Is Jameis Winston Too Cocky?

Joe spent all day and night yesterday — and into the wee hours — watching Jameis Winston in person and on television. Joe soaked in everything, from Florida State’s pro day to Winston interviews, and Winston’s feature on Game Changers on NFL Network last night.
Winston, obviously, is one of the least humble athletes entering the professional arena since Muhammad Ali.
It was rare to hear a college prospect rave passionately about his pro day performance.
An NBC Sports reporter approached Winston long after the pro day ended. Winston was told calmly that winning or losing is clear after a game but defining an outcome can be fuzzy after a scripted workout. “Would you call today a win or a loss for you?” the reporter asked Winston.
“You couldn’t tell if I won?” Winston replied on camera. “I know it looked good. I know that looked good. If that was bad, I want to see everybody else pro day. And I want me and you to sit down and watch what everybody else did and watch what I did.”
Winston didn’t knock out Joe Frazier, or even beat the Jaguars in preseason. He completed passes against no defense.
Winston’s cockiness is endearing. It’s fun. It’s electric. And the wild thing is there’s not one reason to think Lovie Smith will rein him. Lovie is no Greg Schiano. He believes players should be themselves as long as they’re being respectful of their team and getting their work done.
Lord only knows what Winston will be saying once he’s an NFL player with a pile of money, and he completes actual passes in rookie minicamp.
Remember Mike Evans’ extraordinary catch in practice last spring. Evans, just 20 years old at the time, reacted like it was another day at the office, just a well mannered Texan trying to fit in and do his job. Joe can only imagine the reaction from Winston if he made such a play.
“Eye-opening process”
Think the Buccaneers locker room will set Winston on a different path? No way. Perhaps the only man who might pull that off is Logan Mankins. Maybe.
Last night on Game Changers, shortly before Winston compared himself to Andrew Luck, he was asked how his private meeting went with Team Glazer. He responded saying it was an “eye-opening process for everybody involved with Tampa Bay” because he was unscripted and “a better version of me.”
Joe is really getting entertained by Winston. Man, if only he could have teamed up with Raheem Morris. Oh, the fun would have flowed. Who could forget when Raheem boldly proclaimed the Bucs were the “best team in the NFC,” when their record didn’t reflect it?
Raheem’s claim, of course, was calculated and tried to inject confidence in what was the NFL’s youngest team in 2010, to help them achieve their famous “Race to 10.”
Joe suspects Winston is not thinking that deeply about his words, just reacting and being his “best self,” as Raheem would say.
The only thing that might shut Winston up is losing. So Joe hopes Winston keeps on talking, keeps on pounding his chest and exalting his teammates.
That beats crying in a news conference, and boring Tampa Bay fans to tears like the last three Bucs quarterbacks did.

Through your writing on this site, I’ve come to appreciate a lot more about Jameis Winston, but comparing him to Ali is a pretty unnecessary stretch.
Moreover, Ali’s cockiness was in service to his role in an individual sport.
That’s not to say it wouldn’t be welcome in a team sport, but Jameis has proven nothing yet at the professional level, and that cockiness can engender dislike and resentment quickly if he doesn’t.

Seeing McCown cry at that news conference in the middle of a 2-14 season was truly a low point for this franchise.

I am not a Winston fan…but this team needs an attitude, much like Sapp gave this team. McCoy is a leader, but does not have an infectious attitude…Winston and Evans give this team some fire…I am all for it!

I have to admit, I love his personality, reminds me of my son, but personality only takes you so far….
Jules: I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Jules: Well we’d have to be talkin’ about one charming motherf**kin’ pig. I mean he’d have to be ten times more charmin’ than that Arnold on Green Acres, you know what I’m sayin’?
Like I’ve said before, he has raw talent, he’s still sloppy in his footwork and his arm angle pretty much sucks for a QB but is great for a pitcher, he’s never going to be able to fix that, it’s engrained, and as long as he can be accurate throwing it that way there’s no reason to try and fix it, like a good golfer with a bad swing, as long as he gets back to the ball square it doesn’t matter what he’s doing the other 99% of the swing. His immaturity scares me, but that’s also part of his personality, he’s still to young to realize he’s being an arrogant assh*le, but you hope that realization will come with time and maturity. My opinion of him is evolving, but still you draft him at your own peril…if he flames out, they can’t blame anyone but themselves as all the signs were there, if he becomes even an above average QB, for Tampa and it’s history with QBs they’ll have hit a home run….

the Bucs NEED NEED NEED an attitude like this. we haven’t had a player with this much fire and attitude since Warren Sapp. This team needs an identity and Winston will be just that .

