Jameis Winston was a busy man
Jameis Winston was back at his Alabama home recently, preparing to embark on what Bucs fans and the team hopes is a decade or more of service that restores on-field glory.
We can only hope and cross our fingers.
Just before he bolted back to Tampa to begin his professional football career, Winston had one last important stop. That was to a local middle school in Birmingham talk to children, and hopefully, change a life or two.
Winston was at Ossie Ware Mitchell Middle School, reports Edward T. Bowser of AL.com, to impart wisdom among the school kids.
[Winston] asked students how many of them have good grades. Some laughed. He saw it as a teaching moment, encouraging students not to laugh at students making good grades because those students may be president one day.
“Don’t be ashamed about making good grades now,” he said, adding that good grades will lead to scholarships. The Hueytown, Ala. native received a scholarship to play at Florida State University, where he helped the school win a national championship and he was named a Heisman Trophy winner.
“I went to school for free, man!” he said. … He then asked students how many of them wanted to be doctors or work in successful professions. To get there, one has to have good grades, Winston said. He added that having good grades will take one farther in life than having a pretty smile. Education is important and so is studying.
Sounds like something Derrick Brooks or Warrick Dunn or Lovie Smith would say, doesn’t it?

Surprised that there isn’t someone trying to pass off him giving some of the kids a high five as him hitting the kids or suggesting that him saying “pretty smile” while looking at a particular student meant that he was making a suggestive remark to a minor.
You guys are missing golden opportunities to take completely innocuous behavior and spin it in to this guy being a bad person.

At least he is speaking from experience. Maybe a few of those kids will listen and act on that information coming from Jameis Winston the Professional football player. Way to Go Jameis !!

the better he plays the more his words will hit home with those kids…laughing when asked if you have good grades, sounds like they have a headstart on immaturity. it’s amazing how many kids out there are embarrassed by having good grades and could have them but do things to make themselves look worse than they are just to look cool

@bucs4lyfe – It doesn’t stop with kids. Try being an up and comer in an organisation and showing any kind of initiative among your peers when they have all settled in a a comfortable and uniform level of mediocrity. It’s a lot easier to try to manipulate people to come down to your level rather than pushing yourself and lifting yourself up to their level. As long as you don’t try you can’t fail.

I disagree!!! some people do have that infectious personality and are noticed simply by walking into a room, if your that type of person like Winston for example I think it’s easier to influence people to want to be more like you. everyone is different and Winston’s stupid off field issues are specific to him….nfl players aren’t damn penguins. who the hell looks at the negative things Winston did and what he’s going through in the media and says I wanna be like that, that’s just stupid. these same people he influences in a positive way probably laugh and say that was dumb. everyone is their own person and wont imitate stealing crab legs and things like that. what about his academic achievements I think that plays more of a part in everyday people, nfl and nba players are not the majority of the world

@Bucs4lyfe – I may be misunderstanding the point you were getting at, so please correct me if I misread your intended meaning, but I think we’re talking about loosely related but largely different things. My post was more of a commentary on society and human nature as a whole. I don’t put much stock in the actual influence that a kid’s interaction with a professional athlete has on how they develop as a person or how they let the athlete hero worship shape the decisions they make.

When we traded up to draft Josh Freeman, I always felt like that was a homer pick by Raheem and not truly warranted. Even when Josh showed games of brilliance, I just never felt excited about the long term. Even though I preferred Mariota (that’s the last time I’m using that disclaimer), I am truly excited, not just about this year, but for our future. Can you imagine a draft that we are not looking for a franchise qb? I can’t imagine what it will be like. I look forward to finding out. As far as predictions for next season. I predict we will not have a top 10 pick next draft. That’s a good start. Go Bucs!

I don’t doubt that people who’s first exposure to Jameis was through national media coverage might think that. The truth is he’s been doing charity work for a long time in Tallahassee. And, like the video of him greeting rookies, he was same exact way in Tallahassee, before he was even starting games. That’s his nature.
I’m glad people will get to actually see the other side of the coin, not just reporting that’s based on a predetermined narrative.

