Many folks at home watching on TV thought Jameis Winston’s pro day at Florida State University stunk out loud yesterday.
Those who watched in person, including Bucs general manager Jason Licht, were giddy from what they witnessed.
If you want to know if a quarterback did well, why not tap into the experience of a quarterback with playoff experience? That’s why Joe listens to the favorite son of St. Petersburg, Shaun King.
The beloved quarterback, one of three to ever lead the Bucs to the NFC Championship game, watched all of Winston’s pro day and filed this Yahoo! Sports video with his take on Tuesday’s event.
King was very troubled by what he saw.

shaun king is gimmick analyst…..dude put on display what he needs work on for his future team and people are complaining about it. want the guy to showcase what teams already know he does well, I put that in the category of just trying to make a buck. while it would have been smart I think it showed heart and courage to put your weaknesses on display throwing 102 passes and he does need work on his footwork but atleast teams already know this. he’s still better than glennon and like king stated mariota had a pretty average forgettable pro day and maybe Winston feels like he has nothing to lose. matters it matters to every player going into draft to get picked first but it’s not everything as you can see how happy they are once they get picked.

Not what I remember King looking like…whew!
Anyway, I like that Winston was emphasizing his mobility. It is not a strength of his and he is not afraid to show everyone the good and the not-so-good. I commend Winston for that and didn’t think it lessened anyone’s opinion of his ability to play the position. Draft Winston, win football games…”kinda simple as that”

I would like to add that Shaun King went out on Twitter and said that “a little birdie told him” (his words, direct quote) that Jameis was staying in college for one more year.
He had INSIDE INFORMATION. He had a source in Winston’s family.
The guy is a Shrek-looking hack.

The blame isn’t and shouldn’t be directed at Jameis – his qb coach and stager of the pro day should field the criticism.
I’m growing more and more impressed by this kid – he’s Teflon and nothing rattles him.

Jameis Winston is a joke. With his shirt off yesterday, he doesn’t even look like an athlete; let alone a potential #1 draft pick…. He looks like a lazy bum who NEVER works out at all. He should be ashamed of his lack of work ethic instead of cocky. This dude is a bust waiting to happen. Mariota is the superior prospect.

If Jameis hadn’t done the scrambling:
“Jameis Winston had a great pro day, but these things are all scripted just to highlight their best features. If Jameis weren’t a coward, he would have done more scrambling to try and highlight what he can do on the run. Overall I give his Pro Day a C+.”
I’m looking forward to him being the face of our franchise for 10+ years, but damn the media is going to be a nuisance the whole way through.

Weight-room ripped and in-shape are two completely different things. I know plenty of shredded meat-heads who couldn’t run 2miles. The dude threw a 102 passes in an hour yesterday and never got winded. Lord help us if there were pictures of a shirtless Roethlisberger or Manning right now.

If I hear one more comparison to Jamarcus Russell a guy al Davis drsfted Cuz h he threw well on his knees. Never came close to a heisman and perfect season same year. Just stop. You Winston hater make me laugh so much. Always hating. Always having your negative feedback like a 2year old. Winston was the most winning QB in NCAA and won the National Championship and Heisman in 2 years of college. You complain about his INTs, but the guy forced things because his team wasn’t as good as the year before. His overall TD/INT ratio is the bigger picture. Pure leader. He may not look athletic, but all he does is win, and win close games. I would welcome that to a team I can barely stand anymore. I would welcome MM too. I don’t care, I just want to win, but would prefer the best QB coming out in this draft…Jameis Winston.

It should be noted that King has Winston as his #1 QB though. His issues seemed to be more with Winston’s QB coach, Whitfield.

I’ve read a number of evaluations of Winston’s Pro Day on various websites. L&L seem to be the only two people impressed by it. Just like they were impressed by Michael Johnson and Anthony Collins.

Jameis may not look like Tarzan, but he’s one hell of a college quarterback. Tim Tebow looks like Tarzan and was also one hell of a college quarterback. Tebow’s skillset obviously didn’t translate to the pro game, which didn’t surprise any objective fans. It remains to be seen how well Winston’s skillset translates to the pro game, but he certainly shows a lot of promise — if he can stay out of trouble.
Another parallel between Tebow and Winston is the blind adoration from their college team’s fan bases. Gator Nation still doesn’t understand why Tebow isn’t a starting QB in the NFL, even though there is tons of condemning video evidence. FSU fans similarly believe Winston hasn’t done anything wrong and won’t continue the pattern of making bad decisions. The bottom line is that FSU fans that blindly support Winston are just as annoying (and incorrect) as the Gator fans that blindly support Tebow.

saying any rookie has mechanics to clean up is stating the obvious at every single position there is in the nfl, every new job, every walk of life there has to be growing pains which creates growth and development. technically mike glennon is still going throw a serious growth spurt and theres no shame on his part that mariota and Winston would come in and be automatically be better than him on day one. isn’t there going to be a rookie mini camp?

