Jameis Is Not Like Other Jimbo QBs

April 8th, 2015

jameis 0213

In his years as an offensive coordinator and head coach in college football, both at LSU and Florida State, Jimbo Fisher has pumped out quarterbacks who were high NFL draft picks.

First, it was JaMarcus Russell, then Christian Ponder and E.J. Manuel. Barring something terribly unforeseen, Jameis Winston will match Russell for being a No. 1 overall pick.

Because of this, many Winston critics and haters say he will bust just as badly as the previous Fisher pupils.

The creator, curator and overall guru of ProFootballTalk.com, the great Mike Florio, joined former NFLers Ross Tucker and Jason Taylor in discussing this subject.

In particular, Tucker believes this is nonsense. No fan of Winston’s, Tucker suggested that because Winston in his first year starting was light years better than the other three Fisher products, this is a ridiculous comparison. Watch more in the NBC Sports video below.

He’s also no longer Mayocks number one QB

  2. Keepitreal Says:

Mayock has never liked him personally. No surprise hear

  3. Celly Says:

    @Flmike…

I just read that too, and the first thing i thought was, “i wonder how many people on JBF will now that what Mayock said as gospel.”

  4. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

Mariota will win out in the end and be our #1 draft pick.

  5. rayjay1122 Says:

Mayock has an agenda. Mayock is also not the ultimate authority on all things football.

  6. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

If the Bucs ran the exact same process between MM & JW asked the same questions…filmed the same plays in the same order from behind……Mariota is without question the better of the two QB’s….end of story

  7. Mariota Joe Says:

And Florio was also practically masturbating over JaMarcus Russell when he was about to be the number one pick.

  8. BFFL Says:

It is ridiculous. Just like it’s ridiculous to compare Mariota to RG3, Kaepernick and Vick just because he can run real fast.

  9. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

    HAHAHAHAHAHAA!

  10. JBuc Says:

Normally I respect Mayock and I am fine with him preferring Mariota for whatever reason. However, what has happened during the offseason that would cause him to change his ranking. Has he provided an explanation? Seems kind of silly on the surface.

  11. Jeff Says:

Joejoe’s, I’d like to know what plays your basing that statement off of? I am not going to say which one will excel at the next level better than the other but they both have different games. One is a, stand tall in the pocket and go through the progressions. While the other gets his plays called presnap, although does make changes when needed, and make his first read or runs. To say MM is the obvious choice is a little silly as they aren’t comparable apples to apples.

  12. BB Christina Says:

We are the doormat of the NFL! They must hate the thought of us drafting a potential star in Winston and would love us to pass him up for the undeserving but always praised Jets. I’m not surprised Mayock would do this, but to me his agenda is obvious he’s hated on JW from the jump.

  13. WS99 Says:

Call me stupid but I’d rather the opinion of NFL players, vets and HOF’rs. To my knowledge not one person who has laced up the cleats and played significant ball (playoffs/SB) prefers MM with the exception of mr dungy of course. But again I think thats more personal than business.

Mayock is great for tv and articles and such but I’m more comfortable with the opinion of players who have won on the biggest stage in sports. Again, call me stupid.

  14. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Jiff…it is a little silly saying Mariota can’t call plays in a huddle and only can play QB if he gets his plays from the sideline …the Bucs saw both guys in consecutive days…if both guy went thru the same on field and chauk talk….filming the whole process it would make things very interesting.
Mariota can do EVERYTHING Jameis can do…..and more with his feet

  15. Bucfan4life Says:

Mayock will get more publicity by making this pick. Most mocks have Mariota going no better than 6th and many now have him out of the top 10. Mayock is truly being original by having a QB with so many unknowns going number one overall. If Winston wasn’t available I think many would have the Bucs taking an edge rusher at this point.

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

I wonder the same thing JBuc. Nothing has changed. I think they’re just trying to shake things up since Winston has been the lock for awhile.

Maybe Mayock is embarresed for rating Manziel as his top QB last year and wants to make up for it by emphasizing “character” WAY more than normal

  17. jfat Says:

I’m interested to see how many mocks change in the next week or so because of the Mayock change. I’ve often thought a lot of the mocks out there are a bit lazy and just go with the popular opinion rather than putting in a lot of work actually studying the players.

