back, as do the flat defenders. Griffin quite literally has all five receivers open and a clean pocket to work from. All he has to do is throw one of the corner routes for an easy first down.
Hey, five receivers open. That’s hard to ignore. Yes, RGII was a bad quarterback against Tampa Bay. RGIII didn’t pull the trigger on that play, needlessly scrambled, and then too a hit while throwing incomplete.
Going through the entire analysis and still shots got Joe remembering just how off the Bucs linebackers looked on play-action fakes last year, and in coverage too often.
It was a clear sign they were uncomfortable in the defense. Mason Foster also was lacking the speed to make up for much. Hopefully, athletic Bruce Carter, who is new to middle linebacker, represents an improvement.

I’m not worried about our D as long as they don’t have to play 42 minutes a game
July 2nd, 2015 at 2:12 pm
I remember after that game the Mob up in DC. Coaches and players almost were fired after that loss! To not shred Lovie’s passive, antiquated system just exposed Washington’s incompetence that day!!!

Same thing happened in minn game. Frazier is hot garbage.

All five receivers open??? I thought you had to be talkling about the Raheem Morris days. It was like that every Sunday!!!!
July 2nd, 2015 at 4:33 pm
That was an excellent read. Sometimes Crappier can undo Crappy.
July 2nd, 2015 at 4:40 pm
For some odd reason I don’t see Aunt Geraldine double teamed on any of these pass plays. But somehow people still argue that he always is.
July 2nd, 2015 at 4:48 pm
That was before the second half of last season where the Defense turned around once the Bucs mastered the new system. It is not antiquated and the Panthers won our division using A variant of Lovie’s system because their HC used to be Lovie’s DC with the Bears. The Cowboys used it last year and did very well too. But it requires a very fast MLB to make it work–you will recall last year I said Foster was too slow at 4.75 in the 40 to make it work. We have Carter there now who knows the system already and has the speed and talent to make it work. The Bucs will be a top ten defense this year–you will see!

It’s amazing ray rice can see anything from those screen shots. You can’t even tell if Mccoy is in the game. If that’s him on the first one, he’s running a stunt. However, you can’t tell spit.
Besides, this clown wouldn’t call him aunt anything to McCoy’s face. Typical Internet tough guy. It’s real easy to talk smack behind your little keyboard, it’s another thing entirely to say it to someone’s face.
July 2nd, 2015 at 5:03 pm
I’d sacrifice my 2nd born for a aggressive d like Rex Ryan runs instead of this passive scheme Lovie runs. Sick of the losing
July 2nd, 2015 at 5:32 pm
When Frazier was D coordinator in Minnesota his defenses always ranked.in the top ten.
July 2nd, 2015 at 5:36 pm
@Hawaiian
I knew that would bring you out of hibernation. LOL Why do you keep following what I write? Maybe because some (not all) of the $hit I say is true. It’s fans like you that wish to accept mediocrity. Good thing you’re not running the team or else they’d probably still have Byron Leftwich at QB.
And why must anyone prove their manhood with starting a fight? It’s idiots like you that get whooped on at the county fair after drinking that courage juice. I’m far from being a tough guy. Nor do I claim to be. But I can handle my own buddy. I’m sure you’ve never called anyone a name.
July 2nd, 2015 at 6:15 pm
Ray rice. I have no problem with an argument or a healthy debate but you are just a little *itch . Grown men don’t go to county fairs. Just sissy a$$ trolls that have there 10 little jitterbug friends with them because they don’t have a set hanging between there legs.

Ever notice how me and you are trolls but realist is just a pessimist? Hmm, interesting.

