Bucs second-year guard Kadeem Edwards

One of the elite personnel gurus of the modern era, Hall of Famer Bill Parcells, has a simple philosophy when it comes to drafted players:

First, nothing conclusive should be drawn from a rookie year because of the acclimation process to the NFL, Parcells told BSPN Radio. Second, a player failing to perform in Year 2 after a weak rookie year would end the relationship.

“And if you don’t see it, third year out,” Parcells said. “Get some more young players.”

Hmm, Daquan Bowers or Myron Lewis sure wouldn’t have wanted to play for Parcells.

Hearing this got Joe thinking about last year’s fifth-round picks, offensive linemen Kadeem Edwards and Kevin Pamphile. Joe is rather confident they’ll make the 53-man roster this year, but they have to improve and perform when called upon in games, practice and preseason.

Fairly, or unfairly, Joe has referred to them as “milk cartons.” If they can’t break that label, then Joe would be pleased to follow the Parcells rule and send them on their way.

Good thing the Packers and Cowboys didn’t use that philosophy with Rogers and Romo or they would be playing somewhere else.
In other words Joe, if you don’t get a chance to play, it’s hard to improve and show you are improving.
Neither player got a lot or regular season playing time last year that I recall.
Be careful of using blanket statements and applying them to everyone.

  2. The Real Malloy Says:

yeah, but there is a difference with QB’s doc…..

Those two were supposed to sit and wait….you dont draft a tackle and guard to ride the pine for 4 seasons…

  3. Vic Says:

@drdneast — Parcells is talking about more than just in the game, practice and everything as joe mentioned. If the Bucs saw anything exciting out of these two, tehy probably don’t draft like they did.

  4. Leonard Scarnesi Says:

“Milk carton(s)” even though Edwards was injured for the entire year? Typical JOE logic. Maybe JOE, with all of his football credentials, is capable of looking into another football reality and was able to see that Edwards would have been a “milk carton” even if he hadn’t lost his rookie season Someone as omnipotent as JOE should be the centerpiece of a new religion since JOE is all-seeing and all-knowing (not to mention highly credentialed).

  5. Joe Says:

Dude, Edwards was not injured all year. Joe saw the guy in countless practices and through preseason. He didn’t perform well when on the field.

  6. tmaxcon Says:

injuries are not an excuse. you are paid to play… if you are hurt that is not an excuse that just means you can’t and did not do your job…

  7. The Real Malloy Says:

are you hurt or are you injured?

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

That rule should go for the person drafting them as well. You will not win in this league without a badass gm. It is more important than a coach

  9. McBuc Says:

Drdneast. Rodgers was always going to sit, that was by design. Romo was never supposed to play, he was able to take advantage of a rare opportunity. You are comparing apples to oranges.

  10. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Nov. 11th -Kadeem Edwards was placed on injured reserve w/the infamous FOOT injury.

  11. Tiny Tim Says:

You can tell Bill Belicheck is a disciple of Parsells. He too cuts players after year two if they are not showing improvement. That’s why they always have 11 draft picks. As quick as they bring in players, they are just as quick to replace them. It’s a misconception that the Patriots hit on all their draft picks. They have their failures just like any other team, but they move on from them faster by replenishing with many draft picks (Logan Mankins trade for example or the compensatory pick they will get for Revis).

  12. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Release
    • Logan Mankins LG: $7,000,000
    • Michael Koenen P : $3,250,000

Rumored to be traded or released
    • Alex Boone RG $3,740,000
    • Evan Mathis LG $5,500,000
    • Kraig Urbik LG $2,200,000

    (Projection)
    LT-Donovan Smith | Kevin Pamphile
    LG-Evan Mathis | Kraig Urbik
    C-Evan Smith | Ali Marpet
    RG-Alex Boone | Patrick Omameh
    RT-Demar Dotson

Stop pu$$y footing around, and bring some guys in EARLY- to challenge these kids Licht.

i like the way you think luvmybucs

but you forgot to release warhop

  14. Rrsrq Says:

I expect a turnaround, my concern is coaching, please help Mr. Offensive Coordinator, because our line was just that, “offensive”

  15. Tiny Tim Says:

Licht said Marpet is a guard.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    LUVMYBUCS

I’d take that line in front of fameis

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    @Robert 9
    Thank Sir

    @Tiny Tim

Licht also thought Free Agent (C) Stefen Wisniewski could play guard. Apparently the kid felt otherwise, because he signed w/ Jacksonville to play center.