Not saying this is the only reason Winston is dominating mock drafts, but it wouldn’t surprise me a bit if suddenly Mariota winds up getting more backers.

  18. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

Look all I got people in the Chi & in AZ who want to get Winston jersey’s and not bootlegs that have Buc color’s and have #5 on both sides. By the way the away jersey’s are tight especially at night I could sport those with the hat.

  19. WS99 Says:

    Fungi nails

Will the team be able to hear him in the huddle though? The team may have to learn sign language.

  20. Bucfan4life Says:

The four mock drafts on NFL.com have Mariota going 10th, 12th, 17th, and 20th.

  21. Idontwannahearitanymore Says:

NFL.com – five writers, five mocks, and Mariotta in ranked from #6 (only top 10) to #20. If it weren’t for Mayock, Mariotta might not have any support.

  22. INDYbucsfan Says:

Mayock has been slipping the last few years with his judgement. I’m curious as to why MM is now 1

  23. Bucfan4life Says:

Well jfat Mariota has been free falling lately. I don’t think on outlier is going to swing it back on MMs direction.

  24. LargoBuc Says:

You know I hope we do pick Winston and I hope it works out we become relevant by being consistent playoff contenders and eventually another super bowl.
But I also hope that Mariota goes to Tennessee or the Jets and does the same for them. I hope Winston versus Mariota becomes the next Manning vs Brady type thing and Mariota becomes great at running a pro offense.

  25. c-spann Says:

    @LargoBuc

    I concur.

Mayock is truly being original by having a QB with so many unknowns going number one overall. If Winston wasn’t available I think many would have the Bucs taking an edge rusher at this point.

And technically, he doesn’t have him going #1. He just has him ranked #1. Who’s to say that in his mock draft, he doensn’t mock JW to the Bucs…

  29. Celly Says:

    @Pat..

That is a daily mock draft that looks like its done by the “community” (read: fans).

Not sure i would consider that to be credible.

  30. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Celly..of course I’ll support JW…..
It is just that I have question marks with JW both on and off field…

  31. Pat Says:

Picture is worth a 1000 + words. Awesome!

  32. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

I heard the Bucs had Jameson running on the treadmill for a couple hours today. In hope of helping him get rid of that gut!

Report: #Bucs have concerns about Jameis Winston, could draft Marcus Mariota. THANK YOU SWEET JESUS!! https://twitter.com/sportsfeedia/status/585913198135681024

  35. Bucfan4life Says:

Yep that’s it Sam. Sportsfeedia (whatever that is) tweeted it out and surely they have the inside scoop!

  36. SuperSam Says:

Jason Cole actually. Thank you Lovie and Licht!! Best news ive heard all day!

  37. MM-ARMY Says:

Jimbo also said Ponder would be a great NFL QB….how did that work out?? What Jimbo says is not gospel either. If it was Kiper…..I would be like pfft….but Mayock does have a good rep for being right or closer on true NFL talent evaluation.

If we do draft MM…I think Glennon is traded same day for picks.

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Per: BSPN

    QBR decline

Winston’s Total QBR in 2014 (74.5) was nearly 15 points worse than it was in 2013 (89.4), when he led FBS quarterbacks in that metric.

As the projected No. 1 pick, Winston will be the seventh quarterback since 2008 to be drafted in the first three rounds whose college QBR regressed from his first season as a starter to his last. The other six quarterbacks have not have success in the NFL, to put it lightly.

Nine quarterbacks drafted in the first three rounds since 2008 improved in QBR while logging at least one elite season (defined as having a QBR of 80 or more). They have a .543 career winning percentage in the NFL and a combined 25 playoff starts. Those nine quarterbacks include Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson and Colin Kaepernick.

  39. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

Hey Barry, I dont like Jameis with the best of them. But youre a tool.

  40. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Father Dungy….needs to be factored in…he is the sage voice that is not beholding to the Glazers in any way…..

