“Not A Surprise To Us”

Bucs general manager Jason Licht talked about the Jameis Winston lawsuit today, and not just the fact that it exists.
No, Licht and the Bucs have looked inside the suit. “The information that came out with it was not a surprise to us,” Licht said.
So there you have it, every last detail in the lawsuit was stuff the Bucs knew about.
What that means is anyone’s guess. Despite various grilling, Licht gave no hint today that the Bucs prefer Winston with the No. 1 overall pick.

I wasn’t bothered until this franchise started getting so cozy with Winston making it seem like he was the pick but wont fully commit and wont negotiate a contract…as it gets closer to the draft everyone else in the nfl and media has mariota or Winston being drafted by the bucs. no one is this franchise has truly made it known so they could easily trade down or go defense and that bothers me. with all the needs last year they took a running back in the third and a tight end in the second lol who really knows….prepare yourself for disappointment or shock.

The Glazers are not taking Winston. If they were they would just announce it and be done until the draft. There would be no need for all the smoke screens. So the Winstonites need to slow their roll.

Why would Bucs commit now rather than pursue a trade of their # 1 pick (All Browns 10 picks in this draft ) and IF they are unable to get more value, Then pick the player they most favor?

I think MTM has a point. In addition to the normal smokescreens wouldn’t everybody connected with the Bucs be virtually obligated to say all this stuff about Fameis and how they’re fine with him?
You have the FSU fan base some of whom are rabid Fameis supporters!
Look at some of the posters here. IF the Bucs acknowledged that they didn’t select Fameis because of “character issues there would be hell to pay.
The are virtually forced to say nice things about Fameis.
Then if they select Mariota or trade down and pick up Petty or another QB they can say it was purely a football decision that filled their particular needs.

I’m sure the NFL has told the Bucs not to show their hand till the draft. Where the QBs go is the biggest storyline of the draft. More interest = more ratings = more money.

Depends on your definition of lying versus spinning. In addition there can be simple oversight.
In all the discussion about the LIghtning having a better chance this year in the playoffs because the kids have more experience and we’ve added some vets the single most important point has been overlooked by media, coaches and even the team’s captain.
They lost their number one goalie last year and the Lindbergh the backup sucked.
So some of Lovie’s “misstatements” are probably just that …misstatements.
Lovie has plenty of deficiencies but I think what you see is what you get. He is fundamentally honest which is why NFL coaches will sign on to coach for him and players like Adrian Peterson would enjoy playing for him, and why the team didn’t quit on him!
Look at RAh and Sciano…their players quit on them and established NFL coaches did not line up for jobs at OBP.

The two most succesful coaches in Bucs history say Mariota, and two time G.M. of the year Bill Polian says Mariota, so obviously we’re taking Jameis now.

Well aside from the fact that it’s more than just a “few” people who support Mariota, many for the same reason as me, the game is changing rapidly and MM is a better fit for the future of the game…I’ll certainly concede that the majority of “experts” believe that Fameis is the pick.
And again I’m on board with whatever the Bucs do, even trading down. I’ll have no problem with Fameis but my preference would be to pick MM first then move up in the 1st to get Andrus Peat.

99% of the quarterbacks in the playoffs were prostyle dropback traditional quarterbacks stop watching espn or whatever your doing and please don’t compare MM to Russell Wilson they are not the same player. Wilson is a 5th year senior who plays multiple styles and is a jeff Garcia type player because he is short

@StPeteBucsFan agree with you. Bill Parcells said many years ago that the NFL is held captive by the college game, and that is true. Colleges are also held captive by the High school programs. An awful lot of the high school programs run the spread or some form of it, if college programs want players to succeed right away, what do they do. They go to spread type offenses. If the nfl wants quarterbacks to succeed right away they will have to run some form of spread offense so the qb’s can play right away. A lot of people don’t want to hear that, but it is the way the nfl will go. As college programs go so goes the nfl.

I hear you. Yes lots of folks still believe in the old pro style drop back QB.
I do not and I’m not alone. Look at Aaron Rodgers. And before Celly rips me yes I understand just lining up in the shotgun is not the same as a “spread” offense.
But many of the coaches who support Mariota point out he was able to look to 2nd 3rd and even 4th options. I’ve watched enough tape on him to have confidence.
And again SI felt confident enough in quoting Mariota’s agent who told them that Koetter told Mariota during his visit…”Don’t worry you won’t have any trouble learning this offense when you return.”
Whether that’s the agent blowing smoke up SI’s butt will not be known until after the draft. But if Koetter is indeed planning to go with an uptempo no huddle offense much of the time it seems clear which QB is better suited.

If you watched the presser like I did. You could see it in Licht’s eyes when he was asked questions about Winston. That chuckle was also very telling.
Now I know what you meant Joe by the 2 of them glowing at Winston’s pro day.
I want to play poker with Jason Licht…he has to be the worst player ever.
The pick is Winston and everyone in that presser knew it too.