So how long have you known Jameis? Were you guys roommates or something? You sure do seem to know his character, so I’m only assuming that you two have maybe grown up together?
You’re a classic example of a hater. You have to hate on the kid for any and everything he does or doesn’t do, and then you get so desperate you have to make up stuff to complain about. I’m going to judge your character as a jealous, bitter, ignorant, little tool. How do you like being judged?
As for him being a role model, I don’t think anybody is saying that. However, unfortunately we don’t get to choose who is our kid’s role model. I do, however, respect him (and anyone else who does the same) for trying to send the right message to the kids. No one is perfect, not even your boy Mariota. Then again, since you are so obsessed with him that you use his name, you probably don’t want to hear that.

You clearly based everything from whatever article pops up on yahoo, PFT, and other areas. This is not the first time JW talks to kids, does a charity event, volunteers for some event. You’d know these other events if you devoted time into Winston and know all his actions.
You got a point with any person being infamous as a role model, but to label JW as it then you throw yourself in the pool of bad examples of role models.

I have a 15 year old son. He was watching Winston long before the allegations came out. He saw Winston do things like pump up the team before a game (Clemson 2013) that FSU was supposed to lose, according to the experts. (Final score: FSU 51, Clemson 14) He saw him do thing like his pregame “ritual” with Fisher’s son. He saw stories of Winston and other teammates visiting kids in Tally hospitals. There was (and still is) a LOT of good that the kid did that didn’t make the national media.
Once the allegations came out, I sat down with my son and we talked about it. It was a great chance to have a discussion about how you treat women.
I get that you don’t like the kid, and I respect the fact that you have that opinion and share it here. Just don’t be surprised when others, especially others who “know” Winston better than you do disagree.
By the way, regarding the role model thing… I hope that I am my son’s role model. I choose not to let public figures, especially athletes, replace my responsibilities when it comes to that. Judge my parenting as you will.

I think he simply has weak character. He can’t stick to his commitment. Most likely because he’s so self-absorbed that he made himself believe Mariota was the pick, when it was more than obvious it was Winston. Now, that it’s Winston, he is unable to follow through on his own words.
But, in a way, I like it. It shows how much Winston is in his head. Whether he can admit it or not.

To all of you that obviously, breathlessly await my next post, thank you…sincerely….for helping me bring attention and focus to my beliefs, not to mention the similar beliefs of tens of thousands of others in the Tampa Bay community. I’m still here because I AM a Bucs fan. And I still use the MariotaJoe moniker because I won’t “hide” just because the Bucs drafted an obviously poor character guy, or you guys throw hate turds at me (and yes, I had hoped they’d pick Mariota, but it was plain to see in the weeks leading up to draft day, that was extremely unlikely). You guys wanna put him on a pedestal for your kids? You have that right…but….it ain’t right. Infamous has torn the guts of many Bucs fans. Love the Bucs, but just don’t even want to see that guy. And it is rather sad that JBF here feels the need to act like Infamous’ “positive advertising agency” and “head cheerleader” because he’s quite aware the Bucs have drafted a huge PR problem.

Not sure where anyone said that they were putting Winston on a pedestal for their kids (except, well, you).
No hate turds here, and you have obviously decided that this guy is not your cup of tea, but I would challenge that you just don’t know (or don’t want to know) anything about the kid that wasn’t spoon fed to ESPN or the NYT by his accuser’s attorneys.
If you have kids, and you are so worried that this “bad character guy” will have some sort of negative impact on their lives, then by all means, sit down and talk with them… let them know how you feel. Heck, you could even make sure that they don’t watch any Bucs games while he is around. Problem solved!

How can anyone be as ill informed as Mariotajoe. Yea Jameis made some mistakes. But so has every other player almost. You just dont hear about it non stop like with Jameis. Dont beleive everything bspn feeds you.
Ultimately Jameis’ play will dictate if he becomes the face of the franchise. Motivating kids everyday wont save his job if he sucks. He has to perform.

Well, i can’t speak for anyone else on here, but do know that when DO have kids, i’d rather that me and my wife be the role model’s that they look up to, or our aunts and uncles…you know, people that actually have a real impact in their lives, not some people that they just see on TV and may never get the opportunity to truly emmulate.

While they are not hitting raw points, I do feel the need to clear up misconceptions. Don’t go overboard and think you are hitting nerves, your narrow mind is what hits the nerves.
Thinking the way you do, commenting and expressing yourself doesn’t get any “likes” or someone agreeing with your thought some disagree and give their points.
