Winless Bucs In 2015?

April 23rd, 2015

lovie 1110b

Damn, Joe thought with an upgraded defense, and a franchise quarterback (finally), the Bucs would pull themselves out of the worst record in the NFL next season.

They certainly couldn’t be worse than their 2-14 season last year, could they?

Well, it seems quite a few folks at ESPN wouldn’t be shocked. While Bucs correspondent Pat Yasinskas has the Bucs going 8-8 next season — a huge turnaround — his comrades at the four-letter are not so generous.

In fact, it seems they think the Bucs will be winless.

But it turns out I’m in the minority when it comes to our NFL Nation reporters. We all had to do game-by-game picks. Just out of curiosity, I decided to check what the other reporters picked for each week on Tampa Bay’s schedule. It turned out to be quite a surprise.

If you go by what the other NFL Nation reporters think, the Bucs are headed for an 0-16 season.

This is borderline absurd. The Bucs lost so many close games last year and had garbage for a quarterback and virtually nothing from defensive linemen who didn’t go by the name of “McCoy.”

If this did happen, the Bucs going winless, not only would Lovie Smith’s job be in dire jeopardy, but Joe would join the “trade-down” crowd (for 2016). That’s because Tampa Bay already would have found its quarterback savior.

This team is not anywhere near as bad as Marinelli’s Lions were.

  2. SeattleBuc Says:

It’s been 9 months since I’ve chimed in my 2 cents. I was fried after the Bucs went 0 and 4 last year and stopped commenting. But I have logged on to this site every day since then to read. My Dad took me to games at the Big Sombrero. Remember Erict Rhett and Horace Copeland, I think the Quarterback was Ericson or Chris Chandler or some scrub like that, I forget. Anyways, grew up m TB, and will always be behind the Bucs, no matter what. I think the additions in FA on Defense will help, quality guys that know the system, we should be better there. We obviously need OL help bad, forget Adrian Peterson, resign LD. our RBs should be good enough, please strengthen the OL for God’s sake no matter who the QB is, TY

  3. Dick2111 Says:

Lost respect for most of the ESPN analysts a long time ago.

Appropriate that they’re owned and operated by Disney. Can think of several of Walt’s cartoon characters who I’d put more credence in. Daffy Duck and Goofy come to mind for starters.

  4. wisconsinbucsfan Says:

with the 1st selection in the 2015 NFL draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select…….Leonard Williams , Defensive End USC……. Just can not see Lovie going QB #1 overall.

  5. SeattleBuc Says:

Wisconsin, Its funny how ppl have been overlooking this all offseason. All up JW’s jock. When Logic tells us that Leonard would make our DL top 5 easy. I’ve been thinking that for months. But we really do need a QB bad, don’t we

  6. Bucnut2 Says:

Joe how can you call Winston a franchise qb when he’s not played a down in the nfl? And oh by the way if we go winless in 2015, he’s not a franchise qb

  7. SeattleBuc Says:

What if we got Leonard Williams, Then got Hundley, Petty, or Grayson. I’m playing Devil’s advocate because no one else is.

  8. P'cola Buc Says:

Without an upgrade in QB and the offense in general…your defense will be exhausted being on the field the majority of the game. Even the great Leonard Williams’ would be far less effective.

  9. Kevin Says:

If they go 0-16 I will be a full time Lightning fan. I see no way this can possibly happen without the coaching being HORRIBLE!!!

Last year I believe Lovie started tanking around week 5. This year there are no excuses for him to make the same “mistakes” he made last year. With Koetter in house there is just no way. Draft Winston and play the better QB after pre season.

  10. Kevin Says:

Isn’t Leanord Williams a DT? I was thinking Fowler with the first pick

  11. Espo Says:

    @Joe

So THIS is one of the few instances you call then ESPN instead of BSPN? Haaa!

  12. bucs4lyfe Says:

am I the only one that thought it was a miracle we won 2 games last year….someone tell espn marcus arroyo isn’t calling plays anymore, someone is behind the curb. picking any team to go 0-16 before the draft is stupid

  13. ATrain Says:

This team was in several games.. Lost most by 3 or less…
Really. That was with a new coach, no Offensive Coordinator, new QB, who sucked, a back QB that was treat like a rag doll. And no offensive line..

    ESPN SUCKS!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  14. Bucfan4life Says:

Stop it with the d linemen talk. Last time we had the number one pick was 30 years ago and there is a potential franchise QB right there for the taking.

Mayock has said after the first two QBs there isn’t an NFL starter in that group. So tired if having guys like Glennon as our QB. I think the Bics will suck next year because they haven’t effectively addressed all of the holes that have been created since L&L arrived. However, being a long term project, you have to take the QB with this first pick. There will not be another JW next season and who knows, they may not even have the first overall pick again. Top 5 seems almost a certainty though. Maybe Joe could do an article the first week of May breaking down the top 5 prospects for 2016 will be.

  15. Phil Says:

If the Bucs draft Winston I don’t see them going 0-16 but if it will get rid of Lovie I could endure one more year of suffering. In my option Lovie is the worst coaching hire ever made in the history of the Bucs. I had hoped they would have fired him this year.

