What Do The Numbers Mean?
June 30th, 2015With the possible exception of stud outside linebacker Lavonte David, no Bucs player could be considered elite in his class — unless his name is Gerald McCoy.
GMC is a dominant 43 defensive tackle, perhaps second only to Geno Atkins of the Bengals. Pull Warren Sapp aside and the Hall of Famer will insist GMC is a better player than he was.
However, is GMC the perfect fit for Lovie’s version of the Tampa-2? Here is where numbers could be misleading. Or maybe not.
Based on GMC’s numbers from 2014, it was his worst in three years. By way of Jason Kanno of Bleacher Report, GMC had less than half the quarterback hurries he had in the final year of the New Schiano Order. It was also the only time the past three years GMC had single-digit quarterback hits.
Just looking at the numbers, one could conclude GMC is slipping. However, this doesn’t factor in quick-step drops opposing quarterbacks used, or how, with a Ghost playing next to him, teams knew they could double- or triple-team GMC. There was zero pass rush to worry about.
There is more to the story than just numbers can provide. One could also argue the Bucs defense was so wretched, teams just boat-raced the Bucs so easily, the defense faced fewer passing snaps and/or few passes defended than usual, hence, fewer chances to drill quarterbacks.

**************
Wow! So schiano had him playing better with Adrian clayborn and te’o? Interesting. Lovie will turn things around I’m sure. He’s a waaaayyyy better coach than schiano, he’s a defensive guru and of course IT TAKES TIME.
June 30th, 2015 at 1:47 pm
Schiano got more out of his players. Lavonte David had His best years under Schiano. It’s as simple as that. Doug Martin Bobby Rainey all had better years under Schiano.
June 30th, 2015 at 1:56 pm
is this considering that GMC was actually out a few games as well?
June 30th, 2015 at 1:57 pm
Everybody had better years under Schiano because the Bucs werer 2-14 last year!
June 30th, 2015 at 2:11 pm
Everybody cried about Schiano running stunts on the D-line and it was the reason our sack numbers were down, yet how many sacks did the Dline have with the great Lovie Smith last year? Hmmmm. Do I agree with playing guys like TEO’Nesheim and Tiquan Underwood? Hell no! But I also don’t agree with us playing Garrett Gilkey and Patrick Omameh either. So we trade one head coaches personnel mistakes for another. Round and round we go.
June 30th, 2015 at 2:37 pm
Was wondering when someone would point this out. Schiano, like most coaches, found ways to get his playmakers on D in position to make an impact. Line stunts, slot blitzs and even freeing his LBs to get into the backfield-it allowed David and McCoy to excel.
Lovie signs a guy who can’t get pressure off the edge, and then makes no adjustments at all to help the pass rush.
Because he is a slave to his system and can’t think on his feet.
June 30th, 2015 at 2:39 pm
LOL at the Schiano love. LOL. Like really. LOL.
I am still 1000% more confident in Lovie than Schiano. The defense played MUCH better towards the end of the year whereas Schiano’s defense typically played terribly throughout the entire year.
2012 – Final 10 weeks of the year Schiano’s team gave up 25.2 pts per game
2013 – Final 10 weeks of the year Schiano’s team gave up 25.7 pts per game
2014 – Final 10 weeks of the year Lovie’s team gave up 20.6 points per game
That’s a HUGE difference. Like going from close to bottom of league to close to top 10. And it’s not like that’s a bad sample size. And don’t give me “more with less”. Schiano had freaking Revis and his boys Goldson & Mark Barron lol. What was it “the no fly zone” or something? Schiano also had a great offense for stretches in 2012.
There’s plenty of other things to be negative about without being inaccurate or dumb.
June 30th, 2015 at 2:40 pm
Be careful what you wish for…..Most wanted Schiano’s head…..now many think he is better than Lovie….the one thing both of them have had to deal with is Dominick’s poor drafts…..his incompetence have cost the Bucs at least 5 years. We have almost nothing to show for it.
Time for another Lovie Confidence Poll…..
June 30th, 2015 at 2:43 pm
Supersam: “Everybody cried about Schiano running stunts on the D-line and it was the reason our sack numbers were down, yet how many sacks did the Dline have with the great Lovie Smith last year?”
Excluding DEs, I believe that the Bucs had the highest number of sacks from the DT position in the NFL.
Match that same interior tenacity with the continued emergence of J.Smith and hopefully G.Johnson at the DE positions and we may see a resurgence in the sack numbers to days long past.
June 30th, 2015 at 2:51 pm
Yeah Bucs actually didn’t do that bad in sacks last year; as mentioned they led the NFL in DT sacks. But yeah we really need those stunts back lol… It’s like you guys are searching for things to be pessimistic and depressed
June 30th, 2015 at 2:56 pm
I’d like to see more blitzes from LVD….not sure he can be stopped and he’s our best tackler. It would’d hurt to line GMC up at DE once in a while…..I’m quite sure he could get to the QB….and we have help from Melton on the interior now.

