An ex-NFL offensive lineman breaks it down
So the Buccaneers have their quarterback, “America’s Quarterback,” Jameis Winston. While he may have damned near been Superman in college, he is now playing against grown-arse men, not children.
Jameis may have the work ethic that is expected of a franchise quarterback, but playing the game is a different matter.
Young Jameis, especially against the opening-day Titans defense led by wily Dick LeBeau, will encounter stuff he’s never seen before, maybe not even on film.
That hasn’t rattled Ross Tucker, the former NFL offensive lineman and Princeton product who currently works for NBC Sports Network and SiriusXM NFL Radio. Tucker believes if all the chatter about Jameis is true, he should be a significant upgrade at quarterback for the Bucs.
“How many times did we hear in the pre-draft process that he came from a pro-style offense and he is more much more NFL ready than Marcus Mariota?” Tucker said. “So you combine that with Vincent Jackson, Mike Evans, Austin Seferian-Jenkins. I think it is certainly reasonable for him to have more touchdowns than interceptions as a rookie.”
Well, Joe would sure like to lump Seferian-Jenkins into the same boat as Evans and Jackson, but Joe can’t go there yet. Joe likes ASJ but to have an he impact must stay out of the tub. Last year, ASJ was riddled with injuries that prevented him from making a dent on the field.
If Jameis is able to throw more touchdowns than picks, that is not bad, especially for a rookie taking over the reins of a 2-14 team. And that sure as hell is an upgrade over turnover-prone Josh McCown, who had more picks (14) than touchdowns (11) and Joe isn’t even factoring in his fumbles. Just turrible football.
Joe is much more concerned about young Jameis staying upright than throwing picks.

I think Jameis will be just fine, and will light up the NFL
The Tampa offense will be far different this year then it was last year.

At times I felt Ross Tucker came across as somewhat sarcastic and pompous in this video. It wasn’t what he said but how he said it. Certain words/sentences were emphasized “How many times” or We heard “every excuse” in the book (regarding Winston’s TD/INT ratio last year etc). I don’t know something about it gives me pause to think where does he really stands on Winston.

Lets keep expectations grounded for sure! I think the Bucs should be realistic and realize that Winston will have his ups and downs but he does have some neat weapons in V Jack & Evans to throw to! Greg Cosell just wrote a nice article about Winston for Yahoo. The guy must read a lot of Joe’s stuff here as he points out how good a fit Koetter and Winston will be in Tampa and draws a lot of analogies between Matt Ryan/Winston and Roddy White&Julio Jones/Evans&VJack but also points out that the OL is still in flux and establishing a running game is key to making the Koetter offense successful as it was when the ATL had a healthy Mike Turner…. Also have to agree with Joe on ASJ as the dude did absolutely next to nothing last season (besides fumbling after the catch); the only productive play he had was followed by that Captain Morgan move that drew a 15 yarder…

This “veteran mentor” stuff is overrated. Coaches teach the players, and if a young player needs another player to help him learn then they need more help than just a “mentor”.

His stats need to be WAY better than Glennon’s. In his first sixteen games, Glennon was 24-11 (TD/INT). Being the first pick of the draft, NFL ready, “America’s QB”, there shouldn’t be any question that Winston will/can put up better numbers.

The only number Jameis has to beat of Glennon’s rookie year is THREE. As in the THREE stinking wins that Glennon had despite all the 19-9 hoopla. I have never seen such a great example of how misleading stats can be when Glennon supporters continiously jam 19-9 down on throats to show their support of a marginal QB. But did he win? Did he make big-time throws down the field when it counted? One game! ONE! Against Pittsburgh last season, other than that Glennon was an easily sackable checkdown artist with below average accuracy, zero mobility and pocket movement, and an average, at best arm. He’s got NOTHING… other than 19-9.

