Jameis “The Perfect Fit”

June 4th, 2015
Lovie talks about "America's Quarterback." .

Lovie talks about “America’s Quarterback.”

Yes, it is June, and yes, Lovie Smith is still being drilled about the draft.

There are still some out there wondering why the Bucs didn’t pass on “America’s Quarterback,” Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston. Can you imagine?

That came up when Lovie recently appeared on something called “Talk of Fame Sports Network.” In the clip of Lovie’s interview, the host was not identified but it sounded like Clark Judge.

Anyway, Lovie was asked what “tipped the scales” and made Jameis more attractive than Marcus Mariota, if one can believe such a question could be asked. Lovie didn’t hold back.

“For us, it was just more about what we like,” Lovie said. “Great leader. You hear that term ‘leadership’ thrown around but if you are around Jameis a little bit, you can kind of see his teammates believe in him. He has a lot of confidence in himself and I think as a quarterback, a guy people look to every play, guys want to know, ‘Hey, it will be OK. We can do this.’ That’s what you get from Jameis right away.

“I think to be a leader at the quarterback positon, you need to feel comfortable talking and being out in front. He has that. I think the way you judge great quarterbacks a little bit is, can they throw the football? Jameis Winston can make all of the throws. We feel like he is accurate. He had a couple of interceptions, more than we would like last year, but we think he can make all of the throws which we want. And you look at his record, he has won a lot of football games.

“In the end, he was the perfect fit for us.”

No mincing of words there, huh? But Joe still can’t get over that people, yes, the haters of Jameis, cannot fathom how the Bucs drafted him. And this question is still being asked a month after the draft.

Joe is just happy there is an open-for-media practice at OTAs at One Buc Palace today. Yes, Joe will be there, naturally, and you can expect a Twitter blackout while practice is in session.

I was a doubter in Both QBs. JW is our QB now and Im 100% behind him like any true fan should be. “Haters” need to find another team to support.
PS Still not liking the “America’s QB” thing.

  2. The Real Malloy Says:

    Im with Buc-A-New….

I was a Mariota supporter but Jameis is our QB and i am 1000 percent behind him.

I’m not in love with the “Americas QB” thing, simply because most of America hasn’t been won over by Jameis yet (they will). I am a fan of America’s Barbecue Master though!

  3. Casual Observer Says:

I think Winston was the best pick for the Bucs. And he looks better every day. Looks like a great fit with more leadership than most had seen. But Mariota likely will become a fine QB for the Titans too. What’s the issue?

  4. bucs4lyfe Says:

lol but he still has to compete with mike glennon hahaha oook Cummings. jameis will be on display for the media, they aren’t coming out to see freaking mike glennon. if he’s taking first team reps for the media he’s starting day one

  5. J Says:

I am more disappointed in the reach at 2 than the drafting of Winston

  6. Waterboy Says:

I agree with Lovie’s statement. Marcus Mariota never really gave me a great impression about his confidence level or a sense that he’s someone that grow men would believe in and follow. It’s almost as if he realizes his limitations and that he is a product of the system that they run at Oregon. The only way he’ll be able to have success with his leadership style is if he’s great on the field. If he struggles early and for a fairly extended period of time I could see other guys losing confidence in him real quick. Another question is how would he handle the adversity of dealing disgruntled fans and negative media.

  7. Buccfan37 Says:

Winston will be our winning QB, all signs point to it and I’ll believe it more when I see it happen. Kick it off already, I’m tired of waiting.

  8. tmaxcon Says:

There is zero competition between America’s Heartless Backup #8 and America’s Quarterback Jameis winston.

Read lovies quote if that is not a direct shot at mike glennon’s leadership or lack of leadership.

Winston is the perfect fit. This team has needed a guy with his heart and passion for years. I can’t wait to watch Evans and Winston jawing at some of these lifeless vets on the side lines during games. Evans demonstrated some of that last year. I like that he was angry with losing and pissed off. anger can be a great motivator…

  9. R.O. Says:

I’ve always been in the draft JW camp. But the children who continually say “Haters” can do this or that, grow up. Just because someone disagrees doesn’t mean they’re a Hater. Children now just do not know how to handle critisicism in a contstructive manner. Just as people do not know how to criticize in a coherent way.

  10. Supersam Says:

A few interceptions Lovie? Really? That’s putting it lightly.

  11. David Says:

@Supersam, are we still doing this? Quick name me one QB that came from a spread system that had alot of interceptions. Didn’t think so.

  12. bucs4lyfe Says:

    @supersam

I really wish you would take a constipated approach to posting and hold SOME of that ish in!!!!

go back and look at Andrew lucks rookie number. 18 interceptions 23 touchdowns and a horrible 54% completion percentage then think about Andrew luck again….you still knew he was going to be one of the best in the league didn’t you?

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“What tipped the scales” has generated a manufacured article….dragging up haters so we can defend Winston when no real defense is needed….

Let’s circle the wagons when it’s called for….please….

  14. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

I applaud the people who didn’t want Winston drafted and were able to let it go, and get behind the starting QB of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

To those of you still pining for Mariota or someone besides Jameis, I’m amused at you. I find you funny.

  15. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

    R. O., it seems you don’t know what a hater is. It’s not someone who has a difference of opinion, or even offers criticism. It’s those who casts aspersions and imagine only the worst in someone. They call hateful names, exaggerate and take circumstances out of context to score imaginary justifications. They never recognize the good characteristics of their object of hate, only their biased and venomous perspective. There are plenty that frequent this site and others – although not so many as before the draft.

As to ‘America’s Quarterback’, I like it. Not because he’s earned it on the Pro field, but because it recognizes the enormous amount of attention that’s been focused on him, warranted or not. Lots of hate, lots of love, lots of attention. And it’s not going away anytime soon.

  16. Buc since '74 Says:

I too applaud those of you that we’re in the Mariota camp or where anti Winston prior to the draft that have accepted him and are behind him as the QB of your team. You don’t have to like him as a person but you should pull for him to be successful as the leader of your team. And for not liking him as a person, perhaps you should hold your judgement until you’ve actually met the kid personally. What you hear on the news is all about ratings – and what sells the most beside sex? Bad news and fear. As an example – would you click on an article that said Johnny Boozer – whoops – football had a great day at camp, or would you click on the Johnny flipped out article? Sell, sell, sell…. And most opinions of Jameis came straight from BSPN – who should apologize to Jameis IMHO.

  17. Buc since '74 Says:

    well – I clearly didn’t proof read that… ^^^ were…

  19. Pick6 Says:

Mariota just did not strike me as a QB with the charisma to lead a fan base and team out of the doldrums. I’m not guaranteeing JW will do that for the bucs, but in terms of how he comes across, he certainly seems to have the makeup to be that firestarter that every consistently excellent team has

  20. BlogTalkFootball Says:

America’s QB is the perfect tongue in cheek moniker for the man who has held America’s attention in the media since before the end of the 2014 season. Too many of you mistake Joe’s reference as reverence.
