Team Glazer better have more beer, hot dogs and toilet paper ordered this season because Jameis Winston is going to sell 10,000 new season tickets, if a prominent former Buccaneer is to be believed.
There are fat piles of cash from Wesley Chapel to Sarasota waiting to thrown at sales people at One Buc Palace, says ex-Bucs guard Ian Beckles, co-host of Ron and Ian on WDAE-AM 620.
Winston’s arrival will make having a good pair of Bucs tickets something to boast about again, per Beckles, and he made the point that fans are aching to latch on to a player. There just aren’t enough Gerald McCoy jerseys around town to suit Beckles’ eyeball test.
Joe’s unsure what kind of reaction Winston will generate from fans when it comes to parting with money. Sure, there will be a bump in season ticket sales. 10,000? Joe highly doubts it.
Joe is confident in one thing: If Winston is the opening day starter, then there won’t be an empty seat in the house on that broiling September afternoon.

I was watching nfl a.m. on the nflnetwork tv channel. live from one buc place they had a lady reporter named batista. she said she has spoken to many of the veteran bucs players. she didn’t give any of their names. they told her they expect the bucs to draft jameis Winston.

Would the FSU alums really be that big of an attendance boon for them? I mean, from what I recall, and I could be misremembering, weren’t a number of people from FSU saying that they were happy that he was there but it was time for him to go? That doesn’t sound like a fanbase that’s going to be following him around a lot. They’re grateful for the national championship and all the wins, but I’m not sure that they’re going to be following him to Tampa. I could be wrong.

I won’t be buying a Winston jersey. Never have liked wearing QB jerseys. I still have my Alstott jersey and recently got a signed Evans jersey. Of course I can’t wear the Evans jersey, so I’ll probably have to get another one of his or get his, Lavonte’s or Geralds. Before you ask, I probably wouldn’t have gotten a Mariota jersey either. Like I said, I just don’t get QB jerseys. Superstitious maybe?

Mariota will also put tons of fans in the stands. Winning cures all ills and Bucs fans are tired of being the weakest link in a weak division. I think an uptempo, fast break, Mariota-led offense will be a blast for Bucs fans to watch and root for! Dirk Koetter has his Oregon connection he knows what Mariota can do as well as anyone. Winston is a good young college QB, but Mariota is a weapon that will change the way opposing teams plan for playing the Bucs!

I think if Dirk Koetter had his choice, the pick would be Marcus Mariota.
I think though, that Jason Licht and Lovie Smith are locked on Jameis Winston (along with everyone else).
Here’s the thing…
I watch the footage of all of these analysts. For example, a recent bspn video comparing the two QBs, and one comment was that Mariota does not anticipate throws.
Meanwhile, the video they show of him clearly shows anticipation.
They showed video highlights of both QBs, and if you look at ball placement on passes Mariota comes out ahead.
And watch the videos. In EVERY PLAY, when the play starts, you can tell where Winston will throw it because that’s where he is staring EVERY TIME.
And watch the videos. From the time the plays start, count the seconds before ball release. Mariota is ALWAYS faster.
I would feel better about Winston is he were better at these areas, because if you look at previous busts, he has the same issues they did. That scares me.
The pick should be Mariota.
The pick WILL be Winston.
And the Bucs will have a top 7 pick next year.

I like Ian Buckles but he often says things that are outlandish. This is one of them. I remember when he constantly went after Barrett Rudd for being the weak link of the Buc D when it was the D line that was getting shoved back into his face. The end result is we ended up with Mason Foster who couldn’t tackle or play pass defense and was slower afoot than Rudd.
Brilliant Dummynick. That’s what happens when GM’s listen to washed up mediocre ex players and use them as personnel advisers.

Joe, I don’t know why, but the website is running very slow on wifi. A page loads okay, but when a comment is sent it takes almost 30 seconds for it to process. That is REALLY slow.

@Patrick in VA….. NO college QB is NFL ready when they enter the league. Winston is no different. If the Bucs take Jameis, he should also ride the pine for at least half the season too. one area where the Bucs are lucky is that we have a guy in Glennon that can start and lead the team for a while until our new QB is ready to take the field WITHOUT being completely overwhelmed!
I know you probably prefer Winston, but just imagine for a moment what an uptempo (not a wildcat or spread system), fast attacking offense led by a guy like Mariota (who is well accustomed to that tempo and style) could look like. It’s exciting to ponder what our new OC could do with a guy who is half Russell Wilson and half Steve Young!

I see no “denial” in my thoughts….I never said “The Bucs are 100% taking Mariota!” I said that a Mariota led Bucs offense would be exciting to watch and put fans in the stands!
You have your OPINIONS, I have mine, and all the other Bucs fans on here have theirs! And since NO PICK HAS BEEN MADE YET we are all expressing OPINIONS…not facts. I will support Winston IF he is the guy, but it doesn’t change my belief that Mariota would be the better long term NFL QB and more exciting weapon! I think the QB with the longer shelf life is Mariota. I just don’t see Winston lasting more than 7 years in the league.