best quarterback than we’ve had since brad Johnson at the very least at best since doug Williams, an offensive coordinator that knows what he’s doing equals winning season….the media is horrible but I guess it good for them when you say the bucs must upgrade the o line in the draft then when they do complain about the qb staying upright and then question whether it’s an upgrade which wouldn’t be bad if it wasn’t based off of the lineman we had on the team last year…concerned with Winston staying upright should be less of a concern than interceptions from a rookie qb. the line will protect a franchise quarterback with skills they respect

I think the success of the defense plays a major part here also. Bucs can’t always be playing from behind or the INT numbers will go up. Best thing for a young QB is a strong running game and you can’t run the ball if you are always trying to play catch-up

INTs have VERY little to do with being ahead/behind. It is ALWAYS about being ‘smart’ with the ball. A rookie gets a ‘pass’ his first year because he must acclimate his instincts to having a shorter time in the pocket (panic) AND a smaller window to throw into. NFL DBs are MUCH faster and ‘recover’ quicker than college QBs are accustomed to. Often, a rookie throws into a window that is closed before the ball crosses the LOS. The good ones learn to judge the window in a new light.
Veteran QBs do not have that excuse. When they throw an INT, it is either a tipped ball (receivers’ fault), desperation (end of game/quarter), or stupidity (often). They should know that taking a sack (or throwing out of bounds) preserves better field position than an INT.

Posted this last night when this article first showed up on my computer, but would not post my comment. ( I assume Joe has the first blog article “ready to go”, and tests it, but then retracts it for the next day. Anyway, as noted by others above as well:
Glennon had 19 TDs and 9 INTs in thirteen games as a rookie.
MG8 has 29 TDs and 15 INTs in 18 games and a quarter.
Those should be good targets for Jameis Winston, “America’s QB” to shoot for.

F#&$ Glennon!!!! Some of you are severely clueless. Who cares what Glennon’s TD/INT ratio is? I have said it once and I will say it again………………It speaks volumes when Glennon’s teammates were texting and calling L & L asking them to pick winston. Obviously to the coaches and players alike Glennon’s TD/INT ratio means squat. You obvious Glennon backers need to wake the f#&$ up. You look and sound completely and utterly ridiculous!!!!

What really impress me about Winston is the fact that he don’t cares about the stats,the only thing that he focus on is the win. Glennon went 19-9 as a rookie because he was afraid to take chances and throw into coverage that’s why his numbers was so good. But how many wins did he get? in order to win in this league a QB cannot hold the ball and wait for a receiver to get open,he cannot be afraid to throw into coverage and most important, he gotta do whatever it takes to get the win.Give me Big Ben and his 22.6 QB rating and his Super Bowl win.

We can expect Mr. Winston to overcome bad oline play, bad offensive play calling, no running game, dropped passes, blown 4th quarter leads. And produce WINS. Anything less and we are still in the same boat America’s Quarterback or not.

First off, I did not say F&$# you, I said F&$# Glennon. Second, if you want to be a fan of a loser QB who won’t be nothing more than a game manager backup QB then that’s your prerogative. Just do not try to sell Buc fans Vienna sausages while telling us it is a steak. True football fans know the difference. I just find you and others like you idiotic for crying for a player his own teammates did not want. FYI….that’s not my “opinion”, that is fact the players lobbied for Winston. My reading comprehension is fine. Anybody that is writing a post that says Winston has to meet Glennon’s TD/INT ratio in his rookie season in order to be considered a success is who I am responding to sir (And that will include you). I went back and re-read ALL of the posts, and NO ONE said that Winston must meet/beat Glennon’s stats in order to be successful. I, for one, no longer need to read his posts. Those are your words sir. Again, F#&$ Glennon. Winston will be judge on Winston. His numbers can look like Peyton Manning’s rookie year where he throws 28 INTs and we are still in a better spot with winston under center. The quicker you learn that the better you will understand football sir.
FYI……For you and RustyRhino…..If winston gets hurt, then you bring in the career back-up and he does his job. Until then, his name should not even touch this website period. He is the freaking back up QB. Only Tampa fans will cry for a back up QB.
