Chucky Says Glennon Is His Pick

April 22nd, 2015
"Hey, Bisaccia. That's right. I'd win another damn Super Bowl with that beanpole. He's a bigger, smarter Griese."

“Hey, Bisaccia. That’s right. I’d win another damn Super Bowl with that beanpole. He’s a bigger, smarter Griese.”

Bucs Super Bowl winning coach Chucky, who if still in charge would be going bananas trying to swing a Phillip Rivers trade right now, says he’s unsure about these soon-to-be rookie quarterbacks and the Bucs.

The Orlando Sentinel penned Chucky’s quotes from a pre-draft teleconference this week.

“I don’t know who best fits Tampa Bay right now. It would be a tough decision if they go with a quarterback,” Gruden said. “I like Mike Glennon personally.”

Gruden was complimentary of both Winston and Mariota during his hour-long teleconference and specifically mentioned Winston’s arm talent, familiarity in a complex offensive system as well as his “incredible courage and ability to thrive “on adversity” as reasons why he liked the former FSU quarterback. Gruden worked with both top prospects closely during “Gruden’s QB Camp,” a popular shown on ESPN in which the former coach and respected quarterback guru works closely with draft-eligible signal callers.

Chucky is not sold the Bucs draft a QB next week, and it’s no surprise that he likes a veteran QB (Glennon) ahead of a rookie, though perhaps this Glennon Mob line of thinking is why Chucky is no longer a head coach in the NFL.

Damn, Chucky and Greg Schiano must have all kinds of cuddly fun watching Glennon when they study film together at Chucky’s Tampa office.

I hear Dirk Koetter has been working Glennon out a lot lately. Not sure what it means but it sure seems like they are not ready to get rid of Glennon.

  8. miken Says:

I am and have never ben in the MG Mob, but heres the deal…. The kid looked average last year, and the O line was as bad as nfl team in the last few years, but whats an even bigger deal is the play calling was as bad as its ever been in the history of the league, so if you could look average under those circumstances and you are 24, then you have a future in the league. Turn on the tape to his visit to seatle… not bad. I’m not saying hes a future hall of famer or you don’t go qb at 1… i’m just saying on a real team with real coaching, he could be a top 10 qb.

  9. Clodhopper Says:

Winston or Glennon or next year. In that order. No Rivers. No Mariota please.

Or can we start saying THIS year now that the schedule is out?

  10. Nick Says:

@A Gator that loves the Bucs

I promise you that’s not true since it would be a clear violation of league rules.

  11. Eric Says:

Chucky got pro bowl years out of Gannon (multiple times – after never making it before), Johnson (plus the Super Bowl), and Garcia.

When QB’s play their best under a certain coach, guru is an appropriate nickname.

Winner is another, as in best at that in buc’s history.

Still Gruden hate after all these disasters……….SMH.

Yeah Chucky would love Rivers. And likely we would be 6-2 at home, Jon’s average while he was here.

  12. A Gator that loves the Bucs Says:

Woooah………..I have been reading everything I can on both QBs from Any journalistic source I can find so that I will be better prepared to support either one but I just found this and it scares me a little.
    ………
What these team officials say about the Buccaneers makes total sense. It’s impossible not to be extremely nervous about taking someone like Winston No. 1 overall. Winston would make a sort of history if he were to go No. 1. No player picked in that spot, in the history of the draft, has ever been suspended by two different coaches. Winston was suspended by both his football and baseball coaches.

  26. downtowndc Says:

Surely, the new head coach of the bc lions lobbied hard for Derek Carr, with Josh as the veteran back up. Obviously, if he had, he was overridden. Should we already have our “franchise qb”?

That’s not saying Carr is a superior talent to either 2015 prospect…but it is unusual for a new regime of a famously “4-12 football team” to go all offense in a draft, but not take a qb.

The decision making process at the quarterback position is historically suspect, both for the organization and the current staff.

Are we really going to be set at the position for “10-15 years” with either prospect, when we haven’t even glanced at the line, have four backup running backs, a no name crew at wr 3 and dramatic turnover on a porous defense?

Will a non-productive 2014 draft and disastrous free agent run be corrected for a decade with one roll of the dice?

    Been here before.

I’ve always believed this was the case and the main reason the Bucs didn’t want Tedford back.

Lovie’s basement sessions were a big ruse… he never wanted a rookie QB.

Narcissism demands self glorification with social media. Like selfy sticks…what a rediculous concept albeit someone is making a fortune because of them. Who cares about gaining hordes of followers? Followers does not make someone more important. This is the closest to social media anyone will ever find me on. Our society is really becoming a bunch of degenerates.

you mean like Russell Wilson or Andrew luck or ryan tannehill. i’ll throw out another name for you. mike glennon who played 3 games into his rookie season. this is the NFL the best player plays period end of story rookie or veteran doesn’t matter just who is the better player. 2 years on the roster all we could say is he is better than freeman and mccown. rookies beat out veterans quarterbacks every freakin year

  33. robert 9 Says:

    #mikeglennon=superbowl

  34. robert 9 Says:

    @ 4lyfe

lovie played mcclown last year over glennon……so we know it’s NOT REALLY a matter of who the better QB is, rather who fits lovies agenda

  35. bucrightoff Says:

Mike Glennon can be as good as Joe Flacco, at least. Glennon’s numbers from his first 16 games compare well to Flacco’s best seasons. But Flacco plays for a well run (if unseemly) organization. Glennon plays for a very poorly run organization. Is it Glennon’s fault the team around him sucks? Likewise, is Flacco really great, or are the Ravens well run and field great teams consistently that makes Flacco’s job easier?