Why is it a stretch? Name another athlete whose faced the same undeserved scrutiny in the last 35-40 years? Navratilova? Ive made the similar comment around a year ago..when it became autographs and pt shaving ridoculousness i knew it wasnt just coincidence anymore. They had a villain and they used it to make money off of mindless followers who were willing to overlook facts for flashy headlines “jameis’s dna matches accuser” oh, really? What about the other guys’ dna? Ben had an actual botched investigation with multiple other acounts and didnt receive same treatment. The entire jameis investigation narrative was controlled by her aunt lawyer trying to sway public opinion in favor of the poor little liar with zero evidence..jameis showed tremendous character staying above it all, never lashing out on social media and being by all accounts a tremendous teammate, especially clemson week when he refused to let maguire face clemson ill prepared after last minute ridiculous suspension. The kid is special

Jameis’s feet will improve hes always relied on his arm because he could…the benefits of that outweigh the negative..you wont always have a clean pocket and this skill he’s developed is priceless to have when needed

We need someone on this team with attitude which we haven’t had since Warren Sapp left. It will be nice to have someone who gets upset when we lose just like I do and I’m pretty sure that will be Jameis. Last year we would lose a game and the players and coaches acted like they could care less. Hopefully he will bring some fire & energy to the team.

I said, as long as he’s accurate, there was no reason to try and fix it.
I’m not a native, so I’m not beholden to any Fl team, just a Bucs fan.
Luck like Stafford can throw from any angle, so can Brady, Manning, and a whole host of current and former QBs, but their (Luck, Stafford, Manning, Brady) base starting points are much better then Winston’s, again as long as he can be accurate, it’s more a matter of semantics and possible shoulder issues later on….

He has yet to do anything on the next level and until he backs up what he yaps about I would hope he would tame it down some. If not it may do more harm than good for his ego. There are a lot of QBS who thought they would set the NFL on fire like JM just to screw it all up and where are they now. Jmo

I’m an old dude and was around when Muhammad Ali burst onto the scene.
Fameis is NO Muhammed Ali!!!
First of all Muhammed Ali was/is misunderstood. As a youth he was a huge fan of “Gorgeous George” the pro wrestler.
Gorgeous George gained mainstream popularity and became one of the biggest stars of this period, gaining media attention for his outrageous character, which was described as flamboyant and charismatic. Source Wiki
Ali was inspired by George to become a flamboyant charismatic character.
Later of course Ali realized the financial gain from “playing” such a character.
Ali always knew it was a SHOW he put on. He was having fun, making fun of himself and the world around him. My mother and I have played this same game bragging about our pretty looks and smarts. We never do it in public.
The only concern I have with Fameis is he’s not he’s joking. I’m afraid he takes himself that seriously.
And in fact for an old schooler like me that is what upsets me about all the Ali clones since his day. They take themselves too seriously!!! They are not just having fun putting on a show. Some are…some are not.
It’s just always been easier for me to cheer for an Andrew Luck who actually congratulates defensive lineman if they get a great shot in on him. I always respected Jim Brown who believed letting his play speak for itself. It’s the old “show me the money”.
I was raised to believe if you have to boast about yourself then something is lacking. If your actions do not bring the praise then nothing you can say matters anyway.
But I’ll try to keep an open mind. Perhaps deep inside Fameis does get it as a human being. That he has been blessed and has a responsibility that accrues from these blessings.
TALK IS CHEAP. Show me the TD’s. If Fameis does mature into an all pro and lead us deep into the playoffs he’s nothing more than a loudmouth. If he loses and runs his mouth like this he will be truly hard to cheer. Egomaniacs are generally hard to support.
And I’ll keep an open mind. Perhaps Fameis isn’t a genuine assswipe but is actually a nice young man just having fun the only way he knows how. Maybe Fameis is also only putting on a show. If I could be sure of that then I’d have fun along with him.
BTW Please spare me the braggadocio is needed to be a leader or a success in sports. There are just too many examples that prove that is a bunch of crap.
Luck, Brown, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson…there’s a long list of CLASS acts who are also winners.

