Pamphile And Edwards Take Center Stage
May 28th, 2015Yes, your Buccaneers’ first team left tackle right now in spring practice is second-year man Kevin Pamphile. The right guard with the first unit is fellow 2014 fifth-round pick Kadeem Edwards.
Joe dubbed these two “milk cartons” last season.
But that label might need to be retired.
Lovie Smith said after practice today that Pamphile and Edwards have their roles largely because they were here last year and are coming along. (Sheesh, what an ugly indictment of last year’s 16-game starter at right guard, Patrick Omameh.)
But Bucs fans know Tampa Bay spent two second-round picks this month to draft left tackle Donovan Smith out of Penn State, and Division III start Ali Marpet to play guard. So the intrigue grows.
Lovie talked about the virtues of competition and didn’t give any detail on the performances of Pamphile and Edwards, who did not take a regular season snap last year and struggled in preseason. But Lovie did note that Marpet has a hamstring tweak.
As you can see in Joe’s photo above, Pamphile spent plenty of time with barbecue-yearning left guard Logan Mankins. And Lovie praised Mankins for how he’s seized of a leadership role.
Joe thought Pamphile moved well today in the underwear football session. Edwards seems to be more of a project.
Joe really doesn’t know what to make of the Bucs’ O-line. But Joe does expect Titans defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau to dump the kitchen sink on them on opening day.

@Joe – Hey Joe, didn’t Pamphile play pretty well last year when he got significant playing time towards the end of the season?

I was a first time season ticket buyer last year and was not a happy camper. I wound up renewing for this year, and to be honest I can’t go through another season of depression like last year. They need to get this offensive line on track otherwise I can’t see shelling out that kind of money for a third year in a row.

If both Pamhile and Edwards can develop into solid starters (not all pro) we will be in great shape for years to come… Then if the development of Smith and Marpet is positive we are possibly looking at the best offensive line we have had in a looooong time…

I like it. Make Smith and Marpet earn it. If they want to start on opening day, they got to fight for it. They have to show the team they want it, no, need it! They need to go every snap, from ota, to camp, to preseason like its their last day in the league! Then take that hard work and effort thats been mounting all summer and give it full force to the Titans week one! After the last two seasons, I want to see my Bucs ready to play some f#ing football! And it all starts now!

It’s great news if our two draft picks from last year are ready to play. Would give me a tiny bit of faith in O-line coach Warhop.
But still depending on inexperienced O-line , to protect this Franchises most valuable asset in 40 years.
It’s a mistake.
Get A decent Experienced LT and RG in here. They can be older, as we want to rotate young guys in as often as we can.
But on 3rd and 15, against JJ watts- do you feel good about two rookies protecting Jameis?
I think Smith and Marpet may be able to do it. Then the vets supply guidance and depth.
It’s just the safe move- to protect this teams future for the next 15 years.
Don’t make Jameis gun shy his first year.

I would expect the same line from last year to play better…..still below average but better than last year under Koetter. A good OC will help everybody. It still hurts that it’s going to be a first year offense but from what I have seen, Winston looks like he get’s the most out of everybody around him. I think by a little past the halfway point of the season we will start to see some real explosiveness out of this teams offense. Hopefully next season and the season after Koetter sticks around.

We need to get Pamphile and Edwards going as well as the other young guys on the line, Mankins and Dotson are getting old, this maybe Mankins last year in Tampa.

“Manzell yearning Joe,” needs to get off that tired, boring BBQ reference. Or did you forget about your love for Manzell, Joe.

Rookie offensive linemen can’t play. Second year guys are only incrementally better. Just look at the OLmen drafted top 5 recently. They’re dissapointments until year three. The good franchises bring in one OL guy that fits their system every year. If he doesn’t pan out after three years, they move on. Hanging your hat on four draft picks in two years is flawed. If you don’t follow this formula, then the drafting becomes necessary, but is doomed to fail.