Graziers first yr or two he had the Williams brothers on the D line after they left he never had a top ten def or top 20 for that matter. Not to mention he won like 3 games as HC so he’s living up to expectations. Look it up if you want, trust me Frazier is just a stop gap until Rod is available.
July 2nd, 2015 at 6:48 pm
@WS99
Hey man I’m not worried about what they think. John 8:32 to all of them. LOL
Man those Williams Bros. were mountains. I remember them. Impregnable in the run game and could collapse a pocket. I believe it. Frazier won’t be there long. Didn’t Rod sign a long term deal recently?
July 2nd, 2015 at 6:52 pm
Only thing that separates realist from you two is he doesn’t have a user name that pokes fun at beating woman. The two of you represent what is wrong with this world. NO FUCN RESPECT.
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:02 pm
Well for now it will be Carter and LVD patrolling the middle, but once Kwon Alexander is ready…It will be him and LVD. The caching staff must have really liked this kid. Now they say he is the fastest and most athletic. Well, can’t wait to see.
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:04 pm
Ray
“John 8:32” – exactly! This little thing called Google it has a bunch of facts in it, it’s crazy.
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:12 pm
Man…I come home from work and can’t wait to see you guys going at it sometimes.
For some reason, I always envision Ray Rice sitting at his computer in a dark downstairs room yelling at his mom to bring him a P.B.J sandwich.

July 2nd, 2015 at 7:22 pm
The Cover 2 is not a passive defense,if there is no pass rush, then every defense is passive. But with a pass rush, this is the ideal defense to get turnovers. When you have Gerald McCoy, Clint McDonald, Henry Melton, Akeem Spence in the middle, the edge rushers should see a lot of man opportunities. I don’t see any reason why George Johnson and Jacquies Smith can’t have double digit sack seasons.
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:22 pm
Funny because I picture him in that same room saying MOM THE MEATLOAF. THE MEATLOAF MOM. NOW
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:49 pm
@Ray Rice = “self proclaimed football genius”.
July 2nd, 2015 at 7:51 pm
I am surprised the Bucs won that game, it was not expected. Griffin had a horrible game like the article made known, at home coming off a bye week. Who would have thought it possible? And who would think the Bucs would go winless at home. I sure did not.
July 2nd, 2015 at 8:06 pm
I’m just waiting for Lovie Smith, in his current stint as the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, to coach his team to a single win at Raymond James Stadium (he hasn’t done that yet), or to coach his team to victory over a division opponent (he hasn’t done that yet, either).
This is Lovie’s defense through and through. Don’t blame Leslie Frazier. He is merely a conduit.
We have a great interior defensive line, but we better hope that Jaq Smith and George Johnson have career seasons on the edge. We have a solid linebacking corps. We are average at the CB position, and we have a huge grab-bag of what-if at the safety position.
We are just not good enough or strong enough across the board defensively to demoralize our opponents.
Dirk Koetter and Jameis Winston will decide our fate this season.
July 2nd, 2015 at 9:59 pm
Lovie has a winning record in this league. Bears fans celebrated his departure and have been losing since. No more hard nosed hard fought chicago games. Lovie cant come in here and make that happen in one year. He knew that. He also learned he had to be more opened minded on offense. This is what I believe. He may prove me wrong but I predict a dramatic turn around with this team. Next year I will be dissapointed if they do not make the playoffs but this year I can see 8 and 8 amd a possible wildcard if things go our way.

July 2nd, 2015 at 10:48 pm
Joe, you have hit the proverbial nail on the head. Sitting in the stands last year, on about the 35 yard line, it looked like the Buc secondary was playing prevent defense…on every play. They were so far off the line of scrimmage the opposing QB could throw a 10 yard completion every play, without the receiver being contested.

I agree 1000% I’m just not as thoughtful or eloquent. You’re right it’s not Lovies defense or fraziers or dungies it’s chuck nolls. lovie needs to step it up.
My philosophy is really out of the 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers playbook,” said Dungy (who played for the Steelers early in his career) during media interviews while at Super Bowl XLI. “That is why I have to laugh when I hear ‘Tampa 2’. Chuck Noll and Bud Carson—that is where it came from, I changed very little