On February 20, 2015 I had made this comparison of Jameis Winston to Mohamed Ali. In fact, I contrasted the personality styles of Mariota to Winston by comparing them to Joe DiMaggio and Mohamed Ali respectively.Classic introverted/extroverted difference.

First met Cassius Clay at the Fifth St. Gym, we used to spend our spring breaks with Angelo Dundee, saw and spent a lot of time around Ali over the ensuing years, pretty testy when the Nation of Islam took over.
All that being said, the Ali most saw was not how Ali was when he was away from the madness, he was introspective and quiet more often than you think.
As for Winston, don’t know the youngster but have seen others like him.

Jameis is very good – and he knows it. And he’s not afraid to talk about it honestly. But he is not selfish or me-centric at all. He is always about the team. Always about his teammates.

I hung out with Walter Payton at a QB Club banquet for over 2 hours back in the 90’s at Innisbrook in Tarpon Springs. He was a guest speaker. He just pulled me over because I was just leaning up against a wall doing nothing. He said “hey come and talk to me, I was a running back, I don’t have anything in common with these QB guys.” It was an awesome experience. We talked about everything, mostly life experiences. One of the most down to earth human beings I’ve ever met, famous or not. Took several pictures with him and got a few autographs from him. A few years later when I learned that he died I was devastated, like I lost a family member or something. That’s how nice that guy was. I hunted for the autographs and pictures, but lost them somewhere in a move. The point is, the NFL takes all kinds of personalities and Payton’s Bears team certainly had some wild personalities, but they worked together to win a SB.
So I say let Winston be who he wants to be.
“He’s got this infectious personality,” Dilfer said. “A lot of people use the term leadership, but I like guys who are comfortable in their own skin. That’s Jameis. He came in a little unprepared(due to baseball), and he admitted it. But he’s got a real presence to him. I’ve been real proud of him.”

For those who question his maturity and leadership style, yesterday showed exactly why those things are no issue whatsoever once he steps on the field. Beforehand, he was joking with the media by taking pictures of them while they took pictures of him. Once it was time to go, he stepped onto the field and showed his competitive nature, as well as the leadership and respect he has of his teammates. As he said afterward, he is still growing as a person.
His maturity off the field can be questioned, of course, but he was also a college kid in a college atmosphere before now. This kid lives and breathes football, and being in the business-like atmosphere of the NFL will help him continue that growth. The Bucs have supposedly spoken with roughly 75 people from Winston’s life, so assuming that information checks out, he should be a no-brainer as the first pick and future franchise QB.

I watched Winston’s pro day & Game Changers.
Winston’s cocky attitude can cut two ways…..but he must win in order to keep it. Losing with a cocky attitude causes you to blame others for the losing and that won’t work.
It cuts both ways because opposing team fans already have reason to ridicule Winston and if Winston is cocky it will exacerbate the hate from them.
I feel that way about Cam Newton….of course, since Winston is our cocky ba$tard then we will like him….as long as he wins.
I actually found Winston’s manner & personality likable, amusing and alluring.

you have to admit atleast after a loss the press conferences will be more entertaining….it’ll give this local media more to write about because I like the attitude but he’s still talking like a kid that only lost 1 game in his college career. when he realizes the difference and is adjusting to the speed of the game I cant wait to see how he talks then. after listening a raheem morris, greg schiano, lovie smith, glennon and josh mccown’s press conferences this will be a welcomed change and im all for it because we wont have a quarterback that cries after a loss in the mist of a 2-14 season because he knows he’s done already or a quarterback like cam newton who whines and pouts after a loss, lol Winston seems like he’ll celebrate

A single Tom Brady quote in his first year made after he had some experience at the NFL doesn’t come close to putting him in the same category as Jameis. That quote came after he had played against NFL competition. He has never had to take every opportunity to tell everyone that he is great and a good person.

Winston’s personality will be a net plus…..there will be statements/moments but overall, I think the Bucs need a spark.

