A bunch of Bucs fans are willing themselves and chewing glass hoping somehow Jason Licht has a change of heart and drafts quarterback Marcus Mariota.
One reason Joe is on the Jameis Winston bandwagon? Winston looks like a pro quarterback. Then Joe started doing research, started talking to folks at Shrine Game practices, Super Bowl events, the NFL Scouting combine, and chatting with other NFL contacts. Few told Joe that Mariota was the superior man (unless one factored in the ever-popular off-field issues).
Cool cat Peter Schrager, of Fox Sports, recently ran into a standard NFL type who was confused by the hype over Mariota.

Winston and Manziel are not even close to being similar. If we would have taken JF last year, we would be needing a QB again this year. At least we got Evans instead. Now we need to grab the QB and Winston is that guy. Yes, I agree that Joe was wrong in assessing Manziel but not Winston.

If I were Joe, I would be in Winstons corner, but not as a fan, but as a professional business owner.
Joe’s a “Media Guy”, think about the next 5 years of topics Joe will have to write about. This will bring in more traffic, more $$$, better for everyone. We draft Mariota or a DE, well, not so much diva and media attentive.

Everyone has an opinion and some people get angry at those who do not agree with them. That is human nature. I prefer that we pick Winston but I respect differing opinions. I get a little tired of the Winston haters who hurl venom at him and do not make arguments against him for on the field issues but that is your right. Who knows what the Bucs are going to do? 1. The punishment for this violation is that they have to pay the amount back. Winston already did this, plus he was suspended games from the baseball team. If you think Jimbo didn’t know what went down, then, you sound highly gullible.

Why is it so ridiculous? They are all quarterbacks. The fans were divided by all three of them. Ask 87 how divided the fan base was over Freeman. He made a list! It was a long, long off season fighting in all three cases. There is a lot in common in the last three off seasons.

It about finding who the coaches and scouts think is the best QB in the draft. Not who I think is. Not who you think is. Not what analysts think. It’s about OBP. They did the research, and if they take him, they are clearly comfortable with any questions about on or off the field.

Watch the TMZ video of Jameis in Publix. It’s a little over 1 minute long and it follows him from the time he entered the store to the time he left. What’s amazing is that he walks right past a small line of customers at the seafood section, is handed a bag, and leaves. Conspicuously, the process of placing an order is completely missing. The logical conclusion is that this event was organized in advance.
Publix claims they asked their employees about it, and incredibly, no one admitted involvement. Should that surprise anyone?

For every coach/GM, draft expert or guru, etc. that you find that favors Winston you will find one that prefers Mariota. And for every one that prefers Mariota you can find one that likes Winston
For me, I’ll stick with the ones that I trust because of their experience. Chris Landry, Bill Polian, Jon Gruden, Mike Mayock, Jeff Fisher, Tony Dungy, all of whom prefer Mariota. Guys that know the NFL because of being involved in it, not just some website talking head or writer

Winston is possibly the most Polarizing player to EVER enter the NFL draft, and he has nobody but himself to blame for that. Why in the world would any owner, GM, or head coach want that on their roster? People that think that his questionable behavior will stop as he gets older are very naive. He will always be a distraction to his team and a possible embarassment. The team that he plays for will always have a divided fan base and he will always consider himself bigger than his team or league. His enormous ego will hurt him and his team on and off of the field and he will never live up to expectations. He will find that playing QB in the NFL is much more difficult than playing in the ACC and will implode under his own failures. I give him 3-5 years in the league maximum

Im being absolutely honest here and not trying to rile anyone up, but I do not believe that Mariota is even a top 15 player in this draft. This is just my opinion.
Could he get drafted in the first 15 picks, sure, but QB’s get over drafted almost every year. The only reason why I think he has a chance to get drafted somewhere around pick 10 is because Chip Kellyis an idiot and could trade up and the Cleveland Browns are probably stupid enough to use 1st round picks in consecutive years on a QB. If neither of those teams decide to take him the slide could be on.
I’m sure someone will have a snotty remark in response and I cant wait to see who throws it out, but if you’re going to do it put some thought behind why a spread-option QB is suddenly going to buck the trend for all the failures that came before him and succeed.
The NFL will chew him up and spit him out.

Folks can sit here all day and all night banging out their love or hate for Mariota and Winston, but in the long and short of it, it doesn’t mean squat. The only opinions that matter are the ones in OBP. It may be kind of fun voicing our opinions here and debating other folks but the only thing constructive happening here is we are all making the Joes a lot of money.