  41. MM-ARMY Says:

    WS99

When you go on the road in the NFL…it is mostly hand signals that are used by the QB so I am not sure your argument holds any water. In addition if he was such a bad play caller like you inferred because he is quiet, it would have shown up weekly at Oregon with false starts and other issues. I think this MM play calling issue is media driven and not based on reality.

  42. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

Mariota has always been the #1 QB for me. Give me the guy who can make all the throws, has great poise and decision-making, has elite speed, and is a saint off-the-field. The NFL has never experienced a QB exactly like Mariota. I think he’s going to set the league on fire and destroy any of the stupid preconceived notions. But what do I know? I’m only football fanatic with a genius IQ. Mariota haters should seriously STFU. #Mariotaistooelitetopassup

  43. Waterboy Says:

    3. Derek Carr, Fresno State
    4. Jimmy Garoppolo, Eastern Illinois
    T-5. Zach Mettenberger, LSU
    T-5. Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville

  44. port richey george Says:

the reason jameis threw so many interceptions while QB at FSU was because of his leftwich throwing arm motion. when you throw like leftwich it gives the safeties and the cornerbacks more time to get to the ball. you cannot pump fake. the dbacks wait until you do your long wind up. it will be worse for jamies in the nfl. these guys are making big $$$ to intercept him. if they intercepted him a lot in college it will be 10 times worse in the nfl.

  45. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

    LUVMYBUCS,

    Brilliant post.

  46. cmurda Says:

I read that a second accuser is expected to either testify at the Civil case against FSU and Winston or bring up her own civil suit. This is not good and the timing is certainly suspect. As much as I want to believe there is no truth to it, there is certain concern here. The good news is the Bucs have nearly a month to decide on Jameis. We know what assumptions cause and I simply won’t do that. I expect many more facts to emerge; hopefully enough to put this to bed. No pun intended.

  47. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Jameis would have benefited greatly ,developing as a QB, with another year at FSU……too bad FSU gave him the bums rush…they could not risk anymore scandal and embarrasment

  48. Lord Cornelius Says:

It is odd that Mayock dropped Cam Newton in favor of Gabbert; and then dropped Bridgewater hardcore in favor of Manziel & company; and is now dropping Winston for Mariota.

He reads WAY too much into the Non-Film part of it from what I can tell. Teddy’s film was great and that’s why I never wavered from wanting us to take him. Pro day didn’t mean sh*t.

Also – supersam or whatever – Jason Cole is also the same guy who was reporting about a 2nd accuusor when there was literally no new news to give anyone that idea. He litereally created a random hypothetical and sold it as if it was a prediction rooted in some sort of fact. Forgive me for not really reading anything into what that guy says at this point; and relying on the countless other reports that contradict him.

  49. Dave Pear Says:

I cannot wait until draft day. We will pick Jameis Winston #1 and then the trolls will finally go away.

He is weak, scared to make the difficult throws and in general will be a huge missed opportunity for OUR franchise. I hope I am wrong but this kid is not NFL material unless you cater to his skills which are not center around being a great passer rather it is centered around being a great athlete. Please tell me the last time that had worked in the NFL. I will wait.

I have to say, this is pretty cute that the anti-Winston guys have some new found hope. We’ve got guys quoting random twitter feeds, and others believing that because Mariota can call plays and go under center with no defense, he can automatically do it in a real game. At least this makes it interesting, because I was scared that some of the anti-Winston guys were going to disappear. The best part is, I can say with 100% certainty that most of you clowns have probably never seen Mariota play one full game. Thank goodness for those youtube highlights!!! Saves so much time. I’m legitimately happy for you guys though. Keep hope alive!!!!!!

I’m not sure what makes you think Mariota is weak or scared, I think you’re reaching. Show me a play where he looks scared or weak, I’ll wait.

  67. Howard Cosell Says:

    That picture is badass.
In 5 years MM will be muscled-up Brett Farve of a QB in the NFL.

I won’t take gratuitous stabs at Winston, but lets
just say he has a high risk factor. He could easily end up fat….or worse.

