Dominik: Bucs Passed On Two Trades For Glennon

Former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik co-hosted Late Hits on SiriusXM NFL Radio last night and talked about one of his favorite quarterbacks, 25-year-old Glennon, Tampa Bay’s 2013 third-round pick.
A listener called in to discuss the Jets swinging a trade for Glennon, and Dominik explained why he’s sure there is no trade market for Glennon — because the Bucs are slamming doors on eager partners.
Dominik went out of his way to say he has no inside knowledge on the situation from the Buccaneers, but Dominik made it clear he’s been talking to others around the NFL.
“I don’t think you can get Mike Glennon out,” Dominik said last night. “In fact, I know a couple of clubs actually tried to call and trade for him and [the Bucs] said, No.”
“For him, it’s going to be about how he plays in the preseason and continue to build on what he can actually do, and wait for his opportunity when that comes when he becomes an unrestricted free agent and support [Jameis Winston], which I know Mike will do. Mike’s a phenomenal teammate. He’s a better leader than people realize. He’s a better athlete than people realize. And I think he’ll handle this situation as you’d want him to. And I’m sure he’s going to sit there and say, ‘Look, I just gotta make it one more year and I’ll go get a shot and see what I can actually can do in this league. And right now I’m going to support Jameis Winston and his opportunity because he’s the No. 1 pick.'”
Dominik also spoke with certainty when he said he’s sure Dirk Koetter played a major role in Glennon’s current status with the Bucs.
So what kind of deals were on the table for Glennon?
That’s a great question. In a league that had teams fighting for the right to pay dreadful Josh McCown $5 million a year and let him start, Joe suspects the Bucs had some solid draft picks on the table.

the bucs might regret leaving those picks on the table when he walks next year. it’ made sense to keep glennon as a backup I understand that but in a rebuilding team and a player who is not in the future plans both Martin and Glennon could have brought in a 5 or 6 rounders to develop for future now both Martin and Glennon walk away with no compensation next year. It was abundantly clear that Glennon was not in the teams plans so get something for him.

For Glennon’s career to take off, he must get away from Lovie. I am sure MG8 is scratching the walls counting the day until free-agency!

It made good ‘football’ sense to keep him, but when his rookie contract is up, they will get nothing. That means they will need to get another decent QB behind Winston.
Yea, Joe, if teams were willing to shell out $5mil for McCown, I can only imagine what the Bucs were offered for Glennon.

Mark Dominick is a complete moron!!! I don’t care how much you like mike glennon you wont like him enough to shut the door on getting any kind of compensation for him but instead just let him walk in free agency but this is what I come to expect from a gm with such a losing record and mentality. Personally at what glennon is being paid i would hold out for a high draft pick also because you lose out on the security. if aaron rodgers, tony romo or peyton manning go down what happens to those teams? you have to pay us for compromising out newfound depth at quarterback and the draft picks being offered cant be worth it

I fail to understand this at all. It’s a given Winston will be the starter (for those few remaining members of the MGM who think otherwise, plz read no further). Assuming that, MG8 as a backup is easily replaceable with a vet FA. So why not trade him if it’s a decent draft pick and draft a good young player??
Given the lack of QBs out there it’s hard for me to believe the Bucs weren’t offered at least a 4th rd pick. I would be surprised at anything higher as Glennon would be a one year rental, but would give the team that trades for him a good chance to keep him if he warrants it.

If the reason the bucs haven’t traded glennon is his cost as a backup has more value then a 3rd round pick i’d be furious but I suspect licht is smart enough to know his value will go up in season or closer to the trade deadline this year but you cant trade the guy in his contract year that’s too late cuz he has to agree to sign an extension at the point with any trade partner

Tmaxcon, you are wrong, as usual.
Although Martin will indeed become a Free Agent next year, Glennon will be an Restricted Free Agent.
Check Wikepedia to “learn” the distinction. They hide information like that all over the internet.
Compensation for a RFA is determined by the amount of money the team sings the player for.
With the going rate for serviceable QB’s being in the millions in the NFL, the Bucs would almost be guaranteed a No. 2 and even a Np. 1 if a team seeks t sign him.
I hate having to explain things to you like you were a child but then again maybe you are.
You are just so wrong about so many things.
As for Martin, although I like him, he isn’t well sought after right now so I doubt if he is even trade bait.

