Hardcore JoeBucsFan.com readers, and those who listen to Joe on the radio with Steve Duemig on WDAE-AM 620, know there are two “Joes,” the guys who pound the keyboard here and cover the Bucs all over the country.
Rarely is there significant disagreement in the ranks, but a giant divide has developed.
This morning, one Joe revealed a firm belief that Lovie Smith is safe in his job through 2017, barring a winless 2015, and as long as there’s an arrow pointing up after that. Read the full take here.
But the Joe typing here disagrees — and sincerely hopes it’s an inaccurate take. Lovie did a horrific coaching job last year. Dreadful. If the Bucs win three games this year, then Lovie will have done another horrific job, and it likely will mean it was another miserable year for his defense, a handpicked, veteran group. In that scenario, “this Joe” believes Team Glazer should and would hunt for a new head coach, rather than invest in Lovie when he’s proven unworthy.
Simple as that, as Lovie would say.
Regardless, this should all be a moot point, as both Joes believe the Bucs are a six-win team in 2015, led by America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

Hopefully, the other Joe is correct. The last thing we need is to #$## up a young quarterback with a coaching carousel. Koetter needs to stay a min of 3 years no matter what.

dead on my friend and joe of all people should know that you don’t judge a coach based off the one season in a new scheme that has weak defensive talent and you don’t fire a coach and ruin the stability a rookie quarterback needs those first 3 years especially if you took him first overall. bad reporting because we all know if the bucs do well this year they’ll be talking about the amazing transformation after that awful season and not the awful season itself because every team has moved on from last year even the superbowl champions. your 6 win prediction doesn’t come from nfl experience just a journalist opinion

I am in the other Joe’s camp…but not through 17…….I think Lovie is safe through 16…..that’s this year and next….almost no matter what. The only reason that could change would be if Lovie totally lost his players….and I don’t think he’s that style of coach.
The Glazers know that they can’t keep churning coaches and are all-in with Lovie.
They have finally wised up.
I also agree that this is a moot point and that the Bucs will have 5-7 wins this year.

thank goodness one of the Joe’s is steeping up to the plate and saying the status quo is unacceptable!!
We know exactly which Joe is giving Lovie a pass until 2017! The one who said he had 100% confidence and no issue with the defense last year. The yes-man to the show host! Ed McMahon thinks you sound like a parrot during that one hour show!!!
Tell me this Joe who gives out the pass. What is Lovie bringing to the Table? What did he learn from the year off in the basement??? Why does the Veteran coach who knows what is doing need more time then everyone else???

Dear realistic-of-the-2-joes,
Thanks for not feeding us drunken optimism sprinkled with an ounce of let’s just forget 2014 existed for everyone. Last year was horrible, and yes, aside from bringing his track record, Lovie did not bring one single strength to this team last year other than a calm mentality to a poor football team.
Bad personnel decisions, poor drafting, inability to adjust mid game or at any point in the season, pigeon-holing players to HIS scheme, hiring Licht (sorry, know you probably don’t agree R-O-T-2-Js), overpaying unproven talent, and backing yourself into a corner without depth.
Too many of the same decisions seem to happening this offseason and if the same result happens in 2015, the good news is we will have a top pick, bad is it might be Lovie commenting on the pick as an employee of NFL network.

And some of you old timer fans need to stop! You are embarrassing “real” Buc fans! You know who you are, talking about we don’t know what losing is! Look, when I see something I don’t like, I do something about it. I have written letters, I have sent emails! I have presented and spoken at city council meetings. You just sit there hoping one day it will change, Just like you did way back when you all just sat around, just happy to be there!

That’s why the Joes should credit who writes which article. As it’s hard to believe two people actually believe Dominik was a good gm and Jameis is America’s qb. Lovie has got to be gone with less than 4 wins. He sucks

I can believe how badly the Bucs were out-coached on both offense and defense in so many games last year.
Just the fact that we kicked the ball to Devin Hester in that Atlanta game the entire coaching staff should have been canned.

Think he’s safe through 2016 season. He needs and deserves 3 years. However, if we go 6-10 or worse all bets are off on finishing 2016 as head coach. Think 6 wins is the bare minimum, skin of his teeth number.

If Lovie doesent win at least six games, he needs to go. He won two last year so his seat is already hot. There has to be real improvement this year, at minimum 6-10 or 7-9. Stumbling to a 4-12 finish isn’t progress.
I like Lovie I think he will go 7-9 this year. I think the quarterback play made the whole team look worse than it really was. But again, Lovie wanted Mccown. So he gets no mulligan for last year.

Lovie and Licht go hand and hand. They will both have one more year. When I think of Lovie I think of defense. The question is can this defense be successful with the personnel we have to implement it? After this year what will be clear is how well the Bucs drafted in 2014? If Seferian-Jenkins, Sims, Pamphile and Edwards continue to struggle and Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet and others in the 2015 draft appear to not be the players the Bucs expected, it will be a reflection on both. Add in the FA overpaying of talent. After this year it should be crystal clear if the Buccaneers continue to lose that it comes down to the personnel decisions made in 14 and 15, have been a success or not.

My opinion is they fired Schiano after the 2nd year. Yes that guy everyone loves to hate but has never done as bad as Lovie did last year. Lovie needs to be held to the same standard. So far he’s shown to be WORSE than Schiano. Hope he can turn it around. Lovie needs 9 wins to match Schiano’s wins total after year 2.
Please dont tell me that Lovie took over a bad team blah blah blah. He took over the same team Schiano had and made it worse. All the excuses in the world doesn’t change that fact. I personally believe Lovie got super lucky being able to draft Winston. He may of just saved his Bucs coaching career.

Even though the Vegas over/under is 6 wins, I doubt the final result will be anywhere near 6 wins. Depending on how good or bad the play in the trenches are on both sides of the ball and looking at the opponents this year, I expect a 2-4 wins or 8-10 wins. Both the OL & DL are questionable and their performance will determine the fate of the season.

Lovie Smith is not here if the Bucs win three games. Glazers wouldn’t need more time to see that Lovie was weak sauce. Thankfully, they’re not stupid. 2017? That’s completely insane. Hand the team over to Koetter if Lovie can’t get out of the division basement. That would keep some continuity, and let him roll from there.

Yeah I think 6 wins is close. I also think they may be able to surprise us a bit too. The teams they have to play must play up to their expectations too

Nobody really KNOWS what is going to happen in the future. We ALL have opinions and we may “believe” we know what is going to happen.
Bottom line is you can believe the Bucs will play well and Lovie will be a success.
Or you can believe that Lovie sucks the Bucs are thin talent wise and it’s just a matter of a year or two before we jettison Lovie. But whichever you believe NOBODY can know what is going to happen. Injuries…always huge…any off field distractions…not just Jameis here but any player…LUCK!!! and then the competition…how strong is our division.
And so I choose to believe the optimistic viewpoint. Ten wins…playoffs..one and done…we get serious in 2016. The turnaround is underway guys. If we were in the NFC West I’d be far more negative in my prediction. But our division clearly sucks…and nobody did much to improve…Drew Brees another year older and without his star receiver who is now in Seattle. Does Cam Newton really scare you that much? And Atlanta is pretty much in the same boat as us. They have some talent on the offensive side…bad OL…defense competitive…they could be surprisingly tough.
Lovie rides Fameis Jameis the way Belicheat has ridden Brady. Lovie is golden!

With Brees getting older I think Matt Ryan is the best QB in the South. I also like Atlanta’s draft a lot and Jones is a beast. Even though they have a new OC, I think they will win the Division. Carolina will be right behind them and we will be fighting with the Saints for third place. That’s the way I see it right now.
