The Bucs will turn to Kadeem Edwards at right guard, if rookie Ali Marpet cannot hack NFL competition early on.
Yes, the Bucs are putting a lot of pressure on “America’s Quarterback,” signal-caller Jameis Winston. Starting a rookie QB, no matter how talented he may be, is always a gamble.
Putting that same rookie behind a shaky offensive line could be the proverbial pulling the pin on a hand grenade.
The Bucs expect to start rookie second-round pick Donovan Smith at left tackle. Just the thought of a rookie left tackle has Joe looking for his chew towel. At right guard, the Bucs hope Division-III product Ali Marpet is starting in his first season.
Joe sure hopes Gerald McCoy, who will battle Marpet in training camp scrimmages, does not take it easy on the rookie. To learn against the best is certainly an advantage for Marpet.
However, if Marpet struggles, the next option is another small school product with zero NFL regular-season experience, Kadeem Edwards. That was the subject of a video mailbag question discussed by Casey Phillips and Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com.
“Neither of these guys will be promised or gifted anything,” Smith said of rookie offensive linemen. “Should be pretty good competition. If they are the talented players [the Bucs] thought they were in the draft, the good money is on them.”
Joe sure hopes so. Remember, Edwards, part of the now famous “Milk Cartons” duo with Kevin Pamphile, spent the second-half of the season on injured reserve with a bad right foot, after the Bucs selected him out of the football factory known as Tennessee State.
So Jameis is looking at the middle of his offensive line to be left guard Logan Mankins, who was a complete shell of his former self last year, Ted Thompson castoff Evan Smith, who never will make people forget Mike Webster, much less Jeremy Zuttah, and one of two guys at right guard that have never taken a snap against competition above the level of Division-IAA.

meh, I think it’s good to get the fresh meat playing time. They should have gotten more reps for last year if possible.

Offensive lineman have the easiest transition to the nfl. second year guys will do better….everyone was wishing the bucs would draft offensive lineman to protect the quarterback so can’t really start crying about inexperience rookies now that we have them
bucs should have been the first team to step up and draft la’el Collins and there would be zero concerns about this offensive line

Dallas has a massive surplus of talent on the OL….of I were the 🙁 of either team something like a 2016 2nd or 3rd rounder for a solid g or t seems like a good trade for both teams

I think will be ok with either one we have Im personally ok with going with smith, mankins, e.smith, marpet, dotson then if it goes wrong then that’s why theyre the coaches

F-it. Lets go to war with these guys. Anythings better than last year, right? I like it. The two 5th rounders from last year and the two 2nd rounders from this year. Sprinkle in a few UDFA’s and a few vets and we got something to build on. Even thou we didn’t see much of K. Pamphile and K. Edwards last year their bios looked good. lol. GO BUCS

Better for me to hope kadeem and pamphile are actually good lineman and weren’t wasted picks, if there are rookies waiting to take your spot but your actually a really good player you become trade bait and i’d rather that then seeing them not make it through camp or waste away on the bench

Kind of reminds me of reading about Davin Joseph kicking then rookie Gerald Mccoys as$ all training camp. I know Mccoy is very rookie friendly but I wish he would bully these kids a bit to toughen them up, especially Ali “Chubs” Marpet from d3.

For the life of me I dont understand why we don’t pick up Davin Joseph. He was healthy enough to start in St Louis last year. He could provide depth and leadership.

What do you want Joe? It is what it is. If you want to build an O-line that will last for 5-10 years you’re going to have to live with the growing pains of young players / draft picks starting young and together. No other way around it. It’s a good thing.
I love that our LT may be a rookie. Because if he works out; that means our franchise LT is only 21 freaking years old.

This is what I don’t get about some of you fans. You jump on the Bucs FA moves but won’t let them build patiently through the draft – where is the common ground???

They will struggle.
Jamies, Ali, Kadeem,Kevin,and Donovan.
All rookies do.
But they have to play, to get better.
Not going to Super Bowl this year.
But will draft a great De next year, and become a playoff contender.
