Good “Stressing” From The O-line Coach
May 7th, 2015Joe wants to be excited about the Bucs’ offensive line under the tutelage of veteran O-line coach George Warhop, who is in his second season in Tampa.
So far this offseason, Joe has learned Warhop was heavily involved in the scouting process and that he’s a tough grader when it comes to scrutinizing players. (Joe’s really resisting sarcasm and wiseguy commentary.)
Joe also learned this week from Demar Dotson that Warhop is talking tough, trying to rid last year’s performance out of his suspect unit.
JoeBucsFan.com: You’ve been around a couple of rookie quarterbacks in your time here. Do you have certain advice you plan to give a rookie quarterback? Or something you’d like to see him surrounded with to be successful?
Demar Dotson: The first thing he is going to need is an offensive line that is going to protect for him. (Laughs) And obviously, we gotta do a better job than what we gave for Josh (McCown) last year, especially with a young guy that is coming in. I think (George) Warhop, our offensive line coach, you know, he’s more stressing that we gotta play better than what we played last year. Because, like I said, with a rookie quarterback there’s going to be some challenges. There’s going to be some ups, there’s going to be some downs. You know, we gotta make him feel comfortable as best we can. It is going to rely on us to keep him as clean as we can.”
That feels like a great start; Warhop is “stressing” that the O-line must play better.
Again, Joe’s not being a wiseass. Dotson easily could have said Warhop liked components of what he saw late last season and opened up this offseason being all rah-rah and positive. Remember, Lovie Smith is a glass-half-full kind of guy, and many coaches refuse to talk about the previous season.
Joe likes what Warhop is “stressing.” It’s helping Joe stop stressing about what stressed out Bucs fans all last year — the offensive line.

Quality coaching is important but it can’t make chicken soup out of chicken poop…
Anthony Collins, O. Cousins, P. Omamah, G. Gilkey = steamy pile of chicken poop…
Lay off Warhop the line will be better with better talent…

George Warhop=Derek Shelton
May 7th, 2015 at 12:21 pm
I think Warhop is stressing due to the fact his unit was the worst. I know Lovie is on the hot-seat, but that should be an understatement for Warhop. Guy has an upperade for the OL, plus whatever we get off the wire,…so lets make it work Warhop.
May 7th, 2015 at 12:35 pm
he’s more stressing that we gotta play better than what we played last year?
do you really need to be told that? demar Dotson sounds way more country that Winston, I can just imagine how he said that…..that’s the worst quote by a buc so far in 2015 but the year is early

Remember it’s ES now not EDS. And, I thought we got a bag of deflated balls for Zuttah?
May 7th, 2015 at 1:17 pm
Our offensive line last year was….well offensive to say the least!

OAR
Shouldn’t we have gotten Tom Brady with that bag of deflated balls? Darn you OBP!!!!!
May 7th, 2015 at 1:30 pm
Maybe Warhop is stressing because he knows the Asst. OL coach was the scapegoat for his crappy coaching job. Warhop might not be so lucky next offseason if he can’t get results.
May 7th, 2015 at 1:31 pm
@OAR
EDS in 2014, ES in 2015….get it?
May 7th, 2015 at 1:50 pm
we definitely wont be getting lael collins for warhop to coach turribly…i like the proposed OL above luvmybucs
May 7th, 2015 at 1:56 pm
Cowboys just signed Collins 🙁 …that 7th round pick would have been worth a shot…
May 7th, 2015 at 2:00 pm
DallasBuc hates anything Buccaneer and is just a loser troll.
After all these years of being on this site I have not seen him write one positive thing about the Bucs.
The entire OL was hampered last year by a very incompetent OC but he refuses to understand that very valid point.
Often during games, when the huddle broke, you would see the OL go to the line with body language displaying they had no confidence in the play called.
When you take away a units confidence, you take away a large part of their performance.
DallasBuc is just a troll and a fan of another team.
May 7th, 2015 at 2:05 pm
We need to see a big improvement in OL play this year otherwise Warhop may be working at IHOP next year. 🙂
May 7th, 2015 at 2:05 pm
drdneast….not for nothing but what have the bucs shown in the past 3 even 10 years to be positive about? So I am guessing DALLASBUC along with everyone else who like a winnning product have a pretty good right to be pissed at the crap that shows up on Sundays to go 2-14 or 4-12…show some positives and there will be positivity flowing from many keyboards