I’m the biggest winston fan but his pro day was just average. Throws were off the mark. When scouts and analysts talk about accuracy during workouts they’re looking for qbs to hit receivers in stride because its no defense so its implied that they expect you to complete every pass. But coming from someone that doesn’t take any stock in pro days who the fug cares what happened yesterday?

Pro days aren’t what they used to be. I think you can definitely improve your stock, but I don’t believe you should be hurt that bad by it.

I did see some of the bad footwork (3 seconds in one Joe video post is good example of throwing off back foot and off balance) but this was a Pro day (not really a decision maker type day)….that is what OTAs are for and the QB coach will address it.
Hence I have been saying—neither QB is NFL ready…they both have much work to do. I do think JW–with some Pro coaching –will be better than Cam in 1-2 years.

I always appreciate this guy’s opinion. It’s refreshing to get a shot truth and borderline pessimism as opposed to the other corporate-pumped analytics.
People give King heat because he’s so negative, but look around, there’s not a whole lot to be positive about this team over the past 10 yrs… so he’s been more right than wrong.

1. his leadership in the pocket before and after a play
2. his ability to put touch on the short throws – who remembers Freeman hitting the feet of receivers and RBs in the flat !!!!???

JW and MM aren’t pro ready by any means of the word but it’s ok because neither is glennon. if your glennon lol your working hard to impress some other team because even if your going to prepare like a starter….something he said last year sitting behind josh mccown he knows what a 1st overall pick is all about and will be the guy before he’s ready. glennon prepared like a starter and failed miserably…..this offensive line needs a quarterback with Winston’s personality

Did you guys see NFL Live do a draft board with who would be drafted from FSU? Had 9 guys in the 1st four rounds and 12 total as a possibilty. 3 offensive lineman in 1st 3 rounds and a 4th round WR! Whether Winston is the pick or not, this squashes that ignorant argument that Winston had less talent this season and why he struggled. 3 offensive lineman in 1st 3 rounds! Wow! Never wanna hear that dumb argument again about his struggles..

I remember when Shaun King played for the Bucs and he was never that good. I don’t know if his word on what a good QB is has any merit. If this was say Dan Marino speaking I would be more apt to want to listen.

Why the EFF would any shredded meathead that is weight-room ripped run two miles? That’s just stupid and almost completely unrelated. Cardiovascular endurance and anaerobic fitness are two completely different things. Winston’s a fat boy, he probably doesn’t know how to eat to burn fat and maintain and build muscle mass, and he probably doesn’t really know how to work in the gym to build mass and lose fat. Most people assume that to lose fat, you have to do cardio… which is the exact opposite from the truth. Cardio is great for reducing bodyweight but the weight lost is usually just as much muscle as it is fat and on top of that cardio endurance athletes are actually training their body to store fat. It’s a big science. A science that Winston clearly has no knowledge of… but as far as throwing a football…and winning games… and being a QB… he’s a genius.

I’m not going to criticize Shaun King. He may not have been a good NFL QB, but I’m pretty sure he’s a helluva lot better than every single one of us could ever dream to be. I always think it’s funny to see people criticize a guy’s opinion because he wasn’t a Hall of Famer, when they themselves couldn’t start for their JV team. Sorry to tell you guys, King probably knows more football than all of us combined.
That being said, it’s a freaking pro day. I watched the whole thing. He looked good to me, but what the hell do I know? We can all make a long list of QB’s who had great pro days and flopped, and vice versa. If we pick Winston or don’t pick Winston based on a stupid pro day, then we are probably going to screw up the pick. This is another great example of how these things get blown way out of proportion, and teams can outthink themselves.
The thing that I enjoyed watching was the way he carried himself. The guy has charisma that is completely off the charts. Taking away the off the field transgressions and just watching him, I have no idea how anyone could not like the guy. I understand that’s an unreasonable request to forget everything he’s done, but from what I can see with my eyes, I love the way he carries himself. You can see his teammates love him, and he loves them right back. Anyone not like how he introduced all of his teammates to the coaches and GM’s? Anyone not like how he went and got them water during a break? Apparently some of you have a problem with him wanting to be great and saying it. Well, you go ahead and cheer for the QB that says he wants to be average. I’ll go with the guy who wants to be the greatest.

shaun king knows nothing about being an elite prospect or what it takes to become a championship caliber qb. maybe we can get more opinion from hall of fame qb’s and coaches and less from 1 shot qb’s who crapped out when it counted.

So by your philosophy, you think only hall of fame QB’s have an opinion that matters? The stupid is really running strong as the draft gets closer. I’m as big of a proponent of Jameis as anyone, but just because someone doesn’t agree with you doesn’t mean they don’t have any credentials, or there is no merit to what they say. You go ahead and give me the list of great talent evaluators that were great players. They are not one in the same. How great of a talent someone was in their playing day has little to no relevance to how well they can recognize talent. That goes for every sport, FYI. The arrogance of some people on a blog site blows me away sometimes.
