Yesterday Joe brought you the news that Raheem the Dream has a high goal for Bucs third-year defensive end Gaines Adams: 12 sacks. There’s little question not only is Raheem the Dream pushing Adams, the former first round pick is feeling heat from the fans who many are already throwing around the B-word (“bust”), which may be a bit premature.

Bucs Hall of Famer Lee Roy Selmon, who was at One Buc Palace yesterday for a press conference about him being the first inductee for the Bucs Ring of Honor, and who also spent time at practice yesterday, sympathized with Adams, so writes Tom Balog of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

“Now how does he handle the critique? That’s the next big key,” said Buccaneers Hall of Fame defensive end Lee Roy Selmon. “We all get that (criticism). I got it, too. ‘Oh, you’re not a very good player.’ OK, maybe I need to work at this a little harder.

“Not many can jump in this league and be an instant superstar,” Selmon said.

Selmon went on to say he has had several chats with Adams and he feels Adams has the skills to to succeed.

As Joe stated before, and told Ron Diaz of WDAE-AM 620 last week on the air,  Adams is certainly fast, but he’s a two-trick pony. He has one move to the quarterback, and as a defensive end he’s a helluva pass defender in the flat — but who spends a first round pick on a defensive end because of his pass coverage capabilities?

Joe hopes defensive coordinator Jim Bates, who developed Jason Taylor, will be able to get the most out of Adams. Another factor to keep in mind: The three people responsible for bringing Adams to Tampa Bay (Bruce Almighty, Chucky and Monte Kiffin) are all gone.
