Chucky and Jameis Winston exchanged interesting takes
Watching the debut of Jameis Winston on the famous Gruden’s QB Camp on BSPN2 last night was fun stuff for Bucs fans sick of dreadful quarterback play. (Isn’t that everyone?)
Two things of note were Chucky talking about the NFL practice field, and Winston taking what almost felt like a backhanded slap at the Lovie Smith regime.
Those following Winston’s career know the Florida State star is a giant leadership personality and vocal. But Chucky took it a step further — to his former temple. Chucky explained that what Winston brings is critical to the grind of the NFL season.
“We talked about energy and enthusiasm. And this kid had some vibe and some energy. That’s what you need on the practice field from somebody,” Chucky said.
At one point, while watching highlights of various pregame and sideline leadership exploits of Winston, Chucky asked Winston if he brings that kind of juice to practice on a typical Wednesday or Thursday. Winston didn’t hesitate and said he absolutely does.
Joe thinks that practice field take was telling. Offenses do need that personality on the field and, Joe believes, the Bucs don’t have that guy now that Josh McCown has left the building. Joe watches most practices, and offensive practice leadership is lacking. Mike Glennon ain’t that guy.
Chucky went on to say, “I think this kid has great stuff inside of him, rare leadership. He’s got real charisma. You see how the players are drawn to him.”
The show closed with Winston saying, “Being in there with Coach Gruden, it felt like my first pro football meeting. I really enjoyed it.
Whoa! Joe had to rewind that one. At the time of filming, Winston already had met multiple times with the Buccaneers, including at One Buc Palace. And he felt like Chucky was his “first pro meeting?” That was odd. It tells Joe the Bucs might have gone very easy on Winston early in the process.

I didn’t take it the same. Just a kid about to be drafted saying he felt as though he was a pro football player in a meeting. Which he isn’t yet, and hasn’t done yet.

Being loud and boisterous to the point of being obnoxious doesn’t make one a leader. Are you telling me that Aaron Rodgers, Eli Manning, or Russell Wilson are like that? The one that comes to mind who acts like that, is Cam Newton, who hasn’t set the world on fire, and has a tendency to piss off his teammates with his childish antics sometimes. I get the fact you would love to sniff Winston’s jock strap, but to say the only way to be a leader is if you’re vocally obnoxious is BS.

All this Gruden camp sht does is make me wish we never fired him. We have been in the wilderness, consistently sucking assloch and find ourselves with the #1 overall pick thanks to the incompetent but lovable Lovie. All that apparently matters in this community is whether the “Big Dog” likes you, else you get run out of town.
We all know what BD thinks of Winston so expect more misery Bucs fan if we do take him. What a screwed up sports town.

Take away 2003, Gruden had 0 playoff wins in 6 seasons, 2 appearances, and left a totally barren, old roster when he finally got canned. I realize that those are now “the good times”, relatively speaking, but it’s not like we were consistently great under Gruden. Gruden is an ideal coach to take over a team that is close and needs that last push. But he proved he can’t build a roster up with drafting.

Joe, I took Winston’s statement not as a backhanded statement, but rather like it was his first QB meeting on a professional level. Again without knowing the nuances of a team interview, I am assuming there isn’t film study going on , but rather just an interview setting. The Gruden “meeting” (which most likely exceeds) the half hour was more in line with what Winston believes a QB meeting would entail. I think that’s what he was referring to in that statement

Be prepared……you will be constantly defending Winston for his comments….it will take a long time for him to understand that every word he speaks has meaning.

Interesting that there is no mention of the entire segment about his interceptions and staring down Greene. Chucky had a good time with that. Jameis looked pissed but not at Gruden, he was mad at the film. I thought he handled it well but definitely something he has to work on.

I think way too much is being made out of this. For the past month we’ve spent a lot of time making mountains out of molehills and looking over actual serious issues.

Gruden is highly overrated. He brings overwhelming energy to everything he does and I respect that, but ask his former players on the Buccs how theyu feel about him. Clue….his rep aint’ all that good. He apparently talks out of both sides of his mouth.

BTW Do we know if and how much time Fameis got to spend with Koetter because that would be the apples to apples comparison not to Lovie or Licht.
Lovie appears to get the concept of delegation. Let’s see how Fameis gets on with Koetter and Bajakian, those are the relationships that REALLY count.