We all knew the moment Lovie was hired, Lavonte David would become a shell of his former self. Especially with the (Will) backers coverage responsibilities. Though Derrick Brooks was the best (Will) Linebacker to ever play the game (No Disrespect Mr. Ham). He only had 13 sacks in 13 years.
Under Schiano, Lavonte David played in a more aggressive 4-3 over front. He was asked to run downfield and attack the line of scrimmage-Opposed to dropping back in coverage. LVD racked up 9 sacks in two years under Schiano. After a full year in the system-hopefully Hardy & Lovie will let Lavonte freelance more this year.

Offenses didn’t need to pass on us. They were never behind, they had reason to believe they would get the ball back in short order if they were to turn the ball over to us and they could take short drops to get the ball out quickly effectively. Of course sack numbers were down.

June 30th, 2015 at 4:08 pm
@Ray Rice,
Yeah, GMC can’t rush late in games because he can’t handle the pressure. He’s a choker. You’ve got it all figured out. It has nothing to do with the fact that defenses have completely figured out that he was about the only one with any pass rush ability whatsoever. He just can’t handle the pressure. It’s too bad that the other NFL players and coaches don’t have the same football knowledge as you. Otherwise, they probably wouldn’t have named him an all-pro, a 3 time pro-bowler, or top 30 in the league.
June 30th, 2015 at 4:09 pm
Of course I’m talking to the guy that still doesn’t believe GMC gets doubled and tripled on virtually ever snap, with the exception of maybe a few short drops here and there.

“Trade him for 3 first rounders. Instant team fix. It worked for Jimmy Johnson”
——-
#1, that was like 25 years ago. Don’t see any team willing to give up that much for any player anymore. Second and most importantly, look at how Dallas drafted with their picks. Most years, you could give us 3 first rounders, and we’d miss on all three. The success of that Cowboys team was their ability to hit on their late round picks as well. They put together an amazing offensive line with no-name guys. Us trading Gerald McCoy for ANYTHING would just give us less talent and many more draft busts.
June 30th, 2015 at 4:48 pm
I completely understand the pessimism towards Lovie after last year. He did very little to deserve much optimism. I’m not excusing him for the mistakes he made last year, because he made too many to list. However, you have to give the guy a chance to implement his system. There was a time when coaches were given 3 or 4 years to build and develop their team. There have been numerous times where that patience was rewarded with winning. Nowadays, fans want coaches fired after 2 games. It’s ridiculous. The worst coach to ever coach an NFL game knows twice as much football as all of us combined. I don’t think it’s unreasonable at all to give Lovie another year without screaming for his head all the time. By about halfway through this year, we’ll probably know if this is going to work or not. By the end of the season, there will probably be no doubt. Let it play out a little, because he might just surprise you.

Yes Lavonte plays alot more shallow zone as oppossed to blitzing under Schiano. But even without Lavonte blitzing, we had the same number of sacks. 36. Just because Lavonte isnt getting as many sacks dosent mean that Lovie is using him wrong. Thats just foolish. He was damn good last year. If he was blitzing, he never eould of got the chance to knock out Jimmy Grahm. Plus now he has q mike next to him that csn cover. Bruce Carter is such an upgrade over Foster. Superior pass coverage will be necessary to help our defensive ends, as back wards as that may sound. I like this defense. I think it will give us a chance to win.
June 30th, 2015 at 5:17 pm
Joe you talk all the time about Lovie will get a break this year if things don’t go well because he’s starting a rookie quarterback, well how I don’t think that’s true, I think if Jameis struggles and the defense takes a step back. It’s bye bye Lovie. Schiano was not granted a pass when we started Glennon.
June 30th, 2015 at 5:22 pm
And for all those saying our Dline is better in Lovies scheme than Schianos your wrong. We just have better talent, Clinton McDonald is better than Gary Gibson. Simple as that.
June 30th, 2015 at 5:32 pm
@Hawaiian
You are basing part of your argument on your “superior” football knowledge right? No one breaks down film like you on Madden football. Then you say that because he was named to pro bowls and the NFL 100 you can’t be wrong. Right?…. Wrong buddy.
The pro bowl and NFL 100 as everyone knows is a crock of $hit. If you believe in pro bowl voting then I guess you also believe Beast LVD should have been left out too huh. You believe in the NFL 100 even though a lot, and I mean a lot of players have come out and said not everyone gets asked to vote and some even say that no one on their team voted. But I guess the Madden champ knows more right?
#93 was named to the AP team once. He earned that. But what games are you watching when you state he gets double and triple teamed all game? Come on man. That is a weak a$$ argument on top of being false.

