Spreadsheeter Souring On Mariota
April 7th, 2015To hear some, Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota is easily a No. 1 overall pick and is fighting with Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston to be selected by the Bucs later this month.
But as the offseason rolls on, more and more claim Winston is headed to the Bucs and that Mariota was slipping. Joe has read projectins that Mariota could fall to the Jets (No. 6) and, perhaps, even to the Eagles (No. 20).
This, of course, rankles the Mariota Band.
One guy losing his attraction for Mariota is Steve Palazzolo of Pro Football Focus. He is starting to believe Mariota needs a specific coach for him to succeed on the NFL level.
The more I watch Mariota, the more I think he needs Chip Kelly much more than Chip Kelly needs him.
— Steve Palazzolo (@PFF_Steve) April 5, 2015
Joe wouldn’t go that far. Mariota very well could be a stud quarterback. But like the vast majority of spread quarterbacks, learning an NFL system is going to be a hurdle. If he can figure that out (big “if”), who knows how far he could go?
That’s a big question mark, though.

HAHAHA,,,,
JOE sell that Winston pick… The Bucs better pay you well…
Joe is changing the name of this page to : “JOE KNOWS WINSTON ”
Let me know when you get back to reporting all the news on the Bucs FAN page…News for ALL FANS…
By the way if this QB fails you will look very bad…

Here comes the dumb people….
April 7th, 2015 at 10:17 am
You too 87… You have such love of this player you are not a BUCS fan you are a FSU FAN following your PLAYER>..
Better hope he is the GREATEST EVER
Oh wait he is …
Your an idiot.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:17 am
God this is just like sitting in a room with a FSU and UF crowd during their rivalry game… Obnoxious on both ends.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:18 am
I thought the Buccaneers were flying out to Oregon to work out Mariota today, but I’m having trouble finding the article on JBF.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:19 am
Sometimes I wish those who understand that the Bucs are picking Winston ignore this idiots. Who do you think Bucs may pick in the second round?
April 7th, 2015 at 10:20 am
Think about this. Bucs fans went back and forth on McCown vs Glennon. The only reason Glennon survived is he wasn’t put to the test on the field. So, what can he accomplish? Who knows.
Right now its Winston over Mariotta. But if Winston fizzles, thousands will say I told you so.
To me, the exciting thing is the Bucs are willing to take a chance on a future franchise QB. No more lame duck castoffs, wanna be’s or could have beens.
We could have the savior or he could be an imposter. No one knows for sure!
But at least take a chance. GO FOR IT!!!
April 7th, 2015 at 10:23 am
@charactermatters
Buccaneers are trying to create some feeling that Mariota may be the pick. Keep them guessing…for a possible ridiculous trade offer. Not a wasted trip though, Bucs looking at Jake Fisher (OL) as well for their possible 2nd pick.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:26 am
PFF thinks Teddy Bridgewater was the 2nd best QB in the second half of the year last year. So yeah, PFF sucks big time. Horrible site.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:27 am
Left tackle with the second round pick.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:29 am
OH MAN did the BUCS really just do an article on their official site with the QB stats of the QB’s on this draft…
Talk about facts… Mariota wins in all of the categories excepted Interceptions..
Winston fans put your FSU hands back in your ears and stick out your tongue and say BUT THE BUCS WILL PICK WINSTON..
HAHA awesome article…
by the way Joe that is called being unbiased or telling the whole story

Attended Church after.
Guess his handlers let him out of the locked room.

