Is There A Deal For The No. 1 Overall Pick?

BSPN is embedded at One Buc Palace and is reporting that Bucs general manager Jason Licht says trade inquiries for the No. 1 overall pick are on the rise today.
Back at the NFL Owners Meetings in Arizona, Joe, Lovie Smith and two other local writers had a private pre-7 a.m. chat.
Early in that chat, Lovie talked about how the Bucs always would be eager to consider an enticing trade-down deal. Of course, Lovie didn’t specify what kind of offer might get the personnel men at One Buc Palace to sit up in their chairs.
One of many giant reasons the Bucs need to draft Jameis Winston tomorrow night is because the 2016 crop of college quarterbacks is unimpressive. There is no flock of studs on the horizon.
But that also means teams in need of a quarterback now might be willing to part with a king’s ransom, since their outlook is so grim.
Hypothetically, what if the desperate Jets offered the Bucs their first-round picks in 2015 (No. 6 overall), 2016 and 2017, plus second- and fourth-round picks this year, and threw in Geno Smith?
Would the Bucs be tempted?
Joe thinks so.
Joe would not like a deal like that. The NFL Draft is a gamble no matter what you do. So when you have a shot at the jackpot, you pull the damn lever.
What’s not a gamble is predicting failure when you have a second-rate quarterback talent — in a division with Cam Newton, Matt Ryan and Drew Brees.

No doubt they will field offers. I don’t think a team would be willing to pay the enormous price it would take to get the first pick and the Bucs shouldn’t settle for anything less than a pile if premium picks. All signs point to Winston.

I wouldn’t trade away the opportunity to draft Mariota, even if a team offered all of their draft picks this and their 1st 3 picks next year…. Yes, I think Marcus is going to be THAT good.

No way do they get an offer like that. A few teams will see if they are scared of jameis and try to get the pick on the cheap and that won’t happen. The BIG problem the bucs have is they showed so much love for Jameis and everyone concluded he is going to be a buc so they did not meet him/ private workouts ect. The teams that really got to know Jameis, like him but very few teams got to know him. Bucs should have been less open because you never know what teams will do when they are desperate. #5 could have bought a house in early March, thats how long this has been over.

I heard Pat Kirwan on Siruis/XM NFL radio today (in Chicago for the Draft) say something interesting…. he says that a current NFL GM told him that he thinks that it would take 3-#1’s, 3-#2’s and 3 players to move up to #1 to get Mariota. When Jim Miller asked him if any team would consider doing that, Kirwan said that YES, he could see someone like Chip Kelly offering that type of package to the Bucs in order to ensure they got Mariota!
So now if you are Lovie/Licht, would you take Philly’s #1’s in 2015, 2016, 2017…Philly’s #2 selections in 2015, 2016, 2017….and lets say QB Sam Bradford, OT Jason Peters and OLB Mychal Kendricks (and maybe even a swap…Doug Martin for Demarco Murray) for the #1 pick?
That’s a hell of a haul for 1 draft pick! Would be very tough to turn down!

I love how the draft is a “Gamble” unless you talk about Winston on this site. Winston is very high risk. You could divide that risk by turning the #1 pick into several. Better chance of finding success with more picks than a rookie qb with question marks and no offensive line or running game to support him.

Winston is a Gamble every pick is but I’ll tell you what I’d gladly take the gamble with Winston staying out of trouble over trading down and gambling that Lovie will make the right picks especially considering he only got 1 starter out of the entire draft last year. ASJ is a walking injury and simms did nothing so please spare me that if they are not on the field they are not starters. regardless of excuse why they did not play. Again, trusting Lovie is far more risky than trusting Winston….

he’s a minimum 75% bust probability and the highest risk there is. the only comfort i would have if they took him is knowing L&L will be gone next year.

If Chip Kelly can make his way up to #2, I would take a straight up swap of the #1 pick for Sam Bradford and the #2 pick. You know who Kelly is going after so no worries there. You get the guy you wanted at a slightly lower pay number. You get to have Bradford in house to help Winston come along and you have Glennon as trade bait for another pick. If Winston does well, you get another serviceable backup and trade Bradford in a year or two. If Winston sucks, you’ve got one hell of a backup to come in and take over.

There are at least 4 teams interested in moving up to snag Mariota….Philly, Cleveland, NY Jets and San Diego…one of them may try to move up to#2 and trade with Tennessee….but that leaves 3 other teams to negotiate with Tampa and try to move up to #1. We could literally end up with half a dozen high future draft picks and some veteran players if we do a deal!
This could get very interesting in the next 24 hours!

This is getting insane. No team will give up their first and second round picks for the next 3 years for either Winston or Mariotta, both unproven. Talk about setting your franchise up for failure for many years to come. I mean you miss on your first round pick just one year and it effects your franchise substantially. Mayock- former NFL scout, Gruden-Super bowel coach and offensive minded, Dungy- Super bowel winning coach all prefer Mariota. He has escape ability, Graduated in 3 years with a 4 year degree which shows discipline. Great guy off the field, and he is already the professional you all hope with Garnet and Gold glasses that Winston will one day be. Mariota is not fat, doesn’t have women claiming he assaulted him, not a thief, doesn’t have the attitude of entitlement that Winston has.