  16. Buc1987 Says:

This team is 2-3 years away from doing anything…

  17. SeattleBuc Says:

We did go all offense in last years draft. Yes our OL sucks and Glennon is a backup, at least for now. I’m just saying put Leonard Williams in with McCoy Melton, and McDonald, Jack Smith and we have a very dominant DL. Obviously Jameis and Mariota will be gone, so get next best QB available according to Koetter, then get 2 OL.

  18. flhillbilly Says:

    #5

  19. BirdDoggers Says:

The Bucs are not an 0-16 team. Even the near talentless teams under Raheem managed to win a few games. The four letter network continues to spew garbage.

  20. bucs4lyfe Says:

I think glennon is an awful quarterback and even if we didn’t draft Winston or mariota we’d win atleast 3 games with him. that’s an insult, even with the bad offensive line last year we won 2 games with no play caller lol so we’ll be worst than last year with dirk koetter what?

  21. Espo Says:

I’d love to have Williams on our line, but we NEED one of those two qbs.

  22. Bill Says:

Aggregated opinions are worthless. Nobody thinks they will lose to a 2-14 team with a rookie QB, but a handful will. Simply stated, expect the unexpected, because it will happen.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Winless with Winston?…..and Joe says trade down in 16…..because we already have our “savior”…..even a rookie QB should win one game….but a savior?….surely more.

  24. Captain Stagger Says:

This isn’t an 0-16 team, but we have an 0-16 coach.

  25. 98PickJameis Says:

You guys might think I’m crazy but with a new QB and at least 2 new OL in this draft or 3 we can have a top 10 to top 5 offense next year. And to everyone thinking of going Dline with the first pick, I have a little history for you. Just last year, jadaveon clowny #1 pick Houston. They were in the same hole we are in now and they went Dline. How did that turn out? I mean bridge water isn’t as good as Jameis is but he was good enough for the #1 pick and could’ve turned the Texans offense around, but everyone thought he’d be better with watt. I didn’t see the Texans going .500 or over last year and they didn’t even have as amazing a pass rush as they said it would. That’s just my opinion.

  26. gotbbucs Says:

Leonard Williams is the 2nd most over-hyped player in this draft, trailing only Marcus Mariota.

A team that would use the #1 pick in the draft on a DT when there is a true difference making QB on the board deserves to lose for a decade.

  27. Pickgrin Says:

0-16 this year sounds about as credible as Herm saying Bucs would go to the Super Bowl last year.

  28. Lou. Says:

    @ Pickgrin:

You mean to tell me that the Bucs DIDN’T go to the Super Bowl last year???

    What happened?

  29. rayjay1122 Says:

    (E)xtreme
    (S)impletons
    (P)redicting
    (N)onsense

If we draft Winston and go 0-16 I will reimburse Erik for the Jersey that he buys 87. Erik, don’t bother saving your receipt because 0-16 is not going to happen! Those buffoons on the Simpletons network are on drugs for sure! That is a laughable set of predictions.

  30. SAMCRO Says:

Hmm… the same reporters who think the Bucs will stink up the joint this season are the same ones who picked our QB for us this year too. You know they made their prognostications assuming Winston would be our QB, I wonder if they knew it would be Mariota, or the trade down scenario instead, if that would of made any difference in their picks?

It just kills me that they are all clamoring for the Bucs to take the polarizing Winston, and then they show no respect that he can win any games with what appears to be the softest schedule in years. smh

  31. Supersam Says:

If Winston turns the ball over like he did in college i could easily see us not winning a game, and Lovie and Licht would be gone and Winston probably traded for nothing, then it’s back to square one.

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“This is borderline absurd. The Bucs lost so many close games last year …” – JOE

Actually, think about the damage they’ve done since the season ended. The addition by subtraction thing is a myth.

They already had holes, and they created more of them. The only signings so far have been depth at best, and injury prone players at that.

While Dirk may make some difference this year, it won’t be much because of the offensive line. EVEN if they fill two holes there with talented rookies, it will take time for those rookies to adjust to the NFL and develop properly, and considering at best they will 2nd and 3rd round picks (AT BEST) because the first round pick will be quarterback, it ain’t pretty.

If Dirk and possibly a quarterback with no offensive line going to make enough difference to compensate for the holes created on defense?

    Probably not.

And since the team, roster-wise, has gotten worse, and we only won two games last year, then going winless is certainly possible.

  33. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Not that I want to go dline with the first pick (better be QB), but you need a history lesson as well. Such as Lovie picking offensive linemen in the first round, always a bust in the past. Or QB…also always a bust in the past.

If anything, history suggests we go defense because Lovie has mostly done well picking defense in the first round.

But again…he better not this time. It’s worth taking the risk on a QB.

  34. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

“This isn’t an 0-16 team, but we have an 0-16 General Manager.

    Fixed that for you.

