McCown New Face Of NFL QBs?

Joe is as stunned as the next guy that turnover-prone quarterback Josh McCown found yet another team to stick-up hand over $5 million a year for his non-services.
Someone other than an opposing team must consider interceptions a “service.”
Add BSPN’s Pat McManamon to the mix. In what has to be a tongue-in-cheek offering, McManamon tries to find the logic in how any sober NFL executive can fork over so much money to the former Bucs quarterback.
McCown is basically a guy who has extended his career and earned a lot of money with five good games in Chicago in 2013. When Jay Cutler was injured, McCown (with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery at receiver and Matt Forte at running back) completed 66.5 percent with 13 TDs and one interception, and won three-of-five starts.
Tampa Bay rewarded him with $4.75 million in guaranteed money in 2014. After he went 1-10, the Browns rewarded him with $6.25 million in guaranteed money.
Presumably, if McCown goes winless this season he will earn more than $10 million for another team next season. This clearly is a career and economic path that most would wish to follow. This is the Browns’ new starting quarterback.
If the Browns are looking to win the Chase for Christian this coming season, then they cannot find a better caretaker than McCown. However, the way Hackenberg regressed under Penn State coach James Franklin (who is a spread guy and Hackenberg is not), Joe is not convinced the Browns need the first pick overall in next spring’s draft to land Hackenberg.
Provided the Bucs and/or Jameis Winston don’t screw up in the next three weeks, McCown will go down in history as leading the Bucs to victory in the Chase for Jameis.

Just goes to show the lack of respect the rest of the NFL has for Tampa Bay. The Browns most likely believe McCown’s failures last year were the direct result of the Bucs miserable coaches and team.

Josh McCowan, the QB with 5 decent games as a Chicago Bear, is able to parlay this into 10 Million Dollars+, the NFL sure is in need of quality quarterbacks.

Lovie has favorites! It was never let the best man win… It was McCown is our starter and end of story… Who would want to have a coach like that? Players want a coach that treats everyone fair and has an OPEN competition.

The Browns staff must be quite full of themselves to think they win with Mccown. The guy did his best, which is respectful, but he’s not good enough to start. Especially going up against Flacco, Dalton and Roethlisberger.

No OC, no pass protection, no run support. Yes – certainly all the Bucs problems are directly attributable to McCown’s lack of skill.

Yes McCown was bad, but I believe he would have played better (at least average) if he had a better offensive line. But now that experience is over, and we can get a QB that has potential to be not just average or good but great. At the same time though, I would like to see us start the process of fixing the o line because that will only help things. Draft a tackle in the second and make it a priority from here on out until its fixed.

The line was extremely bad, but that doesn’t make up for the STUPID plays McCown would make. Remember when he fumbled , picked it up and tried to re throw it on a wr screen and it got intercepted?! Haha that my friends was a stupid play. Even if he was trying to throw it out of bounds like he said. Take the sack.

I would bet they made a play for Glennon too and the Bucs said no! They looked at the entire years worth of games and they knew where the real problems were. And it was not that the Bucs were tanking for Winston.

Personally, I’m not upset with McCown at all. IF we had started Glennon, we would have more wins and be stuck with him. Right now we have a chance to get a real QB so no harm no foul. He’s happy with a new contract and I’m happy to have a new QB…everybody’s happy (except Mariota fanboys)

The players who stirs the Brown’s drink, Joe Thomas both threw Johnny Football under the bus and then backed it up to give him a chance.
Thomas said Johnny Football lost the team last year when he started. They disliked his lack of commitment. But Thomas added that if Johnny Football came in this year and showed a dedication to being a starting QB the team would support him. Thomas added that he thought Johnny Football had the talent if he could get his attitude and head straightened out.
If Johnny Football can’t beat out the choke artist Josh McCown he should be out of the league.

If that’s true Luther why didn’t Glennon look better than McCown? Yes both looked bad with the circumstance they were put into but to say one would have done better than the other is not based on anything but your opinion. My opinion is that Glennon wouldn’t have survived the season healthy enough to play 16 games. I like what you write on here most of the time but the McCown bashing is in poor taste. The guy almost got killed behind that horrible line and with no OC and that is on the Bucs not him.

If you’re feeling pressured, you invent ways to mess up lol. I know thats been true in my life, and thats what I think about with that fumble/interception play. The pressure started to get to McCown so much that he started inventing ways to mess up. And even though our next soon to be QB handles pressure a lot better, lets fix the o line before that happens to him.

@Stanglassman I don’t mean to bash McCown at all. I really like the guy and think that he’s passionate and knowledgeable.
I do think that Glennon was the better QB last year and the stats (whatever that’s worth) back that up. I am thankful for the opportunity to draft a franchise QB. Staying in the middle of the crowd for the number of years that we have does nothing for your franchise. I believe that having a top 5 pick is not bad enough if you don’t have a QB and there are only a couple available like this year.
Look at Detroit, they sucked enough that they got premium players even if they were not able to keep Suh, losing as bad as they did, really made a difference.

I love the fact people just gloss over the whole not having an OC last year like that wasn’t the main reason we were terrible. Granted that wasn’t the reason for McCowns fumble 360 interception. Sure as hell didn’t help.

You know WS99, I rarely agree with you about anything, but your remark about the least competent and qualified people getting raises and promotions certainly resonated with me and I agree wholeheartedly
It was one thing for the Bucs to count on McClown due to his previous year, but for the Browns to do the same thing after what he put on film last season is pure insanity.
Of course the Browns probably knew and took into account that he had an idiot for an OC so maybe that is why they pulled the trigger on him.
Still, you got to feel sympathy for Brown fan. Some of the most loyal fans in the league who make a lot of our so called “fans” like Robert 9, Dallas Bucs and the rest of the cabal of hate look like a pack of Benedict Arnold’s.

I also am surprised McCown was signed by Cleveland, the Browns must like his experience. My favorite AFC teams are Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Baltimore, the three existing teams who left to join the AFC when it was created.

Glennon seemed to get the ball out quicker / make quicker decisions which may have led to less hits. Who knows at this point. Glennon did have a chance but he came out in his last 2 games and basically didn’t hit any open receivers and gave the job back. All that being said they were at a disadvantage with the line and OC but in the NFL you either do your job or you don’t, there is no such thing as excuses.

Who is to blame for bad decisions or inaccurate throws? Only them. Do some guys get it easier with better lines and better plays? Sure. But you miss the receiver 10 yards over his head or do a jump 360 spin shotput to a linebacker thats all you.

I am still hoping the Bucs draft Hackenberg next year (if Glennon falters), hence I hold out hope for trading down this year. Hindenburg for Hackenberg!
