A New/Old Bucs Coach Is Coming To Tampa

March 25th, 2015

HermLovieLovie Smith turned to free agent defensive players who know his old-school, Tampa-2 system this offseason.

And he also might look to an old-school Tampa-2 coach.

Joe chatted today with former Bucs secondary coach (and former Jets and Chiefs head coach) Herm Edwards, who revealed that he spent time with Lovie on Monday and will be coming to Tampa for a full week at the start of training camp.

And no, Edwards isn’t coming for some sort of fancy BSPN feature, Edwards will roam the sidelines, “observe closely” and be in the building, he said.

Joe asked Edwards whether he’ll be helping coach up defensive backs. Edwards said he “might put on a coaching hat. You know, I get excited.”

Joe will have more from Edwards in the coming days, specifically some excellent Xs and Os discussion.

Herm is awesome…don’t understand why he’s out of coaching…

  4. sturgis1115 Says:

WoW!!!!! That would be awesome. Some serious coaching, now get the few needed players

  5. bucrightoff Says:

He’s out of coaching by choice I’d imagine. I mean Gregg Williams in back in the NFL for Christ sakes. Herm could no doubt get a DC job anywhere, but TV is a nice gig, less pressure and travel and probably comparable cash. If that’s what makes him happy, good for him.

  6. Matt Says:

Herm! Welcome back to Tampa! We need all the help we can get.

Herm is very entertaining on tv and is a natural. He could get a d coordinator job but the security of espn is too much to even risk making the jump back into coaching.

  7. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

OMG, this is the best Tampa news I have read today!

  8. Tom Edrington Says:

Obviously Lovie must not hold his current secondary staff in high esteem if he needs Herm in the building…..

  9. Buccfan37 Says:

Herm probably will come in, tell a few jokes and cheer up Lovie.

  10. Buc4life1979 Says:

    YES PLZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Dennis Says:

Can he coach the offensive line though???

  12. bucs4lyfe Says:

they’ll definitely be loose with him around im sure you cant help but laugh. it’ll be some nice exposure for him to come in take a look around then get the word out…..just please herm no more superbowl predictions

Herm is coming to do a rookie symposium for the Bucs draft pics

  15. andres Says:

    Ok that would be awesome!

  16. BigMacAttack Says:

I have always liked Herm and his dynamic personality. I think he would be a better HC than Lovie. More Heart, Fire & Passion. js

Herm is awesome…don’t understand why he’s out of coaching…

I like(d) Herm too, and thought he’d at least be some sort of assistant somewhere…

…but i’m guessing his 54-74 record as a head coach (.422) has something to do with it.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

Hopefully he can find some upgraded players for Lovie and bring them with him. Nice guy. Good coach but I’m not a fan of living in the past. just a distraction from the main problem which is Lovie Smith horrendous personnel decisions or coaching

  20. SteveK Says:

    Celly,

Who were Herm’s QBs at NYJ and KC?

Maybe he did some good things with Pennington.

  21. Tom Edrington Says:

    @Celly:

Herm makes better money at ESPN, more stability and no brutal hours, that’s why he’s not an assistant somewhere….

  22. Buc1987 Says:

BigMacAttack …seeing how we don’t see you around these parts all that often anymore.

    Mariota or Winston?

  23. Buctebow Says:

I wouold highly doubt that Herm taking a job with the Bucs, likely just a visit, maybe partly personal and partly work related. Hopefully he will provide a little help and motivation.

  24. Celly Says:

    @SteveK,

    The list is ugly….

You’re correct on Pennington (although i’m not sure he was the only one with NYJ….

for the Chiefs……does the name Brodie Croyle ring a bell? lol.

    @Tom

I’m not arguing against that, but with that being said, you rarely hear of his name being spoken of when people want to revive all these old school coaches (Gruden, Cowher, etc).

Anyway, none of this really matters. Herm is most likely just coming to see the team with a fresh set of eyes for his friend, Lovie, and to hopefully give some of these DBs some more insight into what is needed to be done when playing Cover 2.

I don’t see how this could be a bad thing.

  25. Stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m starting to become a Lovie fan. Most coaches are too insecure to surround themselves with people who may be smarter.

Lovie now has 2 former HC/DC’s working with him.

My wife and i have saying….we enjoy hanging with people comfortable in their own skin, a minority of folks. Most people are simply too insecure and so they respond like some on here….with ad hom and namecalling.

Lovie impresses me as somebody comfortable in his own skin. I think he’s far more concerned with actually winning than our perception of him.

  26. j lynch Says:

Bucco bruce you want to know why he is out of coaching ? Look at his tenure with the Jets and Cheifs that should be enough.. Oh yeah he gave Raheem Morris his first coaching job baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  27. Hawk Says:

After his visit, will he predict the Bucs will be in the Super Bowl?

  28. ChanEpic Says:

    HELLO!

I just had to do it. Welcomed with WIDE open arms. I’m starting to get some good feelings(finally) Go Bucs!

  29. MadMax Says:

    Im all for it….Hire Him!

  30. OneBuC55 Says:

I always liked Herm Edwards, he keeps it 100% real all the time…I think there’s a little more to this story than we know right now…

Your trade down points are actually coherent, but I will not be swayed. I would rather have a Queen than a Bishop, a couple of Knights and a Rook.
    …………………………………………
Im already out of the Trade Down crowd but I sure would love to play chess against you if you believe a Queen is equal to a Bishop, Two Knights, and a Rook

    I’ll say it….

Jameis Winston won’t screw up again off the field….

That’s right I said. Mark it down.

    Dude, no you didn’t !
Just when I am trying to represent the cool side of you.

  34. Sapo Says:

    Can he play guard?

  35. Stanglassman Says:

Herm was Dungy’s Disciplinarian. Once he left the staff Tony started to have some problems in that area. I think if he and a few other assistants stayed another year or two that dominate Def would have at least one more superbowl.

  36. bucman1978 Says:

HELL YA BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Herm will be back in town

  37. Mike10 Says:

    Sturgis, “few”?

  38. Dreambig Says:

You cant go back to the past. While were at it, maybe we can bring back Dungy, Monte, Derrik, Sap, Lynch, and Ronde. There is a reason Herm is out of coaching. He’s not that good at it. He is only a name you all recognize, just like last year when everone was creaming over Lovie. So far how is that working out? When is the last time you heard Herm say something intelligent on TV? Doesn’t happen much. Having said all of that, I am happy to be wrong. If he can help Lovie pull our Pirate Ship out of Davy Jones locker, I am all for it.