She said she felt coerced to leave Potbellies with Jameis and friends. Her own friends testimony is that she was asked by Erica asking if she should leave with him. Her friend said yes and she left.
First she said a short dreaded guy gave her an unknown shot, then it was a caucasian guy, now it’s 6’4″ Jameis. Oh yeah, initially her attacker was 5’9″ 240.

Actually JM it’s not just the fan base. Fameis is the the face on the cover of ESPN the Mag’s draft issue out this week. They profiled him.
The caption under his pic says “This year’s most polarizing player”.
He will be that throughout the rest of his career. He taunts opposing fans and has a “swagger” that some here love that others find arrogant and show boating.
Whatever we’ll all have to hope he is the winner and the next Tom Brady that the Winstonites promise to offset all the undesirable features of his “polarizing” personality.
This polarization btw is not simply because of rape allegations. Showboating has always drawn boos and jeers except for the team that is playing the showboat…as long as the showboat wins. If Fameis struggles or tosses ints like he did in college then we’re in for a long long bitter divisive battle on this board and elsewhere.
Let’s hope his play is as productive as his mouth. As Buc fans we must cheer for him if he’s our pick.

It’s just not his mouth, but his actions and established pattern of questionable and controversial behavior. He put on the aire of knowing that he can do anything he wants and get away with it, and so far that has been the case.
My fear is that the Jameis we all saw at the end of the Rose Bowl is the real Jameis, throwing temper tantrums, screaming at coaches and players and acting like a 6 year old. Or the one we saw early in the game getting totally discombobulated when he was totally confused by Oregon’s coverage schemes. The Winston PR machine has been working in high gear to make everybody think that he is the second coming of Mr. Rogers, but he is who he is and a person’s true character always will eventually come out. And if it comes out after the Bucs draft him then it will be too late and then they will be stuck with it, good or bad

if I ask u to describe the events of a night of drinking repeatedly, there will be inconsistencies in your story each time it’s told. I bet if I asked you to describe someone you never met before that night if drinking you would guess their height and weight wrong too. If you felt like you had been drugged and tox screens showed u hadn’t that doesn’t mean you lied, just that you’re wrong. If you try think the reason for your hang over headache is that someone must have hit you in the head, you may be wrong, but that doesn’t mean you’re a liar. And as far as BAC goes, that means very little. Two people could have the exact same BAC and one of them could appear sober while the other looks stumbling drunk. Remember EK is the only one who had to give her story repeatedly allowing for the possibility of inconsistencies. It’s hard to be inconsistent when you only tell your story once. I’m not saying I believe her, just that nothing at all has been proven either way (except that TPD screwed up the investigation). Jameis is innocent. I will believe that until it’s proven otherwise, but in no way was anyone PROVEN to be a liar.

The pick that shows up here most frequently is him shushing the fans. I think 87 told me that was the Miami game a bitter rivalry.
If you read about his upbringing in the various profiles when he was a little leaguer his father had to repeatedly chastise him for running in front of the other kids to make the play.
87 finds him a kindred spirit because 87 self ID’s as a show off when he was younger.
That’s our biggest hope. That Fameis has just been immature when he’s done all of this jumping on tables to scream the internet meme…that was showing off…Fameis himself has said that’s why he did it.

And, then reversing course again, and claiming she was drugged in the documentary? What exactly would you categorize that as?

You young dudes need to understand a lot of this is generational. OK let’s stipulate that Fameis is not guilty of rape nor has he been charged. Let’s admit that some, IMO the minority are allowing their racism to cloud their judgement.
But IMHO a HUGE component of the dislike for Fameis is generational! Perhaps a story will illustrate. Bob Trumpy who was a great TE for the Bengals Perhaps some of you younger dudes remember him as a broadcaster.
He played for the Bengals from the late 60’s to the mid 70’s. In his rookie year Paul Brown was still alive and coaching the Bengals..a team that Brown founded.
Trumpy scored a TD and spiked the football. That custom was just getting stared. According to Trumpy Brown walked over to Trumpy on the sidelines and quietly but emphatically said, “The next time you score act like you’ve been there before!”
My take on trash talking is this. Many times it’s actually a sign of weakness, a player trying to pump himself up and make HIMSELF believe he’s great.
Sometimes it’s totally stupid as in a player standing over another player he’s just creamed with a great hit, signifying, while his team is trailing by 3 TD’s late in the 4th. Spare me please.
Sometimes it’s just having fun. All of us have played in pickup games with trash talking and smiling and just having fun.
Hopefully Fameis falls into that last category. I certainly do not believe he “needs” to showboat or brag to pump himself up. I think he truly believes in his talent and why not. He’s always been the greatest athlete in all of his settings. It’ll be fun to see him go against NFL defenses and not ACC defenses or one of those Pac 12 defenses people here seem to love to deride.
That didn’t work out so well for Fameis.
In my fantasies Fameis grows up, gets some maturity and adds some class to his personality as well. If he does all of it in the spirit of just funnin’ people I’m down with that.

