Phillip Dorsett In Round 3?

April 18th, 2015

DorsettThe pride of St. Petersburg, former Bucs quarterback and current Yahoo! Sports NFL analyst Shaun King, sees Tampa Bay looking to get more explosive on Day 2 of the draft.

This might trouble another one of St. Pete’s finest, Bucs wide receiver Louis Murphy. But Joe’s not worried about their potential spat.

Twittering yesterday, King spit out a seven-round Buccaneers mock draft. He’s got the Bucs drafting Miami wide receiver Phillip Dorsett with the first overall pick of the third round.

Dorsett is a speed merchant and second-team, All-ACC selection, with 36 catches and 10 touchdowns last year. Per the Miami Herald, NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock raved about Dorsett after his Pro Day earlier this month.

“For me, the star of the day was Phillip Dorsett, a kid who didn’t have to do anything because he performed so well at the combine. What did he do today? Comes out, runs a 4.25… jumps 38 inches, 10-9 broad jump, and then looked fantastic catching the football and getting in and out of breaks. Phillip Dorsett had an outstanding day.”

Joe might vomit if the Bucs make this pick. Nothing against Dorsett, but this would be a luxury selection for a team with all kinds of hardcore needs.

Keep in mind many draft analysts believed running back Charles Sims, last year’s third-round pick, could play slot receiver at the NFL level. His hands and route running were that good.

There’s only one football, and with Vincent Jackson and Mike Evans, plus a tight end expected to be a massive contributor, 2014 second-round pick Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Joe just can’t see how the Bucs go here. Drafting Dorsett also would equate to giving up on clone Robert Herron, last year’s sixth-round pick. The regime is unlikely to do that.

Load up on offensive linemen and defensive talent after drafting a quarterback. This should not be a complicated draft for Tampa Bay.

I personally would love this pick, an additional offensive weapon, he would be the only player that could go the distance anytime, he was underutilized at the U. Ask Jameis Winston, he benefitted by Miami not throwing the ball to him in the second half against FSU. I know there are others needs, but imagine the possibility of scoring 30 in any game, ijs

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So many good players….so few picks…..even someone that Shaun King likes.

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Wisniewski is off the table. There goes our offensive line repairs this year.

  4. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Hey, Joe, how come we didn’t see an article on how NIKE signed a deal with Mariota as well?

According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Nike has signed Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota, Georgia running back Todd Gurley, Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper and Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon to endorsement contracts.

Great question: Considering the headline of the post was “Jameis Watch,” think you have your answer. Joe has been writing about Winston daily since November, when the Bucs were still in the playoff hunt. Mariota’s marketability has never been questioned. Joe wrote about that already. https://www.joebucsfan.com/2015/02/nflpa-mariota-beats-jameis-in-marketability/ Winston’s, however, is questioned repeatedly. Therefore, Joe found Winston’s Nike signing interesting enough to write about. –Joe

  5. ATrain Says:

Winston is So Bad they signed all of those players to new contact and gave Winston the money for all of them.

  6. Shayne Says:

Dorsett will not be available in the 3rd round. He’ll be a late 1st rounder or early 2nd rounder

  7. BKNYfootballhead Says:

    Is that really you, ATrain?

  8. Jordan Says:

The guys at JoeBucsFan are editorialists, not journalists BuccaneerBonzai. Entertaining to read but not unbiased.

  9. Dick2111 Says:

@Joe: “Load up on offensive linemen and defensive talent after drafting a quarterback. This should not be a complicated draft for Tampa Bay.”

Whew! Joe has seen the light.

  10. ruggyup Says:

Hey, Dick2111, you may be right but he must have seen its remnants under a bushel.. Remember we’re talking Bucs here.

  11. ATrain Says:

    Yep…

I want to see the Winston train crash and the all of the Im was wrong articles on here….

The Sun asks Winston when to rise in the morning

  12. ATrain Says:

    Where’s 87

Maybe 87 aka Winston is at a “Be A Good Boy” meeting with his people.

  13. jimmy53 Says:

It’s funny that the one guy on here that “loves” this pick calls Miami The U.

    A lil blatant homerism Rrsrq??

  14. Joseph Mamma Says:

Drafting purely for need is how a team misses out on superstars.

  15. BuccaneEric Says:

TampaBayBucFan, the Bucs defense only gave up 9 points to the Rams in the 1999 NFC title game. The Bucs offense gave up a safety. You give Shaun King to much credit!! Lol

  16. JMan Says:

    Tyler Lockett

  17. The Real Drew Says:

Pick Jamison Crowder in the 5th round, and focus on O lineman in at least 2 of the 3 preceding rounds. Crowder has slot and kick return abilities.

  18. Phillip Says:

Something is seriously wrong if King really thinks Dorsett will be available in the 3rd… I’d be running to the podium to hand in the card if that was the case for the Bucs. For those saying WR isn’t a position of need I ask this simple question.. If Vjax or Evans were to miss time who the hell are we are gonna start? If you respond with any of our remaining WR you lose instant credibility as someone who knows absolutely anything about football. Is it as big of need as our piss poor O-line? No. But it’s damn close.

I guess because it’s called Jameis Watch you can’t include all the facts or its too hard to add one line saying the other players who also signed deals at the same time.. Makes complete sense..

Are you trying to imply a difference of 5 spots makes or break whether you are marketable or not? I really hope not.

  19. Bucfan4life Says:

Why would Joe post articles about the Titans, Rams, or Browns new QB signing a deal with Nike?