Ya i’m not surprised they got offers, but I’m also not surprised GLennon is still here. Unless they were enamored by a trade (and i can’t picture anything better than a 6th rd pick), there was no way they were going to pigeon hole themselves w a rookie and some Savage-, Flynn-like backup. Still shocked they didn’t bring in a vet QB tho, you gotta think they wanted that roster spot elsewhere

Don’t forget that many injuries will happen before training camps THROUGHOUT THE LEAGUE. When another team’s starting QB blows a knee then MG8’s trade Value will skyrocket! Yes it is a gamble that we get nothing for him after this year, but keeping him not only secures a competent backup, but also dangles him to the league as injuries start happening.

glennon is not some big rising star. there are average starting quarterbacks in the nfl: andy Dalton, ryan tannehill, sam Bradford, nick foles and so on so this means glennon is below average. a team would be doing us a favor just as much as some team in desperate need of a quarterback, i’d even go as far as packaging glennon and a low risk draft pick for some starting defensive player on another team maybe safety or some proven offensive lineman

I’m more comfortable knowing that if God’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, is somehow miraculously wounded by a mere mortal defender, that we have Glennon as backup. He would be solid off the bench and our chances of winning could be slimmer but they wouldn’t fly out the window. Plus if another QB is injured before Week 8 there is always the possibility of a trade.

TEAMS were not willing to shell out $5 million. You can start with the worst team in football last year…the Bucs who weren’t willing to part with that kind of money even though Josh McCown was a class act and gave it his best. His best simply sucks.
Then look at the team that signed him!!! A team with a QB situation that now closely resembles ours from last year. A 2nd year draft pick that apparently is so shaky the Brownies feel the need for McCown.
This says two things to me. First “servicable”NFL QB’s are hard to find. Not just franchise QB’s but simply competent QB’s who won’t cost your team games are HARD to find. I think while not a franchise QB Glennon is a competent NFL professional when given the tools.
Second…TEAMS didn’t want McCown…it was the freaking Browns!!!!

Mike Glennon will be traded in 2016 you can bet the farm on it, the problem with Glennon is the fact that he’s terrible in preseason games.He had every chance in the world to beat out Josh Freeman and Josh McCown during the preseason but he never got it done. Glennon don’t make the wow throws that head coaches wanna see from their QB’S. It takes those throws to win in the NFL unless you’re a game manager, few teams have the squad that require a game manager. Most teams are searching for that young gunslinger who can put points on the board, and that don’t fit Glennon arm or profile.

good for him. he deserves a real shot with a real head coach. if he had koetter last year this team would not have been picking first. and he will probably have a better career than the dirt bag rookie.

Mike Glennon is the best QB on the roster. We will need him and resign him. I wouldn’t be surprised is he ends up being the starter.

They should extend his contract with him signing under the conditions of coarse that he get’s a chance to start and play this season. If they give him that shot I’m sure he will sigh an extension then trade him next season. If he lights it up then hell start him next season too why the hell not. This kids got the ability to put some points on the board. Just never had the tools from coaching to get the job done. I’m so sick of waiting for the season to start holy hell…

Why so much debate over a back up. The reason the local media and fans don’t think much of Glennon is because we saw him up close for every game he’s played at this level. His two worst traits are 1) he plays scared. He is scared to take chances and therefore checks down almost every passing play. 2) he is terribly inaccurate with deep balls. Almost all of his deep passes are under thrown and/or off target by a good 5 yards. If you pull up his stats they are still among the worst 5% of starting QBs but the low int rate makes him look better than he is.

MG8 is still with the Bucs because of $546,094. I would bet the highest draft pick offered for a trade was a 6th rounder. MG8 will show off his skills in Koetter’s new offense this preseason then the team will wait for someone to make an offer. I would take a starting RB, DE or Safety, in that order over a draft pick (unless 2nd round or higher). Hope he gets a pad for his best friend again. Wood.