As long as we take one of the two Joe will be able to sleep at night.

Im going to throw out a hypothetical.

The Chargers are “rumored” to be willing to trade Phillip Rivers in order to move up for Mariota. Lets say they offer Rivers and their #17 pick this year and a 2nd or 3rd or 4th next year (assuming Rivers is probably worth at the very least a 1st and 2nd rounder).

    Would anybody consider this?

  75. tval Says:

Lmao @ the delusion. I’ll take your word for it :). lovie need only ask this question of himself, do I think I would have beaten Peyton Manning in the Super Bowl with Jameis instead of Rex? And, no, you mariota mongrels cant use that one..:)

    Rivers? Nah.

    @ gotbucs
I am a founding member of the Trade Down Crowd. I have since come to accept that we are taking a QB at No. . I am OK with that. I get paid to build stuff and the Front Offices of Football teams get paid to pick QBs. I don’t want someone’s re-tread that could hardly win a playoff game if it was handed to him. No sir. If SD wants Mariota then they are over Rivers. I have been over him for years. The only time I want to hear the words ‘Rivers’ and ‘Elite’ are if you are talking about the rivers here in Montana

  78. Erik the WiseMMan Says:

Nope, and i like philip..jameis is another level..now you wanna talk awkward motion working, lets talk p rivers :)..philip and luck telegraph more than jameis, thats a fact. 80. tval Says:

Lol @ the elite rivers in montana..good stuff!

  81. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I don’t know if many of you are just desperate, or if this really is your first draft. Maybe both? You do realize that the media wants to create some buzz with the first pick right? And guess what – a lot of you suckers but into it. That’s fine, but doesn’t it make you feel like you’ve been duped, because that’s exactly what’s happening. Now I don’t know who we are going to draft, but you are a complete sucker if you are buying into this sudden swap from Mayock. Did I miss a game since the last time these 2 QB’s played? Why exactly would Mayock swap if there hasn’t even been a game played? Has he been present in these meetings? Has he personally worked out either QB? Think about it people!

  82. I'm a great person Says:

Another thing, when was the last time there was a real surprise with the #1 pick? The last one I can think of was 2006, but even that wasn’t that big of a surprise because they signed Mario Williams before the draft. Overall, the experts usually get it right. This one is as big of a slam dunk as there’s probably ever been. I have yet to see one mock draft with anyone but Jameis. The only reason I won’t say with certainty that we are taking Winston is because we are the Bucs, and history suggests we like to be cute sometimes. Again, it’s really cute that some of you are buying this, but be prepared to be crying yourself to sleep on April 30.

It’s gonna be wildfire in the upcoming days and you and 87 will just keep swinging on his junk like it’s meaningless. Meaningless to you, meaningful to every NFL team and that’s what counts!

  89. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @I’m a great person,

Let me let you in on something: if there were any truth to this story, it would be all over the news. They would interrupt the Masters to talk about this. It would be all over NFL Network. It would be everywhere. If that happens, I would be very worried. However, I’m not going to get worried when a bunch of haters start grasping for straws and citing random crap than has zero credibility.

And for the record (once again), I wish Mariota were the better QB. It would be awesome for me to have a guy from Hawaii leading my favorite team. I’ve watched damn near every game he’s played in throughout his college career. Unfortunately, i don’t believe he’s going to be the better QB in the NFL. It’s my opinion. I’m as far from a Mariota hater as humanly possible. But in watching both, I see a much better QB in Winston, and it’s not even that close. It’s my opinion, but it’s also the opinion of most people, which is why no one is mocking Mariota at #1. That doesn’t mean its a lock that Winson will be better, because there are no locks. But I really can’t stand this constant crap of believing every single report you read that gives you something that supports your agenda. Hell, you should just tweet out a report, and I’m sure some of these boneheads would have an orgasm reading it.

That’s an old story that was reported by the NY Times back when they were accusing the Tallahassee of shabby police work during the investigation.

Bucs Nation dug that back up last week and if you read that article closely they worded it in a way that sounds like it’s about to happen but it’s more of a hypothetical situation they’re throwing out there.