This is so not going to end well. We’ll get a couple of years of interesting stories and inconsistent football play from Mr. Winston. Excuses will be made ranging from “he never had an offensive line”, “no strong running back play”, and “he was just trying to do too much”. Once Lovie is fired after year 3 we’ll hear about a new system, offensive coordinator, qb coach, etc. Bottom line, there is nothing this kid shows me that makes me believe he’ll be handle the pressures of the nfl, and the tough transition that all rookie qbs face. He’s not super accurate, he won’t move well against an NFL rush, and those underneath LBs in coverage will sneak up on him. I’ll root for him because I’m a diehard Bucs fan, and I pray that I’m wrong, but I just don’t see success for him at this level.

Winston has more than off field concerns. He has on field things he needs to work on too.. For Bucs sake I hope he is great but I have a bad feeling on him…Too much Drama around him, Too much Ego, and field problems you can work with in college but NFL different game.

I do not go to church. I’m a 67 year old dude who still occasionally fires up a bowl. I’m hardly a prude.
Fameis is off to a bad start but he hasn’t done anything that will prevent him from redeeming himself with a heavy dose of growing up.
But you play the church or choirboy card which I consider hyperbole. I will play the cabbie punching players, or the guys who trash a house so badly and disturb their entire neighborhood with their rude thoughtless behavior, or the Jerramy Stevens losers as embarrassments.
There are plenty of players with class and poise. One of the most delightful parts of our SB team was how they represented. Sapp aside, and he was certainly no criminal just a jerk to Buc fans…most of that team would fit your definition of choirboys by the time they played in the NFL regardless of any youthful indiscretions.
DB55 was and is totally classy. Warrick Dunn with his program of giving homes to single moms…Mike Alstott coaching at a small high school…Ronde..Lynch..were all great faces of our franchise.
Don’t get me wrong. If we give Fameis his presumption of innocence in the rape case…the rest of his actions were simply those of an entitled showoff who had yet to grow up. He “can” grow past those actions.
Aquib Talib and his ilk are cancers to the league and the teams they rep. I don’t care what skill level Talib brings.

Atrain…I have no more concern for him than any other player. Don’t believe rape accusation and other issues are silly and overblown by media. I like the ego and swagger..he is confident and will lead this team. We have never had a true franchise QB…. It’s time.

Kinda peculiar to me,Hardy gets 10 games and hardly any mention of his actions and the fact that many on this site wanted him in the Bay(me included)but many of the same folks continue to whine about something that will be reality for them here shortly. When Joe put up his Ali comparison I was quick to point out that Ali was having fun in the beginning. By the end I suspect he was just selling tickets. Obviously Apollo Creed was based on Ali’s perceived behavior and I agree with Stallone’s take.
Tom Ederington is a former journalist who was in Miami when Ali was still Clay. He pointed out that Ali was actually a quiet thoughtful person away from the media.
One of Ali’s influences according to Ali himself was the wrestler “Gorgeous George”. GG was famous in the 50’s and I was just a little tyke then. I had heard of him but never really followed pro wrestling.
And so do we believe WWE “performers” are really trash talking or putting on a show. Ali was putting on a show and having fun.
I once covered East Tennessee State basketball. They had a 6-4 player who was the state high jump champ….he could fly. One game he goes down the lane and soars over a 7 footer for an amazing slam. His reaction mirrored that of all the fans…stunned amazement at his gift. It wasn’t in your face to the 7 footer…it was damn…I can’t even believe I was just able to do that.
I hope Fameis can come around to realizing he’s been incredibly blessed and again to those who are given a lot a lot is expected. I support him enjoying his own talent as much as the fans who watch him enjoy it. I don’t support it however if he thinks it makes him better than other people in anything but sports or if it makes him feel entitled.
He’s saying all the right things the past month. I’m hopeful it’s not just to cement his #1 pick next week. I’ve heard him say he’s sad that so many people consider him a sociopath and he’s sorry for contributing to that impression. Good on him. Let’s hope he continues that growth pattern.

