“Limit His Ability In The Playbook”

A close friend of Lovie weighs in

Joe did not know a close friend and confidante of Lovie Smith, a guy coming to patrol the sidelines at One Buc Palace this summer, once coached Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.

Joe’s talking about Herm Edwards, the former Bucs assistant and Jets and Chiefs head coach.

Speaking in the BSPN video below, Edwards references coaching Jameis in the “Under Armor All-American game,” an event for high school stars.

Edwards dives into Jameis having “big” help in not one, but two wide receivers, Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, to allow him to do what he does best — throw downfield. And Edwards says that while Jameis is being bombarded with the entire offense right now, look for Lovie to “limit his ability in the playbook,” possibly “slimmed down to 40 percent” available to Jameis early in the season.

Joe agrees that the Bucs want to dial things back for Jameis, but they want to win a game more. If Tampa Bay can’t run the ball and the offensive line is shaky, then Joe would expect new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to get creative. Jobs and lives would be on the line.

No need to worry about JDubb. Jameis is so much of a winner he can win a game of Connect 4 in only 3 moves!

  2. Tiny Tim Says:

I would agree if Jameis was your average rookie, but he is not. He can handle more than 40% of the playbook. Lets hit the ground running. You don’t drive 40mph in a Ferrari, you open that bad boy up!!! FYI…..jameis was MVP for that under armour game I believe.

  3. robert 9 Says:

evans and vjax are not going to beat any DB in a foot race downfield. WTH is herm talking about. seriously, when have you EVER seen jax blow by a DB and outrun him deep?

more like curl routes, slants, over the middle and maybe PA if the run game is clicking.

    let’s not repeat last year.

  4. Yeah It's me! Says:

    Joe ” America’s Arse!”

  5. Joe Says:

Joe is going to have a nugget from John Madden about this very subject tomorrow. Hint: Herm isn’t crazy.

  6. adamant Says:

Robert 9 is once again proving his lack of knowledge. VJax routinely gets behind the coverage for open throws down the field. He pretty much earned his living doing just that in San Diego before coming to Tampa. Granted, last year he showed signs of slowing down, but to ask the question “when have you EVER seen jax blow by a DB?” shows your ignorance. Aren’t you supposed to by a Dolphin fan by now? Go post on their fan sites.

  7. Espo Says:

    @Robert

Several times. The problem is that he doesn’t have the gas to finish the race. Also remember Glennon underthrowing him several times.

  8. robert 9 Says:

he might muscle them @ the line or beat them at the point of attack if their a few yards off the ball….but the most he’ll be open is 10-15 yards, MAYBE 20 yards deeps. the DB will catch up and/or the safety will be all over him by then.

not a pass I consider a deep ball. maybe my definition of deep is different from other men. that’s what the ladies say anyway.

  9. Tiny Tim Says:

What is Robert 9 talking about? Vjax led the league in yards per catch for at least 4 years in a row excluding last year. Evans was beating DBs deep all year. Were you watching the same games as the rest of us?

he’s declined every year, and now he’s a deep threat??? maybe he WAS, but some are showing their lack of knowledge MR ant

  11. biggun Says:

Joe did you say Herm Is coming back to the Bucs sideline to coach?

  12. Gre Says:

Lovie will be the downfall of this team

  13. WS99 Says:

    Rob9

You remember that game in 2013 when he got behind the Falcons safety and made the sick one handed catch for a TD?

  14. Couch Fan Says:

V-Jax and Evans are monsters at the deep ball because they can out jump most DBs. You dont have to be Speedy Gonzales to do that.

  15. Waterboy Says:

    @Robert9
Vincent Jackson has never been considered a burner but throughout his career he has always for some reason been able to stretch the field. I think a combinatIon of age and lack of a QB play is what hurt him the last couple of years. Glennon is good at throwing short to intermediate routes but he doesn’t have good timing in the deep routes. Hopefully Jackson has a little more gas left in the tank to get him by for another couple of years.

  16. WS99 Says:

I think some of you guys need to go back and watch some 2013 highlights. Glennon long to vjax was the theme all year.

  17. bucs4lyfe Says:

so the news about Winston being ahead of all the rookies in the playbook was all smoke and mirrors by joe about America’s quarterback? if he is so advanced and learns so quick why would he be limited? or is that saying herm Edwards knows alittle but not all that much about what the bucs are doing and he’s just guessing

  18. Eric Says:

    Hut-hut, throw to Jackson

    Hut-hut, throw to Evans.

    There’s your playbook.

If they are covered, so what?

  19. WS99 Says:

    Buc4lyfe

Bc lovie only knows 30% of the playbook.