Sad but true brotha
May 7th, 2015 at 2:25 pm
Luv
One problem, apparently NOT ONE GD PLAYER WANTS TO SIGN WITH US!!!!!
Not Cole, Connelly, Hardy, Wiz or Collins.
Collins is especially insulting considering that the Dallas Convicts have one of the best OLs in the league and he may have to compete for a position. You would think he would take the garuntees staters job with the bucs. For all I know he’ll probably start with dallas anyway but that doesn’t change the fact that only back-ups are signing with us and probably getting overpaid at that.
May 7th, 2015 at 2:28 pm
It’s May 7th 2015 what is OUR team doing to improve the Offensive Line?? We’ve Given Up *99 sacks in two years, with no running game to speak of.
May 7th, 2015 at 2:39 pm
@WS99
Brotha, that’s why I’m suggesting its time to hit the trade market. Bring in as much competition as possible. F*k this wait until the last minute Bullsh*t. Let me see how this dude looks after OTA’s etc, etc.
WE already know that these prospects- need grooming
• Kadeem Edwards-Tennessee State ←He Played where?
• Garrett Gilkey-Chadron State ← What?
• Ali Marpet-← Good Prospect –But Hobart
May 7th, 2015 at 2:47 pm
@LUV – Pretty sure they just drafted 2 guys, I’m assuming they think that will help. We’ve also got 2 guys that were drafted last year that should improve in year 2.
@WS99 –
Collins would have been nice, but can’t blame him for going to the Cowboys really. Keep in mind, he didn’t only turn down the Bucs, he turned down 30 other teams too.
Screw Wiz. He also went to Seattle, and didn’t get a contract. I’m guessing the Bucs didn’t want to pay him what he wanted or they didn’t like what they saw when he visited. If he was all about the quality of the team, why the hell would he be with the Jags instead of the Seahawks?
Conelly is washed up. For all the complaints about Mankins, I’m surprised anyone wants him here.
May 7th, 2015 at 2:55 pm
Even (C) Alex Mack was rumored to be traded during the draft.
All I’m saying is- Trade for some quality VETS!!
Bring’em in early….. like MAY …….not JUNE, JULY, or Aug.
This way, the dudes have ample time to adjust, and get accumulated to the system.
Then maybe, our offensive line will have some type of freakin’ continuity.
May 7th, 2015 at 2:59 pm
drdneast- here we go again! So, you continue to personally attack an anonymous commentor on a sports blog and I am the loser troll? As I have told you repeatedly I will continue to beat on the people responsible for bringing this team to this all-time low. I am not required to say positive things to make you happy. However, I have been positive about drafting of Winston and Evans but for all the moves these bums have made the best they can show for it is hope for 2 very draft picks. I was positive about Morris, Freeman and Schaino but when their decisions and performance stunk I said so. Being a fan does not mean being unconditionally positive about all players, coaches or decisions. I am a fan of the team first and this team is the worst in all of football because of incompetent Lovie Smith. That is not an opinion.
You are a funny dude. Keep carrying water for that incompetent HC and his lousy bobblehead lapdog GM. It’s a hoot!
May 7th, 2015 at 3:01 pm
LuvMyBucs, I am on the same train you are the bucs offensively where you build a team, the OL, is still terrible, and maybe a legitimate OC will help with the lack thereof, but we still have the same pathetic OL as last year and no way is Hobart and Penn State being coached by IHOP going to turn into the 80’s HOgs, the bucs will be 4-12 this year and winston will throw 28-32 ints, and maybe 20 TDs but he will get clobbered for 40 sacks….on a positive note i think peyton threw 27-32 ints his rookie year and that worked out….it just sucks to keep losing and there are solutions out there and the bucs are blind to the solutions, well except the D3 dynamo, that was D3 for a reason, i am sure JJ Watt will show him difference
May 7th, 2015 at 3:01 pm
^^^…2 very *high* draft picks.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:05 pm
Dusthty- love the IHOP and D3 Dynamo reference! Stealing…