Obviously the #1 pick is what everybody is so obsessed over, but rounds 2 and 3 are actually more concerning to me. No matter who the QB is, he is going to fail if the Bucs do not make the right picks for this offensive line. I would like to see them go O-Line in rounds 2 and 3. Folks say that this draft is very deep for OL but why not try to get the very best ones you can. The success of the #1 pick I think depends on the success of the #2 and #3 pick. I don’t want to see the Buc’s shiny new toy at QB get beat to death as I saw that with Vinnie T.

My wife is a dentist and so we get lots of magazines at our office. I’m quoting from the hard copy that is out just this week. Both S.I. and ESPN released their draft issues this week.
I haven’t checked out SI online perhaps you can find it there. Then again they may be holding it back awhile in an attempt to sell more magazines.
Here’s an idea that will save you money. When you hit Publix or a drug store simply hit the magazine rack and go down to the bottom of page 60 for the quote.
And as a former journalist I’m a doubting Thomas by nature. I believe in attribution so people can judge for themselves.
This is SI saying…according to Tollner, Mariota’s agent Koetter said “You’re gonna have no problem learning this offense when you come back.”
If Tollner is anything like Drew Rosenhaus however I certainly do not blame you if you choose to dismiss it because of the source. I certainly do not take it as gospel.
The part that actually interested me most was SI’s reporting that Koetter plans to install a fast paced up tempo system. That did not come from MM’s agent and whether it’s MM or Fameis I’d love to see the Bucs do just that on offense.

I with you man. I thought gruden was seconds away from laughing at the kid. He has to be pc though. The stuff on the white board where he asked him who’s “hot” then followed up with “why didn’t you throw it to the hot?” Then comments like “get them in and out of the huddle” or “come on let’s break that huddle” or my favorite “oh so your just reading one side of the field”. Idk but I certainly didn’t come away from it thinking gruden had given his endorcement.
In contrast gruden was beaming from ear to ear with the thug. Idk obviously I don’t know shyt about football that’s why I spend my days on JBF so guys like Barry, Supersam and nybucfan can educate me.

BTW I’m neither a member of the MGM nor am I one of his haters. I do not believe he’s ever been given a chance to succeed in his two years with the Bucs.
Having said that I must admit I’m with the doubters who have posted that MGM may not be the backup for the Bucs because of Koetter’s new system.
And if the SI piece is correct about Koetter implementing an up tempo fast paced offense I’m not sure where that would leave Glennon.
But again…remember when MG8 had one of his greatest games…2 TD’s against a great Seattle defense in Seattle and where did most of the damage occur…when the Bucs ran their two minute no huddle offense. I still remember the b!tching when Schiano didn’t keep doing it in the second half.
I wasn’t here on JBF at the time but I gotta believe posters here really lit up Schiano for taking his foot off the gas pedal after MG8 torched Seattle in the no huddle.
I guess the bottom line for me is that we really don’t know what we don’t know about ole MG8. I do have faith in Koetter however to either use him properly or trade him.

Where did it say Chucky prefers Mariota? You know what completely turned me off to Mariota? When Chucky asked him why you should pick him over the “other guy” he had absolutely NOTHING the least bit positive or competitive to SAY about himself!! I mean, this is about being the FIRST overall draft pick and a ton of money, for crissakes! Cannot believe that didn’t turn Gruden completely off.

I’m not certain Gruden said he “preferred” either QB. He said good things about both of them. But the quote that got the most attention was this..
“If you don’t like Marcus Mariota, you don’t like human beings,” Gruden said.
The one common criticism of Mariota is that he spent his college career playing in a spread offense. Gruden said he’s not worried about that.
“He’s not the offensive coordinator,” Gruden said. “It’s not his fault. What they do at Oregon is very unique. That type of football is on its way to the NFL. You’re seeing more and more no-huddle offenses. You see a lot of intermediate passes from 10 yards and in, which is a big part of Oregon.
“When you watch Philadelphia [which is coached by former Oregon coach Chip Kelly] play offense, you see the Oregon Ducks. The No. 1 offense in football the last two years is Philadelphia. So the system works. Mariota can play in that system. Somebody is going to see a (6-foot-4) quarterback with 4.5 speed. This guy is quick, he’s smart, he’s the most humble, hard-working guy maybe in this draft. I want him on my team. I’ll put my system in around him. I think personally Marcus Mariota can play in any system.”

Some of you continue to express this bizarre belief that if minds were made up the Bucs would say so. Why?
1) You don’t preclude the possibility of a trade offer.
2) There is no practice or playbook advantage offered.
3) There is no need to negotiate a contract “early”. No other team does, why would we need to?
4) Something could happen. Any player in the draft could get in a car accident, be struck by a meteorite, or any number of other things. You think the Bucs should take on those risks prematurely simply because the fans and media would prefer it? Let’s stop being stupid.

Agree with all that you just posted Bill.
I would add that everybody at OBP is obligated or at least under a lot of pressure to say good things about Jameis. If they acknowledge any fears about off field concerns they risk alienating a huge chunk of their fan base..the FSU fans.
If they praise Jameis and then select Marcus or trade down they can simply claim it was a football decision based on what fits best for their team on the field.
They may or may not have already made up their minds on Fameis but if they’re picking him why say so for all the reasons you’ve just listed and if they aren’t why fire up the FSU fan base.