June 30th, 2015 at 5:54 pm
@Ray Rice….. Things don’t change do they. Just like the real Ray Rice you are absolutely clueless. The consensus of players and coaches alike is that GMC is a dominant player and they game plan for him accordingly. If we ever get an edge rush your small mind will be blown. GMC will have double digit sacks every year.
June 30th, 2015 at 5:54 pm
@Ray Rice,
The Pro Bowl and top 100 isn’t completely accurate, but it’s a far cry from being a crock of sh!t. Lavonte doesn’t get named to the Pro Bowl because he is a 4-3 OLB, so he gets beat out by 3-4 OLB’s, because they get sacks. In this league, that’s what people recognize. It’s not fair, but it’s always been like that.
Had McCoy gotten just a pro bowl and nothing else, maybe you could say he’s overrated. Had he only gotten voted to the top 100 and like #80-100, maybe you could argue he’s not as good as we think. But when he’s got literally every honor a football player can get (on a bad team in a small market no less), I think it’s a safe bet he’s the real deal. And he was actually an all-pro the last two years.
I am no football expert. I can’t count how many times I’ve written that. However, I can see when a guy is getting doubled and tripled. I do watch the game again. I watch McCoy, because he’s our best player and he’s a huge key to our success. I look even harder when I see him not getting pressure. I see two or three bodies on him. So while I may not have a high football IQ, I can count to 3. The only team that really didn’t double him was Baltimore, but they used 3 step drops all game long. But you go ahead with your obsession with him being overrated.

Nope they don’t. Because you keep arguing about how great 1……1……. player is on a 2-14 team. Stop trying to find the silver lining. They are the YUCS right now. And please stop with the whole he never had an edge rusher $hit. What happened when Bennett was there? He was a pretty good edge rusher wasn’t he? And don’t blame Schiano. A professional executes no matter what. That’s what they get paid to do.
June 30th, 2015 at 6:31 pm
Joe can you run a poll on how many of the fans actually think Lovie Tanked the season vs Lovie is a crumby coach…
I refuse to judge lovie or the majority of the players based on last years performance. Our offense was never on the field due to a never will be OC and our defensive stats were swayed from never leaving the field. Its un thinkable to draw any type of conclusions from this teams 2014 season.
This season….no excuses. None!!!
There is zero reason this team should not show tremendous improvement. If they dont then Id say its time to promote koeyter to head coach…but I dont see that happening.
I see this team improving dramatically and going far in the regular season for seasons to come.
Then I see Lovie over stepping Koetter in key moments and screwing things up in the first playoff game.
Then I see the Glaziers firing lovie and dirk koetter winning a superbowl as our head coach with a lovie built defense.
Sound familiar???
June 30th, 2015 at 6:33 pm
A professional executes no matter what.
Toma!!!
June 30th, 2015 at 6:43 pm
Last year the Bucs did not have an offensive coordinator. OC are kinda important you think? With a defense always playing in the hole, and running a new defense is it a surprise that they had a bad year?
June 30th, 2015 at 7:03 pm
A profesional needs to right tools to suceed. Kind of like someone who works on computers all day needs the right software to do his job, a football player could use an oc (software) and not a head coach tanking for his qb (virus). Other Viruses include MRSA, CHEST BUMPING,PUNCHING CAB DRIVERS, SELF INFLICTED STAB WOUNDS, TOES ON THE LINE AND AND UNADJUSTABLE THERMOSTAT.
June 30th, 2015 at 7:16 pm
McCoy had 297 less snaps than 2013. If you extrapolate those lost snaps with maintaining the same productivity McCoy could have had 14 sacks, 10 QB hits and 48 QB hurries. McCoy’s PRP (pass rushing productivity) was and still is incredible for a DT who is constantly double teamed. For all of you doubters. Look at the Dallas Cowgirls record and defense in 2013. The next year with Tampa2 the no name defense went to the playoffs and if it were not for the call agenst Dez Bryant they could have played in the NFC Championship game. All the Buccaneers have to do is stay healthy. We have a winner in Winston and elite players in McCoy, David and Evans.
June 30th, 2015 at 7:22 pm
No comment… Well, ya nevermind
June 30th, 2015 at 7:53 pm
We know things are slow when we start arguing how bad GMC is. We can probably agree on this, however…..GMC & LVD are about all we have to show for Dominiks tenure as GM……where are all the others? This is why we are struggling to win…..it’s not just the coaching….the talent hasn’t been there yet…..I think the last two drafts have been good (this year better)….much will depend on rounds 3-7….
Looking forward to Sims, Edwards & Pamphile (Herron gone)
I think we may have some winners this year with Alexander, Bell & Clay
If that’s the case….one more good draft and we are on our way.