I get what you’re saying and it’s tempting to think about, but how many QBs like Mariota who are able to run to get out of trouble end up being hampered by that in their development. RGIII can’t settle down in the pocket and read a defense and QB properly, Kaepernick has been shut down once the book came out on him, the Bucs were able to write the book on Vick and he hasn’t been the same since. I am perfectly happy with Winston’s scrambling ability. He is able to do just enough to be what you need from your QB. He can take the ball up the field and get you 7-8 yards when the play breaks down and you need a first down but he’s not fast enough to break off a 70 yard run. I don’t want that 70 yard run to be in my QBs mind as an option because instead of seeing all the throwing options in the play that’s unfolding, they’re weighing out whether they should tuck it and run themselves. I don’t want that. I’m fine with a guy that will run it effectively up the field 8 yards and slide for a first down. I’ll cheer that on all day. Let the Browns worry about the highlight reels where Manziel pulls out a wild play once a game and can’t do anything else the other 58 minutes of the game.

seats will be more empty if glennon is the starter on opening day….sorry to say it but since you don’t recognize it mike glennon is associated with losing and Winston is not. bucs need a fresh start on offense, all our offensive weapons are young guys except vjack, if there isn’t a significant different in talent between glennon and Winston then Winston starts because we’ll find out fast Winston is better and just as smart as glennon

@Patrick…I understand where you are coming from, but there are some key differences between Mariota and guys like Manziel and Kaepernick or RGIII. Mariota is inherently a much better passer than these guys were coming out of college. I compare him to Steve Young…only faster. These other guys you mentioned also don’t necessarily run the same kind fast break offense that Mariota is used to running.
I understand why you like Winston…he is a classic pocket passer with good arm strength, some mobility, a good football mind and a competitive nature. I don’t dislike him….I just think Mariota is a better all around weapon. I think Dirk Koetter could design a fast break (not necessarily a spread or wildcat system) offense around Mariota that would keep opposing offenses on their heels and allow our offense to operate from a position of strength.
I’ll support whomever the Bucs take and be in the stands at RayJay (at least a couple of times, as it is an 8 hour drive down from the north Georgia mountains) and at home in front of my TV cheering them on! I know you will too! Bring on the draft and let’s do this!!!!!!

@Jeagan – Those are all valid points and some of the reasons why, if the Bucs were to draft Mariota, I would be excited about some of the possibilities. What I keep coming back to with Winston is his level of understanding of the game and the abilities he’s shown when he not only has been doing this in a part time capacity but also played a position in baseball that was a hindrance to his throwing motion, thus limiting his effectiveness on the football field. Even with those hurdles, he still is at a level that would be exciting to get him just where he is. The fact that he has such a high ceiling in terms of what he could be once he is singularly focused and when he can devote all of his time to football, that’s really exciting.

I think it’s very shortsighted to compare Mariota with the likes of Vick, RG3 and Kaepernick. This guy has proven to those paying attention that he possesses fine ability to read defenses and make accurate throws. His athletic ability is only a bonus that can neutralize a team with tremendous pass rush. I believe a better comparison would be the likes of Steve Young, Russel Wilson, Fran Tarkenton and Donovan McNabb.

@Patrick….agreed! Both have exciting upside potential…just different styles. Winston reminds me a little of guys like Eli Manning, Ben Rothlisberger and Matt Ryan…..while Mariota makes me think about guys like Steve Young, Russell Wilson and Drew Brees. Not a bad group of passers to be compared to!

People who have played with him and interact with him seem to like his personality, rather than those who have formed opinions from media reports, press conferences, and sound bytes.
Once he’s a Buc, I think people who are on the fence will see more of him and find him quite likable. Of course, there will be people who will never like him.

Today feels like the day right before the Mayan calendar ran out or when a religious group said the rapture was coming or Dec 31, 1999. All of these folks are so spun up about this thing that they’re so sure is going to happen because they’ve conjured up this crazy scenario in their house while they’re wearing their tin foil helmets and dancing around in their grandmother’s underwear rubbing themselves in peanut butter. Arguing with the Mariota crowd is the same as those people that go up to the wacko that preaches to the students as they walk across the campus at UF and try to reason with him. In the end, the students just walk away feeling annoyed and they’ve changed nothing. Same thing here. We’ll wake up Friday morning with our answer. There will be no more debate because we’ll have facts and those who were so sure that they were right will be either back pedaling or will (hopefully) fade into the shadows.

@Skyline – I’m not sure that anyone has even suggested anywhere that Mariota could be ready to go on opening day. The biggest knock on him is the learning curve that he would face as he’s learning a new system. That wasn’t from necessarily “an analyst” so much as it’s from every analyst and every former player and everyone who covers football for a living.
Winston could very well sit until after the bye, but it’s not a given at all that he would sit for any games. He could very well start against the Titans.

NFL coaches and execs have said he would start from day one. Titan’s coach said that as well.
I don’t see a learning curve. He is very intelligent and has a very high football IQ. I don’t think it is going to be that large of a learning curve. Hell, Big Ben took snaps from shotgun his entire college career. He’s doing ok last I checked.

The Titans coach is also in the midst of doing everything they can to trade that second pick. If someone is going to give up the farm to move up to get him at #2, they better believe that he’s going to be able to start right away. That’s what the Titans are selling.
As for the comparison to Roethlisberger, I would say that you could draw that line between the two but history says that most QBs coming out of the spread take a long time to learn the pro style. Plus, Roethlisberger had the help of a ridiculous defense, Hines Ward, Jerome Bettis, Plaxico Burress and Duce Staley. We don’t really have that kind of firepower. We’ve got Evans and VJax, which is nice, but I’m not sure that I’d put them up against the 2004 steelers