Winston shows more passion and energy in the tunnel before the game, then Glennon or Mariota does the entire game. He’s the guy that you want to play for out a fear of disappointing him. He buried Mariota in the whiteboard sessions, his football knowledge is far superior. You could tell in the confident way he answered, that he understands it and is not just memorizing it.
And ‘big dog’ has never run anyone out of town that was good. He is an entertainer. Realize that he is no different than any other shock jock that prefers controversy.
As far as Gruden goes I think he got himself fired. You think he was going to just sit by with 40 million under the cap while the glazers saved money? Of course not.
This team needs consistent coaching, time, and Winston. oh yeah and an O-line.

I know we’re going to take him and I’m totally cool with it. BUT…the kid is an idiot. I don’t think he is a bad guy, just an idiot. He never thinks before he speaks which the media is going to LOVE (see JBF), but I seriously doubt he has the intelligence level all of theses talking heads hype about this guy. Great, so he’s no dumb, but he is not smart either. Don’t give me this “but his GPA’, ‘but he got into Stanford’ crap either. Anyone recruited by those schools (me) knows what a farce it is if they want you athletically. Again, I’m excited to take him, but lets be a little more realistic about who he is.

TBBF – i agree with your point. Once we have Winston, there will always be drama about the things he says. That comes with the big personality. You seem to be one of the more rational Mariota supporters, but after watching the two in the media recently, and after seeing Winstons active leadership and influence on his team, its interesting that you still prefer Mariota. To me, he just does not seem to have the horsepower or confidence to come in and make a big difference on a team severly void of leadership and entrenched in loosing. I think with Mariota’s talent and intelligence he will be good eventually but for what the Bucs need right now, he is just simply not as good a fit.

Every players has work to do when they make it to the NFL, that’s not somehow unique to Winston. How many interceptions did Manning throw his rookie year? What about Luck?
Winston is a unique talent, and we’re damn lucky he’s about to be a Buccaneer.

I like the way that Gruden pinned him down on the baseball question. Got Jameis to say that he has played his last baseball game ever.
You could tell how impressed Chucky was with the total pkg that is Jameis Winston. The Bucs are very “lucky” to have the chance to draft this young man. His leadership qualities combined with his very high football IQ and skillset make Winston the best QB prospect to have come into the league in quite some time (Luck aside).
Embrace Fameis Jameis Bucs fans. He will bring QB play to Tampa Bay the likes of which have never been seen in these parts.

Well now that settles the question of which quarterback the Bucs should draft – Marcus Mariota.
If John Gruden endorses a quarterback, run don’t walk in the opposite direction. I mean we had such great quarterbacking in Tampa after Gruden’s arrival. Let’s see, Super Bowl winner Brad Johnson was a Tony Dungy product that was left to Gruden. Under Gruden we saw the likes of: Brian Griese, Chris Simms, Bruce Gradkowski and Jeff Garcia as starters. Now, there’s a group of has beens and never wases for you.
Then there is the “first pro meeting” comment. Given their research and meetings, I’m sure Lovie Smith and Jason Licht know if it was a backhanded slap or just a poorly worded comment by a young man. If it was the former, Jameis Winston should be off the Buccaneer’s draft board by now, never to return. Young man, no matter how good you are, you don’t crap where you eat by criticizing the boss like that, if that’s what you were doing and not just being young and ignorant about politic statements.
Either way, the Gruden endorsement alone is enough for me to go with Mariota. It should be for most Bucs fans as well, or have you forgotten the great quarterbacking we enjoyed from 2002 to 2008 – the Gruden years.

Winston’s own attorney says he is not ready. there are articles posted elsewhere regarding this. also dante fowler from the gators visited the bucs Friday. he Is a good pass rusher.
gruden loved alex smith and hated aaron Rodgers the year they were drafted. alex smith is now a game manager for KC. and aaron Rodgers well… he has Olivia munn as a GF.

Winston has a higher floor, but a lower ceiling. Mariota has a higher ceiling, but will need time to develop. I guess the question is, does Lovies Smith have the time (2-3 years) to develop a guy, or does he feel that his job is in jeopardy and he needs to do something right away. I would watch and see what happens with Glennon. If he stays on the team, it may be a sign that the Bucs are thinking long term and MG8 will (at least) open the season at QB. If Glennon gets shipped out, I would think that points to Winston in the Draft. We will know in less than 3 weeks!