Again winner will win a minimum of 9 games dispite lovie smith n his band of merry pirates

  20. ruggyup Says:

Let’s not forget all the pundits , former coaches, talking heads etc. that Joe loves and has to quote are NOT paid to be nice, honest, sincere, smart, right or wrong. They are paid by the word or by the tv click. Now, as one of you quoted, “Connect 4”.

  21. Buc-A-New Says:

I am one of the few “JW Doubters” left that have very few doubts about what he can do On the Field. I believe he will have a rocky first yr but it will but Studded with Top Ten Highlight plays on “BSPN”
IMO as long as he has grown up we hit a Homerun.

  22. Tom Edrington Says:

When it comes to “limiting ability” last season Lovie was very successful in limiting the team’s ability to win games…….

  23. CLW JB Says:

The god news is the new OC has brought along a rookie QB before, understands the nuances of the NFc South, and has been VERY successful at every stop in his career….the bad news is Thurston Howell’s wife is the HC….and may not let said OC be in control. Only time will tell….

    Lmao!

  25. lurker Says:

jameis christ, american sniper, buccaneer’s savior.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Everybody is talking about Jackson & Evans……but the reason why we failed as an offense is that’s all we had….2 1000 yd recievers.
Look for Koetter to work in screens to Sims….ASJ & Kenny Bell in the slot….

    Now, we’re talkin’

  27. Buc-A-New Says:

Hey TBBF. You and I know that this is the season of long time JW trolls to say ” I told you so”
I am ok with most of it as long as the hashtag…stayoutoftrouble goes with it.

  28. Pat Says:

I like that giggling island comment above. lol. so much as the article title above does not translate into something like…’we do not want to put points on the board (but really want another #1 pick next year)….I’m fine with that.

  29. WS99 Says:

I hear there tape of winston n bell lighting it up at camp. Watch out now.

  30. SOOFIERCE Says:

100% of our playbook is about 50% of Winstons ceiling. I’m imagining JW getting to the last page of the playbook and thinking… This can’t be all of it, right?

  31. Buc-A-New Says:

What up DB!!! Hope you and yours had a great weekend.

  32. Buc-A-New Says:

@ lurker, Why are you so disrespectful with the American Sniper comments?
    Just wondering.

  33. lurker Says:

how is american sniper more disrespectful than america’s quarterback? they are both a play on words.

  34. Buc-A-New Says:

No disrespect sir. But if you have ever had to take a life at 1000 yards, you would be a bit offended by someone calling JW America’s Sniper yesterday. I was one of those

  35. Jim Says:

Jamies can light a fire by rubbing 2 ice cubes together.

  36. Jim Says:

“Sniper” has more than one meaning.

  37. Buc-A-New Says:

I completely agree Jim. However Lurker said it the day before Memorial day and I said that since it is the day before that his comment wasn’t so offensive. He made a point to come and say it again yesterday. There was never an acknowledgement by him that it might be out of bounds to some. Just incessant chattering of the same statement.

  38. Buc1987 Says:

    America’s Sniper!

  39. Buc-A-New Says:

Really 87? As long as we have been ok?

  40. Luther Says:

Being offended by the term “sniper” is just stupid in my opinion. If anything, it is a compliment to Winston even if I don’t actually agree with the comparison. I served in the military and don’t feel it’s disrespect in the slightest.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

    Sounds whiny to me.

    ………………….
Yeah well I have talked to Chris Kyle and Im pretty sure he wouldn’t appreciate that yesterday. Just a slight nod that it may have been uncool to some would be appreciated.

  43. Buc-A-New Says:

If Not then Hey….What the Hell. We are still Bucs Fans

  44. Buc-A-New Says:

    87………..Are you calling me Whiny???????

  45. pick6 Says:

i think we would be in trouble if we tried to put a check on every military term that has leaked into the sports vernacular based on what day it is. centuries of sporting culture have linked the two tightly. is it inappropriate to hear Peyton Manning or any other highly poised QB referenced as a “field general” on memorial day? should we save references of players “battling” for roster spots? if a QB at OTAs threw “a bomb”, should we go grab our thesaurus? are football scouts an insult to military scouts? i’m really curious about the ground rules here

  46. LakelandBuc Says:

I believe the key to our passing game will be ASJ getting one on one with the smaller safety or linebacker, and Charles Sims being free coming out of the backfield.

  47. lurker Says:

no problem with american sniper being used for jameis christ. sorry your feelings are hurt. chris kyle’s book has many stories, some of which are ficticious. and why would he have had a problem with the term american sniper used in a respectable way for our strong-armed, accurate, long distance shooter? according to merriam-webster “First Known Use of SNIPE 1832”.