That’s because he hasn’t gotten the recognition he deserves. He flies very much under the radar nationally. I can’t tell you how many of my friends have never even heard of him. I don’t believe I have ever seen him interviewed nationally. We all know the guy has been getting jobbed, so why the hell would we criticize him?
McCoy was drafted with much higher expectations at #3. He battled injuries early, leading to tons of people calling him a bust. There are many that are still butt hurt about that. As crazy as this sounds, I think many fans want him to act like Warren Sapp, and be a complete douche. They don’t like a happy go lucky guy, especially when the team is losing. Bottom line, he’s the face of the franchise, and since we’ve been a losing franchise for so long, he takes a lot of the heat. I think it’s stupid, but I do understand how some could feel that way.

Watching smith and barber battle was always epic, second only to sapp vs Farve or Brooks vs Vick. I love smith’s “manitude” that’s why he’s a winner. But his celebration dances like the row boat and the swashbuckler fencing in the end zone, just brutal but you gotta love that chit.

Howdy Fellas. I am not here to argue. Just to state that if our OL is “Average” then we will have a winning season this yr.
We lost 8 games last yr by a TD or less last yr. With improved QB play, a Top Ten OC, ME in his second yr with he and VJax bonding much better, all we need is an Average OL to open some holes for the running game thereby setting up the TE game which EXPLODES the WR game.
Simple really.

Only two coaches have more wins with the Bears than Lovie: George Halas and Mike Ditka. Those two are gods in Chicago. Lovie? They couldn’t wait for him to leave. And, yes, they are still bitter about his time there. Bears fans believe, just like Tony Dungy, he left rings on the field. Unlike Dungy/Tampa Bay, Bears fans still don’t get a rise in their pants over him.

If Greg Schiano could coach so good, he would have at least been considered for a coaching position.Gerald McCoy played in 13 games last season, during the 2 seasons under Schiano he played in all 16 games, and he never got a rest under Schiano. But Joe Cullen will rotate his D-Linemen, so it’s obvious that he will have worst overall stats. The most important stat is his per play stat. Sheldon Richardson had 66 tackles and 8 sacks last season, we gave the Jets the 1st round pick to get him and they still have Revis back. SMH

Any talk of McCoy and David being anything less than great is foolish. Any mention of Schiano’s name relating to anything good in Tampa is ignorance. And someone was talking about the Bills, holy shite are they gonna have a good defense this year! They might not let up 150 points all year. Of course they might not score any with that QB situation.

OK guys I get it if you find my optimism / praise of anything a 2-14 team to be blashpemous; but that honestly isn’t my main point.
My main point is LOL AT GREG SHIANO ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING ME?!!?
The guy hasn’t got a freaking job for a reason. If he was such a good coach you think some smart football related person would have hired him.
I get it.. we had half as many wins with lovie omg. But I’m honestly one of those people who would rather go 2-14 than 4-12 or 5-11. If we are going to lose; then let’s f*cking lose and get a QB in the draft. There is not much difference in the NFL Between a lot of 2-5 wins. Bottom line was the team sucked.
Beggning of the year I was horrified by what I saw. I thought “man; wtf defense is this I thought Lovie would bring us a top 10 unit” while watching that Falcons game.
But for the first year in awhile I feel like I saw the team improve steadily throughout the season in a few aspects (not O-line or Offense). I saw them identify talent and upgrade various positions (McDougal/J Smith/etc). I saw them admit their FA failures and cut bait after the season was over (collins/ghost/mccown). The team didn’t have an OC. That’s on Lovie for not having a backup plan but honestly I am just so happy we have Winston i could give two sh*ts. The season was lost early on. I never had ANY hope in Mike Glennon.
I am a huge Winston believer so it’s impacted my optimism a lot. And the fact is the stats completely back up the idea that Lovie’s defense has a learning curve. top 10 defense for last 10 weeks. Im not going to say they actually looked like a top 10 defense; but I’d think they were more of a middle of the pact unit; than the bottom of the league unit that Schiano trotted out every year.
Basically; I just find it insane anyone with much football knowledge and appreciation would think Greg Schiano would be an upgrade over Lovie Smith.