  20. lurker Says:

We need to draft for Special Teams and build around the kicker.
    rd.1=kicker
    rd.2=punter
    rd.3=long snapper
    rd.4=KR/PR

  21. keepitreal Says:

    Go Falcons!

  22. WalkdaPlank Says:

Lol you will not get any “I was wrong articles” on the very off chance that Jameis is skipped. You will simply get “Joe wanted Mariota too” and that is all. Just like last year with Johnny Rehab and Bridgewater.

But who cares the Bucs need a QB.

  23. Brian D Says:

Dorsett would bbe too good to pass up with that pick. Gotta pick best player available Joe. And Jackson’s days are numbered so we need to start thinking about who is going to replace him. We need a lineman in the 2nd…but I would love to see us take Dorsett, Rashad Greene, or Tyler Lockett in the 3rd.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

Bonzai…With soooo many mocks saying it’s Winston, why would Joe bother mentioning Mariota at all when he’s not even in the running to BE our QB?

Some people want him to be in the running, but it’s just not so…

  25. BuccaneEric Says:

Lurker, you forgot the Holder in round 5!!!!!

  26. BuccaneEric Says:

I guess we could trade a few high picks next year for Tony Romo. He’s an excellent Holder.

  27. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Heron is going to havve to step up…..

  28. Pickgrin Says:

I agree that OLine has to be the focus of this draft after Winston. Have to get at least 2 good OLine players in rounds 2>4. That does leave 1 of those higher picks to go elsewhere with. Whether DE, MLB, WR, RB or Safety

Sometimes you just HAVE to go BPA regardless of position if you believe you are getting a great player for that spot’s value. Getting excellent football players on your team regardless of what position they play is the overall goal and will lead to winning. There are very few spots on the Bucs roster that could not use a potential star upgrade.

If Bucs go WR with pick #3 – I would much prefer to see Rashad Greene whose production of just under 4000 yards at FSU more than doubled that of Phillip Dorsett. + there’s that QB/WR receiver familiarity thing to consider.

Winston to Evans and Greene could be one of the best QB/WR set ups in the NFL for many years to come. Pretty well duplicates what the Noles had in 2013 with Winston, Benjamin and Greene. That worked out pretty well. 🙂

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Why would we take anyone other than Winston in the 3rd round? Seeing how Port Richey George says that’s how far he’ll slip…

Some people just aren’t the sharpest pencils in the box… in the meantime…

12 days 1 hour and 17 minutes to go until The Chosen One is ours!

  30. Arealbucsfan Says:

Wiz was signed for so cheap!!!

  31. Dewey Selmon Says:

If you are going to spend a 3rd on a wr, make sure he can return kicks. Tyler Locket can. Besides only a 2nd team ACC. If Jameis threw against ACC talent and gets mocked, than he should of been 1st team.

  32. Danati74 Says:

I also don’t believe Dorsett will be there in the 3rd. If so, I would be happy if we grabbed him. We still should go QB, LT,DE, then RG…then Safety,WR/KR, CB, and RB.

  33. lurker Says:

so which childish moron steals screennames? hmmmmmmmmmm

any “lurker” for mariota over winston is a fake. and it is obvious. including that idiotic comment about special teams that isn’t even funny, unless you are “special”. i swear the comments must be from methmike, mrspatrick, or any of the shortbus bunch.

  34. SuperSam Says:

I agree Joe here’s my mock draft, it should play out similar to this.

    1: R1P1

    QB MARCUS MARIOTA

    OREGON

    34: R2P2

    OT JAKE FISHER

    OREGON

    65: R3P1

    G LAKEN TOMLINSON

    DUKE

    106: R4P10

    168: R6P8

    DE BROCK HEKKING

    NEVADA

    193: R7P1

    OLB MICHAEL ORAKPO

    TEXAS STATE

  35. Iknowmorethanlovie Says:

Seeing as the Bucs lack speed on offense this would be a nice pick

  36. WalkdaPlank Says:

    Isn’t Nick Marshall a QB? ^^^

And a bad one at that.

  37. port richey george Says:

Shawn King has got the Bucs drafting Miami wide receiver Phillip Dorsett with the first overall pick of the third round.

dorsett is a great player…. but the bucs had better address the issues with the o-line since they haven’t done a thing about it in free agency.

  38. tval Says:

You want lovie fired..i get it..:)

  39. tval Says:

Does nike make clipboards? Hello mariota..lol!!

  40. ATrain Says:

Movie will not draft and OLine..

We are Drafting Winston and he is so bad he will block for himself.

Nike has just announced a new running shoe it will take a grandma running a 4.9 40 to a football player who can break 4.7

  41. LargoBuc Says:

Tre Mcbride round 6. He has hands, unlike Herron. Trust me.

  42. Brandon Says:

I’d prefer Tyler Lockett in round 3 if we went WR, or Ty Montgomery or Jamison Crowder in round 5. All excellent return men and slot WR candidates.

  43. BuccaneEric Says:

Does Nike make clipboards?!!!!! Now that’s a good one!!! LOL!!!!

  44. ryan Says:

We all know the Bucs have much more pressing needs but if Dorsett is available in the 3rd then you have to take him. He could be the next TY Hilton and VJax isnt going to be around for much longer.

But with that said, Dorsett being available in the 3rd is a pipe dream.

  45. BucCityBoy Says:

    Please, no.