@ Ray Rice
First of all, I read what you write because you keep making stupid comments, and I get a kick out of calling people out who make stupid comments. Plus, you get so easily butt hurt and offended that it’s pretty funny. You said in your first post that you didn’t see McCoy getting doubled, and called out those (me) who think he gets double teamed nearly every play. I simply stated that you can’t tell jack from those screen grabs. Of course you don’t acknowledge that, you just go on and on attempting (very poorly) to describe what you think I am.
And as I’ve said, you aren’t a 3 time pro bowler, a 2 time all pro, and a 2 time top 30 player if you aren’t any good. Maybe if you got one of those three you could argue they aren’t good barometers, but to get all three is a pretty good indicator that you have sh!t for brains when it comes to McCoy’s football ability. Especially when you consider he plays for a small market team that rarely wins.
And no, I don’t accept mediocrity. However, McCoy isn’t the reason we are worse than mediocre. Neither is Lavonte, neither is V-Jax. We are mediocre because we don’t have enough guys like them. We are mediocre because our entire organization has made mistake after mistake for the last 7 years or so. But McCoy is our best player. Argue it all you want. Scream and holler and call him names, it doesn’t change the fact that 99% of people with any football knowledge would agree. Hopefully he won’t be our best player for long, but instead it’s #3. Now you go ahead and keep doing your thing, because it’s a lot of fun watching you cry.
July 3rd, 2015 at 12:10 am
Hey DB. I love all that is broken and together with our team.
Not many are. It is all good man. I’m gonna find another link with my Lab and a Snowmobile for The Team.

Cry? Butt hurt? Offended?… I think you need to go back and take a look at all previous comments and there you will see that the one getting all in his feelings about Geraldine is you. I understand he’s your favorite player but that doesn’t mean it’s or should be mine. A And you state that 99% agree with you and that makes them knowledgeable. LMFAO You pulled that stat out your a$$ or what?
As far as my comment earlier. You obviously replied because the shoe fit. I didn’t even mention your name. You aren’t the only DOOMASSS on this site who thinks he gets double and triple teamed 99% of the time. And now you’re trying to have the masses join you as you state that everyone who agrees with your assessment obviously has great football knowledge. LMFAO. Are you FUKN serious?
However, I agree with you on one thing. Hopefully THE MESSIAH becomes our best player soon. Because that would mean our YUCS will no longer be the FUKN laughing stock of the NFL.

July 3rd, 2015 at 12:52 am
@Ray Rice,
I stated you wouldn’t call him Aunt Geraldine to his face, because you wouldn’t. It’s not about defending him, it’s more about calling you out as an internet tough guy, because that’s what you are. And yes, 99% would agree with me. He’s the one that has been all pro twice. He’s the one that has made the pro bowl 3 times. He’s the one that has been top 30 two years in a row. Anyone else on our team had those honors? Who do other OC mention first when they talk about our defense? Who do you think votes for those awards? I’m going to take their opinions a lot more serious than some internet clown who calls him Aunt Geraldine. You’re a complete fraud who can’t handle facts so just goes around acting like a tough guy on the internet. Even your fake name is fitting.
July 3rd, 2015 at 2:06 am
@Ray Rice,
Actually getting 2nd team all pro is like going to the pro bowl, but not starting. However, I know that comparisons aren’t your thing.
So you are of the belief that all those awards are just products of a flawed voting system? Whatever, buddy. Keep telling yourself that. You’re bound to have someone believe you. And once again you are wrong with your attempt to guess the kind of person I am (you sure do seem to be obsessed with that). I don’t vote for the Pro Bowl.
I didn’t say Lavonte can’t be spoken in the same breath as Gerald. I love David, but I don’t think he’s as good as Gerald. He’s a fantastic player, and definitely one of the most underrated and under appreciated players in the league. Had he had another season last year like 2013 that might be a different story, but he didn’t so I’m not going to say he’s better than McCoy.
And if you could comprehend what is written, you would understand what I wrote about the 99%. You obviously can’t, and it’s way too late for me to dumb myself down to your level any more.
July 3rd, 2015 at 2:26 am
@Hawaiian
Keep hanging your hat on those bull$hit awards. If that makes you feel better then go right ahead. I bet seeing #93 as an alternate really makes your day. Keep trying to find that silver lining. But take the TRUTH for what it is. Your boy #93 is a good player. Not great.
And please don’t get any dumber. You’re already blind. How much more disability do you want to collect?
July 3rd, 2015 at 5:23 pm
Anyone who thinks the Bucs defense is passive doesnt know anything about football. Simeon Rice, Warren Sapp, those passive defensive players. The defense is predicated upon getting pressure on the offense from up front. If predicated is too big a word, its means you got to have it.
