Drafting With Purpose … Unlike Last Year
May 1st, 2015The Bucs desperately needed a quarterback entering last year’s draft. But they passed on good ones.
They didn’t need a tight end or a running back, yet pounced on them in the second- and third-round, respectively.
The Bucs also needed offensive linemen in April 2014, but waited far too long it the draft.
Joe looks at the focus and purpose with which the Bucs have approached this year’s college crop, and it tells Joe so much of what was wrong with last season.
Kudos to Jason Licht and Lovie Smith and Team Glazer — Yes, Team Glazer — for embracing a clear direction. The Bucs drafted the best available quarterback, Jameis Winston, and set out to do the right thing — protecting their investment by drafting two offensive linemen: Donovan Smith and Ali Marpet in the second round.
A sound approach is always a good thing.

Protect the Chosen One at all cost. Give Winston some time a he will shred you like a surgeon.
Us Noles fans know what I’m talking about.

I believe the Buccaneers traded up to get Randy Gregory and were jumped by the Cowboys resulting in this pic
May 1st, 2015 at 10:18 pm
77bassguitarist…I said the same thing on the open thread while we were waiting for the pick to come in…
I think they were going after Gregory.

You can believe what you want.. But you’re wrong. The moon landing was real, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.. They are no death panels.
May 1st, 2015 at 10:22 pm
Me too think.they wanted rg
May 1st, 2015 at 10:37 pm
@ 1987…totally agreed
May 1st, 2015 at 10:53 pm
Completely disagree that last years draft was misguided. They clearly targeted BPA skill positions, thinking they had addressed OL and QB in FA. This team needed a multi year rebuild, I don’t care how close they “thought” they were to competing for the playoffs. The bandages have been ripped off, this team is being built the right way.
May 1st, 2015 at 10:53 pm
I just can’t see us wanting Gregory. He’s a 3-4 OLB. He’d never be a 3 down DE at 230 pounds.
May 1st, 2015 at 10:57 pm
Guys watch the vdieos on ali marpet on nfl.com hes a slam dunk pick…

You do realize they know the pick ahead of them before they make the trade right? They find out the picks before we do, lol.
May 1st, 2015 at 11:00 pm
Come on guys (especially my new friend Buc1987)! You guys should know better than that. Do you really think the NFL would have it where the picks stack up and the teams don’t know what the picks are?
May 1st, 2015 at 11:03 pm
@ hawaiian u don’t trade back into the second round for a d3 center gregory was who they were after. End of story pal
May 1st, 2015 at 11:04 pm
Why the hell would we want Gregory? Dudes not gonna be playing football after failing 100 drug tests in his first season. He’s addicted to weed. He’s not going to stop. All players with history of weed addiction never stop. We all know how tanard Jackson’s story went.
May 1st, 2015 at 11:05 pm
They knew Gregory was taken before we traded. They don’t have the delay we do. Idiots
May 1st, 2015 at 11:06 pm
You guys are not smart. Hawaiian is right. The Bucks knew beforehand who was available or not. They wanted their center. Not some doped up loser.
May 1st, 2015 at 11:09 pm
@ bucfan593 so you’re a real tough guy nobody has insulted u bruh

Are you really trying to argue this with me? Let me tell you how it works, because you obviously are clueless. When a team submits a pick, all teams are notified. You can say whatever you want, but that’s what happens. It’s a fact. Look it up. Now go to bed, because you’re stupid.
May 1st, 2015 at 11:13 pm
Oh please, please, please, try to tell me I’m wrong.
May 1st, 2015 at 11:17 pm
@ hawaiian i dont sit behind the computer and argue on threads I’m off to go home to my preggo wife u can sit and ja#@ck off by you’re self …i simply state my opinion and I’m done
May 1st, 2015 at 11:18 pm
I wonder if Lovie watches NFL Network or ESPN in the war room? If he has to go to the bathroom, they probably just hit pause on the DVR. I wonder if they ban twitter, because you can go on twitter and find out the picks early too. LMAO
May 1st, 2015 at 11:18 pm
Hawaiian is right. When the pick announcements back up they always say that the teams already know who was picked. It’s just the TV audience that doesn’t know yet.

Hawaiian- lol!
Damn facts! They aren’t gonna get in the way of my theory!!
Lol
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:20 am
Really happy with draft. Thought there was only 4 NFL left tackles in this draft- and we got on.
Smith reminds me of a young Jonathan Ogden.
Marpet reminds me of a young- Logan Mankins!
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:24 am
if they wanted Gregory, they could’ve easily drafted him, sorry, but he wasn’t on their radar that high, end of story brah! Smith and Marpet are excellent picks I called and couldn’t be happier!
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:28 am
” Now go to bed, because you’re stupid.”
i didn’t know sleep fixed stupid?!? lol
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:32 am
Gregory is one guy I wouldn’t have drafted at all, and I’m usually all for taking chances on questionable character guys. This guy’s character isn’t questionable – we know exactly what kind of character he has. He can join Dez and Greg Hardy in the all-criminal team.
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:33 am
@lurker,
If I could convince my wife it did, maybe she would let me sleep in more, lol.
May 2nd, 2015 at 12:40 am
Stupid, dumb and ignorant.
Those words describe anyone who thinks the Bucs would select a player like Shane Ray or Randy Gregory.
Not because of the pot, drug use and or lies to teams.
But because they’re both stand up 3-4 OLB’s who are too small to play Defensive End in a 4-3 Defense with their hands on the ground, in a man’s scheme.
If you didn’t know, now you know dumbass.
May 2nd, 2015 at 1:00 am
Preach on brothers! We do not live in the film draft day or where teams only watch Mel keiper to announce the next draft pick.
Randy Gregory lol. Seriously the bucs did their homework on JW, clemmings and other potential busts. Randy Gregory in a bad spot already, bucs don’t want that. The dude had issues with weed since high school? Middle school?
Doesn’t sound like a buccaneer man
May 2nd, 2015 at 2:02 am
Addicted to WEED!
*LOL*
May 2nd, 2015 at 7:19 am
Anybody that thinks the Bucs jumped up for Gregory only to see him taken by the Cowboys, obviously doesn’t know how trades or the draft works.
The trade for the Colts pick was NOT completed until AFTER Gregory was chosen by the Cowboys. Just because the pick hasn’t been announced, doesn’t mean it isn’t already in. I knew about the trade and the pick of Gregory WAY before anything was announced officially because I was following the draft on Twitter, where picks are often leaked up to 15 minutes before they were officially made.

Hawaiian you are by far my favorite poster on this site. You always come to the table well informed. Your posts are always articulate and well thought out. Whenever I see your name I make sure to read what you’ve said. Keep up the good work my man!
May 2nd, 2015 at 11:00 am
@HawaiianBuc
You are right, of course.

@TDTampabay,
Thanks brother!