  35. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

NOONE is predicting the bucs go 0-16, these were all analyst predicting their own teams record,

just like we bucs fans say hmm, we can beat the saints here or the rams there, every individual analyst is going to look at their teams game against us and be like hmmm, we should be able to win this one. Compiling all those individuals picks is certainly not a way to predict a season

Noone would actually predict us to go 0-16 lol

  36. passthebuc Says:

If he goes 0-10, there will be a new manager and GM before season end.
The NFL analyst has them going 3-13
As much as I am not hopeful that Winston is the answer. I think the 2nd year in Lovie’s defense will provide at least 7 wins. I love the optimism surrounding Winston but I think once the money starts rolling in he balloons to 270 lbs and becomes a non event. I hope I am wrong.

  37. TheShaz Says:

We are 2-14 until the Bucs themselves pull themselves out of the pit.

    I also doubt a 0-16.

Lets start with some HOME WINS, Ray Jay used to strike fear in opponents. No longer. Many of the losses last year were very close games and you have to factor in lack of OC and horrible QB play to be the root cause of most of the losses. The defense wasn’t bad but the offense put the defense on the field for a long, long time.

We will have an experienced OC.
We might have a dynamic QB (ask me in 7 days).

There are still holes to fill, but I am just asking for improvement over 2-16. Gimmie 8-8 and I will be happy, 9-7 or better and I will be estatic. It is not far fetched.

    2013 KC Chiefs: 2012 (2-14), 2013 (11-5)
    2004 SD Chargers: 2003 (4-12), 2004 (12-4)
    2008 Miami Fin’s: 20074 (1-15), 2008 (11-5)
    1999 Indy Colts: 1998(3-13), 1999 (13-3)
    2004 Steelers: 2003 (6-10), 2004 (15-1)
    1999 Rams: 1998 (4-12), 1999 (13-3) * Tough memory on that NFC Championship game

There are a TON of teams that went 1-15 / 2-14 / 3-13 to 8-8 or better. Because of the salary cap. Teams can go from the OUTHOUSE to the PENTHOUSE pretty fast. Now for the Bucs to have a turnaround that got them into the playoffs…..It would be amazing. But I would be happy with 8-8 or something very close to it.

  38. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

With Lovie, nothing is impossible. Especially 0-16

  39. mjc Says:

The Bucs were a last second throw from being 1-15. Has the Licht and Lovie really improved anything from 2014.

    No improvement in OL
    No improvement in DL
    No improvement in Secondary
    Lateral move at LB
A young QB (Jameis or Marcus) behind a bad OL – disaster

The only real improvement id the OC. But Lovie will likely handcuff him as he has done with all his former OC.

  40. Jacko101 Says:

If we go 0-16 I would talk crap to you daily because you wanted Winston. At least we would get a chance to get Joey Bosa

  41. gotbbucs Says:

    @ supersam

What would you rather have, an interception 30 yards down field or a strip sack in the backfield? Mariota has about as many fumbles as Winston has picks. Get some new material, please.

  42. LargoBuc Says:

Whats funny is that the Titans, Jags and Redskins will beat us. Maybe the Jags will because they will be better than people think. But the Titans have far less talent than us and we kicked the spit outa Washington last season. I hope we get to make RG3 look like a lil bich again.

  43. ScottinDaytona Says:

Like a lot of people playing devils advocate, wouldn’t TB taking someone other than #5 or #8 say we believe Glennon is our guy? The franchise QB is one of the most important guys on your team. I would think they would not go qb in round 2 to get a qb, you have to start addressing the oline with studs, ASAP. Oh yeah, by the way, they will be locking in that franchise qb with the top pick.

  44. mac Says:

    6-10…

We will beat Tennessee, St. Louis, Atlanta (once), Jacksonville, Houston and Chicago…

    That’s it…

If Winston is a total bust it may be 0-16…

  45. iamkingsu Says:

Who cares what ESPN says?? Because some people there think Jeff Tedford is our off. Coord. lol. If they only knew he didn’t call not 1 play for us last year smh

The narrative will switch at that company when we start off fast with the weak early schedule though. Then they will go into how they had no off. Coordinator last year and how many close games they lost. Its coming

  46. iamkingsu Says:

    @the shaz

I already made those comments a couple months ago when everyone on here mocked lovie for saying we are “on the verge”. You left out last year’s texans and the colts from Luck’s rookie year. Which makes 3 teams in a row who finished 2-14 went on to finish 9-7 or better the folowing year

  47. NJBucsFan Says:

“If this did happen, the Bucs going winless, not only would Lovie Smith’s job be in dire jeopardy, but Joe would join the “trade-down” crowd (for 2016). That’s because Tampa Bay already would have found its quarterback savior.”

Wouldn’t the “savior” be talented enough to push us to at least 1 win? If this happens it will be due to the “savior” being a bust

  48. SAMCRO Says:

    @gotbbucs

It took Mariota 41 games to accumulate those fumbles but it only took Winston 27 games to throw 28 INT’s, and 4 lost fumble himself. Had Winston played 41 games we can almost assume he would of had at least 41 INT’s.

Really could not care less what a bunch of idiots predict. First of all, anyone who engages in game predictions in March is, by definition, an idiot and a douchebag. Only slightly above them on the moron food chain are those who pay attention to what those idiots think.