Sorry Celly aka English teacher.. I made a mistake.. Show some of that Winston forgiveness..
April 7th, 2015 at 10:33 am
@ATrain…
The closing statement from the website is:
Lets also not mention the fact that that Winston had more yards over 2 years as well as more sacks and fumbles over his career.
But i guess we can just ignore the stats that don’t support your argument.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:40 am
Per the Buccaneer’s Website:
Passer rating 2014: Mariota 181.7 / Winston 145.5 (mariota was 1st for the 2015 draft class, Winston was 6th.
YARDS/ATT – Mariota 9.8 / Winston 9.4
TD rate: Mariota 8.8 / Winston 7.6
INT rate Mariota 1.0 / Winston 3.3
COMP % Mariota 66.1 / Winston 66.0
Passer rating for the last two seasons Mariota 175.2 / Winston 163.3
MORE FACTS: Oh wait these facts don’t matter ITS WINSTON TIME>>>!!! HE’S the best and you know why because if they say it enough you will believe it..
April 7th, 2015 at 10:44 am
I’m assuming, for every draft, in the entire history of the draft, what front offices do is roll out a big spreadsheet, look at stats, and draft the guy with the best stats.
That’s how it works, right? The guy with the best stats = best NFL prospect
It’s amazing how easy being a GM must be. It’s that simple.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:46 am
That’s why Colt Brennan and Timmy Chang are tearing up the NFL.
Stats!
April 7th, 2015 at 10:46 am
Don’t worry. When the Bucs are again Winning with Winston, I’ll show plenty of that forgiveness and welcome you back with open arms.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:47 am
Exactly Celly just like you ignored a whole article and found one small paragraph to pull out.
The FACT is no one knows who will be better… Its a guess and I think there is as strong an argument for Mariota as for Winston but you will not see that on this FAN page…
You like Winston fine that is your opinion. What is it based on I don’t know.
My opinion is based on the FACTS of the STATS, Combine, Winston’s history ( which has to come into play because it DOES play a big part in who a person is)
April 7th, 2015 at 10:47 am
Folks, as my browser sits here yet again with a “Shockwave Flash has crashed” message due to all the advertisements on this page let me just say, why are you getting in such a fuss over Joe’s opinion? Clearly Winston (much like Manziel last year) are the most controversial players of their respective drafts. Tampa has an opportunity to snag them both. By encouraging the Bucs to draft them Joe also encourages controversy and thus readers and more advertising dollars.
There is nothing wrong with what he’s doing, he’s just wrong in his talent evaluation. As the operator of a free to readers website he’s entitled to do so