@MarshallU I don’t really care what Publix says. When I first heard the story, I knew it was a hookup. Anyone can watch the video and see that that was the case. No amount of PR on their part will change what I saw. I myself love the crab legs at Publix…I plan to order some on draft day.

not only is it generational but it’s cultural. Not too many kids from the slums can get rich and famous and remain humble. Especially when they are at the top of their profession. Understand that in many cases these kids have been told that they’ll never amount to anything and as they look around their surroundings it’s hard to believe otherwise.
Idk I think you have to walk a mile in people’s shoes before you judge them for who they are. Winston said growing up “they” wanted Michael Vick type qbs which he wasn’t so he showed them that he can win even though he wasnt a typical dare I say black qb. He reminds me of warren moon and the trails and tribulations he went through. Same as Ali, persecuted to the end because of who they are, where they come from and what they sound like.

To be fair, all we know of Winston is in, and of, the media. Maybe he’s like that with everyone. Maybe he isn’t. His teammates love him.
I think some, maybe even you, will find him having moments where he’s actually quite likable when he starts doing pressers. He has always shared praise with his teammates.

In the article from thebaycave it goes in depth about the entire rape allegation and what I found most interesting is that according to the article EK never pressed charges therefore the officer closed the case due to insufficient cooperation from the accuser.
Then in the story they discussed a separate incident that happened where a girl was raped, she had bruises around her neck from being choked and she never wanted to talk about the situation. The two stories are vastly different and I found it interesting comparing the two cases how the family and victims reacted so differently.

I might just have my wife dump a bucket of Gatorade over my head after the pick is in. Because it’s been a looong 3 months of battling in here. I have been reading your “articles” for a while now. I don’t come t on this or any other site mainly because I’m not the word smith that some profess to be.
I do like the fact that you seem to at least have the ability to question yourself from time to time but I don’t get how you can consider someone like Jim Brown a personal hero yet have a problem with Winstons cockiness or arogense or what ever you want to call it.
I’ve been a buccaneer fan since the beginning. I will always be a buc fan no matter who we have at QB.
I am not one of the “young guys” as you put it but I do like confident people.
I have spent a lot of time around so called ameture athletes & believe it or not what Winston has done is the norm not the exception. Does he think he is intitled? Absolutely! But so does 95% of every other collage athlete in this country. Do we demonsie the majority? No we don’t & the reason is simple they were never on top of the pyramid like Winston was.
I wish all of our athletes were Tim Tebow with the way they handle themselves unfortunately the vast majority are not. most are somewhere in between Jim Brown ( who has been accused of the same thing Winston was & convicted on two assalt charges) & Jameis Winston who has done the things that many other “entitled” athletes do on a daily basis.

bottom line is a majority of the things you’re classifying as lies truelly are not. A few may be lies. But I am applying the same criteria to her as to Jameis. PROVEN means in a court of law, not the court of public opinion. If she were a proven liar she would have had charges brought up against her. I can say you are a liar. I can say I am a liar. I was at the National Championship game in Dallas and Mariota was the best player on the field. Ohio State was the much better TEAM but he was the best player. I like his TD to INT ratio the best, though. He is an amazing athlete and I can only imagine his QB scrambles in the NFL. If he can stay injury free he could redefine the position. And finally he beat Winston in the Rose Bowl. What better indication of their future success could there be?

Years of drought without a leader at the position and you choose to pass the opportunity up…implying “maybe next year”? There are no guarantees at any position in the draft. But I wasn’t in Dallas on that night but what I observed from the confines of my home was a kid that appeared frail and somewhat overwhelmed by what proved to the closet thing to an nfl type defence that he had seen last season. Never mind the performance of the buckeyes running and 3rd string QB.

@nole on sat bucc. On Sunday- you are right about Ohio States running back. He had the best game. If Mariota had all of his weapons though, the Buckeyes would have been in trouble. Oregon was missing their best wide receiver, their top tight end. Their top cornerback was out. And they still came back. He had no running game. He was better than Cardale Jones, though. Anyway, I hadn’t been drinking and he is going to be a great pro.