Why do I get the feeling they’re trading down with the Redskins? They picked up RGIII’s 5th year option despite the coach clearly hating him. Is that because they intend on trading him and the acquiring team wants that option picked up? Perhaps. RGIII and #5 for #1 would be awful but….that’s Lovie and Licht’s MO so far, awful.

They picked up the option on RGIII because they don’t have another QB in the building worth having, they can’t guarantee that they’ll get a good QB in the draft and if he’s bad they can just bench him and have a very low salary obligation. The only risk is if he gets hurt, which may be why they just bench him anyway if he doesn’t blow them away in camp.

Find me a shred of evidence Winston has DRUG issues. That was what Dion is suspended for. But, he also had ON THE FIELD ISSUES!!!!!. He was a ghost like Michael Johnson. If he played like a #3 pick, he might stick around (see: Josh Brown still on Browns)
Free has never been accurate, including at K-State. That’s always been his biggest problem. And it’s not changing. He won’t beat out Matt Moore as 2nd string.

Trading that #1 pick would be the smartest thing to do by far. When you are 2-14 you need a lot of better players and you could leverage that #1 pick into several top notch players. Since 50% of 1st rounders fail in the NFL it’s better to bank on a handful of players than just one. Plus, neither one of these QB’s are worth that #1 pick anyway especially Winston

You have to listen to every offer that comes in and see if any would seriously help your ball club. If you get one you take it, if not you stand pat. Bucs at #1 are in total control of the draft, everything else depends on what they do. They can pick whoever they want or trade with whomever they want. They just have to decide which is the best for their team

The question I have is this. If the Bucs trade down, how much due diligence have they done on players projected to be picked not named Winston or Mariota? The Bucs have spent the majority of the off season focused on the QBs, especially Winston. We haven’t heard much about the Bucs working out other first round prospects. I’m sure they’ve done some due diligence on other top tier players, but not at the level of their research on the QBs. If the Bucs were seriously considering a trade down scenario, I would think there would’ve been a lot more reports of them working out players projected to be taken outside the top five picks. I still think the pick will be a QB.

you do realize there are 20 other potions on the filed other than DT… Investing 100 million in one and high first draft pick in another and back to back free agent signings of McDonald and Melton makes NO sense. Not to mention Akeem who was a 3rd or 4th rd pick if my memory serves me right. man think about it… Yeah odds are McCoy plays 8 or less games this year so having depth is valuable with his injury history. but you are committing 5 of your top 7 players to the DT position. does not make sense to me.

We didn’t hear much on the Bucs spending time with Evans last year yet that was the pick. In fact if I remember all we heard was how enthralled with Manziel the Bucs were…right school wrong player. Moral of the story…try to keep an open mind with the draft and don’t rule out any plausible draft scenario with Lovie and Licht.

With it everything so seemingly focused on two very different but risky qb prospects, the greater fear is the unspoken dread these guys will pick the “wrong” one, get axed in a season or two…then have Mr. Wrong learning a new system, failing. Drafting qbs over and over. If this is botched, we’re the Browns.

Cam Newton sucks. He is a crazy freak athlete when healthy but I don’t see the hype as far as an elite QB goes.
Matt Ryan is probably going to throw more Ints than TDs this year.
Drew Brees no longer had Jimmy Grahmn.
I would feel great with Koetter and Glennon and our defense this season. Lovie may go DE pick one. He may trade down. I would personally pick a QB to be safe but I think Glennon can be better than Matt Ryan with the first real coaching he is about to receive in his NFL career.
Somehow people find no OC to be an irrelevant factor in they’re evaluation of Glennon, and somehow those same people are well aware of how bad the O line was last year, but when it comes to the QB they don’t think that should make any difference.
Don’t be shocked when they trade down…

All players come with a level of risk. However, Williams is by far the safest pick in this draft, with Winston being by far the biggest risk and Mariota being somewhere in the middle.
During Williams’ freshman year he played LDE in Monte Kiffin’s T-2 and was dominate. He would be on his rookie deal for 5 years and would be the very best DL on the team except for GMC and soon that would be debatable. When you have a chance to get the next J.J. Watt or Julius Peppers who will go to many pro bowls you get him

I just hope this is not another Bo Jackson. For those too young to remember, Bo Jackson was an Auburn running back. The Bucs went 2-14 the previous year and had the first pick in the draft. They took Bo Jackson. Bo signed 4 weeks later with the KC Royals to play baseball; he turned his nose up at the Bucs.
It all sounds too, too familiar. Winston also plays baseball. The Bucs went 2-14 last year. They have the number one pick. You think maybe, maybe, the Bucs have asked Winston that, if selected, he will sign?

Im against a trade down deal unless it looks like what you describe because as much as you’ve convinced yourself, drafting either QB is no jackpot.

If a team wants Winston, I think to make a deal the Bucs would have to sweeten the pot. They’d more than likely would have to throw in a Bailiff and a Probation Officer.
Oh I forgot, no team wants to trade for Winston.