Brady was drafted as a catcher in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos but passed it up for football. he was a back up for 2 years behind brian griese and came out as a 5th round pick and him saying that it’s the same game he played when he was a kid is a reassuring statement for any young aspiring quarterback if your smart and cool and calm. he came into this league as a back up and got his shot because of an injury. his story prior to becoming the tom brady we know today is how the majority of nfl careers go. it kinda just goes to show tampa fans know nothing about hall of fame quarterbacks

Winston can be as confident and out spoken as he wants as long as he gets the job done on the field. Charismatic people with tons of confidence and personality are usually successful. Example: If you are at a party and there are 2 hot women and one of them is quiet and is just sitting alone, and is not much into mingling, dancing or conversation and the other is the life of the party, who is a guy going to gravitate to? That is kind of like the difference between Mariota and Winston. The Bucs are taking Winston unless something really bad happens between now and the draft. All you Winston haters better just accept this if you want to remain Bucs fans. Winston is going to be our new QB. Time to accept the inevitable. Welcome to Tampa Jameis!!!

Why are so many concerned with our future qb being able to put on a show off the field? Truelly take a look at the greats in all team sports and you will find that those who spent their time off the playing surface self promoting are the Minority. The greats let their play speak for itself.

Tampa is NOT ready for Winner. He is full-tilt 24/7. Total narcissist so when he high he’s really high and when he’s low he really low. He’s going to rub people the wrong way, even if he wins. If he comes back in 20 years MAYBE tampa will be ready but not right now.

Who else tested up when he said “my grandmother is my everything”. The kid won’t leave his grandmother on draft day. The day they worked so hard to get to. WS99 loved his grandmother like that too and made a total ass of himself when she went to heaven, crying like a little girl.
Out of everything I saw yesterday that was my favorite moment.

Sort of off topic but I remember the 00’s had great receivers like Randy Moss, TO, OchoCinco, maybe even Keyshawn if you want to stretch the word great.
They were all loud, brash, cocky. But they were great players. The media would constantly ask, “why can’t these receivers be more like Marvin Harrison? There’s a guy who just keeps his mouth shut and plays football”.
After he retires, info of Marvin Harrison comes out that suggests he had a hand in a shooting in Philidelphia and potentially other murders. At the very best he had ties to drug dealers.
So “brash and cocky” is not something that really turns me away from a player. NBA players are some of the cockiest people in the world, largely because if you lack confidence in your abilities, you’ll be in your own head and suffer as a result. As long as Jameis recognizes he still needs to work his arse off, his cockiness might not be a bad thing at all.

Jameis Winston is a joke. With his shirt off yesterday, he doesn’t even look like an athlete; let alone a potential #1 draft pick…. He looks like a lazy bum who NEVER works out at all. Speaking of what this team needs….I go with talent. I can see the Winstonites have been correct about his talent. I’m truly on board.
IF he’s just funnin’ everybody with his cockiness I can probably get past that too.
But again spare me the NEED for such ANTICS. If MM were as talented on the field he leads just as well without his mouth.
Somebody tried to give credit to Warren Sapp for juicing up our defense. GMC would have been just as good in that defense. DB55 was the REAL leader of the defense. He lead by example with class and dignity. Everybody followed him including the LONE loudmouth on the team Sapp. Without DB55 Sapp would have probably self destructed much as he has done since he left the team. Barber, Alstott, Dunn, Lynch were all class acts!
87 wants us to let Fameis be who he wants to be. Fine 87 let us cheer for the kind of athletes we want to cheer for. It’s a two way street eh? And for those who love their jocks loud and proud I’m happy for you! Fameis is your dream come true.
I’ll cheer for him as part of the team but when he tosses a TD to VJAX I’ll be cheering much louder for VJAX. Fameis doesn’t need me to cheer…he’s a one man band of cheerleaders for himself.
Bottom line…Go Bucs. Get Fameis…I agree he has the talent…and lets win the division this year.

If Jameis wins then he can be as cocky as he wants. If he takes us into January this season, Tampa Vay will be his. From Indian rocks beach to Ybor, it will be his.
However if he loses, the arrogance will make for a very messy situation. You thought the Josh Freeman divorce was bad…

Remember Mike Evans’ extraordinary catch in practice last spring. Evans, just 20 years old at the time, reacted like it was another day at the office, just a well mannered Texan trying to fit in and do his job.

Used to love to hate on Ali. Me and most Americans always wanted him to get his ass kicked but he never did. Always backed it up. Then when he came back from his (unfair) suspension, we started to realize that he WAS The Greatest.
Jamies is no Ali but he will learn and grow and back up his words. And we may not come to love him but we will learn to respect him. Go Bucs!!