May 7th, 2015 at 3:09 pm
@JFat
Brotha ,
I don’t see how two dudes that, were drafted in the later rounds last year
• Kadeem Edwards -2014: 5th Rnd, 143rd (Tennessee State)
• Kevin Pamphile -2014: 5th Rnd, 149th (Purdue)
Who basically didn’t get ANY play time. Are all of a sudden ready to light the world on fire. I can see, if I heard some good things about them in practice-But that wasn’t the case. We didn’t hear a pin drop about these cats. Garrett Gilkey getting play time should speak volumes..lol
May 7th, 2015 at 3:10 pm
Jfat
Are you suggesting we didn’t want to sign them?
Dallas
Keep it real bruh, always!
Dusty
The major difference between Peyton’s rookie year and JWs rookie year will be marshall Faulk or a premium rb in the backfield. L&L really need to get on the phone with Minnesota or Chicago to bring in some help.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:13 pm
Luv
Do you know how pamphile graded out? He wants as aweful as cousins or collins or eds for that metter.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:15 pm
*wasn’t
May 7th, 2015 at 3:20 pm
@Dusthty Rhothdes
Exactly!!! Now if our Offensive Line Coach was the Great Hudson Houck. I wouldn’t say a word, because I know the dude’s-built some the best lines in College & NFL history.
But nah……its Warhop!!!!
May 7th, 2015 at 3:26 pm
@WS99
Athletically, Pamphile was one of the best LT prospects in the draft last year. But for whatever reason-With plenty of great prospects on the board-The team chose to spend a high 2nd round pick on LT Donovan Smith. A guy who many had slotted in the middle of the 3rd round.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:31 pm
I like this kid smith. I hope he shines.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:38 pm
@WS99
I’ve been talking the kid up since Dec.-w/ proper motivation the kid will be a beast.
May 7th, 2015 at 3:52 pm
Always kills me to hear someone isn’t motivated to make millions to play a game. I’m missing 2″ n 30lbs or I’d gladly switch with him. Oh n talent I’m missing the talent too.
May 7th, 2015 at 4:06 pm
@WS99
haha, I hear U
May 7th, 2015 at 7:21 pm
@WS99 – As far as Wiz is concerned. Yeah, I think they might have met with him and decided to go in another direction. That’s one thing I hate about these “visits” we never know the reason a guy doesn’t get signed. Could be money, could be bad fit, maybe they didn’t like his shoulder problems, maybe he didn’t like the Bucs. The fact that the Seahawks didn’t sign him either, makes me think there was something the teams didn’t like about him
Connolly hasn’t even had a visit with another team and NE didn’t take him back. So that’s why I think he’s washed up. Bucs might be a little gun-shy about signing a guy that is just looking for 1 more paycheck before retirement.
I don’t see any great options out there right now, Bucs made an attempt to address it in this year’s draft and I’m not going to write off the 2 fifth rounders from last season yet. I’m not saying Pamphile/Edwards will “light the world on fire”, but it isn’t a stretch to think they might improve to the point of being at least an average player.
That being said, if any solid offensive linemen wind up getting cut soon, I would hope the Bucs are still in the game to improve the situation and go after them.
May 7th, 2015 at 9:42 pm
Not good news to hear that George is making scouting decions. They need to leave that to the pros
May 7th, 2015 at 10:35 pm
Sadly, the offensive line is the unit that requires the most time in order to perform well. That experience is only going to be obtained by playing games, together. O-lines are not repaired with patchwork. Players are rarely “plug-and-play” on the O-line. This concept seems to have alluded L&L.
It is irresponsible that this regime not only blew out the other O-linemen, before they ever meet them, but has been anything but EXTREMELY assertive to find veteran replacements, along with inexperienced rookies from tiny colleges.
Also, get ready to here the reports from tomorrow’s rookie camp about how amazingly the drafted o-linemen performed!