Just like I have to accept the fact the bucs are stuck with Lovie the Loser. You sir are going to have to accept Winston is the bucs pick and Mariota is a huge risk in every nfl circle. Not one expert is defending Mariota and let me help you none of the posters on this site are experts including yourself so stop defending mariota and move on it’s as pointless as me expecting Lovie to change and do the right thing.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:56 am
Yes tmaxcon you are correct.
April 7th, 2015 at 10:56 am
My opinion is based on what i’ve seen in how both players PLAY, their collegiate records, the FACT that Winston has an undefeated record when his team is down by 7 points (which most games in the NFL are decided by), the fiery attitude Winston has (which we have not had in the QB position ever), the fact that Winston brings out the best in all those around him (even other QBs, as evidenced by the combine), the fact that Winston wasn’t afraid to put his flaws on display during his pro day….
Also, i didn’t ignore the whole article, i posted the CONCLUSION to the whole article. Which means that even after all those things, what really matters is:
so even though the entire article was about stats, the final words of the author was that STATS AREN’T THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS.
Let me ask you this, do you think that Mariota’s high sack and fumble totals don’t matter? For someone that is so athletic, do you not see that as an issue?
April 7th, 2015 at 10:58 am
You can changed BLIND FOLLOWERS…
By the way Im one that would like to trade down and get an O LINE because it doesn’t matter who the QB is no one can throw from the ground..And I don’t need to be a GM to know that.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:02 am
So i respond to your post sincerely and ask you geniune questions and rather than actually answer them, like an adult, you just get more upset and spew something totally unrelated.
gotcha.
by the way, i’d be happy with either QB, but believe that Winston is the better talent.
Also, Rodgers appears to do quite well behind a shoddy O-line.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:17 am
Stats from a gimmicky college offense are meaningless to NFL scouts and insiders. Period.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:18 am
I do think that Mariota’s fumbles are a problem.. I think there is a question about the offense he ran in college and the transition to Professional football.
Also there has to be a question on his ability to read a defense in the Pro’s
Yes I have questions
However I also have questions about Winston and a lot of them are over looked in many articles. The same thing the Media has done with many QB’s in his position such as Johnny Football.
I am tired of seeing the Bucs lose. I don’t think the QB is going to save us.
And the fans who think this are miss guided and wrong. It will help if the right one gets picked but the Bucs are not filling holes.
If the Bucs continue in this losing way the team will move and L.A. is wanting a team bad . The NFL would love to put one there.
My last post was in reference to Tmaxx..
I value discussing but if you look back several on this site love to scream Winston and then call you stupid. I did buy in to that also.
I want the Bucs to WIN to save the team if not I fear it will be lost. This is based on the attendance last year and going to a home game where the crowd was as full with the other teams fans
April 7th, 2015 at 11:28 am
The Glazers aren’t moving this team anywhere. Not when they still make a large profit even when the team is losing, and have this sweet, free stadium deal.
Nope I don’t see this team going anywhere…attendance was worse in the 80’s and they stayed put.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:33 am
By the way if this QB fails you will look very bad…again….so true and some of have not forgotten the johnny football debacle from last year….
Sir, you change your screen name regularly and enjoy bashing Joe (usually incorrectly). Why not just stick with other websites? Kind of odd how you can’t stay away. –Joe
April 7th, 2015 at 11:39 am
@Joe…hilarious stuff. Every analyst, draft expert, and scout in the land is pretty much saying Winston is and will be the better pick.
Yet somehow fans want to compare this to your Manziel stuff from last off season and we both know this has nothing to do with that.
What mock draft had Manziel at number one overall last season and for how long?
Why would it make you look stupid or be your fault if Winston is a bust? I have no idea. Perhaps you and the other 180 or so NFL people are going to look stupid and you’re just lumped in with them.
It’s almost as if these fans go to no other sites but JBF. That HAS to be it.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:42 am
Joe they can’t go to other websites, because if they did they would see just as much support for Winston on those sites as well….
Silliness I tell ya. Madness.

It all depends on what they want the QB to do. One guy fits well in a traditional NFL offense they other fits well in what may be the future NFL offense. The OC looks like a good bet to be able to structure either attack.
April 7th, 2015 at 11:54 am
! ! ! OK INTERNET HISTORIANS ! ! !
Has Joe surpassed Johnny Football articles of last year with Jaboo articles this year?
OK – I don’t personally like the MM bashing. He’s a talented kid and with the right coaching can be a good NFL QB or bust. I just think Jaboo is the better pick for Tampa.
Same with the Glennon bashing. I rather keep Mike as a backup unless a Third Round trade or better comes along. Injuries happen in the NFL.
As for Josh Freeman bashing………..PILE IT ON! (/Joke) I with him well, but the Phins’s staff better keep him on a very short leash.

If you guys can’t read the writing on the wall, I think you are blind. Jameis Winston will be the first pick, and not because Joe says so, but because he makes the most sense. He is the the most ready, and will have a huge impact on this team. IM NOT calling him Andrew luck, but folks in Indy were writing about his the year before he was eligible…. Just saying, it’s become quite obvious, and I’d rather Joe write about him than Brett Hundley, or Brice Petty…

I think all the fans would love to have either of these QBs. It is obvious that either one would improve the team. I for one, have been a JW support from the go. I remember when JW came on the scene and I thought it would be great for the bucs to get this guy. I thought that the team would be a 9-7 or 10-6 team, so I thought the bucs would have no chance to draft him. Tampa ended up being the worst team and now have the #1 pick. This has to be destiny and reparations, if you will, for the thousands of suffering fans. For the second time this team has a chance to be relevant again.!

It’s call masochism, Joe. Same reason they think OBP would undertake a secretive plot to confuse the public with smokescreens, whey they own they own the number one pick.

You’ve proven in this thread alone that your opinion is garbage. Basing your QB beliefs on stats alone is a joke.
Since you’re pro trade down and draft offensive linemen, please tell us how you evaluate them?