Glennon really has never gotten a decent look to start in a decent situation. He’s had two dumpster fires to deal with and did as well as can be expected. No, he may not be Aaron Rodgers, but surrounded by a good team and he can be successful. Surrounded by crap and like most QBs he won’t have a chance.

  36. bucs4lyfe Says:

lovie played mccown because glennon wilted under the pressure while mccown was injured there was no need to go with mccown, switch to glennon go back to mccown then switch back glennon. glennon lost the starting job, he wasnt mentally advanced enough to overcome not having an experienced play caller and that may explain why he wilted and fell apart but don’t use that one situation to try and disprove the simple truth please and thank you.

rookies beat out veterans quarterbacks every freakin year and that’s a fact not a statement. glennon is only a vet because of time in the nfl not because of his experience and knowledge so yea HE can be beat out easily especially when he starts the season and is losing games as usual

  37. kaput Says:

Glennon sucks, and everyone with half a brain knows it.

    Stop the nonsense, please.

  38. BirdDoggers Says:

It’s hard to get an accurate read on Gruden’s comments about a player. He loves everyone he talks about, especially veteran players. Gruden never liked the idea of putting the ball in a rookie QBs hands. I think Lovie has a similar line of thinking. Lovie wants his defense to control games and the QB to make smart decisions with the football. A rookie QB doesn’t fit Lovie’s MO. However, it’s tough to sell Glennon to a disgruntled fan base. A rookie will help sell tickets and give the team a player they haven’t had since Testaverde or Freeman, a promising franchise QB. Hopefully this time it will work out.

  39. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Glad to see I’m not the only one who sees more potential in Glennon than career backup it trade fodder for a 7th round pick. Obviously I’d start Phillip Rivers over Glennon too (if anything comes of those rumors), but I honestly believe Glennon + Koetter will make a lot of Bucs fans forget about passing on Mariota and Winston in a few more days. Embrace your poor man’s Matt Ryan/Joe Flacco as you will embrace Leonard Williams in a few days 🙂

  40. Eric Says:

Chucky would like Glennon right up until he ran out of bounds or went into his safe mode.

Then he would chew him out and send him to the dog house forever.

  41. robert 9 Says:

“lovie played mccown because glennon wilted under the pressure while mccown was injured”

if you believe that/take lovie at his word…. I got a bridge for sale.

he pulled mcclown, gave glennon a shot…a one in a million shot with that OL and OC…..saw that he was going to get him killed and lose any trade value and/or make him gunshy and hamper his ability with a real OL and OC……..and threw mcclown back into the fire to earn his 5 mill and tank the season while evaluating the rest of the roster.

  42. Barry Says:

  45. downtowndc Says:

Whether he caused it or not, at least the Rutgers guy knew he had trouble on horizon and addressed the position. If we move on from that pick next week, then we’re making that selection because we’re a year late.

Both prospects will create splash plays, probably from the onset of preseason. But we earned the #1 with our poor personnel decisions last go.

I’m not sure that Schiano/Glennon + khalil mack, Anthony Barr or aaron Donald aren’t better than 7-8-1.

A shiny #1 in the hands of this front office doesn’t mean as much as strong personnel moves in year one.

  56. Jordan Says:

Teddy Bridgewater hasn’t beaten a winning team yet. His wins come against teams that were a combined 29-67-1. That puts his “barely better than Glennon” numbers into perspective. It is crazy what a difference a higher draft pick does to one’s perceived talent. Glennon is much better than Sam Bradford, costs 20 times less, yet no one would consider trading a first rounder for him. Trent Richardson is another example of this “perceived” talent attributing to one’s higher return value.

  66. BrianBucs Says:

At this point, Mike Glennon is a much better QB than Winston or Mariota. With his previous NFL seasons of playing and coaching he’s the one that’s ready to play. Bucs should either trade out and build their team or draft Williams, then if Glennon doesn’t work out draft your QB next year or trade for one. Both Winston and Mariota are very overrated and come with many red flags.
As far as a Rivers trade, that would be more for a team that thinks they are ready to win and contend now. However, the smart move is to always get a QB that has played in the NFL already and you know what he can do there. Every rookie QB is an unproven crapshoot and these two are no exception

Having said that, Gruden may be correct. Mike Glennon has never been able to show his best here because of the horrible offensive systems and the NFL’s worst offensive line. He may be a real diamond in the rough. That’s why so many other NFL teams want him and so many other head coaches woul;d love to have him on their roster.
The wise move may be to make Glennon your starter and either draft somebody like Petty or Manion to develope, or sign an experienced free agent to help mentor him. That gives Bucs lots more options with that #1 pick to get more players and fill more holes

Rivers is a good option, please 3 years of a proven QB and pick up some other picks or Quality players..

I hate to hear all in on Winston.. No one can take that pressure..And if he doesn’t become the greatest then the “Fans” will rebel … Look at Gruden at 8-8 the fans ran him out of town…

Winston maybe great but he can do nothing without a Line.

Glennon maybe great how will we know without a line..

He has said things that suggested this was the case in the past. I believe this is the first time he actually said it directly though. I personally don’t have a problem with it. I think it’s true, it’s not that hard to believe. Things like this happen all the time, even to people who are not star athletes. If a bartender gives you a beer on the house, do you seek out the manager and confirm it’s ok? Of course not. One of my college roommates worked at a pizza place and was constantly bringing home free stuff, am I a thief for eating it?

It was wrong to accept both morally and from an NCAA standpoint, but I think this is very similar to things most of us have done, especially at that point in life.
