“Dude, I found this mom and pop meat shop in south Tampa that has a beautiful New York strip. Now where can we find a grill?”

The Buccaneers grinded out anther underwear football practice today under broiling conditions at One Buc Palace.

The two-hour session was open for Joe and various sweaty media types. Your need-to-know is below.

* Some Bucs coach (Lovie?) must have hijacked the tunes today because the air around the One Buc Palace neighborhood was filled with 1970s jazz/funk. It had some of the forty-something reporters moving to the music in their seats. The songs were certainly not of the same demographic as the players, not even barbecue pitmaster Logan Mankins.

*Wide receiver Robert Herron was wearing a floppy hat, as was fifth-round rookie receiver Kenny Bell. Injuries don’t have to be disclosed this time of year, and Lovie Smith won’t share. For you lunatic bottom-of-the-roster junkies, rookies Antoine Everett (O-line) and Chris Hackett (safety) weren’t playing, either.

*The cover skills of Sterling Moore look razor sharp.

*Austin Seferian-Jenkins was seen in an animated coaching discussion with tight ends coach Jon Embree, one initiated by ASJ. And whaddya know, the first play of 11-on-11 work is a pass from Jameis Winston to ASJ seconds later.

*Rookie tryout player Adam Humphries, a 5-11 wideout from Clemson, continues to shine. Great catch with Moore all over him. Mike Glennon on the 10-yard throw.

*Whoa! Glennon has pass batted down at the line by 6-3, rookie camp meat defensive end Jamal Young. How does that happen to a 6-7 QB?

*Veteran DE Lawrence Sidbury gets hefty praise for blocking during a kick return period.

*Jameis throws a fastball to WR Tavarres King. Too hard. No catch. That’s no way to treat the guy that got you here.

*Red zone work begins, and man, Jameis gets rid of the ball quickly, using that 95 mph closer fastball. But Jameis was not accurate through much of this session. Too high to Brandon Myers, but if Manute Bol was in the back of the end one, he may have caught it. Sadly, Bol is not on the roster. There was also a bad throw in corner of end zone to Vincent Jackson.

*Bradley McDougald with a pass breakup on Myers.

*Nice one-hand catch by rookie running back hopeful Dominique Brown.

*Lots of first- and third-team reps for Jameis today. Busy day.

*Danny Lansanah had three pass breakups in a short span against Glennon and Winston, with the first-team defense. The guy was giving up his body and masterful in tipping balls. All three Lansanah tips were picked. Shouts of “Three, Danny!” came from the Bucs sideline on the last one.

*Drop! Fan favorite Luke Stocker from Glennon. The ball was right in his breadbasket along the left sideline.

*Jameis throws a laser over the middle to Russell Shepard, who had to slow down a bit to catch the pass but it hit him right in the hands.

*Odd throwaway by Jameis before whistle was blown but some had given up on play, typical after a passing play goes too long. Perhaps a coach yelled play dead, but Jameis throwaway was picked by Johnthan Banks.

*Drop! Tavarres King from Glennon.

*Drop! Bobby Rainey on checkdown.

*Drop! Myers from Winston.

*Pick! Mike Jenkins after miscommunication from QB Seth Lobato and WR Rannell Hall

*Pick! Isaiah Frye thieves Glennon bad throw into double coverage.

*Pick! Jameis throws to safety D.J Swearinger. No offensive jersey nearby.

*Diving grab, a full lay-out by Luke Stocker from Jameis. Look for that one on Buccaneers.com later. Jameis comes back to Stocker a few snaps later.

*Joe has reported that Lovie is really involved in practices this year and today was the same. At one point early in practice, Joe noticed Lovie running into a defensive huddle and demonstratively encouraging the defense. Then he jogged away. That’s about the most passion that Joe has seen the laid-back Bucs leader display.

* Never in Joe’s life did he ever expect to hear Barry White at a football practice. Joe didn’t see any cheerleaders around, so Joe isn’t sure what the purpose was of playing White. Did the coaching staff want the players to become amorous with the football? Odd.

* Quarterback of the past and quarterback of the future but not the quarterback of the present, Mike Glennon, is working mostly with the second team today.

* The Commodores’ famous “She’s a Brick House” has people’s attention.

* Players getting chippy and seem to want to hit. After a nondescript pass play, defensive backs begin shoving wide receivers after a play ends out of bounds.

* Michael Jackson’s “Rock with You,” is, well, calming.

* Something Joe noticed on video from the team’s website and saw today: While defensive backs can’t touch receivers, whenever a receiver catches a pass and runs toward a defensive back, it appears the defensive backs, in frustration, are shadow boxing, taking a swing at the receivers. But no. It is practicing punching the ball out. Whenever the receivers come near a defensive back, the defenders take a swing at the ball, careful to make sure they are not close to landing a punch.

* Hall and Oates? Joe wants to throw up.