  92. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @I’m a great person,

Do you still want to argue now? Check your sources, and learn to read without a bias. You’re an idiot, and I’m enjoying every second of it.

  93. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Ha ha ha ha!!!! That article was written back in November first of all. Second, Fox Sports didn’t report it happened, they said a gambling website reported it. Oh my, you are stupid.

  94. Yungry Says:

NFL Network: “Who’s the best NFL future Quarterback? Mariota=60% and Winston=40%…Mayock is switching his stance too. Chargers will host Mariotta next week. Licht said, “Marcus’ workout was outstanding.” UHhhhhhhh OHHHHHH

    ——-

Nothing more telling than fan polls and a GM calling a player outstanding. Normally, GM’s say the player looked like crap, so this is clearly an indication that Mariota is our guy. Judging by the fact that both the fans and Mayock prefer Mariota, he is destined for the Hall of Fame. It looks like a done deal.

  96. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I just ordered my Mariota jersey on the Bucs website. It’s already there guys! Hurry up and get it before they are all gone.

  97. Buc1987 Says:

Hawaiian Buc…keep up the great work. My mind can’t simple handle such idiocy any longer. The story this moron is citing is about 4 months old, along with the this “2nd accuser” this is all old news, but to these fools it’s fresh off the presses. It must mean trouble for Winston. It looks like I took a good time to take a break after 3 months of this BS. I still read the comments and Joe’s articles all day long, but I just shake my head in amazement at the stupidity of some of these fans. What they fail to realize is that everything “red flag” they keep coming up with has ALREADY been investigated, by the Bucs and I’m sure the NFL.

This is right up your alley though. Maybe I should just take the next 3 weeks off and let you finish them off. You LOVE this kind of stuff, believe I know.

I especially got a kick out of the guy that cited a Vikings fan mock draft that said Mariota is going to the Bucs. That was precious. The longer it takes for it to sink in, the dumber they look.

This post was just for you my man. I’m on a break until next Tuesday, but I was just admiring your points and couldn’t resist letting you know. Keep up the great work stomping these morons into the ground.

    Peace.

It’s been ONE DAY 87!! Lmao, ONE!

  99. Buc1987 Says:

Walk…yes but look at all the comments I had to sit through and endure. I was not caught up in the middle of all this BS like usual. That was just for Hawaiin anyways, not the rest of you. lol

I will make myself scarce I can tell you that….because it’s getting crazy round this site right now. I’ve said everything I needed to say for the last 3 months.

    Nothing more to add.

    Peace X2.

  100. Bucfan4life Says:

Interesting quote from JD tonight on NFL network. Since Chip Kelly took over at Oregon no QB there has thrown double digit ints. “That’s just the way the system works.”

  101. Bucfan4life Says:

But the Mariota gang and Duemig declare that MM is not a product of the system. You have fooled yourself if you are a Mriota supporter and are confidant that he can succeed in a pro style offense. There is no way to know that based on his tape.

  102. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @1987,

ha ha, thanks. I go in spurts. Sometimes I just read the comments and laugh at the stupidity. Other times I like to set people straight. I have no problem with anyone wanting us to draft Mariota. I understand people being uneasy about Winston. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have some concerns myself. However, I can’t stand the stupid points people make. Make a good point and I’m fine. But making stuff up is a different story.

  103. cmurda Says:

I’m supposed to be working now but Hawaiian putting people in check here is pure gold. Don’t stop. I can vouch for you. You really wanted to be able to ride the Mariota bandwagon. Who could blame you? He’s from Hawaii, he has been hyped for 2 years now, and he’s the “safer” choice regarding off-field behavior. but, with all that said, you looked at the bodies of work and made an informed judgment call. I respect that. I was in the Mariota camp initially but this past college season convinced me to go all in with Winston. My mind instantly gravitates to his ability to close games. You simply can’t teach that. Winston just has it. Sure, he threw too many picks but when the game was on the line and his team needed him, Winston pulled through….again and again. Imagine if we had a closer last year when a good number of our losses were decided in the waning minutes of games. I mean, seriously, what other team in the NFL could have an opposing coach throw a challenge flag when they are out of timeouts and then have the refs actually review the play and call a 12 men on the field penalty. Effectively ending the game instead of a spike and Game Winning Fg for the Bucs. We grasp defeat out of the jaws of victory on a perrenial basis and I truly feel Winston is a game-changer for us He can instantly transform the mentality in that locker room. Sure, he could play 3 average quarters of football and throw 2 picks but when it’s on the line, the guy goes beast mode. This is why I’m all in on Winston. The pick is Winston. It’s April smokescreen month in the NFL.