I totally support either QB. I do think Winston has more of the vocal leadership and football IQ than Mariota. Calling Winston an idiot is funny because in my experience in life, everyone is an idiot to some degree including myself. Not one draft prospect is prepared for the NFL life because it is very foreign from college life. Even Mariota is not ready since being the starting QB typically involves having a radio show, weekly press conferences and interviews. Mariota is not charismatic and seems uncomfortable in front of the camera. Winston blows him away in that category. Again, I am not putting Mariota down, I really like him and think he will also eventually become a good QB in the right system. My best advice is to quit lobbying so passionately for one guy over the other through bashing comments and just enjoy having the 1st pick. Be happy if we come away with a franchise QB prospect. I understand that it is fun to keep the debate going to fill the time during the long, dreadful and daunting off season. Some people on this site are going to be really happy after we select our picks, some are going to be pissed, some are going to be confused by some surprise picks like Simms in the 3rd round last year (who saw that coming)? I will be one of the few along with TBBF who will be satisfied as long as we take one of the top QB prospects. That approach is very calming. Some of the extremes I read on here, although entertaining, make me shake my head at the intellectual state of some individuals. And then there is TheKevin who gets his own category since to my knowledge he is the only one who wants us all dead.

I think the Bucs will keep Glennon as a safety valve if Winston trips up somewhere down the line. Winston’s talent and motivation coupled with Glennon’s character would have made the ideal QB. Also I think Koetter may want a crack at working with Glennon as well..who knows working with both may prove to be beneficial for the Bucs. Lovie loves to keep rookies on the bench for a little while….believes even the best need to learn and pay their dues. If Glennon stays… He may very well start till the bye…..unless he really stinks up the joint or gets injured.

Just Gruden being Gruden. Gruden falls in love with every QB he sees himself in. Have we all forgotten how many QBs he wanted and then cast aside only to win a Super Bowl with the QB he didn’t want against the previous QB he didn’t want. L&L have shown mixed success with the draft and free agency so far. They need to do way better if they want to be here to negotiate the long term contract for this year’s #1 – whoever it is.

I used to be a pretty badass QB in my day before I stopped playing football to concentrate on baseball, and I honestly couldn’t play for a coach like Lovie (or Dungy)…. I was always yelling & screaming profanities just bcuz of how fired up I would get. I can’t imagine that Winston is actually looking forward to all the censorship that he’ll be dealing with here. I don’t understand why we would pick a guy for being a fiery leader and then try to dumb his personality down and force him to be someone he’s not…. It’s a square peg round hole thing… Mariota would fit into the culture more naturally.

Beyond that, you are overthinking it. If OBP thinks one of the two QBs fits their offense, that’s the one they will choose.
Have you heard of Occam’s Razor? Read up. You continue come up with the least likely of scenarios. It’s not that elaborate. It’s not about personalities. There’s no scheme to trick people to think they like one guy while secretly wanting the other. It’s far more simple than that.
They will pick the guy that they think is the better QB and will win more games. Nothing more.

So last night I watched the Gruden camp of both Winston and Mariota, but I watched it with my father in law. He, like everyone I know in Hawaii, is a huge Mariota guy. He is constantly telling me Winston is going to eat himself out of the league. After watching both, even he said Winston is much more charismatic. Mariota almost put him to sleep. One word answers, and definitely not as comfortable on the field. Now he will never say we should draft Winston, but that’s about as close as you can get. It’s about the same as a Democrat endorsing a Republican, not gonna happen.

I don’t under stand the trade down crowd. They say lets trade down and build the team and go for a QB next year. What QB is better than JW or MM in college? NONE that’s who. This team has an opportunity to finally get a QB! That trade down crap kills me, just like the MGM folks!

Hawaiian Buc you’re joking right? Of course Winston is more charismatic. Nothing new there. I don’t see that as an endorsement because I still want Mariota. After watching both during the one hour episode they are both great at what they do. I don’t think Mariota is going to have to sit a season. Bubble Y Over is an NFL play. He runs other plays that were NFL as well.

Trading down makes sense because there is no way Shameis will be successful with that horrible monstrosity of an offensive line. In regarding your comment that there won’t be a better QB than Marcus Mariota and J. Winston next year is a bunch of BS. Dak Prescott will be a great QB. My prediction is that if the Bucs draft Shameis with the first pick that he will get hurt in week 3 because his Oline will make him run for his life and he won’t be able to take the beating. Also, although the drafting of him will help sell more tickets to FSU-Bucs fans that live in Tampa. It will alienate many UF-Bucs fans. Also it will bring plenty of negative press by Winston’s accuser who lives in the Tampa Bay Metro Area. So, I say if the Bucs want a media circus, draft Shameis!

It was a great episode — Gruden knows how to get in your craw, that’s for sure. Jameis is the answer and if we take anyone but him, we’ll be kicking ourselves for the next decade.
If we can get Rashad Greene at the beginning of the third, I say do that too.