  4. Buccfan37 Says:

Sounds like it’s too damn hot out there to accomplish much. That’s like brutal torture and sweating to the oldies. I was in the thrift store and they were playing Hall and Oates “Rich Girl”, I guess trying to make the women spend their money.

  5. Big Irish Says:

    What? No Led Zeppelin!?!

I wasn’t a big Hall and Oats fan until I saw “She’s out of my League.” Now I jam out like a teenager when I hear “Kiss on My List”

  12. Pickgrin Says:

“The cover skills of Sterling Moore look razor sharp.”

That certainly is good to hear. Leonard Johnson looked pretty lost out there last year. I had a feeling Moore was going to be one of our better off-season pick ups this year.

  13. Ray Rice Says:

    @BuccaneEric75

Shane Falco > Mike Glennon LOL

  14. teacherman777 Says:

i like the DB depth this year!

Verner, Banks, Jenkins, Sterling Moore, Isiah Frey, Leonard Johnson

Thats more like it! I’ve always said, and Big Joe has liked my thinking. Leonard Johnson is a great #6 CB but a poor #3 CB. He will push everybody in front of him. He will make sure nobody in front of him gets too cozy. And he will continue to improve every year. I love Leonard. He balls out on special teams. And he looks stronger and faster every season.

Sterling Moore and Mike Jenkins, regardless of what Joe thinks, are decent 3 and 4 corners. I mean, Mike Jenkins will play for his life this season.

Even our safeties look 4 deep.

I am very happy with our DB’s.

But our O-line?? Man. Love is a gambler.

  15. America's Bucs Fan Says:

Chip Carter said that Jameis threw multiple picks today and wasn’t sharp. Funny that Joe didn’t mention that

  16. OneLove Says:

Come on Joseph!! My Friends wonder why I call you all of the time, what can I say? I don’t feel the need to give such secrets away. You think maybe I need help. Nah, I know that i’m right. I’m just better off not listening to friends advice. When they insist on knowing my bliss, I tell them this. When they want to know what the reason is, I only smile when I lie then I tell them why!

Because your kiss, your kiss is on my list, Because your kiss, your kiss I cant resist, Because your kiss is what I miss when I turn out the liiiiiiiight!

“It’s as simple as that” – Coach Smith

  17. Brandon Says:

Hall and Oates is the only group I look back on fondly. Commodore, meh, the rest, blech.

Hall and Oates is the only group I look back on fondly.

LOL – What does that say about your musical taste?
Lets see – Zeppelin, Floyd, Beatles, Hendrix, Stones, Doors, Rush, Van Halen….. Yea I never liked much of that. But Hall and Oates – now THAT was a band….
    Ahahahahahahahaha

  19. MadMax Says:

Like I said in another thread, expect to be surprised by Adam Humphries. The Clemson guys deep into football like me love the guy. He fights for every inch. But he did fumble now and then while fighting, so he’ll have to fix that.

  20. MadMax Says:

70’s and 80’s…..damn good music era….glad I grew up as a kid then!!! Dont get me wrong, theres still some good music currently, but you have to search for it. My new fav is “Muse”…..Psycho, Dead Inside (lyric vid 😀 ) Super massive black hole…..

  21. Clodhopper Says:

Haha Pickgrin sounding like good ol Joe Dirt.

“Hell no, man I don’t listen to that crap! I’m a rocker, dude through and through. Here’s my favorite bands: AC/DC, Van Halen, not Van Hagar, Skynyrd, Def Lep.”

  22. Architek Says:

I love Hall &Oates thank you very much!

  23. BucsFan85 Says:

*Jameis throws a fastball to WR Tavarres King. Too hard. No catch. That’s no way to treat the guy that got you here.

Haha Joe loves to bring this up! LOL

  24. Joe Says:

@America’s Buc Fan — Joe detailed that right in this post. Check your reading skills.

  25. Joe Says:

    ABF:

Chip Carter wasn’t even out at One Buc Palace. smh

  26. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I still enjoy that music but I’m an oldie myself Hall and Oates finally inducted into the RR Hall of Fame last year. They were one of the most successful duos of all time if you go by chart position, record sales, and number of hits.

Now if they drag out ABBA music then I’ll be concerned! Not that I don’t actually enjoy ABBA but I gotta confess it is some of the wussiest music around.

Now if we gotta go with something demographically appropriate for the players I vote for Bruno Mars Uptown Funk….that song MOVES me….and I also love PitBull and NeYo’s “Time of my life”.

  27. LutzBuczFan Says:

I love jazz funk. The Bucs need some swagger.

  28. Garett Says:

Hey Joe, why don’t you lay off of “America’s 70’s-80’s pop duo” Hall & Oates, huh?

Oh, also, good football notes. Keep em coming!

  29. madmax Says:

@St Pete, loving uptown funk too….first heard it 2 months ago

  30. MadMax Says:

I also enjoy my heavy side…LAMB OF GOD, SLAYER, DISTURBED, and little known Suicide Silence (you only live once) luv that song and vid
