Losing Is Shaming GMC

June 28th, 2015
Losing is starting to unnerve GMC.

Losing is starting to unnerve GMC.

Even though a player may be one of the best in the game, it’s hard to establish a legacy when your team is building a legacy of losing.

Shoot, even though Lee Roy Selmon participated in some of the most godawful teams in NFL history, he eventually played in an NFC title game and four playoff games overall.

The current stud of the Bucs is defensive tackle Gerald McCoy. And aside from his rookie year, when he missed the last three games with an injury, GMC has experienced nothing but losing with the Bucs. That includes a win in the Chase for Jameis, in which the Bucs finished a putrid 2-14, worst in the NFL.

The “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, caught up with GMC recently at a Rays game and documented a story where GMC hung out at DeMarco Murray’s wedding with a bunch of guys who were drafted in the same year as he, but only GMC has yet to take a snap in a playoff game.

In between the toasts and the wedding cake, McCoy looked around the room and realized his accomplished five-year pro career is marred by a gaping hole.

“I was talking to those guys and I asked them, ‘Do you realize that out of all of us, I’m the only one who hasn’t been to the playoffs?’ McCoy said. “That’s just not a good feeling.’’

It is terribly unfair to suggest GMC is a loser. He’s been on bad teams with bad coaches. A football team is made up of, usually, 22 players on the field. As good as GMC wants to be, he can only do so much.

GMC isn’t the reason the Bucs drafted the likes of sackless Kyle Moore, Gaines Adams, Da’Quan Bowers, signed Ghost Johnson or let Michael Bennett walk away for no good reason.

GMC isn’t the reason the Bucs let Darrelle Revis walk away. He isn’t the reason the Bucs signed Josh McClown and Anthony Collins. He didn’t hire Raheem Morris (though Raheem’s 2010 season in retrospect may have been one of the best coaching jobs in the NFL in recent years).

Lee Roy Selmon built a legacy, in part, on turning around a rotten franchise. Same with GMC’s confidante Warren Sapp, who got a ring. Whether GMC will be remembered in the same breath as Hall of Famers Selmon or Sapp will be determined by how well the team does.

I feel sorry for GMC because he’s a very good player…and I have to admit that he turned out to be better than I expected him to be when we drafted him…that said, the losing is bigger than him…the Bucs have a sad history; I did the math…We basically have to average 10 wins per season for the next 15 years just to get our franchise W/L record back to .500…Historically the Bucs have pretty much always been good defensively (out of necessity)…the reoccurring theme in all of the loses is without a doubt bad QB play…

For the record, I believe in L&L…Imho last season was a classic example of having to take a step back before moving forward…the silver-lining in a disappointing season was landing “America’s QB” Jameis WINSton…Having JW3 on board along with Dirk Koetter will make GMC and the rest of the defenses job a lot easier…not being on the field 50 mins a game every Sunday should keep the defense fresh for 1…especially when we play at home in all of this heat and humidity…If our offense can duplicate what the Falcons offense did under Koetter GMC will be making his playoff debut “Sooner” than later…Go Bucs!

Why do you always forget to put Adrian Slowborn in this group. 1st round bust should always be mentioned!!!!

    Waiting for Ray Rice….

Realist never fails to disappoint. 🙂

It’s why Joe cherishes Realist’s views.

  5. Cannon Fire! Says:

Sapp always produced, regardless of the team. So did Ronde, Brooks and Lynch. GMC is overrated, he needs strong teammates to help him.

  6. The Real Malloy Says:

i dont put Clayborn in the same class as Moore, Adams, Bowers and all those guys. He had 7.5 sacks in a season and blew his knee out the next year. He may be damaged goods, but I wouldnt call him a 1st round bust…

  7. Buc-A-New Says:

If something big doesn’t change we are soon going to have to talk about Greg Schiano as being a better coach than Lovie.

  8. SteveK Says:

I’m with you, Joe, The Buc Realist is the sh!t!!!

  9. LakelandBuc Says:

I’m not knocking GMC but people try to compare him to Warren Sapp, i’m sorry but I don’t see the comparison. GMC has never played the kind of football that Warren Sapp played, he has never dominated a game like Warren Sapp did. Warren Sapp made the players around him better,Sapp was a complete football player, never took a play off. h

  10. pete Says:

If Schiano were not replaced, the Bucs would have been much better last year.
That said, Bucs must stick with Lovie!

Good! Get mad son get mad it’s long overdue!!!

Warren Sapp made the players around him better,Sapp was a complete football player. He never took a play off, never had a bad game he was a force to be reckon with. Anytime Brooks, Barber, Jackson, Lynch or whoever got a turnover, you could bet that Sapp was going to put a lick on a O-Lineman or QB. GMC don’t have that nastiness that Sapp had,he’s too nice of a guy to be a Down Lineman, you can’t be a gentlemen in the trenches, you gotta be ferocious, mean, dirty. I don’t see it in GMC, in order for the Bucs to change their losing ways, GMC gotta step his game up in the trenches.

Buc-A- New, There’s a few rookies in NFL Camps from Lakeland. Darryl Roberts with New England Patriots, Quayshawn Nealy with the Seattle Seahawks. Jarred Haggins, Detriot Lions. All three of them were teammates at Lakeland High.

  21. HawaiianBuc Says:

GMC isn’t going to dominate a game the way Sapp did until he has some help on the edge. If there is no pressure from the edge, a DT is easy to avoid. We have rarely had an end that can even keep contain, much less actually sack the QB. Not to mention that he hasn’t exactly had the Seattle secondary behind him, nor has he had the most fantastic coaching staff throughout his career. Sapp always had guys around him that could play, and he had a pretty damn good coaching staff as well. There are so many variables when comparing players on different teams, and in different eras. I feel more than confident that if we could just get some at least average NFL talent around him, he would display the dominance that so many of you expect. The fact that the players and coaches put him in the top 30 players in the league says a helluva lot for the kind of player he is.

  22. WS99 Says:

Ridiculous beyond belief but if he’s our best pass rusher then why not let him rush from the edge. Smith, Melton, mcdonald, McCoy. Lol unorthodox I get it but it might just work.

  23. WS99 Says:

    What’s up buc

  24. Buc-A-New Says:

Hey DB……..You know that it is you that is up man. Some of us have to Rep no matter where we are at.. I wish I was still in the FLA so I could help but Alas…………so far away. Hope you and yours are great.

  25. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @WS99,

I don’t know if he has the body to do that, nor does he have the speed. However, he’d still probably be our second best DE. That’s kinda sad.

  26. Buc-A-New Says:

If you are still around DB I must go.. 10:20 here……….Late there. Lol.
    Go BUCS!!!!