    @tmaxcon
You gotta find some way of keeping this kid upright. The current lot won’t hold up

  18. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Thank *U Sir

Hopefully these 2 5th rounders from last year do show improvement. How much better would this OL be better with them and the 2 2nd rounders this year. Also with the UDFAs we pick up this year after waiver wire and last year we got a tackle M. Pachan. K. Edwards can develop and play behind L. Mankins or battle with A. Marpet. Same thing with K. Pamphlet play behind Dotson and/or battle with D. Smith at LT. None the less our line has to be better this year than last year. Our running game and QB play will be much better and we can actually sit thru a whole game without puking in our mouth.

    —————————-

Not sure what your point is. Marpet was drafted and therefore he plays where the coach and GM tells him to play. BTW…..You do realize Marpet played tackle in college right? At the press conference and in interviews, Licht said he will compete for the starting guard spot. Wisiniewski was a free agent which meant he could pick and choose who he signed with based on best fit for him. If he felt he was better suited to play center rather than guard, then that is his decision and his right as a “free agent.” Wisiniewski and Marpet’s situation is totally different.

    @Tiny Tim

He played some defense too, at Hobart College do think he’ll DT?

Playing LT against 200lb DE’s @ a Division III school-don’t mean jack sh*t in the NFL. Sure it shows versatility- don’t get me wrong.

But I watched up him the entire week of Senior Bowl Practice. An he did struggle mighty early on against a few decent tackles. But I noticed when they switched him over to center, mid way through the week, the boy shined.-He was a natural

He reminded me of similar prospect a few years back-by the name of Danny Watkins. Danny played at Butte College, before he transferred over to Baylor.
After a few practices at the Senior Bowl, Watkins shined to.

Philadelphia drafted him at the end of the 1st round. Unfortunate he couldn’t consistently dominate NFL lineman-the way he did at Butte College-so he was soon out of the league.

The funny thing is that-Our current National Scout-Andy Speyer was on part of that Philadelphia scouting Dept. that selected Watkins.

  22. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    *mightily

  23. BuccaneEric Says:

If Marpet is soon out of the league, passing on Cann won’t look too good. The only thing I pass on the Can is gas!!!

  24. CLW JB Says:

I love the suggested all star line of free agents and trades, but it’s not realistic. The key to our offense is this line, we are pretty well set at the skill positions – better than any year in recent memory…

Hope and pray Marpet can step up – the dude Cann looked exactly like Davin Joseph to me in size ability and dreads and we coulda got him late second without giving up a pick

  25. joeNUTS Says:

I am hoping the addition of the new OC Koetter will outweigh any negative Warhop effect. The play of the OL will determine the success of JW and the Bucs this year. I like the video on Marpet will be interesting to see if it translates to the NFL.

That was not the argument. I said Licht said he was brought in to play guard not center. I don’t care about”your” scouting report and what you think took place at the senior bowl. Your scouting report means jack $hit!!! Many scouts said he was a 2nd or 3rd round guard. Marpet is here to play guard right now. Point blank!!!

Our O-line is gonna suck again.

Donovan Smith is gonna get eaten alive as a starting LT. Erik Fisher, the #1 overall pick from a few years ago still sucks.

A rookie? At left tackle? Yea. Good luck with that.

And Ali Marpet? Against NFL speed?

    Sure.

Our coaching staff is on crack.

We shouldve accepted the Eagles trade!!!

    Sam Bradford? 2 1st rounders? A 3rd? And 3 players??

    Maaaaannnnnn