  104. Buxfan Says:

Remember this nugget from draft guru Mike Mayock.

Mike Mayock on Mark Barron pre-draft: “His ceiling is a Pro Bowl safety; his floor is a Pro Bowl safety.

    We do it big

  106. White Tiger Says:

Well in point of fact…even if he’s light years ahead of the other 3…that makes him average.

I’m not saying he’s average, but Jimbo has no track record, and there are problems enough with Winston’s game…that in a strong draft, he would be average. He’s not Montana, Brady, either Manning, and not Rodgers. He won’t sit long enough to soak up any experience, and he won’t have an offensive line.

ipso, he’s dead even with Mariota.

  107. Andrew 1 Says:

Still can’t believe there are people that think we are drafting Mariota. If you have been watching football long enough AND been paying attention, then its easy to see who the better QB is, and it’s Winston. I can say that without hesitation or bias. Wake up people and accept it. I wish Mariota was the better QB because he is a better person, but he is not the better QB, Winston is, and so because of that his off the field issues don’t mean sh!t to the bucs. Its always been talent over morality when it comes to the draft, always has always will be. So learn to deal with having Winston as our QB because you’re going to need to, or move on.

  108. Andrew 1 Says:

And please stop trying to convince yourselves that Mariota is the better QB just because you cant stand Winston the person. That’s what I think is really going on around here with these guys clamoring for Mariota, because there is NO WAY you can look at the film and come to that conclusion if you are a knowledgeable football fan.

  109. Sim Says:

Everybody is missing the larger point on the Fisher QB bust comparisons. The bottom line is that all of Jimbo’s QBs have all been very loose with the football, whether it is in the form of ill advised throws or not protecting the ball from pass rushers. Winston fits squarely in this mold and while he is certainly a better pure passer than Russell, Ponder or Manuel, he gives the ball away too much for any reasonable observer to think that trend is not going to continue and increase in the NFL. If Jameis is the #1 pick and starts game 1 behind the Bucs Oline the over/under on turnovers from the QB spot will be 25-30. If he comes anywhere near that number his first year then there is little chance that he will be anything but a bust.

  110. Caleb Says:

    @Waterboy

I see you’re criticizing Mayock for the way he graded QBS coming out of the draft, but let’s be real here bro. His ratings were the same as everyone else who is considered an expert in this.

I hate to break it to you all but the so called “franchise QB” only comes around once in a great while. The reason for these experts making such a big emphasis on there QB ratings is because that’s what the fans want, not necessarily what’s the best decision for the team. Hint- the reason guys like Manziel and Quinn weren’t draft number 1 overall. QB will always demand the most attention during the draft and every year the have a few guys at the QB position that they think can be the next franchise QB.

Final word- guys, we need to wake up. What QBS do in college doesn’t translate that same ability in the NFL. I don’t care if they ran the spread or a so called pro style offense in college. I will say this, I don’t know wether MM or JW will be the better QBS in the NFL, but I can for sure answer this. Neither do any of you or any of the experts. My reasoning is simple, none of us has seen these guys play at the NFL level yet. So until we do there’s no reason to argue who is better.

Personally, I don’t think either one of these guys are ready for the NFL, not saying that they don’t have the ability, but without a good supporting cast a rookie QB will stuggle every time. The NFL is a whole different game from college. In the NFL everyone was the best player at there position at some point before they got there. In college there’s only a handful of these guys at most on every team. The comparison is not realistic.

I know whoever we draft (which I think it will be JW) MM or JW they will stuggle without improvements to the O-line.
